hours but from facebooking to the masoninning center on knob hill where janna katsuyama is live just where he finished speaking. >> if you look over there people are still coming out of the auditorium. it was really packed tonight julie. a soldout fundraiser part rally and part rock and soul concert. president obama pulled up to a white tent in front of the auditorium just about 8:15 tonight. he then went inside to this packed crowd and took the stage. [ applause ] >> hello, san francisco. >> reporter: the president talked for about a half an hour saying his campaign is returning to its grassroots. outside of washington, d.c. invoking memory it is of his first run as an underdog. he listed some achievements that he felt they did over the passed years. higher investments in solar

green energy, healthcare. he mentioned appointments of two female supreme court justices. don't ask, don't temperature. and saying moving forward, there is a need to rollback tax cuts. >> i will not reduce our deficit by sacrificing the things that have always made america great. the things that have made americans prosper. [ applause ] >> i won't sacrifice our investments in education. i will not sacrifice those. [ applause ] >> i won't sacrifice our investments in science and basic research. i won't sacrifice our investment in clean energy at a time when our dependence on foreign oil is causing americans so much pain at the pumps. i will not sacrifice america's future. that i will not do. >> reporter: and president obama talked about moving forward and laying out his plans to continue for pushing for more investment in green technology, high speed rail, equality for all people. really things that touched the

people in this very liberal bastion here in san francisco. back here live you can see that people are still mingling out here. i got a chance to talk to some people as they were coming out. it was a mix. people very energized here tonight, but still some concerns about gay rights, about some of the other things that have not been addressed or resolved in his first term. one of the slogans "yes, we can" that we heard so much in the 2008 campaign another slogan came out tonight i'm in. and with so many people here from nancy pilosi to gavin newsom who supported hillary clinton the first time around he will need all of these people in his corner if he hopes to win this very next tough reelection battle. reporting live from knob hill in san francisco tonight, janna katsuyama, ktvu, channel 2 news. no more tax breaks for the rich. >> code pink was among the groups poet protesting outside the auditorium. each group wanted a special

message they wanted president obama to hear. some called for saving wild horses and others to save medicare. one young manmade a pitch for marriage equality. the president arrived at san francisco airport early this afternoon. mr. obama stepped off air force one at 1:09 p.m. he walked over to meet a selected few who were allowed out on the tarmac. then off to marine one for the short helicopter flight to facebook in palo alto. that only took about six minutes. the event at facebook was billed as a town hall and lasted about an hour. but as ktvu's ken prichett reports while the talk focused on the economy it also helped with the election campaign. >> reporter: mark zuckerburg appeared nervous taking the stage and he confirmed as much. >> i'm kind of nervous. we have the president of the united states here. >> the president entered to applause and quickly opened with a joke to start the hour-

long event. >> my name is barack obama and i'm got the guy who got mark to wear a jacket and tie. >> mr. obama took questions from the audience and from users watching the town hall streamed live on facebook. the president was focused on the economy and his plan to reduce the deficit by raising taxes on the wealthy. >> that allows people like me, and frankly you, mark, for paying a little more in taxes. [ laughter ] >> i'm cool with that. >> i know you're okay with that. >> as the president discussed the budget, energy, immigration and more, protestors on the left and right rallied outside facebook headquarters. the president's trip to the bay area is part fundraising and campaigning. one goal for mr. obama, rekindle the interest in the youth that helped put him into office. >> you've got to be involved, especially the young people here, your generation. if you don't give us a shove or give the system a push it's just not going to change. >> some in the youth full audience remember the campaign

in 2008 and the excitement they felt at the time. >> and then it kind of died down with all of the recession that we've had. so i was actually energized after watching the whole thing. >> president obama was certainly in friendly territory. he was introduced as one of the most popular people on facebook with 19 million likes. in palo alto, ktvu, channel 2 news. after facebook and before tonight's speech, the president attended a fundraising dinner in san francisco's pacific heights. the ceo of sales force.com hosted the event and only four invited guests. they paid $38,500 to attend dinner included. the president plans to spend the night in the city and attend one more event here. tomorrow morning, he is scheduled to appear at a breakfast fundraiser at san francisco's st. regis hotel. following that he leaves the bay area for reno and another town hall meeting. then he will travel to la for two more fundraisers. well, not everyone is excited to see the president in the bay

