show have been cancelled. let's bring our meteorologist rob mayeda and we're talking about this weather all summer. 18 month of dry weather across southern california where we're seeing the fires breaking out and the hottest and driest and windiest spots across northern california. let's zoom you in toward solano county and it's 86 degrees and there you see the temperatures closer to sacramento. the wind speeds have been gusty throughout the afternoon and up to close to 25 miles per hour and quickly fanning those flames off to the north and east and look at these humidity levels down into the lower 20% range. this is the story that will play out as the conditions we're seeing outside right now. more typical from what you would see at end of september. it's just that dry out there and around the bay area, too. specifically it's the tri-valley out toward livermore today that saw the temperatures start to climb up a few degrees and we'll have to watch for dry conditions and an elevated risk for fire danger and the winds across the bay area are pretty gusty and

out toward the tri-valley in the teens and our temperatures this weekend, livermore, pleasanton and areas south of san jose will be pushing the upper 90s and we'll talk more of the warm-up on the way and coming up in the full forecast in a few minutes. back to you. >> some good news in napa county. evacuation orders have been lifted and people forced out of their homes because of this week's big fire are back home tonight. all roads were re-opened at noon today. the fire is about 55% contained at this time. it it has burned about 4300 acres since it started on tuesday. nine homes and buildings were completely de destroyed and many burned to the ground. the cause is will still unknown. >> we're also following another developing story. the immigration crisis continues in southern california in the small town of murrieta. dozens of protesters spent this fourth of july awaiting the arrival of more busses carrying undocumented immigrants from central america. many of them children. nbc bay area's damian trujillo is in murrieta this evening

where people on both sides of the issue have been squaring off and this is a national story. >> reporter: yeah. it's been loud at times and at times confrontational. those busses have not arrived at this point. the protesters both pro and anti-immigration on the other side of the police tape waiting for the arrival and on the other side of the tape where i am standing is the police here in murrieta and also the border patrol. now in the middle of all of this con t controversy are the children who perhaps have no idea on why they're here. >> usa! >> this is how both groups spent their fourth of july. some against the undocumented immigrant children and some for. >> i think it's ridiculous that we have to take on the world's issues. not every problem and every crisis in the world falls out of our wallets. >> that's why we're here gathering with the people because they're human. every human has their rights and

even though they're children. >> busses are coming this way. >> police arrested one man trying toen cite one group calling himself the patriot. >> some came with parent, many came alone, after rumors spread throughout their countries that the united states was granting children permits to stay in this country and an overwhelmed border patrol in texas began shipping thousands of those children across the country. when three busses arrived at the murrieta detention center, angry protesters blocked the entrance, forcing the busses to turn around. >> tonight, as they waited for another wave of busses it was an independence day full of heated disagreements on what should happen to those children. >> and we've just been told that three more arrests have been made, one for an assault on a police officer. so tensions are high here in

rather, have really been an issue. they rival any professional show, but these are fireworks coming from a home in oakland just down the home last fourth of july. >> noon my own neighborhood, in my own house on fourth of july, i hate it. >> over the years the holiday has turned into a nightmare. >> it just causes all of this anxiety. it's scary. there have been years where it's been so close and sparks landing in our yard, i thought our trees were going catch on fire, our house was going to burn down. >> so she's watering her down and house and then getting out of town. >> i don't even want to be here tonight so we're staying in a hotel. >> oakland city council member libby shaft says over time illegal fireworks have been seen as okay here, but they're not especially in a year as dry as this. >> neighbors are absolutely justified in being furious at the level of lawlessness, at the wild, wild west nature of

illegal fireworks in oakland. >> she says fire officials and police officers will be out in force and for the first time a fireworks hotline will be answered by people taking reports. >> there's no trouble with it, you know what i mean? you have to be safe with it . >> while some are okay with it, neighbors like heather wish it would end. >> it's everywhere. >> reporter: opd is urging anyone who hears fireworks or sees them to call police immediately and try to write down an address for the home where they are seeing them and they will not take risks today and will be dispatching police as soon as they get the call. we are live in oakland, i'm derek shore, nbc bay area news. >> fireworks are back, legal fireworks. after a long absence the rotary club is hosting a big show in downtown san jose. ian coles is at the children's discovery museum and for several years this is a south bay favorite and it's back in business. >> and they are going to get a show tonight, raj.

>> this is pretty cool, the pyro spectaculars have set up this 20-minute show and they will light up the south bay skies after a six-year blackout and it canceled through 2008 with budget cuts and they've spent the past two years raising $200,000 putting this together and the president says it's a gift to the city and something they wanted to do because the route is prohibiting many in the bay area from igniting fireworks themselves. >> we are just so happy it's here. i take my kids here every year since they were infants and we'd come right to discovery meadow to see the fireworks and it's wonderful for the city and it's wonderful that we can celebrate rotary's hundred years with the fireworks. >> they're expecting anywhere from 5,000 to 50,000 people tonight so you should come early if you plan on coming. the event is completely free. the fireworks show gets under way at 9:30 and you talk to theed head pyrotechnician.

expected to cause a lot of backups at the 101. this is 101 at the hospital curve and traffic looks like it's moving fairly well in both directions. nbc bay area'smonty francis has made his way there and that's probably one of the best ways to get there, monty. >> people are taking cal trans in train to avoid that traffic. it's scheduled to start at 9:30 tonight and 200,000 people are expected to be here in the city to see it it. . >> with the northbound lanes of interstate 280 closed from the 101 interchange to king street until monday morning due to construction, traffic should be heavy. uniis accommodating spectators. people are making their way into the city early by caltrans.

