[ laughter ] they were out in the rain early this morning. that is in our last hour. also ahead, ginger tracking the severe weather pattern, including the tornado watch issued for florida. >> george: we begin with donald trump's criminal trial. his former lawyer, michael cohen faced cross-examination yesterday where the defense attacked his credibility after cohen tied trump to the falsified documents at issue in the case. aaron katersky is at the courthouse. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: good morning. the trial does not sit wednesday, so michael cohen will be back tomorrow for more cross-examination that did take aim at his credibility and motives. michael cohen used to be full of flattery. defense said he once vowed he would take a bullet for donald trump. admired donald trump's success and called the art of the deal a master piece. cohen conceded, that's how i felt, but he said at that time i was knee deep into the cult of donald

trump. now the defense is seeking to cast cohen as a witness with an agenda, bent on revenge, who bad mouths trump in books, podcasts and online. you referred to president trump as a boarist, isn't you? a cheetoh dusted cartoon villain? that sounds like something i said. blanche asking, you want to see president trump get convicted, correct? cohen replied, sure. cohen kept his composure. trump kept his eyes closed. cohen testified trump affirmed the plan to reimburse him the $130,000 he sent to stormy daniels to silence her claim of a sexual encounter trump denies. where did the conversation take place? in the oval office, cohen responded. the jury saw this picture of cohen at the white house and this calendar entry. did he say anything about what would be forth coming to you? yes, cohen said. it would be a check for january and february. the check stub said the money was part of a retainer agreement. were the descriptions false, the

prosecutor asked? yes. there was no retainer agreement, is that right? that's correct. cohen is the only witness to directly tie trump to the allegedly falsified business records, but in the first two hours of cross-examination the defense did not ask about the records, the hush money or stormy daniels. trump left court declaring the day a win. and trump has said over and over that he would testify in his own defense, but away from the jury when the judge asked do you have any indication whether your client is going to testify? defense attorney todd blanche answered no. and, george, he went on to suggest the defense may call no witnesses at all. george? >> george: thanks. let's bring in dan abrams and rachel scott. dan, let me begin with you. you were in that courtroom yesterday. tell me about it. >> one of the things that struck me the most, where the witness sits is in kind of a nook next to the judge. the defense table is kind of in the middle of the room and allows michael cohen to look straight ahead and not look at donald trump.

and donald trump to look straight ahead and not look at michael cohen. that's exactly what was happening. they were both sort of staring straight ahead, but they're not staring at each other. and every time michael cohen would walk past donald trump, you could see there was gonna be no eye contact between the two. very formal passing, etc. as if the other person didn't exist. with regard to the substance of what happened, so far not a whole lot surprising, right? they're going after michael cohen's motives. there's a lot to work with. defense saying it's for money, revenge, for relevance. >> george: his basic answer is yes? >> yessish. but, see, a lot of times he hedges. well, that's something i would say. then they say, did you say it? then eventually he concedes yes, it is something that i said. so far it's all been about, you know, why he's doing this as opposed to details. >> george: is there really a chance that donald trump takes the stand?

>> none. there's no way donald trump takes the stand. >> george: they should be closing this case -- >> pretty soon. they're talking about an expert witness they may call. we're going to see the end of this i think next week. >> george: rachel, we saw more republican politicians in the courtroom yesterday. speaker of the house. >> a striking moment in american politics, george. this is not just any republican lawmaker. this is the speaker of the house, second in line to the presidency showing up in this manhattan courtroom outside to blast the american judicial system and to do what donald trump cannot do, which is go after the witnesses, including michael cohen. we know donald trump is barred from doing that under this gag order. if you had any doubt this is a republican party that has lined up around the former president, all you have to do is look at that image of trump and all those republicans lining up behind him, including some that are hoping to be his running mate. >> george: you also cover capitol hill. democrats saved the speaker's job last week. they're unlikely to do that again. >> unlikely to do it again. look, they went out on the line for him. speaker johnson was able to get aid to ukraine passed, keep the government funded.