area. coming up at 10:30 while local republicans say they aren't buying what president obama is selling. and we have continuing coverage of the president's visit. we are posting updates at ktvu, channel 2 news ktvu.com and live coverage beginning at 4:30 a.m. in news alameda police are investigating the city's first homicide of the year. police say they received several calls just before noon about a disturbance in the 500 block of bueno vista avenue. when officers arrived they say they found a man dead from gunshot wounds. they detained a man at the scene. that man is being questioned about his possible involvement in the sleighing. fire investigators are trying to determine what caused a three alarm blaze that has claimed the a life of a 70-year- old woman. the fire burned in the 200 block of buena vista avenue at 3:30 this afternoon. a spokesman says the woman's body was found in a bottom floor unit, the same unit where

the fire appears to have started. two richmond police officers who were involved in an off-duty security scandal are indepartment. a source tells ktvu news officer ray thomas plans to resign next week. the department says officer danny harris left this week after learning he was about to be fired. the officers are accused of hiring members of the department's explorer youth program for their private security firm and arming them with illegally purchased guns. thomas denies any wrongdoing. a defense attorney says the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy in san francisco this month was an accident. andy zeng was a sophomore. he was killed on april 10th. his body was found in a home. today the defense attorney representing a 15-year-old boy charged with the murder said his client did not think the gun was loaded. he says the boys were friends. the accused teen made his second appearance in juvenile court today but has yet to

enter a plea. the mayor of san francisco is almost ready to name a new police chief. mayor ed lee said he will announce his choice for a permanent police chief in a week's time. the police commission submitted three names. ktvu has been told two are insiders. captain craig sur and commander dan mahoney. the third candidate is an unnamed individual from outside the department. oakland police say the arrest of a woman this afternoon serves as proof that prostitution is not always a victimless crime. the woman was arrested for soliciting a police officer during a sting operation. she told the officers that she had two infants, maybe a-month- old, in the backseat of a car parked nearby. officers said the car was filthy. >> i would hate to think of the possibilities that could have happened to those two little innocent babies that were sitting in the backseat had we not intervened. >> the police say the children will be turned over to child protective services. as for the woman, she was

charged with three felonies, for prostitution, soliciting and child end take danger endangerment. police say she has three other young children. they will inform her about the services available to her. >> we are also learning tonight that oakland police are questioning a man right now in connection with a series of sexual assaults. ktvu's amber lee is talking with her sources and is live now in the lake merit neighborhood where these attacks have taken place. amber? >> reporter: julie, the most recent attack took place in this area near the intersection of 3rd and international. tonight oakland police told us the man they are questioning matches a sketch on this flyer they have been handing out. police called the attack brazen. it was broad daylight. the attacker followed the woman as she walked home from the store yesterday. >> this gentleman has definitely been patient where he will hover around a location seeing who is who. and then pick his victim. >> reporter: police say the suspect is an african american

man with dreadlocks, 20 to 25- year-old. five feet nine to six feet tall. medium complex. investigators say this man may be responsible for at least four robberies and assaults dating back to last september. that's disturbing, obviously. a little unnerving to me just because i live nearby here. you know, i do walk a bit by myself. >> you always have to be cautious but that's my way of approaching safety. >> she lives on the street where yesterday's attack took place. >> even when coming in and out of my garage i look behind me and make sure no one is following me in. and i never night. >> he forced the victims into an alleyway to avoid being seen. >> trust yourself to know who is standing around the corner. a lot of times the victim has noticed the suspect or suspects being around. >> reporter: though the police have been questioning a man for these attacks, there has been no arrest yet. reporting live here in oakland, amber lee, ktvu, channel 2

