president obama as he arrived at san francisco hotel thursday night. >> i'm a sporter of the president. i worked on both campaigns and we're here to support him. we're here to show that he has support to move forward. >> reporter: many of them hoping to get a few seconds of the president's time to share their concern about climate change. >> this political economic system that we have in place right now is a major machine and it's going to take a lot to change its direction and it needs to change now. >> reporter: president obama is in the bay area to meet with silican valley heavy hitters all to raise money for the democratic ticket. many willing to dish out $2,000 a plate. >> mr. obama. >> reporter: a different welcoming took place where

early in the day he met with technology company owners. >> i hope he approves of the place we kept the place up. the lawns mowed, houses painted. >> he's the president of the united states, it doesn't get bigger than that. i would come out here if it was robert redford too. >> reporter: there's a large security presence inside. the barricade is also up. all fairmont guests are required to go through a front gated entrance until the president leaves tomorrow. the president is scheduled to make a speech at a wal-mart store in mountain view tomorrow morning. the store on showers drive was selected for a speech on energy

efficiency and renewable power. it gets about 25% of its electricity on solar power. we saw barricades outside this evening. protesters say they will be there. more details now on the president's visit. the president has made 17 trips to california many of those trips included fundraisers now that he can't run for reelection, his fundraisers are for his democratic candidates. prices range from $1,000 to $32,000 that azimeth mentioned. there's accusations that toliver threatened a family after they followed him from the scene. tonight we spoke with the driver who was with his family when he says he saw a 49ers player hit a bicyclists. and that driver is now pursuing

a lawsuit. jana katsuyama is live to show us the pictures he took after the collision. >> reporter: the man says he saw toliver leave recklessly. he said the trouble just continued when he followed toliver's car. >> reporter: 49ers defensive back chris coliver is now legally on the defense. he appeared in court last month for criminal misdemeanor hit- and-run charges and felony possession of brass knuckles. now he's accused in a civil lawsuit of assault, battery and issuing threats and racial slurs. >> i heard the tires screeching. >> reporter: the plaintiff mark santos spoke with us by phone with his attorney. santos says in march he hit coliver hit a bicyclists and

take off. santos says he was driving with his wife and children when he followed coliver. that's when he says coliver got out of his car. >> he kept threatening me. telling me to get out of the way. that he had something for us if we didn't get out of the way. >> when he comes back out of the car then he came out with his brass knuckles. >> we think the nfl needs to take a hard look at the penalty of their players an the people associated with the nfl. you have a professional athlete that is think they can get away with anything. this lawsuit is about accountability. >> reporter: santos' attorney says so far they have not had any response from coliver. he did not respond our calls

tonight for comment. live tonight, jana katsuyama. >> we also contacted the 49ers and the team said they had no comment. officers were called to a home on the first block of amador avenue just before 4:00 for a disturbance. when they arrived they found an injured man on the ground. despite attempts to save his life, he died at the scene. the victim's name is not being released. police say they are holding a man believed to be involved in the killing. still no word tonight on a motive. authorities think that a fugitive fire chief who's wanted for murder may be hiding near the santa cruz mountains. investigators say orville fleming is an avid outdoors man who frequently visits the area. calfire fire stations are also on high alert. >> reporter: the calfire stations are on alert not for fire but for a tpaoáuf to the best -- for a fugitive.

wanted person hiding out here. fleming met his girlfriend two years ago through my red book. the two made allegedly made a sex tape that featured fleming, douglas and other firefighters. a tape douglas was using to extort money before her murder. >> a sex tape that's irrelevant. where's the sex tape. that's pointless to the fact that my sister was murdered. >> reporter: the sheriff tells me its deputies have been told to be on the look out for fleming, noelle walker, ktvu news. a lot of students stayed home today from two schools in danville that were the targets of threatening messages. attendance was down about 50% even though there was a stepped up police presence at both john baldwin elementary and charlotte wood middle school. according to a letter sent out

by the principal, authorities have now caught a person they believe is responsibility for those threatening messages. uc berkeley wants to expand a recent facility. the lawrence berkeley national lab campus is planned for a plot of land on mead street which is off of richmond bay. amber lee is there tonight with the concerns that some community members are expressing about that project. amber-- >> frank, the expansion will add to this research facility behind me. uc wants to more than double its size. residents tell me they want to be part of that expansion. uc berkeley's richmond field station sits on 100 acres. residents say it's a beacon of hope for the future. that the proposed expansion could turn this into a field of dreams for a city that has struggled with crime and unemployment. >> something that our children can prepare for in school that they can have the right education and the right schools and jobs to be able to work

there one day. >> reporter: the people are very excited about this process. >> reporter: but that excitement is tempered with concern about how the project will benefit the community. the 133-acre addition will bring jobs to the area. just how many university officials haven't said. because they are still looking for funding for the expansion. community leader tamisha walker who served time behind bars says many formerly incarcerated residents in this city need a second chance that a job can provide. >> there's no jobs to put people into. then where are we? we're stuck. >> reporter: hundreds packed into the town hall meeting tonight. state assemblyman who's running for congress was among the politicians and uc officials answering the communities questions. he says the city needs to partner with uc to create job opportunities. >> she would just be -- it would just be a nice facility with fences.