>> there are so many cars on the road right now it's kind of unsafe. >> we like to have fun and have a couple of drinks and we don't want to drive. it's not worth getting a dui. >> crews spent the day loading pyrotechnics for the fourth of july fireworks display. the producer of the fireworks show says it will be moved into place by pier 39 a couple of hours before the show begins. >> jeff thomas of pyro spectacular says, it's been clear for two years on the fourth, but if the fog rolls in tonight all is not lost. >> we prepared the show to go with multiple layers in the sky. so if there is some fog in the area we can still see the show. >> some spectators have secured their viewing spots at aquatic park and most are keeping a positive attitude about the fog. >> it's a hit and miss. we're hoping for good weather, but since we're so close we'll be able to see something. >> it's the crowd that brings the show. even if you can't see the fireworks there are still good

crowd members and sing along with patriotic songs i heard that will be played tonight. so, it's the atmosphere. >> reporter: and cal train is also adding extra service tonight both inbound and outbound and trained the last caltrain leaves the city at midnight tonight. live in san francisco, motorcycles monte franceis. >> there is an alternative for driver who let the celebration get the best of them. tipsy tow service. they will take their drivers and vehicles home for three miles. it's being offered until tomorrow at 6:00 a.m. for anyone who dials 1-800-aaa-help and asks for tipsy tow. >> new at 5:00, a two-story home in daly city goes up in flames. firefighters were called to this home on camelot court just after 1:00 this afternoon and they evacuated the residents and neighbors and no other homes

were damaged and that's the good news and no one was hurt. the cause is under investigation. >> and this just in tonight in the south bay, nbc bay area has learned a second suspect is in custody tonight in a violent home invasion. investigators say one of the victim, an 85-year-old woman was robbed and sexually assaulted in her east san jose home. the woman's husband was also injured. investigators say after the two suspects stole the couple's suv they then crashed it into another home. the 15-year-old passenger was arrested at the scene. police say they've arrested the driver of the getaway car. and the government bonuses that will have you shaking your head. see what a congressional investigation has uncovered. plus this -- >> a salmonella outbreak in a california plant has caused a massive chicken recall. i'll have the details about that coming up. and the unexpected move from san jose's joey chestnut at the hot dog eating contest today. we're back in a moment.

>> take a look at this. a wild crash during a high-speed chase in los angeles cut a tesla in two and left four people hospitalized. police were chasing the car they say was stolen from the dealership. the tesla struck a honda that was carrying four people before hitting a pole. the tesla wound up in a synagogue. the tesla driver is in critical condition as is one of the passengers from the the honda. some anxious southern californians are relieved over a hospital quarantine. here's why. it's delaying the release of the pillowcase rapist in their community. people who live in lake los angeles near palmdale are angry the state is releasing christopher hubbard in their community. he's admitted to attacking more than 40 women in the 1970s and '80s including some here in the bay area. monday's release date is now delayed for two weeks because of

the norovirus at the minuhospit where he's incarcerated. >> this is a nationwide recall of foster farms chicken. the chicken sickened hundreds of people. >> live in santa clara about what you need to know and this is just one of many recalls from foster farms. >> reporter: it absolutely is and right now the specific chicken that we're talking about is no longer on story shelves, but it was carried at big chains like safeway and most cases, the label said foster farms, but some stores did carry it as a store name-brand, but it is very important to check out what's in your freezer right now. >> some chicken. >> reporter: foster farms is recalling chicken that may end up on your grill. the central valley company has been linked to a salmonella outbreak that has sickened nearly 600 people in the last year. >> it's concerning that they're not taking care of their, you know, poultry factories the way they should be and public health

and stuff is a major concern for everybody. >> steve ganly says he might think twice about buying foster farms chicken again. >> it doesn't seem like they're doing enough to make sure that it's not getting out to the public. so somebody's negligent. >> foster farms officials say the infected products have use or freeze by dates between march 21st and march 29th and the following establishment numbers. the products were sold across the country at several chains including safeway and costco. >> you have to assume all meat will be contaminated and they need to cook it properly and it should be fine. >> reporter: the food and safety inspection service says chicken should be cooked at 165 degrees or hotter to kill bacteria. foster farms released a statement saying the health and safety of their customers is their number one priority and in case you missed any of the details on that recall, we do have it listed on our website and nbc bay area.com. reporting live in santa clara, i'm michelle roberts. >> michelle, thank you. >> a lot of people upset about

