[applause] dock of the bay bridge is shut down as firefighters race to put out a fire burning right next to the tunnel. lots of smoke from this fire starting just before

three today, so much that firefighters can't see enough to get an estimate on size. even the broadcast at the giants game caught the smoke. firefighters say high winds plus the steep hillside are making this fire tough to fight and talk about bad timing with that game getting out, chp shut down the eastbound lanes of the bay bridge to give firefighters more space to work. just look at the backup into the city. with the highway looking like a parking lot. cal trans says the backup lasts for five miles. looking live out at our exploratorium camera. firefighting boats have been spraying water on the fire for about an hour now, and it does look like the smoke is dying down. we don't know how close firefighters are to putting this fire out and reopening the eastbound lanes of the bridge. we'll bring you updates as we get them throughout this newscast and on abc seven news.com. good afternoon and thank you for joining us. i'm lauren martinez. now to the north bay, where a

week of controversy at sonoma state university is culminating with commencement ceremonies today. it comes after the sudden retirement of president mike lee this week. the csu chancellor placed lee on leave after he made a deal with pro-palestinian protesters without proper approval. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard shows us the protests during graduation and has details on the fallout >> hundreds of sonoma state grads rocking their caps and gowns during commencement ceremonies after a dramatic week on campus involving former president mike lee. but alex can't think about that right now . >> today is about me. i'm glad to have my dad here to see me graduate, so that was more on my mind than the school. >> lee's retirement was announced friday by csu chancellor mildred garcia, a day after she put him on leave for insubordination because of an

agreement lee made with pro-palestinian student protesters who had occupied an encampment. lee told them he would initiate an academic boycott of israel, among other things, which angered the jewish community. >> there was no communication with the jewish community, with the with the jewish students, with faculty, it was as if we didn't exist. >> students for justice in palestine held this silent protest during graduation. for more than an hour, a line of police not letting the group approach the commencement stage. sonoma state's acting president acknowledged this week's controversy, with student protesters without even mentioning mike lee by name. >> i also want to acknowledge this current moment in time, one in which college campuses, including our own, have been spaces of social change, and i am proud of this university community for appropriately focusing today's attention on our graduates and their supporters. >> i have very mixed feelings right now. >> bd white supports mike lee and says she refused to shake hands with the acting president after getting her diploma.

>> thank you for taking a stand, president lee. i hope you enjoy retirement and thank you for doing the right thing. >> activist susan lamont standing outside with this sign supporting lee university's today are totally corporately owned. >> now, you know, just by their investments and that sort of thing. >> last weekend, pro-palestinian protesters interrupted uc berkeley's graduation ceremony. saturday's sonoma state commencement saw no delays but lots of pomp and circumstance at sonoma state. cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> six people ended up hurt in a bad crash on highway four today. it happened in antioch, near summersville road. it appears at least two cars crashed and one of them landed upside down. contra costa county firefighters didn't share how badly the six people were hurt. prosecutors in the east bay will not file criminal charges against the richmond police officers, who shot and killed a man last summer. richmond police, show me your hands. >> show me your hands. >> that is the moment before

bullets started flying. back in june, richmond police were searching the home of a man arrested with a gun. the suspect's roommate, 66 year-old kevin mcdonald, was inside the house. prosecutors say when officers opened the door to mcdonald's room, he pointed an assault rifle at them. two officers fired, killing mcdonald. they later found dozens of guns in his room. this week, the contra costa district attorney's office decided the officers acted in self-defense and should not face criminal charges. we are less than six months out to the november election, where we'll be picking a president, a senator in san francisco's mayor today, mayor london breed formally announced her reelection campaign. it was a packed house at the fillmore auditorium. for breed's kickoff. the mayor was direct about some of the city's biggest challenges, saying she wouldn't apologize for her police crackdown on drug markets. but for the most part, breed's speech was hopeful. celebrating revitalization in the city and promising more change for downtown.

>> it has to be a place where people work, where they live and where they play, so my economic recovery plan 30 by 30, bringing 30,000 new residents to downtown by 2030. >> breed is facing four major challengers former supervisor and interim mayor mark farrell, nonprofit founder daniel lurie, supervisor aaron peskin and supervisor asha sapphire. the candidates were set to debate monday night at manny's in the mission, but organizers canceled the event after too many backed out. california's largest gathering of republicans is happening this weekend on the peninsula, and the biggest headline has nothing to do with our state. south dakota governor kristi noem spoke today at the california republican party's convention. she made headlines and potentially blew her vice presidential candidate chances after writing in her new book how she shot and killed her dog, the state gop defended noem speech, calling her a proven

leader in her speech, noem talked about people being too easily offended and urging us to talk to people we disagree with. >> we live in a country that is addicted to being offended, don't we? we just love to be offended. >> republicans best shot at statewide office didn't even show up for the convention. senate candidate steve garvey skipped the event. it's an unusual move for a major candidate, but it tracks with his strategy so far with limited public appearances. well, housing is one of our biggest challenges we face as we work to build a better bay area. one solution is turning empty. commercial spaces into apartments, a new report shows. one bay area city is one of the top in the country for it, an analysis by rent cafe found alameda had the third most apartment conversions in the country. last year. developers turned warehouse space into 372 housing units. only new york city and richmond, virginia, had

more rent. cafe says projects like these are on the rise across the country, with most of them focused on turning old hotels or office buildings into apartments calling for better work conditions took their demands to the streets of healdsburg today, more than 200 farm workers and supporters rallied to demand disaster pay and what they call dignified wages. the rally was organized by the group north bay jobs with justice. they say the they held the event as the same time as the healdsburg wine and food experience. to illustrate the economic gap between many in the wine country and those who work in the vineyards. happening now. it's the final weekend closure for state road 37. in the north bay, the eastbound side of the highway, which extends from sears point to vallejo, will remain closed until 5 a.m. monday morning.

