. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. new developments tonight in the trevor surrounding some pictures reportedly taken by a comic photographer ansel adams. good evening i'm maureen naylor. heather holmes is often tonight. >> and i'm ken wayne. >> ever since a fresno man claimed he bought some rare ansel adams photographs for just $40 there has been controversy. experts say those pictures were not taken by adams but probably by the uncle of an oakland woman. tonight we're learning more

about the background of the art dealer who made the claim that those pictures are worth a lot. patty lee. >> reporter: that expert who claimed to have 25 years of experience apraysing fine arts turned out to be a convicted fell on who is latest is his credentials. >> mayor january is the oakland woman who helped prove a box of negatives which were contributed by ansel adams were probably shot by her uncle early. she learned that david streets, so-called expert who valued those negatives at $200 million has almost no experience in fine arts and a criminal record for passing bad checks, theft and fraud in two states. >> conmen can be very slick. that's almost the definition of it, you know. >> reporter: william turnbridge of the ansel adams trust says

fight the revelations he still plans to sell prints of the negatives for thousands of dollars. >> they have invested a lot of money in this whole scam. and they don't want to give up. >> reporter: on his website streets explains his past is ancient history and has no bearing on the parenthesis. but the hit to his credibility could affect the fresno painter who bought the negatives at a yard sale years ago and has been working with a lawyer ever since to prove they are the work of an american icon. >> the family should sue him and say, you can't do this. it's moot my business to do that, is it? >> wallet ton says she is worried somebody is going to by her uncle earl's photographs thinking they are ansell adams. the lawyer are trying to contact her but she has nothing to say to them. in the meantime trustees of the ansel adams estate tell us there is a planning in motion and to expect more twist inside this story next week. reporting live in oakland, patty lee, ktvu, channel 2

news. concord police have arrested a man they suspect planted pipe bombs at a community park. 21-year-old temp think davis wilson was arrested last night at his home in concord. police say an informant led to the arrest. three pipe bombs were discovered in the park last month. the bomb squad safely detonated all of them. police searched wilson's home today and say they discovered bomb-making materials as well as drugs. the postal service's mail delivery will continue tomorrow despite a devastating fire that destroyed a post office yesterday. tonight the question remains, what caused the fire? ktvu's john sasaki has what clues investigators are looking into. >> reporter: heelsburg is a peaceful city of 11,000 people where residents admit not much happens. but today this is the talk of the town. the downtown post office burned up yesterday evening. a spectacular fire that started in the front of the building and brought 60 plus

firefighters rushing in from surrounding communities. >> after a couple of hours it went to a fourth alarm. they were unsuccessful and contained the fire to that area. it then spread throughout the entire rooftop. >> reporter: now what remains is a shell of a building. >> this is kind of the heart of heelsburg. >> all day residents stopped and stared, many concerned about their mail. >> if my letter was there and i did lose it, i will have to be making several phone calls and asking people to be understanding. >> reporter: the renters of the more than 1700 post office boxes here may have reason for concern but most people who dropped off mail yesterday do not. >> i was here until 3:30 in the afternoon. and myself and the clerk that was working with me pulled all of the collection mail up until 3:30 in the afternoon. i took it over to the other office and dispatched it to the plant. >> long-time residents say this former safeway store has been far more than just a place to drop off mail and buy stamps. >> this is heartbreaking because it was never the most

attractive building but the center of town. you ran into everybody at the post office. >> you know they were talking about tearing it down not very long ago. people's will prevailed. it brings everybody downtown. you saw everyone you knew. it helped the local shopping. it's a shame to lose it. >> reporter: now it's closed maybe for good. that's bad news for the notary and bookkeeping office is across the street. >> often times people would come across for a notary and i am going to miss that. >> reporter: the residents need not worry about service interruptions but it will continue out of the city's other post office. there is no indication that this fire was the product of arson. as for one possible cause one investigator told me this is an old building with old wiring. if i'm john sasaki ktvu, channel 2 news. the task force is trying to determine who was responsible for an overnight shooting in the mission district. three people were wounded one

man critically. the men were standing at 17th and mission streets just before midnight when a gunman opened fire on them and fled on foot. no arrests had been made. police believe the shooting was gang related. the san francisco medical examiner has identified the bicyclist killed this weekend by a hit and run driver. the crash happened at mass onic and turk just after 10:30 thursday night. both the car and the bicyclist were heading north on massonic. a german tourist died at the hospital. police have arrested the 38- year-old man driving the car but have not yet released his name. he is charged with vehicular manslaughter. an east bay man is said to appear in court tomorrow to be arraigned on murder charges in connection with the shooting death of a pittsburgh man. 30-year-old rubio is accused of killing 35-year-old hector sanchez last wednesday inside rubio's home in the community of bay point. rubio led police and highway patrol officers on a freeway chase before he surrendered.

