ce -- live at moffitt field, stephanie trong, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, stephanie. crowds gathered at crissy field earlier this morning to see the sight. "endeavour" making two pass by the golden gate bridge. there was silence from the field of hundreds of people as the shuttle came into view carried by a modified 747 on its way from sacramento. people got there before dawn to try and catch a piece of history themselves. it's being retired in southern california, as you heard her say. one woman said seeing it just made her feel proud. >> i think it just made me really proud of our country. and with everything going on overseas and all the negative stuff that we're getting hit with in the united states, it made me so proud again. >> the shuttle came in from the east and headed north before turning around to fly by the bridge. traffic on the span kept moving, though people did slow down to try and get a glimpse. now among those at crissy field today, a san francisco photographer whose photographs are shared all over the world on facebook.

today's photos of the shuttle no exception. phil legrew took nearly 400 photographs. he posted them to his facebook page and they were immediately shared. he felt proud that he could both share the images and that the shuttle came to the bay area. >> it's very satisfying. a lot of my facebook friends are photographers that i've met. and some are -- i came from the east coast. a lot are from the east coast. a lot have never been to san francisco. a lot of them have never seen the shuttle. a lot of times even high school classmates and people back home that had experienced some things, it's kind of fun to share with them and family. >> phil came prepared. during the last few days he studied climate reports to decide the best place to shoot. he cross crissy field because that way the golden gate bridge could of course be in the background. we asked for your photos as well. you came through for us. these are a few examples of the great work you did capturing today's historic flight.

longer, a little thinner. >> it is a little thinner. it's a little different here. >> most of the features are similar to what you have on the 4s. >> does it arm the same way? >> it's a little faster. it has a faster chip and the apps are a little longer. it's lighter. >> so what do we do with this old relic? >> that you pass on to your son. >> is that the 4? you are so behind times. >> the entry model into the world of apple. >> i feel so embarrassed. >> all right. very interesting. >> thanks. >> you bet. >> well, cuts to staffing at san jose's police department is forcing the outgoing chief to move some officers out of the office and on to the beat. nbc bay area's damian trujillo is live. damian, is the new strategy working at this point? >> reporter: you know what? you can call it operation swarm, if you will, jessica, but that's basically what police are doing. they're swarming the streets with more patrol cars, and that might be part of the reason why we haven't had a homicide here in the last few weeks.

[ speaking spanish ] >> lorenzo says he had no idea there was a shooting in his neighborhood last night. the last few weeks have actually been quiet in san jose for homicides after a spike in august that saw eight murders in 11 days. >> whatever problem it, we're going to put the resources in to address it. >> reporter: and the chief did just that. he pulled detectives out of their desks and sent them to the streets to help patrol officers who were being outgunned. the strategy seems to be working. >> you know, the gang members that are out there understand that we are out there looking for them. and if they're engaged in illegal activity. that will be stopped and they will be arrested. >>. [ speaking spanish ] >> reporter: this san jose mother says she has seenmore officers on the streets lately. chief moore knows the increased patrols come at a price. burglaries are up, along wh other crimes, with no detectives

isn't getting any easier, but employment in the bay area is on the upswing. not a surprise for a lot of people. the unemployment rate dipped here in the bay area, just a bit, from 10.7 to 10.6% because of the booming tech industry, the bay area has been the strongest regional area in the state. both the south bay and the san francisco region in recent months have posted the fastest rate of annual employment growth in the entire country. meanwhile, economists at ucla release at report just yesterday predicting that california's economy will rebound even more slowly than previously anticipated. on this alzheimer's action day, we're taking a look at the growing number of americans diagnosed with alzheimer's before they even turn age 65. marianne favro is here to show us the impact they're having on their kids. we're talking caregivers in their 20s instead of 30s and 40s like it used to be. >> reporter: yes, here in the bay area, some of the children of alzheimer's patients are as young as 16. and for many, it is a difficult adjustment, because instead of

their mom or dad caring for them, they now must care for their parent. 26-year-old laura lucas of campbell is a young professional starting her career, but she has also been forced to take on an unexpected job, that of caregiver to her mom who has alzheimer's. >> she recognizes me. i can see it in her eyes that she knows me as a familiar face. i know that she doesn't know that i'm her daughter. >> doctors diagnosed her mother two years ago at age 56. >> i kind of thought that by the time i got to be this age, she would be somebody that i was spending most of my time with. and somebody that i could be counting on to help me through life's landmarks, relationship, some day marriage, some day babies. and it's tough knowing that she is not going to be there for that. >> reporter: and she is not alone. the number of children in their 20s who are now caring for parents with alzheimer's is growing. according to the alzheimer's association, 4% of the 5.4 million americans living with

alzheimer's were diagnosed before the age of 65. which is why the alzheimer's association now offers support groups for caregivers of patients diagnosed in their 50s. group facilitator erica smith knows the challenges. her own mother was diagnosed at age 52. >> i would spend about four nights a week over at my dad's house, helping take care of my mom. >> reporter: she says the toughest part is enjoying time with your parent, even though your relationship has changed. a tough adjustment for laura lucas, who has always considered her mom her best friend. >> and i need her advice so much. and i can't. it's ironically, the reason i need her advice is her. so that's the hardest part. >> reporter: new projections show over the next 20 years, the number of californians living with alzheimer's will double. marianne favro, nbc bay area news that. >> is a brave young woman. let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. it was an exciting day for a lot of people.

i was up there on my roof. my neck was cranked. >> did you get a good view? >> i got a good view, but i don't think as good as your pictures. >> i was up there early. look how small the plane turned out in my photo there is the pacific ocean back there behind it. we know we got in a lot of other pictures that were extremely close. take a look at this from my facebook. this is wes who gave us this shot as it flew right over downtown san francisco. again, this marking the end of the 30-year space shuttle program with the "endeavour" piggybacked on the 747 today. the forecast just really came through just in time. we had these winds anywhere from 10 to 20 miles per hour, primarily out of the north. that not only warmed us up. this is 70s and 80s for the interior valleys, but it also cleared out the fog. let's take a live look at the camera on this friday. mid to high level cloud cover. even a it will humidity getting imported in. we're not expecting any rainfall with this one. the next 48 hours, what we're going to find is this area of

low pressure. we have been tracking now for six days. we just want this thing to get out of here because the storm tracks have really been all over the place each and every day. but the most important thing to remember as we head into your weekend, it's going to be taking more of this dryer storm track. we'll also have warmer air to the south. we'll be in between two different systems. 50s at the coastline. also a few 60s. but primarily an offshore wind on saturday. so that will give us anywhere from 70s to 80s. so it will be warm inland for the first part of your weekend. and as we head throughout sunday, we'll undergo slight cooling. but definitely not cold weather. with the up and down temperature swings, allergy forecast will stay from moderate to low for the mold category. daytime highs on saturday should top out right near our seasonal averages with 84234 san jose. 86 in morgan hill. also 79 in palo alto. and the warmest spot will be 87 in walnut creek. 88 in concord. also 86 in livermore and 84 in