trump came to his defense. >> george: michael? >> michael: now to new trouble for boeing as the justice department takes a step that could lead to criminal prosecution of the company over the crashes of two 737 max jets. transportation correspondent gio benitez has more for us from newark airport. good morning, gio. >> gio: good morning. yeah, this goes back to that tragic max crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people. you remember those scenes. they were horrific. department of justice originally allowed boeing a sort of get out of jail free card under the condition that it would follow certain rules. boeing agreed to those rules. then that door plug fell off the alaska max 9 in january. the doj now says that boeing has breached its obligations by failing to design, implement and enforce a compliance and ethics program to prevent and detect violations of the u.s. throughout its operation. boeing has responded overnight telling abc news, we believe we have honored the terms of that agreement and look forward to the opportunity to respond to

the department on this issue. the question now though, what does a potential punishment even look like for boeing? nobody seems to know just yet. boeing has until mid june to reply, robin? >> robin: we will see what that reply will be. gio, thank you. now the israel/hamas war. the white house is moving forward with more than $1 billion in new weapons for israel as the administration monitors american aid workers trapped in gaza. matt gutman in tel aviv with the latest. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the white house alerting congress late yesterday that series of new weapons deals for israel worth more than $1 billion. it comes a week after the white house suspended a shipment of bombs to israel, concern they might be used against civilians in rafah. it does appear that israel is edging ever closer to that incursion. israel intensifying air attacks in rafah, pounding areas it left

months ago and stepping up what it calls specific targeted attacks in east rafah which the biden administration repeatedly said would be a mistake. aid continues to be a flash point. israel bombing a u.n. affiliated school tuesday, but also releasing this video from saturday saying it shows gunmen prowling u.n. compounds. day after day israeli protesters blocking aid trucks entering gaza, where the u.n. says malnourishment is rampant. the u.n., which has begun using lower casualty numbers for women and children in gaza citing incomplete data, said nearly half million have fled rafah. among those stuck there, nurse monica johnston, part of a group of about 20 american medical aid workers whose dwindling medical supplies are forcing them to ration care. you stopped wound care on a 7-year-old child with severe burns? >> yes. his prognosis -- >> reporter: did you have to let him die? >> we continued on with treatments. if things were looking good we

would have reconsidered it. instead of dressing on maybe day two or three. but he kept getting worse. >> reporter: they are even out of hand soap. >> we have almost 100% infection rate because of the conditions we're in. almost 100%. isn't that crazy? on top of that, everyone is malnourished. little kids here are toothpicks. they barely have any kind of reserves at all. >> reporter: and because there is no soap they tell me they are forced to sanitize hands using iodine or sometimes just water. they were supposed to leave monday. their departure keeps getting delayed. israeli government telling me its border crossings are open to international aid workers. the issue is getting there. george? >> george: matt, thank you very much. now the latest inflation numbers set to be released later this morning. rebecca jarvis is on wall street with a look at what to expect. good morning, rebecca. >> rebecca: good morning, george. this is a critical report on the economy because it tells us how fast prices are

rising. it shows that inflation is easing to its lowest level since 2021. now up 3.4% from a year ago. families are spending $227 more a month compared to a year ago on the same goods and services. about $1,000 more compared to three years ago. with incomes rising costs going up have meant credit card statements, how much money you're putting on that credit card, is also rising. gen z is the most likely group to max out their credit card. the fed signaled rates are going to stay higher for longer, very likely to make some kind of cut if things stay like this later this year. we're starting to see it impact other areas, like student loans. with fixed interest rates moving up to their highest level in nearly two decades. george? >> george: that's right. rebecca, we are going to have

more on the impact on student loans and families in our next hour. thanks for that. robin? >> robin: red lobster planning to file for bankruptcy protection after abruptly closing dozen of locations across the country. stephanie ramos is in one of those restaurants outside the city. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: robin, good morning. right now there are at least 99 of these family friendly restaurants closed, including this one. >> our famous garlic shrimp scampi. >> reporter: this morning one beloved restaurant campaign finding itself in troubled waters. >> endless shrimp is here. limited time. >> reporter: red lobster abruptly closing dozens of branches across the country, with stores in at least 27 states shutting down. tag x brand a company that handles restaurant auctions telling abc news that red lobster recently contacted them to auction off items from 52 stores that will be closing. the wall street journal reporting that the brand is filing for bankruptcy among steep losses.

