coming up. >> what will everyone do if that happens? we're also watching the commute as things start to build and we see the sunrise. we'll show you where things are slowing coming up on the peninsula. 5:00, already getting that sunlight over the bay area. good morning to you. temperatures are going to be hot. we're talking about 87 degrees in santa cruz. yeah, it's going to be a scorcher inland. i'll sort it out for you and let you know when this heat will finally break in your full forecast. it's something you'll certainly want to see. take a look at this. sun coming up over the bay area. isn't that beautiful? >> take it all in. >> as well as, look at the bottom of your screen, it is friday, june 28th. this is today in the "today in." it is a beautiful start, one of my favorite words in the vocabulary, friday. good morning morning, thank you for joining us.
5:01 am
i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. consider yourself warned this morning. overnight b.a.r.t. unions officially issued a 72-hour notice to strike. it comes monday. the entire system could shut down causing massive traffic problems across the entire bay area. "today in the bay's" marla tellez live at the b.a.r.t. station in fremont. we're expected to learn more about this decision in just a few hours. >> reporter: that's right. i'll speak more about that in a moment. first i want to start off by saying this 72-hour notice unions gave last night is actually a courtesy notice in that they aren't required to let people know we might be going on strike. so in one sense i guess b.a.r.t. riders you can be grateful if that's at all possible. now is the time to start thinking about what if b.a.r.t. service is not in service come monday morning? we can tell you that san francisco bay ferry is planning to increase its service. a spokesperson says they'll be prepared to carry 50,000 passengers across the water
5:02 am
compared to the 20,000 they typically do. ac transit says it will also boost the number of buses it runs on a daily basis. this is where it gets even messier. believe it or not, ac transit has also authorized a strike. that agency's contract expires sunday night at midnight, the same time b.a.r.t.'s does. ac transit workers could walk the picket line on monday as well. the last time b.a.r.t. went on strike was in 1997. then 225,000 weekday riders depended on b.a.r.t. the gridlock was just brutal. today an estimated 400,000 people ride b.a.r.t. every weekday. most riders we spoke to say it's going to be a nightmare, but some are actually taking it in stride and saying we'll have to simply drive. >> i've been driving before the city. i like b.a.r.t. because it's con voon yent for us. if they strike, what are you going to do?
5:03 am
>> my suspicion is that if b.a.r.t. stops, it will stop ac transit as well. that's going to put work at a standstill completely. >> reporter: at issue is salary, pension and health care benefits. b.a.r.t. workers want a 23% salary increase over three years and their health care and pension benefits protected. while b.a.r.t. is asking its workers to start contributing to its pension and to pay more for the health care benefits. of course, i do have calls in to both b.a.r.t. this morning and their unions. i'm waiting to hear back. regardless, we will learn more about this potential strike from b.a.r.t.'s unions. they plan to hold a 10:00 a.m. press conference. for more on how you can get around this potential b.a.r.t. strike, let's send it back into the studio where mike is standing by with all that good information. >> a lot of folks might disregard it because they don't ride b.a.r.t. but you have to care. b.a.r.t. takes 400,000 off the
5:04 am
roadways. places like this, the san mateo bridge will be affected. over toward the peninsula westbound is your commute. the san mateo bridge is often an alternate for folks heading the the bay bridge which is going to be slam packed if folks aren't able to use the b.a.r.t. system. they'll have to take the roads. ac transit potentially could take you over that as well as the ac express, the dumbarton express over highway 84, taking you back between the peninsula, 101 and 880. that will mean more congestion for 101 and 880. it's going to hit the thoroughfare between those two sections of the bay area. heading through the city b.a.r.t. will be an issue because it takes folks in through the city and is an alternate to the muni lines. muni hasn't talked about any problems for the service, but that will be an overload on the system because the folks will have to stay off the b.a.r.t. lines and head through the muni lines or above ground. over here in the east bay, an
5:05 am
obvious affect, they'll also funnel through the bay bridge and take you as far as to dublin and pleasanton. this is going to be a big ripple effect. back to you. >> it will, mike. great perspective, great insight. thank you for the heads up. we can also tell you b.a.r.t. workers not the only ones threatening to walk off the job next week. union employees, including lifeguards and maintenance crews of more than 60 east bay county parks threatening to strike starting on the 4g9 of july. those workers say they've been pushing for a new contract for the past six months. the east bay regional park district says it has offered a four-year contract that includes an 8.5% salary increase and better benefits. the two parties have not come to an agreement and a strike means that many park lake also be closed on the busy 4th of july holiday. i think it's a very unwise decision. we can work out these differences in a different way besides impacting the public. this really is unfortunate for
5:06 am
the public and we're going to do our best to have the parks open and have them safe. >> that is really sad. come on, really? the holiday? that's not right. >> negotiations will continue. both sides expected to meet with a state mediator on monday. it is 5:06. a member of the pta at a san jose elementary school facing charges of embezzlement. keith dennis was the volunteer treasure of the pta at lynn haven elementary school. place say he wrote checks to himself for more than $27,000. his lawyer says he's deeply sad denned by the charges. dennis is suspected of stealing from school fund-raisers. he's currently out on bail awaiting trial. san jose police right now asking for your help this morning as they try to find a robbery suspect. officers would like you to take a look at these photos. they say this man robbed a

convenient store in south san jose last month. he was last seen running away wearing a black hoodie, black shoes with white stripes. a special memorial service held for the emeryville man who vanished. service in portland, oregon this morning where bo rasmussen's family lives. he was last seen the afternoon of that may race when friends say he left them to go to ocean beach. his clothing was later found on that beach, indicating he may have gone swimming, but his body was never found. the a's are running into another hurdle this morning for a new stadium in oakland. the city's port commission postponed its approval of a legal settlement. that settlement would free up about 50 acres of waterfront land near jack london square. the board's attorney says more time is needed to review the legal documents. the meeting is now scheduled for tuesday. this year's annual san francisco pride parade could be
5:08 am
the biggest in history following the supreme court's major decisions on gay marriage. "today in the bay's" christie smith live in san francisco right now with more details on that and all the preparations they're getting ready for that will take place this weekend. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. usually the pride parade is quite something on its own. each year about a million people attend. this year is going to be just a little bit different with the huge decisions coming down on doma and prop 8. so everyone expecting this to be a year unlike any other with a celebration that may have unofficially started wednesday after the high court's decision on same-sex marriage. the parade route of course lined with rainbow flags. san francisco police say plainclothes and uniform officers will be out in force to make sure everyone stays safe. cameras will be lined up along market street to maintain and watch over the parade route. now, keith jones worked as a

student intern with harvey milk back in the 1970s. he says with the defeat of prop 8, this year's pride will be one to remember. >> i'm grateful to be alive. i miss my friends that aren't here with us today. but i feel very, very fortunate. >> reporter: now, i also wanted to mention that all the plaintiffs in the prop 8 case back home now. i'm betting they're going to get a roaring round of applause. they will be marching in the pride parade, too. the transgender march kicks off this weekend at dolores park. san francisco mayor ed reid will be speaking. >> big weekend, christie smith. thank you very much. a warm weekend coming our way as well. >> warm is an understatement. >> let's check in with christina. >> good morning to you, jon and laura. good morning to you at home. i want to start with this live picture over the bay bridge. if you have outdoor activities, cleaning, anything you need to do outside, right now is a great time to take care of it. it is going to be a scorcher this afternoon.