. doubling sewer rates it's a proposal that brought plenty of people out in marin county to say no. deborah villalon is live where tonight's outcry caused the ross valley sanitation district to step back. deborah? >> reporter: well, ken, first customers got this glossy flyer touting the district's low rates. now they feel they have been set up for an increase. >> you know, i really feel like this was underhanded. >> reporter: ratepayers of the ross valley sanitation district wonder first why a big rate hike is being discussed in a small room with little public notice. >> i feel burned. i don't feel like my money is being well spent. i feel like my money is being spent to give me glossy mailers to tell me how great things are when actually they are not at all when you are about to do a

rate increase. >> reporter: customers to pay their annual sewer feet will shoot from $900 from $500. the smaller tax assessment could top $1100 a year. >> yet 32 employees, which appears to be about three times what any other district has. >> reporter: skeptics say ross valley doesn't need to hire 11 more employees recommended by staff to speed replacement of an old collapsing pipe system. >> it's going to be your disaster in 30 years when i'm long gone when the pipes fail. >> reporter: the district has a history of spills. most recently december with more than one million gallons of raw sewage into the creek and the local roads. critics also point to some $5 million paid in a settlement when this property the district sold turned out to be too contaminated to develop. >> i am really very interested to know why you need so much of our money? >> reporter: in the end, the board backed off on sending rate hike notices until it re examines the numbers.

>> we are still in a pretty good recession. people are hurting. and adding these kinds of costs right now i think is not -- is not the way to go. >> reporter: the idea has not been fleshed completely. they will pick it up again may 3rd in a larger room to hold more people. live deborah villalon, ktvu, channel 2 news. east bay mud is considering raising rates as well. it has $1.4 million customers in contra costa and alameda counties. it they could see the water rates go up 12% over the next two years. the district will hold a public hearing in june if they decide to pursue the rate hike. for two days in a row bomb threats have disrupted classes at a san jose high school. a telephoned threat today said a bomb would go off at branham high at lunchtime. school officials wanted to err on the side of caution so they cancelled classes and sent students home at 10:30 this morning. the san jose police made a sweep of the school property and found nothing out of the

ordinary. today is the anniversary of the columbine school killings. an update now to a story we have been following for you. ktvu news has learned that san jose will re-open butcher dog park tomorrow afternoon. it's been closed since the weekend after a dog playing in the park collapsed and died. poison was suspected. but an autopsy did not indicate any apparently signs of poison. the park will be power washed before it re-opens. at&t is increasing a reward after several new incidents of vandalism in contra costa county. at&t is 0 everything $25,000 up from $10,000 for the capture of those responsible. five telephone boxes were vandalized this morning in pittsburgh and hundreds of customers lost their phone service. oakland police made what some say was their recent marijuana bust in recent memory. around 4 a.m. a burglar alarm sounded in the 1500 block of foothill boulevard. when officers went inside they didn't find a burglar but they

did find 2300 marijuana plants. it seems the burglar was going after tools and copper wiring which were dropped in the trash can. police took the plants which they estimate are worth around $2 million. i don't there are new concerns tonight following san jose's decision last night to drastically reduce the number of pot clubs in the city from more than 100 to just 10. ktvu's robert handa tells us why some people think the new rules will invite more crime. >> so we have one. >> palm says she buys medical cannabis to help her recover from a stroke. >> it calms my nerves so i can accept the physical their. >> reporter: pam says she is alarmed san jose set a limit of ten pot clubs spread out over the city. >> it's very important for it to be close and nearby. people like me, they can't get around very easily. >> reporter: club owner dave hodges points out there are more than 100 clubs now so dropping to 10 and requiring clubs to grow their own pot

means small neighborhood shops will be replaced with tempting targets for criminals. >> very large mega-stores with very substantial grow facility attached, you are basically pointing a big red target on all of these locations. >> reporter: attorney david thompson founder of the cannabis healing association in santa cruz believes the san jose council members want the federal government to step in and close the clubs for them. ann thompson says san jose -- thompson says san jose can expect lawsuits from those left out. >> the first come first serve basis is the worst possible system to select you know who gets to keep their businesses and who gets squashed. >> reporter: thompson predicts many pot club owners won't wait until the end of the year to find out which ten businesses will get permits to sell. he says some owner also sue the city first. in san jose, robert hon can a robert handa, ktvu, channel 2 news. today is april 20th, otherwise known as 4/20 a day