questionable bonuses, bonuses for some executives at those va hospitals that are under investigation for delays in patient care. nearly $400,000 in bonuses were awarded last year to directors and top leaders at 38 veterans hospitals across the country. "usa today" reports the veterans affairs department suspended the practice after the scandal broke out. the director of palo alto's facility received a $12,000 bonus in february after reporting wait times of fewer than 18 days for new patients. the va's probe found the average wait time was actually 63 days. right now a lot of people are getting ready to head outdoors and head out to the pier and take a look at the fireworks show at the embarcade embarcadero. >> sunshine across the bay area and fog trying to creep into the west side of san francisco. it's 87 degrees in pleasanton and livermore. no problems for viewing in the tri-valley and oakland, 64 degrees and you have clear skies over the oakland coliseum and as

you take a closer look at san francisco, west of downtown now, you don't want to see that. that is a blanket of fog trying to creep on in and the clouds trying to creep in as they move over downtown. mat patches of low clouds and for san francisco. you can see where the sea breeze will cool things off and even into napa has brought the temperatures down to 71 degrees and at livermore at 87 and across the inner bay, things are running cooler than 24 hours ago and notice to san martin and that trend is going to accelerate and take you to the weekend and high pressure builds in and tomorrow not too bad and the moderate rains throughout the bay area for your outdoor plans are looking pretty good for your saturday. a little breezy out there right now and we'll watch those fireworks, a light sweatshirt or jacket for sure in san francisco, but it should stay in the 60s and 70s in the east bay valleys with fairly mild

temperatures and one thing to watch, we'll head to the high country and watch out for the monsoon rain in california and that can head to lake powell by the time we get toward sunday and right now it's headed to the bay area and low clouds around the golden gate bridge and we'll see the low clouds from 7:00 to 9:30 mainly on the west side of the golden gate and patches of low clouds around fireworks time and as it gets to tomorrow morning areas of drizzle and fog. nothing, but sunshine as we get toward the afternoon and the weekend is looking down and the high pressure is going to boost temperatures in the valleys and mid to upper 90s by sunday and that is a warm-up and the other component to watch around the ridge of high pressure will be moisture coming up out of southern california. for now we think those thunder showers will get off to the east of the bay area and as you see in the seven-day forecast, temperatures will begin to cool down. tomorrow highs in the mid-80s and close to 86 degrees and 90 for saratoga, san francisco, 67 and the trend is a little bit warmer and even for san francisco, toward monday you'll

see those highs approaching 70 and as we wrap up the weekend and the first half of next week looks a bit on the warm side. for the north bay you'll see 85 degrees and pleasanton, 93 and temperatures in the north bay and livermore is warming up and as early as sunday afternoon and monday the temperatures start to cool down toward the middle part of the week next week and for fireworks time tonight, no problem, we suspect around the bay area especially around san jose and the clear sky, 66 degrees and san francisco will be the place to watch. as you see right now we do have the low clouds starting to creep on in. bundle up. we'll hope the low clouds stay golden gate centric and it should be a great sight over san francisco and gorgeous viewing around san jose later on this eening. back to you. >> it looks great. thank you, rob. do they have a legitimate complaint? why california winemakers are unhappy with internet guidelines. and apple's latest move that

another bay area city is declaring its independence from styrofoam food containers. beginning today restaurants in los altos will have to find something else to package their food and also the stores will be banned from selling products made out of styrofoam including ice chest and los altos will no longer be able to send people home and with styrofoam containers. mountain view enacted its own ban on tuesday. >> california winemakers say their reputations are at stake and they're banding nationwide over two proposed internet

domains. .wine or .vin. the concern is that once the domains become available, outsiders with no ties to the area could buy their domain name and confuse consumers. as the napa group suggests illegitimate companies can hijack the history of fine winemaking. the internet corporation for assigning names and numbers has put that issue on hold for now. >> apple has hired a switch watch executive to help with the launch of the new i-watch, the luxurymaker, tag heuer left his post recently as last week to take a contract with apple and the cupertino tech giant is rumored to be releasing the i-watch later this year. apple has tried to approach several employees from high-end watchmakers without much success. this time they've succeeded and apple has yet to comment on the move. the big surprise at the annual hot dog eating contest. >> we'll be back in a moment.

>> demands for a federal investigation tonight, a response to cell phone video of a chp officer beating a woman on the side of the freeway. a los angeles driver posted this video online wednesday which shows an officer grabbing and then punching, as you can see, this woman who walked on an onramp up the santa monica freeway. she was barefoot and carrying several bags and it's speculated she could be homeless. southern california human rights activists today demanded an immediate federal investigation and we just heard chp regarding

the assault and hear what they're saying about this video coming up at 6:00. on a much lighter note, another holiday and another victory for san jose's hot dog eating champion joey chestnut and this time he got a bonus prize and it it has nothing to do with hot dogs. >> this has been the best three years of my life and i can't live without you. you make me better. will you marry me? >> yes! >> she said yes, right? >> she said yes. >> he popped the question to his longtime girlfriend right there at the hot dog eating championship and there were actually some weather issues here because of hurricane arthur wet and wild at coney island and bottom line, joey chestnut of san jose wins it, 61 hot dogs, i believe. the runner-up is also from san jose. he comes back with a full stomach and bride to be. >> rob, this is prime grilling weather right now.
