francisco streets. bay area business leaders gather in san francisco. how today's event could pave the way for jobs. . how cabdrivers could be concerned their their safety in specific parts of the city. . >> this is bay area news at 7:00. >> good evening i'm g asia. this is bay area news at 7:00. protestors are in san francisco. this is live footage who are right now just exiting the bart station. there's been no disruptions to bart service or arrests. some 30 protestors made their way up and down market street and into the

station a couple times. san francisco police are also out in force to make sure the protests do not get out of hand. they are upset of the fatal shooting of a homeless man by police. they will continue to hold demonstrations until bart meets their demands. . president obama today sent his proposed job's creation bill to congress and urged law makers to pass immediately. >> this is a bill that will put people back to work all across the country. a bill that will help our economy. >> a few hours ago a large envelope containing the act was delivered to the house of representative. pass the 447 billion dollar measure with quote no games, no politics and no delays. limits tax deductions and ends corporate tax breaks.

executives. stock was up slightly today above 7 dollars a share. . sent wall street into a tail spin. the dow ended with 68 gain. . police want cabdrivers in the city to be on alert because of a series of robberies. the latest one happened early this morning. investigators think the same man is responsible. >> taxi driver had no idea a fellow cabdriver was robbed on the same street he was driving on. >> usually they put a memo and there is no memo in the company. >> police say a 56-year-old cabdriver picked up a man and asked to be driven. during the drive he asked him to take him somewhere else. >> the robber held a knife to his throat and demanded his

money and he took the cash. >> police say since july, 8 cabdrivers have been robbed. investigators have arrested a man for one of the robberies but they believe another man is responsible for the others. >> we do think it is the same person and that he in fact, the last two robberies were probably committed by ana complice. >> police have looked at video but say it is too blurry. gonzalez says he is going to take precaution. >> maybe trying to stay away from this area, you know? why should i risk my life if thinks happen like this in here. >> he also tells us police describe the robber as a black man in his 40s or 50s and wearing all black.

>> today the national september 11th memorial opened its doors to the public. >> wonderful feeling to know we're with these beautiful souls. >> michael bloom berg visited personally today. and the names of the 3,000 victims are inscribed on panels. tickets to the memorials are free but you must get them online. . marking the 10th anniversary of the al tacks at the national flight 93 memorial. tonight a private ceremony was held there. almost 500 family members, police, fire and emergency workers attended today's ceremony. . not guilty. that was the plea today from two men accused of killing an oakland boy in a

drive by shooting. each face one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder. they were carrying out a gang related drive by when they hit the boy that stood on the sidewalk. the next court appearance is a pretrial hearing set for october 17th. . prosecutors have decided not to file charges of a man who left a football player in acoma. a player visiting the us suffered a brain injury last june. police arrested patrick on charges. he was released from jail on friday. prosecutors say they are still investigating this case. . firefighters wracking up a lot of overtime. they have to work volume teary or mandatory overtime. more people retire recently than were expected.

it's cheaper to pay overtime than hire more people. officials say part of the overtime budget may be used this fall to fund 40 new firefighters. . said to pay almost 100 million dollars for upgrades and 75 million dollars for the bridge project. there are no plans right now to increase tolls to cover those cost. in the past they have raised tolls to close the gaps. . offering online courses. school is set to unveil courses in january on a range of topics. hoping to raise about 6 million dollars by charging nonstudents for the courses. the university says about 5,000 of the slots could be taken by students in china. . a major highway construction project begins in the south bay.

today at oakland bakery. neldonsdan i sh bakery. created by former employees of the bakery after the 81-year-old store closed last july. the bakery now offers more of a taste of oakland. . a traffic congestion project is finally underway. it could be a long tedious cure. >>reporter: the long awaited express way improvement project is up and running with federal funding finally in place. crews began the 8 million dollar project that will widen roadways in an area that includes the shopping center, the mall, as