that represents a marriage of pot and politics. so at 4:20 this afternoon, thousands of people got together at hippy hill in golden gate park to call for the legalization of marijuana for recreational use. and smoke a little pot while they were doing it. last year's effort to legalize recreational use in california fell short with 46% of the vote. people at today's event say they hope to see a similar proposition back on the ballot soon. am [ music ] a little bit of rain is falling out there now. light drizzle in parts of the bay area. danville, concord, clayton, east bay seeing most of the light sprinkles. here is how it goes tomorrow. the examine computer model starts us off tonight. widely scattered showers. a weak deal you already figured that out. it didn't wet the roads that badly. might be some wet for the morning commute. here we are at 3 a.m., some more moderate drizzle moves through the bay area at 3 a.m. just in time for the early

morning commute southern peninsula in san jose you are getting some monitors. the roadways will remain wet in the north bay. wet on the morning roads. afternoon clearing. thursday looks like a pretty good day. when i come back the long range computer model looks into the holiday weekend. conservationists are suing the federal government saying it failed to meet an important deadline designed to protect the leatherback see turtles. the group filed their suit this week. it says the government failed to finalize a protection zone for the endangered turtles off the pacific coast. the groups claim the feds had agreed to designate a 70,000 square mile safety zone for the turtles but ignored a deadline to do so. a fatal boat accident in san francisco bay. two people stranded in the chilly waters. but it wasn't the coastguard that came to the rescue. also, ipho

. there was an unusual rescue today on san francisco bay when boaters found themselves in trouble they sent out a distress call. as ktvu mike mibach reports it wasn't the coastguard that responded. rather, it was inmates from san quentin prison. >> reporter: the chilly waters of the san francisco bay neither shores of san quentin. >> in between 1 and 1:15 we got a call. >> reporter: a guard in tower three hears a scream for help. a 14-foot motor boat had capsized and two people were floating in the water. the first firefighters on scene ten of them all from san quentin state prison all reside in that firehouse over there. dressed in turnouts and ready for a rescue. san quentin inmate shawn tiger rolls in engine 23 with his fellow firefighters. >> we found that there were two people in the water. one conscience and one unconscious. i took my turnouts off and went over the wall and repelled into the bay. >> reporter: inmate derek said he helped wrap the rope around

the boaters. they pulled the two people up 15 feet up over the wall and out of the water first the unconscious male. >> there was no fear or hesitation. it was just a guy needed hem. >> reporter: the county sheriff's office said the man identified it died in the hospital. the unidentified woman in her 40s was also treated and released. >> just proud to be a part of it in assisting a life. >> they are non-violent offenders who live on prison grounds and respond to medical calls in the ground and in the cells and in the bay. >> it's an opportunity for us out here to show that although we made a mistake and we have some debt to society, we're still human, and we care for people and we want to help people. >> reporter: at san quentin, mike mibach, ktvu, channel 2 news. the san francisco emergency services department is facing questions tonight after word got out that it lost its internet connection on new year's eve and couldn't reboot for hours because no one knew

the password. >> i think san francisco's information technology is stuck in 1999. we did hear that the alternative was pencil and paper. i think that's not how people communicate these days. >> the director of emergency services says the new year's eve incident is being blown out of proportion and the emergency services was able to respond to all calls that night, including an apartment fire that left 50 people homeless. dms is preparing a report on how often the system has lost internet service and how it plans to prevent another similar incident. two technology researchers say they have discovered a secret tracking people in apple iphones. it tracks the user's locations in insecured files and there is no way to remove the data. the tracking feature is also on 3g enabled ipads. the researchers said they asked apple to explain but have not received a response. positive earnings reports from silicone valley tech companies helped push the markets up today. intel reported that sales increased 25 percent during the

last quarter to 12.8 billion dollars. servers produced by the santa based company are used for many online services. shares rose about 8% today. yahoo shares finished the day up at 4.5% after the company posted better than expected earnings. the company said they earned $223 million during the last quarter. that's less than this time last year, but analysts say they believe the company is heading in the right direction. and stocks surged today following the positive news from the technology sector. dow jones gained 186 points. the nasdaq closed 57 points higher. bart ridership increased last month as gas prices took off. ktvu news dug into bart's ridership data and noticed that ridership grew by 14,000 in march when compared to the previous year. commuters logged 343,000 trips last month for a 4% increase. . just about an hour ago president obama wrapped up a speech in san francisco. it was the cap on a busy day that included a town hall at facebook and palo alto and a private dinner in san francisco. during his facebook appearance, president obama criticized republican plans for the economy. and tonight some tough republicans in california are firing back. ktvu's eric rasmussen is live where he fund republicans are skeptical about the president's plans. eric? >> reporter: ken, they say all

