embarcadero all the way to ocean beach, causing some pretty big traffic delays. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard shows it's a race that spans the city and highlights san francisco's offbeat, creative spirit. three. two. one. >> whoa! >> this is what it looks like when 20,000 plus runners funnel through the financial district on the seven mile trek to ocean beach, bay to breakers off and running at 8 a.m. this true? it's about the grueling run uphill and down, but it's also about the fun and those why didn't i think of it? costumes. all right, high kool-aid. and of course, high barbie down the race course box wine was on the move. >> wine, i guess, is the secret. >> i'm a hydrangea. >> these friends from chico creating a lovely bouquet of flowers. >> last year we were flowers with bumblebees and, butterflies and unfortunately, our bumblebee couldn't make it today because

she's a home with covid. >> trevor meade brought the roar in this jurassic size spectacle. >> his name is dilophosaurus, and, he wanders around, mission area and goes out to festivals and things like that. and, he's kind of a local icon. go, warriors. go, warriors. >> there were road closures for the race. taking many drivers by surprise. the bay bridge toll plaza was gridlock, and by midday, so was the embarcadero. >> we're stuck. absolutely stuck. >> and my map doesn't even know what to tell me to do. >> it keeps rerouting and we're late for a wedding shower. oh, no. >> you know about bay to breakers, right? >> well, we did this morning. yeah, we've known about it our whole lives. we just didn't pay attention. >> traffic was moving by early afternoon. and for the runners and walkers, a near perfect day. >> it's a great race. everybody is so happy. yeah, that's what we like about it in san francisco. >> cornell, bernard, abc seven news. >> costumes keep getting better. well many of the top finishers

of the race are familiar with the run. this is the second year in a row that colin bennie of san francisco came in first place in the men's division is at the luke combs concert down at levi stadium last night. >> so it was a good little pre-race, pre-race warm up. got some good music in my head, but, but it was great, you know, it felt it's hard to not just feed off the energy of this race and have a great time. >> nice job. congratulations >> benny won with a time of 37 minutes and two seconds. he also placed first during last year's bay to breakers. julia vasquez jagger won the women's division with a time of 43 minutes and 49 seconds. she also won in 2022, now in the non-binary category, cal kalamia of san francisco finished first with a time of 44 minutes and 27 seconds. kalamia is a trans and non-binary activist who happened to be the co-host last year of abc seven's coverage of the san francisco pride parade. congrats to

everyone. moving on now, the man convicted of attacking congresswoman nancy pelosi's husband with a hammer is set to get a new sentencing hearing. a federal judge granted a motion to reopen the sentencing in david depapes case because he did not get a chance to speak during his sentencing hearing last friday. a new hearing has been scheduled for tuesday, may 28th. on friday, depape was sentenced to 30 years for the 2022 attack. developing news. a helicopter carrying iran's president is missing after it went down in a remote part of the country. president ebrahim raisi and the nation's foreign minister were both on board. iranian officials say they have located the crash site and are sending teams there, but dense fog and extreme cold is making the search difficult in the mountainous terrain. raisi became president in 2021 with no real prominent opposition. 2000 uc santa cruz graduate student workers say they will strike tomorrow over the school system's crackdown on

pro-palestinian protests. the union says its members have been beaten and pepper sprayed by counter-protesters and police. the uc system says the strike would be in violation of the union's contract, and is asking a state board to issue a cease and desist order. president biden faced protest today as he delivered the commencement speech at morehouse college, an historically black men's college in atlanta. the crowd represented a slice of voters who are drifting away from biden over the war in gaza. reporter rob kirkpatrick shows us the pushback from graduates. >> president joe biden delivered the commencement speech at morehouse college sunday. the historically black college, located in atlanta, is the ama mater of doctor martin luther king junior, who led nonviolent protests during the civil rights movement, something the president reflected on. >> i want to say this very clearly. i support peaceful, nonviolent protest. your voices should be heard, and i promise

you, i hear them. >> as biden began speaking, a student in the audience unfurled a palestinian flag and held it up. some students also turned their chairs away from the president. during his address, i had students ask me about it. >> what if we, you know, turned our backs on the president or turned our chairs? and i said to them, i'll be embarrassed, but that's not your problem. >> pro-palestinian protests have gripped college campuses across the nation in recent months. there have been mixed reactions within the morehouse community to mr. biden's presence on campus. >> if our guest star at commencement is the reason why we have to be so uptight, that we would disavow our pledge to, you know, making the world a better place and not allow people to protest and voice their opinions. then i think that's all the more reason that he shouldn't have been there in the first place. >> rob kirkpatrick, abc seven news in the east bay, two stretches of interstate 680 remain partially closed for repaving work from what we know,