>> reporter: there will be a conference to supplement the funding. the civil trial over access to martin's beach in san mateo county began yesterday. martin's beach is about 6 miles south of half-moon bay. it was a favorite spot for families but all of that stopped four years ago when the landowner blocked access to the only road leading to the beach. lawsuits followed. surfers argued it was a violation of the california coastal act. the owner is costa, he's been ordered to testify next week. and could wet weather affect your morning commute? all for just the path of a system bringing light showers to parts of the north bay. >> and

more than a dozen states do allow corporal punishment. a bill to ban the process nationwide was introduced in 2010 but not voted on. a trial ended in a dead lock for a man who was arrested for protesting the police shooting of a 13-year-old boy in sonoma county. ramon cairo is accused of resisting arrest. but jurors could not agree on a verdict for either charge. cairo's attorney is calling it a victory for free speech. cairo was one of many people protesting the shooting of andy lopez who was carrying a soft air gun that looked like a real rifle. today's bill pushes the start date back to june of next

year and imposes a requirement on smart phones but not on tablets. >> if we can make it a disincentive to take the cell phone, there's a good likelihood we will see a reduction in those crimes. oakland's interim police chief says 60% of all robberies include a cell phone. and in san francisco, 2/3 of all robberies include a cell phone. a battered women's group is again denying it contacted any state lawmakers with concerns about a kill switch bill. three senators offices said they were contacted by weave inc, women escaping a violent environment. both offices admitted they were bombarded by reporters on senate bill 962 which led to the confusion. ktvu followed with the staff at

it's been one year since interim oakland police chief stepped down and permanent police chief has not been named. we spoke with oakland mayor gene -- jean quan. >> reporter: jean quan stood side by side with the interim police chief. but we want to know when title

-- when his title will go from interim to chief. went is the third interim chief since 2011. while he wasn't commenting today he has applied to head up the department. under his interim leadership homicides are down. crime is also down in key areas. reports of aggravated assaults down 6% from last year. burglaries down 11% and auto theft down 9%. the department was at its highest compliance level ever under the direction of interim chief went. >> the department continues to get better on the crime reduction and into meeting the goal of monitor. >> reporter: many said crime is still a major concern. and that oakland needs a

permanent chief in place. >> i think he should be a permanent chief. too many changes is not too much good. >> and there's a lot of instability. so some stability in the police force you know would be great. >> reporter: despite questions quan would not say if she's questioned went. she says she should have an announcement about who the chief will be in mid-march. ac transit is considering its options after a passenger was awarded damages in a multi million dollars lawsuit. what happened back in 2011 that led to the suit. maria francisco was thrown from the seat when the bus she was on hit a speed bump going twice the speed limit. since then she has had three back surgeries. yesterday a jury awarded her $14 million for medical bills and pain and suffering. francisco's 4-year-old daughter

police have identified the suspect at 25-year-old jamie juan era s of san francisco. he surrendered yesterday and is charged with felony hit-and-run and felony manslaughter. investigators looking into the hit-and-run death of a los angeles police officer say the suspect intentionally hit the officers cruiser. 32-year-old roberto sanchez died as a result of that collision. investigators say 20-year-old minor vorerla rammed the police car in an effort to stop it from going after his friend who was trying to flee police. another officer hit in the car is still recovering. police are asking for the public's help in tracking down an identity theft suspect. he rented a flat bed truck and carburetor and never returned them. an investigation revealed he

new at 10:00, a new warning for parents about the highly contagious disease whooping cough. we told you about confirmed cases in morelo elementary school. now that school is reporting of additional cases in that campus. whooping cough starts with a cold like symptoms that turns into uncontrollable coughing. more than a dozen pets have been rescued from a pill filthy house in monterey county. four puppies and two cats are now being nursed back to help. police are saying that they're being taken out of shocking conditions. the house was cluttered with piles of clothing and garbage. the animals have a variety of

there's growing outrage around the world to the disappearance of 276 girls who were kidnapped in nigeria by extremists. today the nigerian government says it'll be difficult to find them. they say boca haram likely split up the girls. ken wayne has the story. >> reporter: two marchs and rallies are planned. aid is going out to groups in nigeria that may be able to

pressure the government there to act. the kidnapping of hundreds of girls is sending concern through the people not just in nigeria, but those who have made the bay area home. >> even if they do come back. they're not going to be the same. >> reporter: evilocha who was born in nigeria and moved here as a law student now a professor at east bay. >> i have four girls so every day that i go to sleep, i wonder how those moms and dads sleep. >> reporter: she says she has talked to relatives in nigeria who describe between bombings and kidnappings a nervous atmosphere. >> i think every nigerian is very shocked for the government to acknowledge it happened. >> reporter: she says she's encouraged by the social media effort to bring attention to the kidnappings. global fund for women is sending money. >> obviously we're outraged. and we're deeply concerned about what's being happening.