a major investor blamed one promotion in particular for the company's woes. >> for just $20 right now. >> reporter: during an earnings call, the group sharing red lobster's endless shrimp promo cost the brand millions in losses. >> the proportion of the people selecting these promotions much higher compared to expectations. >> consumers now are looking for value when they're going outside the home. and i think that consumers really ate more than red lobster could afford. >> reporter: with inflation picking away at the pockets of many americans, consumers are pivoting to restaurants that offer good value per price, with fast, casual chains experiencing a surge in popularity. >> red lobster is not a fast, casual environment. it may be fast seafood, but seafood is still expensive. it is still a dining experience.

following a lot of headlines right now. donald trump's criminal trial. michael cohen faced cross-examination yesterday. the defense attacked his credibility after cohen directly tied trump to the falsified documents at issue in the case. trump said several times that he would testify, but when the judge asked, the defense attorney answered no. also right now preliminary report from the ntsb found the container ship that crashed into the francis key bridge lost power twice before the collision. dali also lost power just before the collision which left six people dead and the port of baltimore at a standstill. >> michael: king charles unveiled his first official portrait since his coronation. the 6 foot tall painting, three years in the making, shows the king in a red military uniform with a red background a butterfly symbolizing he is ascending to the throne. >> robin: okay. got a lot of reaction. >> michael: i like it, too. >> robin: i didn't say i didn't like it. i said it got a lot of reaction.

killed their family dog oliver. >> i heard emory screaming, my you youngest. i just heard her say, did you just shoot my dog? i was like, what? >> reporter: it doesn't compute? >> she just started screaming. i played law enforcement 30 years. it's so different. so different. >> reporter: harmon, law and order actress -- >> list of property stolen from the hagan home. >> reporter: -- who was previously married to jason sehorn, had put a grocery order in for easter sunday. harmon said she was communicating with the shopper meryl via text message, but on the other end of the phone, someone else. what about the idea that he was not a middle aged woman named meryl? >> i think it didn't really hit us until later. that's when we called insta cart. they were just like, oh gosh, that's terrible. we'll see what we can do. we'll get back to you.

i was like, no, you don't understand. this man was claiming to be -- it looked like we were talking to a middle age slightly older woman named meryl, who was talking to me and talking to me about my order. that's not who showed up at my house. >> reporter: after the groceries were delivered, a gun shot rang out. harmon, inside, upstairs. her daughters 15-year-old and 18-year-old ran to the yard screaming. were you afraid of a man with a hollstered weapon on your property? >> i think we were in such shock. i was just screaming at avery to call 911. when i said that he said, no, i'm calling 911. i'll do it. >> your dog tried to bite me. i'm calling you all, texting you all. >> call 911 now. >> i'm on the phone with 911. the dogs went off. the dog is trying to bite me. so what am i supposed to do?

one of them left. i shot one of them. >> reporter: charlotte police arriving at harmon's home telling abc news the driver told officers a dog attacked him and he defended himself by firing a single gun shot striking and mortally wounding the dog. did you see any indication that he had been attacked? >> no. not at all. >> reporter: torn clothing? >> nothing, no. >> reporter: bite marks? >> no. >> reporter: with no charges filed and the case closed, harmon wants answers. her team filing a lawsuit against insta cart and the shopper alleging criminal trespassing and negligence. what made you want to file a lawsuit? >> first of all, i think insta cart is beyond responsible for all of this. like, this didn't have to happen. and, you know, the damages that it has done to our family -- >> reporter: abc news reached out to insta cart. the company saying, while we cannot comment on pending