investigators say the shooting resulted from an ongoing dispute between the two men. boston authorities say the so-called craigslist killer accused of killing a woman after answering her craigslist add ad has committed as suicide. a spokesman for the sheriff's office said phillip markoff was found this morning in his jail cell. the official cause of death has not yet been released but jail officials say he was found alone in the cell and there is evidence he took his own life. the 23-year-old boston university medical student was accused of robbing and assaulting two women who placed ads for massage services on craigslist. one of them 26-year-old was killed. >> handful of demonstrators showed up in east bay to support mehserle. a dozen people gathered in front of dublin city hall. in spite of his manslaughter conviction, the protestors say his shooting of oscar grant was an accident. the public often ignores that police officers risk their lives in the line of duty.

woman. speakers condemned jack walker's ruling here which overturned proposition 8. they promise to work for a constitutional amendment if the supreme court up holds gay marriage. if the theth circuit court does not intervene same sex couples could get married here in california as soon as wednesday. for all of the latest news go to ktvu.com. >> the highway patrol and bureau of land management are investigating a crash at an off- road race that killed eight people in the mojave desert. one of the vehicles slammed into the onlookers leaving about a dozen more victims injured. godwin has the latest. >> i want them to remember there is good people in the world. all we hear in the news is bad and all of that. he was one of the good guys. he was just one of the good guys. >> reporter: people leaving in this neighborhood is shocked after one of their own is killed while watching an off- road race saturday. >> he was a good guy in the wrong place this time.

like looking at the thing. a truck had come over. and when it came up, it like caught air and got sideways. i seen people start scrambling at that point. as soon as it hit, it rolled right on top and it just hit people and people flew. it went like all kinds of directions. people were scattering and running trying to help people. >> the driver of the truck has been identified as brett floppy. according to the highway patrol he was forced to run from the scene when the crowd began throwing rocks at him. but wilson's family and friends don't blame him and carty says safety wasn't a factor. >> things happen. you can't stop that. you know, if it is going to happen, it is going to happen. >> that was godwin reporting. the highway patrol says alcohol was not a factor in the crash and there are no plans to arrest the driver. actress gabor asked that a priest read her the last riots following her second hospitalization in less than a month. she was admitted to ucla to

treat two blood clots only two days after going home. hospitalized since breaking her hip on july 17th when she fell out of bed. she underwent hip replacement injury but suffered a series of setbacks. she has been a fixture in hollywood for six decades and appeared in more than 30 movies. . summer vacation ends tomorrow for some bay area school districts. at one san jose elementary school, students heading back to school are returning to a dramatically different campus than the one they left all because of a suspected arsonist. >> reporter: workers spruced up the temporary grounds of trace elementary school today getting ready for students tomorrow following the fire that burned down the school july 5th. investigators are convinced it was a case of arson but they have made no arrests. today thanks to the community and businesses, teachers are ready to welcome students. >> excited and anxious, you know. >> bridge et cetera smith hung name tags by the front door of

her portable classroom for each of the 30 first grade students who walk in tomorrow. it contrasts with the loss teachers suffered in the fire just six weeks ago. >> everything. everything. every single thing i collected for 17 years. >> i was devastated. i mean, a lot of the stuff that i lost could be replaced but there are also some sentimental things. >> reporter: chelsea is filling up the white board of her portable room with instructions for her third graders tomorrow. she and all 24 students burned out of their classrooms received 1,000 each from inn tell. >> the outpouring from the community and the support from the staff and administration has been great. >> even though this has just been a horrible situation, the community has, the spirit of the community has been just amazing. not just within the boundary areas of trace but i can tell you across the nation. >> reporter: parents interest trying to raise more money. today they hung this sign on the school fence urging people to vote for trace elementary on

facebook. they can win half a million dollars in a contest sponsored by cole's department store. >> to support the arts program. again to support our teachers. and to provide, you know, possibly a better fire protection. >> reporter: some parents are trying to convince the school district to rebuild trace with sprinklers and a fully automated fire alarm, something that a loophole in the law currently allows districts to avoid. the plans have not been drawn up and the school will not be complete for a couple of years. in san jose, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> the $26 billion jobs bill signed by president obama last week is expected to prove to bring more than $1 billion to california schools. but without a state budget, school districts may not be able to decide how to use the money. the money could save some 14,000 teaching jobs in california. some educators say they fear the state will use the federal money to replace state funds rather than boost school spending. it was the final day of the

