good evening everyone i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. the shooting happened today as church leaders prepared to announce a new effort to prevent street violence. >> reporter: church leaders tell us the man was inside this building behind men attending a class when his relevant phone started ringing -- when his cell phone started ringing. sources tell us the shooting victim was releaseed from prison about a month ago. church leaders say he was trying to earn his ged to turn his life around only to take his life taken. >> he was on church ground, which is as holy ground. people desecrated our church grounds. >> reporter: church leaders

leaders told us the shooting disrespects life and the work the church does. seeing the man's lifeless body next to the cross reiterated the work they do is needed. tomorrow the church plans to announce that it has received a private grant for half a million dollars to grant programs designed to combat violence. >> in the middle of all of this bloodshed, we are convinced that life can grow. >> reporter: church leaders told us they are heartbroken over the death of this man they were trying to helpful but they say the incident reaffirms

to determine if seven men will stand trial for last year's notorius gang rape at houston high school. police pointed a horrifying picture of what they saw and the harsh words they say one defendant uttered. rita williams reports. >> reporter: under heavy guard and in shackles the seven defendants charged in the alleged gang rape walked to and from the jail. the defendant listened to two more richmond police officer describe what the officered saw happened face down, slung over a picnic table. officer gary lewis testified that when arrested near the scene, ortega was combative and drunk that he said he and the

we have developing news right now in the east bay. fire officials tell us one person is dead and six others injures after a minivan crushed into the back of a truck. the highway patrol says there were seven people in the van, one person was declared dead at the scene. three were declared trauma cases and rushed to highland hospital in oakland. the exat the extent of the injuries to the three remains passengers is still unclear.

people acting in community together sponsored a forum. nay tried to raise awareness about bullying and encouraged school districts to be more proactive in stopping bullying. >> reporter: national statistics were sited today indicating 1,600 students miss school every day because of the fear of being bullying. some victims of bullying came forward with their stories. >> i had things thrown at me in the hall ways as i walked down. they were shouting names at me. >> reporter: ashley garn ico was one of several that spoke out. she says the bully was so bad she dropped out of high school and nobody listened to her. >> everybody was like, it's just gossip, it's just drama and just go on with class.

>> reporter: her parents say they never knew their daughter was getting cyber bullying. >> saying that she was a lesbian, that she was gay, that she was bisexual. that she was pregnant, and that she had aids and was spreading it. >> reporter: and bronel says two years ago the constant bullying drove her daughter to the brink. >> she used her sweatshirt to hang herself from the stall in the women's bathroom. >> reporter: a friend found ama tka and her life was saved but she suffered brain damage, can't talk, is wheelchair bound and lives in a nursing home. i asked her mother to say something to bullies. >> bullying is not something we can take lightly anymore. because of what happened to my daughter, i know help families deal with it. and we're very lucky i still have amanda.

but there's a lot of parents out there that don't have their kids any longer because they were bullied. and they took their life. >> reporter: and vornel has formed a group called amanda's network. it works to stop bullying, and lets victims know they are not alone, there is someone out there they can reach out to. lloyd lacuesta. about 100 mental health workers called on the state today to beef up safety at napa valley hospital. 54-year-old donna groves was found strangled on the hospital ground late last month. a patient who was declare insane in the 90s was responsible. vacaville police says the one of the most violent crimes

they've seen in years. tonight an 18-year-old is in custody suspected of killing a the face. police say the suspect richard ruben hawkins went to the apartment in williams street, shot and killed two men and wounded a woman. the two men were 20 and 21 years old. no names have been released. after the shooting, hawkins walked to the police station with a gun in his hand where he started breaking windows. >> he was not combative. he refused to show the officers his hands. we did use a device to subdue him and he was taken to the hospital. >> police say they had contact with hawkins before but did not elaborate. passengers can't use

for the first time we have a picture tonight of an elderly man who was out for a walk when a hit and run driver fatality struck him. the man's family made an emotional plea for that driver to come forward. ktvu's maureen naylor reports. >> reporter: freemont police today released this photo of 83- year-old nosrad. the grandfather was in the crosswalk when the car struck him on the morning of november 5th. this photo of the scene shows his personal items on the scene including his walker. a witness saw the driver pull over shortly before taking off. >> my father loved walking. he walked several miles a day. >> reporter: he was taken to eden medical center where he died that evening. on a news conference, the family made an emotional plea

in washington, fellow lawmakers convicted long time new york congressman charles rangel of ethics violation. rangel himself was conspicuous by his actions. the council found him guilty in 11 of 14 allegations. rangel said he was treated unfairly by what he calls good faith mistakes. today the congressional black caucus expressed speculation ahead of the caucus. the group wants to know what kind of power cliburn would wield. president obama today awarded the nation's highest military honor the medal of

only violates privacy rights but also patient and parental rights. ktvu's health and science editor john fowler has tonight's special report. >> reporter: what's all the fuss about? a few drops of baby's blood dabbed on a card. it's mandatory newborn screening for 77 serious genetic diseases. >> left untreated can lead to early death or severe impairment of quality of life . this is really important because it allows us to make a diagnosis early. >> reporter: the program is truly life saving. but that card with genetic material is state property and saverred. parents said they have no idea the state government keeps sample of their kids' dna and shares it without anyone's consent. >> i wasn't notified of this.

i think other parents if they were notified about it would be just as outraged. >> i don't trust the government any way. so i don't trust that they honest and tell the truth. >> this is a privacy right, it's a dna property right, it's a patient right, it's a parent right. all of these rights are being violated when these are not taken without the consent of the parent. >> reporter: after initial screening at private and state laboratories such as this one in richmond the cards are given a number and stored in this refrigerated warehouse. the state of california keeps 50 many million of these cards. they keep them indefinitely going back 30 years.

another shot at the suv. police say they later arrested elmer stewart. that arrest happened yesterday. state occupational safety started an investigation into yesterday's fatal accident involving a woodchipper. the contra costa coroners office identified the victim as antonio barrajas. police say that barrajas got tangled in a line that became caught in the woodchipper and suffered a fatal head injury. in haiti, the company's president today called for calm following a second day of violent protesting against united nations peace keepers. many haitians believe the base for the peace keepers is the source of the contamination. today for the first time the disease was found in a neighboring dominican republican in a man that had returned from vacation in

fault. and i'm tracking a weather system, a cold weather system that's going to change everything around. it was warm the last couple of days, we had record heat yesterday. up here in the gulf of alaska is this weather system that will migrate and workovend and bang it's going to feel like winter as we head toward your bay area weekend. look at the drop off in temperature, we're expecting a cooldown, it's cooled off a little bit today. about 5 degrees, it's going to cool off a few degrees tomorrow and then the bottom comes out friday and into the weekend. with temperatures in the daytime highs just in the low 50s. daytime highs just in the low 50s. big changes, cooler weather in the forecast. not for tomorrow, or not much cooler. slightly cooler tomorrow with 70s and lots of 60s. lots of upper 60s. nice day tomorrow then gradually everything erodes. here's the system i'm tracking.