you have to do is take one look at the gas prices. if they remain high and the economy continues to struggle, the gop, even in some strong holds here in parts of the bay area, think they could count a serious challenge to the president next year. [ applause ] >> reporter: while president obama faced a friendly crowd at facebook in palo alto and blasted the gop budget not everyone in the bay area was buying in. >> i voted for him, as i said earlier, very enthusiastically. and he is just another run-of- the-mill politician that just wants to get re-elected. >> look, he's out there trying to get his job back. well, hell, a lot of americans don't have their jobs at all. >> reporter: from his home california republican party chairman called the president's visit an early campaign stop. >> isn't this something that every sitting president would do as they try to get re- elected? >> yes, look, politicians fight for their jobs. i get that. but he has to show, i think in the long run, a greater concern

for american's jobs. >> reporter: the president and republicans are at odds over government cuts and raising taxes. and some, including him backed at mr. obama's call for shared responsibility. >> when is government going to take its share of the blame for growing too much and wasting too much money? so shared responsibility that's code for we are not going to cut back on government. >> reporter: but some we talked to told us the economy, not campaigning, could most impact who gets their shop. >> being a business owner, i don't think we've gotten a lot of help. >> reporter: he tells me that california republicans have also launched their own 20 city tour to talk directly to voters. he plans to be in southern california tomorrow. live eric rasmussen, ktvu, channel 2 news. jurors in the murder trial of journalist chauncy bailey saw secretly recorded police video today. the video was taken in august 2007 inside the police department just four days after bailey's murder.

it shows yousef bay the 4th and two other muslim bakery members talking about the shooting. bay imitate's him being shot three times. bay is on the right. >> and pow pow pow boom boom. >> and what are we supposed to say happened? >> bay is accused of ordering the killings of bailey and two other men in the summer of 2007. defense say they knew he was being recorded and wasn't being truthful. >> activists fighting child prostitution marched in east oakland today with a message for the young girls and their pimps. activists say they are finally getting results against child sexual exploitation. they are seeing more convictions for kidnap and rape. the last three jury trials ended with life sentences. in addition activists are trying to get the young prostitutes off the streets and into new lives.

vandalling in san francisco chose a unique way to mark the first anniversary of the gulf oil spill. you are looking at, about to see, surveillance video taken at 5:36 this morning from the shell station on brian street where three people chained gas hoses together. the masked and hooded men left anti-oil leaflets. a clerk told ktvu news that the vandalism did not prevent them from selling gas. two other gas stations were hit. none of those gas stations sell bp gas. and this morning in san francisco a group of bicyclists bared all as they marked the anniversary of the spill. the naked riders say their unusual brand of protest is designed to draw attention to what they call a globally unsustainable energy policy. plus they say in case you haven't done it it is just fun to ride a bike naked. >> one year ago the deep water horizon exploded and sank into the gulf of mexico sparking one of the largest disasters in u.s. history. now, even though much of the oil appears to be gone, ktvu's

john fowler shows us how the people in the gulf area are still very much affected. >> reporter: 11 workers dead, 87 days of gushing oil, more than 200 million-gallons, 20 times exxon valdez today the beaches look clean but they still find sea turtles dead in disturbing numbers. >> it is ten to 15 fold increase which is significant. >> reporter: crews still work marshing fouled by oil. >> this is still about an ecosystem. >> reporter: and fishermen still suffer. >> i can't catch crab. there is none out here. where they won't we don't know. record shrimping off 80%. >> they took away you know everything i worked for and everything i love to do. it's a culture down here. >> reporter: bp has paid $4 billion in claims. >> so i think in terms of speed and generosity we are doing it right. >> reporter: greed and questionable made a few