litigation, we have no tolerance for violence of any kind and the shopper account has been permanently deactivated from her platform. was he ever aggressive with people? >> no. >> reporter: did he ever attack people? >> no. i order five amazon packages a day and it's never been an issue. >> reporter: how do you move forward after this? >> as hard as it is, getting the word out there that people need to know that, you know, who they're talking to on insta cart is not necessarily who's gonna show up at your house. >> reporter: because the driver claimed self-defense the case was closed. angie said oliver showed no signs of having bitten or attacked anyone. insta cart said they use third party background checks and take steps to verify identity. insta cart said their policy does not allow for sharing pass word or carrying of weapons. but, robin, clearly there's so much to sort out in this. >> george: wow.

the education department said the interest rates on a federal under graduate loan will hit 6.53% in the next academic year. that's a full percentage point higher than this year's rate. it's because we have seen borrowing costs go up, as the federal reserve has tried to fight inflation. this change, it can make a big difference when you're looking at monthly payments. bank rate said if you're take out a $10,000 federal under grad loan you'd pay about $3,000 in interest total at that old rate. that's compared to $3,600 in interest at the new rate. that's $600 more expensive. this will only apply to people getting new loans. if you already have debt you are locked in at your existing rate. people taking out graduate or parent loans will end up paying closer to 8%, 9%. good news for borrowers is the government has expanded options for student loan forgiveness. families can go to see if they qualify by going to student

aid.gov. michael? >> michael: thanks, elizabeth. a new warning from the cdc about an increase in drowning deaths with more than half adults never having a swim lesson. our medical correspondent dr. darien sutton is here to break it down. dr. sutton, good morning. tell us about this report and who is most at risk? >> some alarming numbers. i had chance to talk to the chief medical officer at the cdc about this concerning data. some of the numbers are stark when you realize how difficult and dangerous these numbers are. one person dies of drowning every two hours in the united states. that's more than 4,500 people annual. black americans, native americans and alaska americans seem to be the most at risk. a lot of this centers around inability to know how to swim or it's lack of training in water. more than half of u.s. adults reported never having had a swim lesson. 15% of adults say they don't know how to swim. that equates to almost 40 million people. >> michael: wow. big number of people. okay. it's amazing that over half haven't had a swim lesson. we're getting ready to head into summer. how can you stay safe?

her handle r. president of the westminster kennel club, good morning to you. hi. hello, sage. sage, you get the special pedestal. thank you very much. thank you. i want to start with you while we get settled. thanks for being with us. >> thanks for having us, lara. >> lara: i want to ask you, because i know the competition looked pretty fierce, at least to me. what are the judges looking for, and what did they see in sage that was the clear choice? >> sure. well, i think when you take into account there are 2,500 champions competing. up into the groups where we had all of the top ten dogs in the group in the national ranking actually showed at westminster this year. the competition was fierce. when we got to the finals, for a tennis reference, that final lineup was like watching nadal and federer pay. that was the level of competition in that ring, really. it was intense. >> lara: that's amazing.

when you say that, you are saying this is like truly an elite group, which we know. how did you feel the competition stacked up this year? >> i think this was one of the strongest lineups. when you get to that level all the dogs have to conform to a breed standard. and so at that level, they all do. it comes down to, i think, which great dog is having a great night? sage was perfection in every moment last night. >> lara: yes, she is. are you ready now? i was trying to buy you time. [ laughter ] you have seen a lot of primping. >> i think she looks okay. [ laughter ] >> lara: to us, she's perfect. what goes into coiffing this beauty? like before the show, how long did it take to get this look? >> takes a long time. routine. monday we get nails done, feet done. tuesday face clipped. wednesday -- >> lara: it is like a lady. >> it is every week. >> lara: she is really

magnificent. you have been doing this a long long time. how many years have you been showing dogs? >> 45 years. >> lara: how many times have you made it to westminster? >> lots of times. this is my 45th westminster. >> lara: this is your 45th? >> yes. >> lara: i also want to tell everybody, this is your last. what a way to end it. >> yeah. well, you know, i came here since i was 20 years old. this was my dream. took me 22 years to win best in show here. like 2002. great great grandmother. then after 22 years. yesterday. i am done. >> lara: she is just posing. i can't get over what a beautiful young lady she is. how old is she? >> 3 1/2. >> lara: will she continue to perform or do shows or is this? >> oh, no. i'm done. she's done.