third annual outside lands music festival in san francisco's golden gate park. [ music ] >> the two day event wrapped up this evening and features some well known music names, including kings of leon. the festival benefits the san francisco recreation and park department. there were some changes this year, including shortening the festival from three days to two. even so, fans say they weren't disappointed. >> music is powerful, you know. it speaks to thousands and thousands of people every day. you know, everyone is coming together because of music and they want to be a part of it and they are curious about it. >> about 80,000 people attended the concert over the weekend. roughly 100,000 have attended in years past. >> the cities of san mateo are getting ready to explore merging their police departments. the burlingham city council is expected tomorrow night to approve footing half the bill for an $88,000 feasibility

study. if that happens san mateo is expected to approve the other half of the money. both cities are looking for ways to save money in these tough economic times. >> in the gulf of mexico louisiana shrimpers are preparing for a new season amid a sea of uncertainty. the shrimp season begins tomorrow. officials have declared gulf seafood safe for consumption. the prices are low and some fishermen still aren't sure the areas opened are free from contamination from the bp oil spill. officials with the louisiana ocean and marketing board trolled several areas on friday and said they didn't find any signs of oil. president obama and the first family spent part of their weekend along the gulf coast. the president's fifth visit since the massive oil spill. he promised not to turn his back on the struggling region. mike emanual has the details on the short but symbolic trip. >> reporter: president obama wrapped up his fifth visit to the gulf since the spill and promised to restore the economy and the environment. the president, first lady and

daughter sasha went for a boat ride in the bay for 40 minutes today. greeted by a pour possess, an image people across the gulf coast hope will encourage americans to book their next vacation in a beach community like panama city beach. the local chamber of commerce says businesses here lost an entire tourism season which drives the local economy. officials here say the presidential visit was great. they wish it was longer than 27 hours but they appreciate the obama's coming here. an image that thrilled many along the gulf coast seeing the president and his daughter having fun in the water. small business owners recognize the picture has been on television in many newspapers and on the internet showing a good time in the emerald green surf. before leaving mr. obama made a pledge that he won't turn his back on this region. >> my job is to make sure that we live up to this responsibility and that we keep up our efforts until the environment is clean. polluters are held accountable. businesses and communities are made whole. and the people of the gulf coast are back on their feet.

>> reporter: a big part of getting back on their feet is making sure tourists return to the beaches, hotels and restaurants here along the gulf. travelling with the president in panama city beach, florida, mike emanual fox news. new figures show hundreds of soldiers with post traumatic stress disorder may have been misdiagnosed. the army discharged 1,000 soldiers each year between 2005 and 2007 for having personality disorders. but after an article in the nation magazine exposed the practice the defense department changed its policy. it began requiring a top-level review of each case to ensure ptsd or brain injury wasn't the underlying cause. after the change, the annual number of personality disorder cases dropped by 75%. and in contrast the number of ptsd cases doubled in just two years. the commander of u.s. forces in afghanistan speaks out on the likelihood u.s. troops will withdraw next year. will it happen on time?

. we have some developing news tonight in oakland where two teenage boys were reportedly shot at an east oakland practice park. park. it happened around 9:00 at a recreation center. the victims are said to be 15 and 17 years old. both boys take too highland hospital. one is said to be in critical condition. not clear what led up to the shooting. the commander of u.s. forces in afghanistan warned today that a scheduled withdrawal of troops there next july may not happen on time.

general david patrais said he would advice the withdrawal if necessary and his advice will be based on conditions inside afghanistan. >> it's not about us winning hearts and minds. it's about the afghan government winning hearts and mind. this isn't to say that there is any kind of objective of turning afghanistan into switzerland in 3-5 years or less. afghan good enough is good enough. >> the taliban still control large parts of southern afghanistan. mr. obama has ordered an official review of the war in december. after which the white house is going to form plans for a withdrawal strategy. >> in other world of the news today in iraq scattered attacks killed at least 14 people and wounded 30 others. most of the attacks targeted iraqi police. off the coast of iraq the u.s. navy said two gunmen recently robbed them of four commercial ships anchored another the hub. iraqi authorities have the two men in custody. in mexico today something exploded outside a television

station belonging to mexico's largest t.v. network. the northern city. the early morning attack followed another explosion outside the affiliate a few hours earlier. no one was injured. the explosions are thought to be the work of a drug cartel. >> and in russia today, poisonous smog moved back to moscow. weather experts said carbon monoxide readings were more than five times the normal today. 16 fires were burning around moscow blanketing the area with smoke. the pollution is being blamed for doubling the number of deaths in that city and grounding planes at the city's main airport. >> members of the tea party and other groups came together today another the u.s. mexico border in arizona to show their support for arizona's immigration enforcement law. mayor cope county joel attended the rally. he told the large crowd the mexican government should welcome the border help the

