calls for peace and justice for tray van martin. good evening. the streets of oakland are calm tonight on this national day of action. a day when people across this country rallied for a cause. nbc bay area's mike fransz is in oakland where people called for change. monte. >> well, good evening.

we are at lake marion where tonight people held the candlelight vigil for trayvon martin. this peaceful gathering capped protests in oakland in response to last saturday's verdict. >> none of them. >> about 50 people stood in a circle near lake mara tonight holding candles and reflecting on a week full of outrage. peaceful protests and violence that at times spilled into the streets of oakland. >> people have been angry about it, and have every right to be angry about it, but what's going to get us through this and what's going to transform our nation to make sure there's no more trayvons? that's love. >> about 200 people gathered in front of the federal building in oak labor day to demand that the justice department pursue a civil rights case against george zimmerman. that rally was organized by 17-year-old justin jones, who just graduated from high school. he is the same age as trayvon martin was when he was killed. >> also calling for peace in our

community within the neighborhoods and within oakland and our gay community. we need to end gun violence. that's why we're here. especially the youth. we're trying to get this involved in the modern day civil routes movement. >> reporter: when the maifr took the mike, several people in the crowd heckled her and booed. >> let's make sure we can get the young people of america and particularly young black men. >> it was justin who called the crowd. >> this is a place, an open forum for everyone, so if you want to act radical, go home. >> people are outrage and frustrated, and loofr them are hurt, but we're asking them to take all those emotions and turn into positive people and call for action. >> reporter: afterwards the mayor deflected questions about why police failed to step in on several occasions this past week when protests turned violent. >> the day is the source of these young people. please use the fact that they

are -- >> tonight people shared their stories and talked about race and about their fears and their hopes. >> people don't lock at trayvon and see fear. they look at trayvon and see their son. they see somebody's son. they see somebody's little boy. they want to protect. >> the vigil was organized for human rights. the center that was taking part in the national night out on august 6th to make the streets safer for all youth. live in oakland tonight, monte francis, nbc bay area news. >> thank you. across the bay a smaller group protested in san francisco at the federal building there. police say that rally was also peaceful. no arrests were made. tomorrow a similar demonstration in san jose at city hall. more than 100 cities held rallies in support of trayvon martin today. in new york martin's mother spoke.

martin's father called for people to come together to fight senseless violence. new at 11:00 investigators in east paulo although yoi are asking for the public to help to track down a man who killed a 30-year-old man in the afternoon. he was found about 3:00 this afternoon fear the corner have o'connor street not far from palo alto golf course. the shooting is not believed to be gang-related. investigators are searching for clues tonight after what caused a fire at sunnyveil that shut down a lucky's supermarket for hours. the grocery store did not burn, but two nearby businesses did, and kimberly terri has the latest for us. kimberly. >> diana, i want to show you where it happened. some of the things you see here is from vukz are that has been ongoing on the fas yeahed of these buildings. the most visible damage from that fire today is actually

inside between these two businesses. this is what is left of the family-owned liquor store after a two-alarm fire this afternoon. >> smoke coming from the restaurant. he told me we have a fire started. >> reporter: the owner of that chinese restaurant who did not want to speak to us on camera said he saw smoke coming from the back wall. he and his family grabbed fire extinguishe extinguishers, but then he called 911. >> it's a complex structure in that you have a portion of it under construction and it ajoins working supermarkets that needed to be evacuated and closed. >> reporter: it was evacuated and shut down this afternoon as crews worked to isolate the fire. >> we're still assessing the point of origin. generally we think it was somewhere in between the liquor store and chinese restaurant. >> reporter: both businesses have extensive damage. they say hundreds of thousands of dollars of inventory is

either melted or destroyed for water damage. >> this is our business. this is where we pay our bills, so we'll see what goes from here, you know, moving forward, but i can't say anything else right now. >> reporter: the cause of the fire is still under investigation and no injuries were reported. live in sunnydale, kimberly terri, nbc, bay area news. we are following a developing story in southern california. crews are making progress fighting that large wildfire just west of palm springs. the fire is now about 50% contained. there is concern tonight, however, about thunderstorms that could bring wind and lightning to the area. nearly 6,000 people remain under a mandatory evacuation order in the wrar, and that fire has burned 42 square miles. now to the latest on the asiana airlines craft. the families of the three

chinese teenagers killed have hired lawyers. the family chose krindler and krindler of morning. the one teenager survived the crash and was killed by a responding fire truck. a mother and son filed a lawsuit against the airline in federal court in san francisco. family and friends of the missing toddler spent another day searching for her in oakland and handing out fliers. 21-month-old daf any webb was reported missing near the intersection of 79th avenue and international boulevard three weeks ago. the father said he left her in his car with his elderly mother who has dementia, and then when he came back, the little girl was gone. we helped him search today. >> especially --