three lanes of southbound 680 have been shut down from al costa boulevard in san ramon to the 580 connector in pleasanton. >> the express lane and left shoulder of northbound 680 is also closed between amador valley boulevard in dublin and al costa boulevard in san ramon. detours are in place for both closures. the highway is scheduled to reopen at 4 a.m. tomorrow. and this is the final weekend closure for highway 37 in the north bay. caltrans released this video of the repaving work on the eastbound side of the highway from sears point to alejo. it's all scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. tomorrow. the detour route, which you see on the right highlighted in green, involves taking one, 21, 12, and 29. happening tomorrow san francisco transit leaders will celebrate a huge injection of funding for the plan to connect caltrain and high speed rail to downtown. the federal government is promising nearly $3.4 billion to the project. the plan is to connect

first black astronaut by president john f kennedy, but after kennedy's assassination, dwight was passed up for the opportunity and never went to space. now, after the rocket returned, dwight was overwhelmed by his experience. >> i thought, i really did need this in my life, but but now i need it in my life. this is fabulous. thank you so much. amazing life changing experience . everybody needs to do this. >> everybody needs to do this. >> and. >> how emotional. the dream delayed. but today, the 90 year old ed dwight is the oldest person to ever launch into space . san francisco was the starting point today for a decades old catholic tradition being revived across the country. parishioners students, and catholic leaders took part in the eucharistic pilgrimage through the city. today. they went from cathedral of saint mary of the assumption all the way across the golden gate bridge. the pilgrimage used to be a catholic tradition, but

orthodox cathedral of the ascension in oakland. there wasn't anywhere you could go without smelling some delicious greek food kiosks sold traditional jewelry as well as ceramics, religious artifacts and clothing. there was also plenty of lamb gyros and baklava to go around. the church has hosted the tradition since 1972. i've been to this and yeah, you've got to go hungry because everywhere you turn there's food for a really good food, too. yes, and i love it because i have greek in-laws. so it's always like after you eat it, eat more, eat more. >> yeah, yeah. it's one of my favorite bay area festivals. i think i've been there 3 or 4 times. oh wow. and great weather for it today. i should have gone today. yeah i'm hungry, but you're right. great weather. dion uh- here's a look at satellite radar composite image. we've got a trough digging in there that's bringing us a robust onshore flow. and we've got wind speeds right now at the surface up to 33mph in san francisco, gusts to 32 at sfo. and i guess you could say this

is a warmup from the yesterday. at this time, only a couple of locations are cooler than at this time yesterday. santa rosa is 11 degrees warmer, concord is nine degrees warmer. so on we go. the view from sutro tower looking down onto san francisco where it's now 59 degrees. we have low to mid 60s at oakland, hayward, uh- low to mid 70s at redwood city and san jose, and 57 at half moon bay. nice view from emeryville. looking back toward the city of the temperature readings right now. 75 at santa rosa, mid to upper 60s at petaluma and napa, only 52 at fairfield. that's got to be a failure to automatically report. and it's a mid to upper 70s at concord and livermore. blue sky over the golden gate. these are our forecast headlines. warmer pattern begins tomorrow tuesday and wednesday. it will feel almost like summer especially on tuesday. we expect temperatures inland to be close to 90 degrees and by the end of the week ahead, breezy and sharply cooler weather will settle in so that warm up won't last very long. overnight, well, not only overnight, but during the late night hours and overnight we'll see almost no

clouds at all. a few may develop down in the santa cruz mountains, but they should erode very quickly tomorrow morning. overnight lows will be mainly in the upper 40s tonight, so slightly cooler than the last couple of nights. we'll see lows of about 50 in san francisco and oakland. then tomorrow's highs about 62. half moon bay 67 san francisco. low to mid 70s around the bay shoreline and up to about 80. in the warmer inland locations like santa rosa, concord, livermore and antioch. now as we skip ahead and look at the maximum temperature range going into the middle of the week tuesday, that warm up i told you about will take inland highs into the upper 80s to near 9088 degrees at fairfield and antioch, 86 at santa rosa and cloverdale, and then still warm inland on wednesday. but you'll see a little bit of cooling near the coast and the bay. and on thursday temperatures will be in a more moderate range. more seasonal range. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so we've got that nice summer-like warm up on tuesday and wednesday, breezy and cooler on thursday. turning sharply cooler on friday as that cooling continues and temperatures will