insiders profiteers so-called spillmillionaires. some are still waiting for checks. >> i don't believe anything they tell us anymore. >> reporter: last month they created an industry safety industry. government regulators are now more independent and tougher but congress has passed no stricter rules on offshore oil drilling. as we first told you last year, they now test gulf seafood for safety. bay area restaurants and fish marketers today told me the big change from last year are higher prices. health and science editor john fowler, ktvu, channel 2 news. bp wants the maker of the rigs failed blow-out preventor to pay for some or all of the cleanup costs. the company filed a suit today in federal court in new orleans against cameron international. bp alleges the device had a faulty design and caused an unreasonable amount of risk. bp is also suing the company that operated the deepwater horizon, alleging it failed to properly operate the rig. you will see some big

changes if you plan on flying this summer. the faa announced new protections for airline passengers today. just like domestic carriers, foreign airlines will not be allowed to keep passengers on the tarmac for more than four hours. and there will be better compensation for passengers who are bumped from flights. napa passenger rights add joe indicate hanny started pushing for changes when her family endured a long delay. >> they are telling the airlines they have to fully explain at the gate what the possible compensation is in cash. >> bumped passengers could get as much as $1300. the rules are scheduled to take effect in august. the united states will have a new terror alert system in place next week. it will replace the much criticized as five color system. in new york city today the head of homeland security janet napolitano announced new alerts. one warns of a terrorist threat and the other an i am meant threat. it will be sent out through traditional media as well as

. it was just like a hurricane. >> racing against the flames in texas, more evacuations today in the small town of palo pinto. fire officials say since the fire started a week ago 160 homes have gone up in flames. there was some respite for firefighters today as federal reinforcements along with cooler weather and calmer winds aided the fire firefighting

efforts. >> more help is going to the efforts in libya. they are sending advisors to train the rebels joining the french officers already there. rebels battling the forces of moammar gadhafi released video where the fighting has intensified. one rebel said the firing is continuous and only stops when the government forces reload. france said it would step up the air strikes. photojournalist tim heatherrington and tomrose was killed. he was hit by a rocket propelled grenade. he was nominated for an oscar for co-directing the film restrepo. he named it for a soldier who was killed early in the fighting. in other news of the world tonight in nigeria some 48,000 people have left a northern city after post-election

rioting. the violence erupted after good luck jonathan won reelection. mr. jonathan is from the predominantly christian south. and mainly in the mostly muslim north were angry about the results. the international observers say the election was reasonably free and fair. in turkey, occurred issue protestor kurdish protestors fought with the riot police. they are angry that they barred some candidates from the upcoming elections. the election board would review the appeals tomorrow. for decades they fought for autonomy from the turkish government. in beijing ten american senators, democrats and republicans invited with chinese leaders today. this was the largest and most senior delegation of senators ever, including california senator barbara boxer. the three-day trip coincides with a major crackdown on dissidents that analysts say reflects the concern about a

only on 2, ktvu tells us why it took so long. >> i've never seen them but i would assume they will hold like this and spray like this as they walk. >> reporter: that's how this giant graffiti tag on 280 was created. senior officials estimate it has been here for eight months. >> it looks really bad tagging across the entire bridge. we were getting calls from citizens for months. >> but it took months for the city to coordinate cleanup efforts because the bridge is caltran property. the highway patrol and caltrans were needed to close the freeway exit ramp to bird avenue. today and tomorrow between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. drivers to use a detour so towers can scale across the bridge and paint. a place where graffiti has doubled in the last few months. >> an uptick on these bridges knowing that the coordination efforts are extremely expensive and take lot of time to put

there has been a light drizzle falling throughout the bay area since about 3:00 this afternoon. live stormtracker 2 shows the widespread areas of very light rainfall. into the north bay drizzle and late rain up in san jose. you see some showers and light sprinkles out here antioch as well. as we look at the computer we are basically looking at a night that will be filled with showers, scattered showers into the morning. thursday it looks like it will be an okay day. the showers are a little ahead of schedule. that means they are going to end most likely by 6 or 7:00 tomorrow morning. the weekend right now is still slightly unsettled but the models are backing off on that rain as well. you are seeing all of the rain to the north of us. tomorrow, light a.m. showers for the morning commute. not a big deal in terms of getting to work. but it will be a little glaze on the road. partly cloudy. your thursday will be a pretty nice day. into the mid-60s, upper 60s.