caltrans is repaving the road. the detour route involves taking one, 21, 12, and 29 highlighted in green. if you're planning on traveling up through wine country, you may need to plan some additional time for your trip. interstate 680 in the east bay are partially closed this weekend. caltrans has shut down three lanes of southbound 680 for road work from al costa boulevard in san ramon to the 580 connector in pleasanton, when that closure is scheduled to end at 4 a.m. monday. also, the express lane and left shoulder of northbound 680 is closed between amador valley boulevard in dublin and al costa boulevard in san ramon. detours are in place for both closures. well, one of the bay area's weirdest races is about to take off. the traffic headache is about to begin for bay to breakers, as the first street closures are about to start. looking ahead to a busy travel

traffic on the bridge are now open, but it will take a while before the delays are gone. caltrans estimated a five mile backup from the bay bridge to the 280 interchange. video taken from the westbound lanes near fifth avenue shows some drivers out of their cars and standing around, and others trying to turn around and get off the highway. the city streets are also a mess. we'll continue to follow the developments as crews continue to work to put out a fire on yerba buena island it is a san francisco tradition, and tomorrow, the bay area's wackiest running event returns. thousands of people will take off from the embarcadero tomorrow for beta breakers. it's fun for the racers, but it can make for a traffic headache.

anyone? for everyone else in the city, the sfmta will start shutting down streets in just a few hours. the race begins at 8 a.m. runners go from the embarcadero all the way to ocean beach. the first road closure by the start and finish. lines begin at seven tonight. the sfmta says most streets should reopen by two tomorrow afternoon . we have a full list of road closures and all the details you need to know to attend, or steer clear of the traffic. you can find it all on abc seven news.com. looking live out at sfo in oakland airport this afternoon as one of the cheaper airlines there makes a big change, low cost carrier frontier airlines is revamping its fare structure and eliminating change fees. it's a move to attract more travelers by packaging travel extras. passengers will now have the option to choose bundles that include priority boarding, seat assignments and checked baggage, and the changes come just in time for memorial day weekend,

is celebrating with special events and a fireworks show. a century in the making, it's now the fourth oldest roller coaster in the united states. >> it's one of the 10th oldest roller coasters in the world, so it's really one of the last of its kind. it's a really special treasure. >> i've been coming here since i was little this is my first time. this first time. so just sharing a little piece of history and my family with him, you know, ride it. how many times? >> ten times as many as we can. we can. >> back when it first opened, it cost just $0.15 to ride the dipper. i don't remember the last time i rode the dipper. >> i don't think i've been on it. >> you haven't been on? >> no, i haven't. i'm not a roller coaster guy. >> oh you're not, but i like to watch and listen to other people screaming. >> yes, yes. yeah, that's a good people watching activity. exactly. and today was good. a day for getting out there. a little bit breezy, a little cooler than average. but that's okay. it's a pleasant day. mainly sunny right now. you can see here on the satellite radar composite image. the brisk onshore flow. and right now you

see the wind speeds at the surface only 12mph here in san francisco, but pretty gusty in some of our interior locations. move along and take a look at the 24 hour temperature changes. generally about 2 to 5 degrees cooler across the bay area than at this time yesterday. still cooler than average, but a pleasant day with mainly sunny skies, as we see from the emeryville camera. 59 degrees here in san francisco right now we have mid to upper 60s at oakland, hayward, low 70s at san jose and redwood city. that's pretty mild and 55 degrees at half moon bay. a little bit of cloud cover over the bay bridge. but it's a it's up. it's up in the air. of course it's up in the air. it's not low clouds yet. it's a mid-level clouds. we have mid 60s right now at santa rosa, petaluma and napa, fairfield and livermore, mid 70s and 68 degrees at concord. and these are our forecast headlines. mostly sunny and pleasant tomorrow for beta breakers. early next week we'll see a warming trend even even some summer-like warmth is coming our way. but late in the week it'll turn gusty and sharply cooler all over again. for this evening, look for a few clouds to gather along the san mateo county coastline, but the

marine layer won't be very widespread in the early evening hours. may develop more during the overnight hours. and speaking of overnight, we expect low temperature to temperatures to be mainly in the low to mid 40s in the farther north locations, so a little bit chillier there, but low 50s just about everywhere else. and bay to breakers tomorrow starting at 8 a.m. here in san francisco. tomorrow we'll see mainly sunny skies at that hour, temperatures in the mid 50s climbing gradually up to low 60s as we get into the midday hours, and speaking of midday, high temperatures tomorrow will reach into the mid to upper 70s inland. we'll see low 70s around the bay shoreline, upper 50s on the coast. so pleasant day, but still cooler than average. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. notice a warming trend that begins on monday. we'll see upper 80s inland on tuesday and then mid 80s on wednesday. before that, sharply cooler and breezy pattern settles in on thursday of next week. >> the giants trying to do something this afternoon. they haven't done all season. win