>> police say they received several tips in the case, but nothing that led to a possible suspect or location of the little girl. the search for a missing woman from mirinda is over tonight after they found her body in her car at the bottom of a steep ravine. she was last seen leaving her house in her car around 5:00 p.m. thursday. she was reported missing to police yesterday. that's when volunteers started searching for her, and one of them spotted her car down a ravi ravine. the cause of the crash surgeoned investigation. a man is behind bars after a deadly crash in east san jose. witnesses saw at least two cars racing just before 10:00 last night. police say the cars lost control, crashing into a man on a motorcycle and killing him. police arrested one of the drivers on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, drunk driving and hit-and-run. the other driver was taken to the hospital. witnesses say she fell to her death. next at 11:00 what police are

. no foul play expected. that's the latest out of north texas where a woman died after ride a roller coaster at a six flags amusement park. she somehow fell from the ride yesterday. the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. she's been riding the texas giant dubbed the tallest steel hybrid coaster in the world. it measures 14 stories high. more problems for the bay bridge, and this time on the western stand. according to the san francisco chronicle, about 40% of the shock absorbers are leaking lubricant and just like the bold issue on the new eastern span, there are questions weather cal tran ordered the right shocks in the first place. the shocks in question are just below the roadway and are intended to reduce stress during an earthquake. the shocks were installed in 2004 and were expected to last 20 years. crews plan to refill the lubricant sometime in 2015, a fix that's expected to cost about $13 million.

congresswoman nancy pelosi was home in the bay area today to the dedication of a walkway. nancy pelosi the leadership walkway leads to the entrance to the national aid memorial park. she's made fighting hiv and aids a priority of the lawmaker. over the years she has helped fund hiv vaccine research, expand medicaid for people living with hiv. before the event she joined hundreds of volunteers. two south bay men met for the first time today, although their lives are very much intertwined. 24-year-old jack was diagnosed with duke i'ma at the age of 22. last april he received a bone marrow transplant. today there is a reunion. the marrow happened to come from 28-year-old jackson who he met for the first time today with family and friends in san jose. >> i have been looking forward for about a year.

i mean, they told me you get to meet your done o only after a year's time, so i've been hoping that he will make it through the entire time. >> this has given me, like, you know, nothing less than, like, the gift of life. >> the two men both graduated from dumonta vista high school in couper tino, four years apart. he is a 2-year-old german shepherd from the czech republic, and he is patrolling the streets of palo alto. a four-legged crime fighter, eddie joined the force in april and is aaseened to the night -- he and his hander have undergone extensive training. to deal with anything they might encounter. >> he is smart and obedient. he likes to work hard. then on the same token, he is gentle with kids. he is great at home. he is fun to be around too.

this is how the coast guard found 54-year-old anthony richmond. after hooking a large ahi, his boat flipped over, and he was dragged under water. after freeing himself from the fishing line around his legs, he climbed to the boat's hull to call for help. he ended up being airlifted to shore, but friends who came to help salvage his boat realized the ahi tuna was still hooked. they were able to reel in the 230 pound fish, right the boat and tow vrlg back to port for perhaps the best tall fishing tale. a little old man and the sea going on there. we'll check in with meteorologist ron may eta. it's a nice day today. it's going to warm up tomorrow. sfla it looks like we're going to see our temperatures climbing april few more degrees. right now still 65 in livermore. 63, san francisco with low clouds and mist moving into doubt you. 61 in san jose, and we have a strong sea breeze. west wind at livermore, and it should push clouds locally

inland tomorrow morning. we'll wake up to areas of low clouds clearing to the coast during the day. 80s. maybe near 90s inland. mostly 80s in the valleys and 60s and 70s, and then by the end of the weekend, in fact, as early as around midday tomorrow, you might notice high clouds coming to the south. that may briefly increase the slight chance of seeing thunder. now, i don't think the display will be as wild as you've been seeing in las vegas. that was from last night, but once again, round two happening in las vegas with flash flood warnings in effect, and you can see how this moisture is actually going from east to west. back into southern california. moving somewhat clockwise around the ridge of high pressure which is just off to the east. today it helped fire up thunderstorms in the sierra. the moisture drifting up out of the south, and more of this is going to come closer to the bay area during the day late tomorrow. we thu mainly just high clouds to start. you may notice it in the day tomorrow. clouds coming up in the south moving into the bay area. then by the time we get into monday and tuesday, we may see just enough moisture to fire off

scattered showers. especially along the coastal hills around the mountains, and maybe some of the inland valleys. something to watch out for come monday night and tuesday. tomorrow morning a repeat of what we tau yesterday. low clouds. nothing but sunshine for inland valleys. clouds coming up out of the south. showers and unfortunately, probably an increase in humidity early next week. 50s for the most part overnight into tomorrow morning as we watch the low clouds clear. pretty nice day in san jose. breezy at times. 83 degrees. still some near the 0s south of downtown san jose, and low 70s around santa cruise. mid to upper 80s. near 90. livermore. upper 80s at -- and cool and breezy again in san francisco. 65 degrees. 70s in the north bay with partly cloudy skies. the trend will be watching that
