from the scene of a bank robbery. the police arrested smith in this woman's driveway. >> he kept saying "open the door, open the door, open the door". >> the police say they have a shooting of the -- have a video of the chase but does not show the shooting. by all accounts the officer was a beloved member of the community. he volunteered in the community and touched many, many lives. >> reporter: inside of the high school gym there are memories of a coach, a man who brought home a championship banner. >> he said pain is temporary and pride is forever. i took that quote with me. >> reporter: jefferson wore 32 during that run. on this day she placed her jersey on the steps of the pd in honor of her coach officer

today flags are at half-staff for a man now known -- >> as a true american hero. >> reporter: back to you. >> california governor jerry brown ordered flags at the state capitol to be flown at half-staff to honor the memory of officer capoot. he said his bravery, commitment and selfless service will not be forgotten. a california national guard soldier from san jose has been kill inside action in afghanistan. the department of defense says 21-year-old specialist shawn walsh died on wednesday in host, province. he was assigned to the 185th military battalion from pittsburg. he is the second killed in action in afghanistan. >> a wild police chase in oakland leaves a trail of smashed cars and shaken victims. putting the pieces together. he is live tonight at the spot where the pursuit finally

ended. >> reporter: that is where the high-speed chase came to a halt. you can see the hole torn in the fence and a light pole knocked to the ground. this is one of three different crash scenes but it was not where this caper ended. just after noon a parole at large left the police on a chase that reached 100 miles an hour. this car was one of several smashed into by the suspect's car at brookdale. >> the mercedes, bam, hit me, spin me a little bit. slid, hit the little toyota four runner and still kept going. >> reporter: the driver continued on until he crashed head on to a toyota camry. >> all of a sudden a car came across and came along and crossed the lane and down my side. i tried to avoid him. avoid the car and he hit me right it in the front. >> reporter: after that, the suspect whose identity the police have yet to release carjacked a family of three. >> he got out with a gun, a firearm with his left hand and pointed it at the -- at a car

that thought, because of the accident, got him out of the car and got in their suv and took off. >> he ended up here on montana street flipping the suv. the suspect ran into the freeway and on to harold street where he tried to carjack this car. the officers arrived and pinned him with his car. >> man i usually have my daughter and family in the car. i am happy they were not in there. >> the suspect was take tone the hospital with minor injuries as are two other. one a carjack victim and the other a hit and run victim. the officers say they recovered a gun inside of the wrecked suv here on this street. back to you. contra costa county coroner's office identified the victim of a freeway accident as 18-year-old sydney plumber from brentwood t. began with a crash at 3:15 a.m. on eastbound highway 24 near pleasant hill road. the highway patrol says summer was a passenger in a car involved in the accident. she was waiting safely in the center divide area when she decided to walk back to the car

and that is when show was hit. the fatal accident closed three eastbound lanes for the next two hours. almost 10,000 people remain evacuated in the reno area tonight. firefighters now have the upper hand on a destructive wind- tkreufpdriven wildfire. people and 4,000 homes were jolted out of their beds and told to evacuate. a elderly man died of a heart attack and a firefighter was injured due to burns. 25 homes were damaged or destroyed and 2,000 acres burned. firefighters say the winds died down and the fire is mostly contained now. >> those who were evacuated can be rest assure today that we will be dog everything within our ability to ensure their properties are pro terbgted while they are not occupied tkaouring this emergency situation. >> snowfall is helping the firefighterring effort.

evacuated residents should be able to return home by midday tomorrow. you can view more images by clicking the link on top of our home page ktvu.com. on the economy watch tonight we have new figures that show california's jobless rate fell slightly last month. the employment ployment put october's rate at 11.7%. and that is an improvement from 11.9% the previous month. california add 26,000 jobs. we have the second highest unemployment rate, nevada is the highest. three counties are still experiencing double digit unemployment. however, the jobless rate ticked lower in all nine counties last month. seasonal hiring and schools was a big reason for the improvement. time is running out for the congressional super committee tow come up with a deficit reduction plan. they suggest democrats rejected a republican plan that would of

the hospital. the authorities in san francisco are warning the occupy camp that it will not be allowed to go on indefendantily. the city leaders say their main -- indefinitely. the city leaders say their main concern is cleanliness. some say the movement is not about providing services to the homeless, others argue homelessness is symptom of injustice that they are fighting to change. some near the camp say they are concerned about the effect that occuppers might have on shoppers. minutes ago they flipped a switch on the christmas lights that begin the holiday shopping season. fireworks lit up the sky. but many shop owners say they don't care if the demonstrators are naughty or nice but stevenson tells us they just want them gone. ho, ho, ho. >> reporter: santa came to san francisco at the center's 25th winter carnival. >> we see us even though it is

a week before thanksgiving they see it as the official kick off of the holiday season. >> reporter: this year others the celebration is sharing the plaza with the occupy san francisco movement. >> i am calling the city a slumlord for not cleaning that up immediately. >> reporter: ahead of the building owners and managers associations say crime and conditions are hurting neighboring businesses. the police statistics indicate the number of crimes reported in 500 feet of the plaza jumped 49% since the camp was established here october 15th. today, as he visited, the mayor acknowledged the anger felt by businesses butted he is proceeding carefully. >> i don't think the small business owners would want that kind of reaction that happened in in oakland in other places. >> reporter: they say they made big strides to keep the camp safe and clean and be good neighbors. >> this is what it is. we don't need to effect their business nor do we have the desire to effect it negatively. >> i think there is plenty of room for everybody and we really are focused on kicking

they used bricks to make a star wars character. the final character was a yoga as a jolly old elf. turning to bay area weather, yesterday at this time we talk about showers. we are still seeing that right now? >> yes. showers are picking up across one part of the bay area as the system moves over the region. a bit of a break on your saturday and then another one developing upstream. right now in the mountains i can show you this one on storm tracker 2. there is a live look. notice the main action on the radar in the southern area and the coastline and fremont coming in tighter here you can see the yellow indicating heavier downpour right now. closing in in the next 15 to 20 minutes. the bulk will head out to the south and the east over the next two to three hours.