well as highway 85. >> you are going to get stuck. something that would be 15 minutes to get through, it's going to take you a good 45 minutes. >> so is this good news? >> yeah. they are going to get it fixed. it's a double edged sword. the good with the bad. >> construction will go from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. saturdays 10 to 4 and sundays 8 to 5:00 p.m.. and construction will now run into the holiday season. >> christmas time and the holidays, they have to get the cops out to direct traffic and some of the shopper center areas don't want to close. >> today the county says workers will stay out of the way. >> during the christmas season they have to pull back and not be working. >> officials acknowledge it will be tough reminding the public shops will be open yet asking

people not to drive here dpuring those times whenever possible. robert handa, channel 2 news. >> you can get updates on the closure by looking on the home page at ktvu.com. . we continue to follow developing news. a live look of what's happening on 6th and market. not too far from the pow ell street station. protestors were in the streets briefly but as we can see, it looks like just about everyone is there on the sidewalk. we see a lot of people talking. you hear shouting in the background. this has been going on about 2 hours. they are upset with the agency and keep up these monday evening protests until bart police give in to some of their other demands. the main concern here is traffic. the sidewalk is very

busy but the streets appear to be clear. we did see protestors going out a few minutes ago. that still could be the case. we'll stay on top of this with a full update on 10:00 news. . producer is recalling 185,000 pounds of ground turkey because of salmonella concerns. now, a test sample from the same plant where that turkey was processed has tested positive. you can find a link to the products being recalled by going to our web page. . testing meat could become the latest battle. the american meat institute announced today it's opposing testing for the bacteria. the vice president said increased monitoring would be too expensive.

the usda mandates testing for only the common strains. . the young star of a popular cable series has died. 39-year-old andy whit fi eld played in spartac us. he had cancer of the blood. he died in sydney surrounded by family. . a new study is taking aim at sponge bob square pants. the cartoon impairs the minds of 4 year olds. children were easily distracted after watching the show. the cartoon changed scenes every 11 seconds. and children watching slower shows had fewer problems. . 11 million fish have been caught in screens around the

delta pumps. explains why fisherman don't consider this good news. >> i'd like to get a fish report if you don't mind. >>reporter: the captain of this boat used to take out two groups a day. now he's down to two away week. >> very difficult. >> indicating the fish population is increasing but slowly. from january 1 to september 7th. california fish and game reporting catching 11 million fish in the screens around the delta pumps mostly split tails but 35 thousand were also caught and relocated. >> i haven't seen 11 million fish out there. >> we spoke with fish biologists who say the majority survive the salvage process but they are so small that fisherman may not notice. >> the bottom line is none of us know where the fish are. >> because 75 percent of fish

die in route to the screens, that means 100 million were sacrificed. >> they understand that and they factor in prescreen loss when deciding how many listed fish are allowed to be taken. >> the pumps kill millions of fish but just because it's legal doesn't make it right. that's the position of the fisherman we talked to today. they are hoping two lawsuits filed last year will help tip the scales. >> a group of blue whales was spotted a mile off the southern california coast today. each measuring 100 feet long and 180 metric tons. these whales were spotted about a mile off shore. came to this general spot every year to feed on krill. . the us open has a new

with us. widespread 60s around the bay. 63 san francisco. 68 san jose. 7 3 for livermore. upper 60s low 70s. mostly sunny skies. just a gorgeous day out there. take a look at what's happening here. thunder storms that have been firing off over southern lake tahoe and if i go north even a little scarier here. so much so that the national weather service has issued a flash flood watch through the evening hours. some slower thunder storms are moving so slow. they are receiving about an inch of rain per hour. meanwhile, here at home. that threat for the thunder storm is leaving us. we have high pressure building in over the next couple days. that is going to warm us up. tomorrow morning we are expected to follow up with the clouds once again.

maybe getting out the door, it's going to take about until 11:00 until it peels back off the east bay and could be hugging the coast for the afternoon. temperatures will be how we started early this morning. perhaps a little warmer in some areas. partly to mostly cloudy skies. 78, 83. upper 60s, low 70s near san francisco. 76 near fremont. 8 6 expected in livermore. 77 in redwood city. extended forecast here. warm is up just a little more for tomorrow and wednesday. thursday, friday, a little bit of a cool down and temperatures bump back up. >> thank you. finally, tonight a crowning achievement for san francisco golden gate park.