. authorities in marin county want to know who took a chainsaw to a half a dozen trees along the beach front without a permit. the move has sparked outrage among some residents. >> reporter: evidence of the illegal cutting on the hillside is easy to spot. rangers say monday night while they were busy on a project someone with a chainsaw hacked the top of one of the trees off and cut the limbs back on a half dozen more. branches still litter the ground. sections of trunk were left where they fell and rangers say the holes left in the trees

were from the special spiked footwear left to climb them could end up killing at least one more trees. long time residents are among those complaining. >> my father used to come out here and fish on that point right out there. and at that time there was -- it was just beach. and then they gradually fixed it up over the years. >> reporter: deal moley says word of the illegal cutting operation has spread throughout the county and it seems most people are condemning it. >> i picked up the paper and read about them cutting some trees. and i couldn't believe that anybody would do that. because it took so long to make it the beautiful place that it is. >> reporter: residents can apply for short-term use permits to cut back vegetation obstructing their view. rangers say the illegal cutting operation opened up the view for one house in particular. now sheriff's deputies are investigating and park users today say they would like to see whoever is responsible brought to justice.

(phone ringing). >> reporter: we rang the call box of the home that would most benefit from the illegal clearing and received no response. cutting trees on county land is a misdemeanor and the county can assess a fine of up to three times the value of the trees that were affected. and we're hearing that the homeowner's association here has launched an investigation as well. christian kafton. ktvu, channel 2 news. a new report says the wind power industry is growing rapidly in the u.s., creating jobs that can't be easily outsourced overseas. the lawrence livermoore berkeley lab report on wind industry finds the amount of wind power generated in the u.s. increased by a factor of five between 2004 and 2009. the number of wind turbine manufacturers grew from 5-16 in that time.

industry analysts say many of those jobs will remain in the u.s. due to the high cost of transporting the massive wind turbines overseas. summer gas prices have risen to their highest level since the end of april. in oakland, aaa reports the price of a gallon of regular rose 4.5 to 3.20. prices are more than 8% above the five year average for this time of year. >> oakland police dealt with two separate shootings overnight. shots rang out just after 3:20 this morning on 10th and alice streets in the city's chinatown. a man took himself to the hospital and refused to cooperate with investigators. police arrested another man and confiscated three guns. one gun was found on the suspect, another abandoned in the street and a third found in a related search of a home.

the other shooting happened in oakland's fruitvale district around 8:30 last night. one man seriously injured and two others wounded. police questioned six suspects another the intersection of crosby avenue and foothill boulevard but have made no arrests. the shooting victim was taken too highland hospital where he was last reported to be in stable condition. there is no word on what prompted either of the shootings. police in buffalo, new york today announced they arrested the wrong man as the prime suspect in a shooting this weekend that left four people dead. the shooting happened around 2:30 saturday morning after a fight inside a restaurant and bar. eight people were shot. four fatally. police arrested 25-year-old keith johnson. but today they said they made a mistake. >> we did have identification. we had other witness statements saying that it was keith who just got paroled. and then we also obtained blood evidence. to say the least, the then defendant was less than truthful about what was -- what

took place. >> johnson's mother says her son is still in custody because being at the bar violated the terms of his parole. there is no word on any new suspects in the case. a new study indicates teenage sex may not always lead to poor school performance. researchers found teens in a committed relationship do about the same in school as students who don't have sex. the same is not true for teenagers who have casual relationships. the study found those students get lower grades and have more school-related problems compared to whose who abstain. the findings were presented at the meetings of the sociological association in atlanta. end of world war ii was ended not with a memorial but with a kiss. [ music ] well, a little bit of a bump in the bay area temperatures for today. nothing major. but the warmest locations back up into the lower 80s. the warming trend will continue at least in the short term. right now on the maps though i can show you on live storm tracker two still talking about fog at this 10:00 hour. already an increase. closing in on daly city. and south san francisco.

sfo reporting mostly cloudy skies. the cloud deck will continue to be on the increase over the next 4-8 hours pushing out over the bay. as far as highs across the bay area see the range from 59 in pacifica. 67 in oakland. warmest locations inland 80s returning for livermore and antioch at 826 degrees. the scene looking out across the bay towards san francisco that fog deck on the increase. the weather story for you is this, fog increases overnight. temperatures tomorrow on average about 2-6 degrees warmer than today's highs. the extended forecast is another cooling trend approaching the bay area. at least moving in from the north. temperatures for tomorrow you can see the range from the low 60s coastside. 70s around the bay. temperatures inland in the upper 80s. a few spots will be approaching the lower 90s, around 90 to 91 degrees. high pressure strengthens a little bit for monday. tomorrow the warmest day of the period implies another cooling