>> george: that is how you talk to a queen. the costumes are so elaborate. what is the process like? >> look at my head, george. [ laughter ] look at lady danbury's hair. i am a mission. every hair and makeup artist looks to me and their heart sinks. i'm in makeup for about three hours in the morning before we even talk about the costume. >> three hours? >> they have to do -- it's quite a technical thing. they have to do a 360 degree wig. i have said most of the time i want my hair up because lady danbury is a watcher and strategizer. hair needs to be off the face. you have to have a wig that you can sell on screen. it looks like it's come out of my head. >> robin: it does look like that, now that you mentioned it. i like this as well. >> i like this, yeah. >> robin: claudia, you and the fabulous actress who plays penelopen real life you are real close. but your characters are a little bit at odds. how do you pull that off?

>> i got through the woeful patch. at the end of season 2 we had a scene where we had a huge falling out. but in between takes me and nicola would be like, quick cuddle? [ laughter ] have a little cuddle to say, we still got each other. it's okay. we hardly saw each other this season. we would catch each other in the hallway in the studio saying, you're doing so good! >> robin: sweet. >> yes. very honest. shady but good. >> george: you're the voice of reason. your character is the voice of reason. when it comes to love and romance. >> tell that to my children. my mother, reason? i don't think so. but, yeah. in the show i suppose, i think, so people who have enjoyed the stand alone queen charlotte story. you kind of see lady danbury back story. so you know that she came from a place of a horrible marriage, unhappy, husband dies, thank goodness. then she's powerless. she understands that all she has

to tie her future to is her ability to make use of knowledge. she knows about the young queen. she trades with george's mother on that and says, i'll give you knowledge about the queen. my son needs something. she does that strategizing. so when you see her now, she's a woman who's made her own mark in the world through her brain and strategy. so that reasoning comes from that need to survive. yes. >> robin: all of it is brilliant. the acting, the directing, the producing, the set. all of that. it's not just here in the u.s. that we go crazy. globally, globally. don't you find that in your travels? >> yeah. it's quite something. i was traveling to australia a couple of years ago for work. i was in london at an airport. someone said, i love the show. i was so happy. got to the halfway point in qatar and people at the airport were like, we are big fans of the show. got to australia. it was the same thing.

prue, welcome. paul, nice to see you. thanks for being with us from london. >> hello. nice to see you again. >> lara: i want to start by asking you, since you both judge on both the american and british version, what would you say the difference is between the bakers in the two shows? the american versus the brits. >> i'd say the bakers in america like more sugar than in england. >> lara: interesting. >> but do you know what? from a talent and a skill point of view, they're pretty alike, aren't they? >> lara: what do you think, paul? >> i think the americans are far worse. [ laughter ] >> lara: worse in what way? worse with sugar or talent? be careful. >> actually, i think they are sitting way behind the brits up until a couple years ago. and now i think certainly they're on par. couple challenges last year were so much better. >> lara: both shows are terrific. i know that

every show has a technical challenge where the bakers don't know ahead of time what they're baking. they get limited instruction. paul, what's the toughest technical challenge you have witnessed them go through? >> you see, i have done things where they may not know the name of the dessert, and that was actually a technical challenge. no one knew what it was. that's a big problem. when they can't identify something, that creates a huge problem in the technical challenge. >> that was one of his challenges. i think it was deeply unfair. >> lara: paul, prue said it best. let's look at the show. it's so fun. >> apple whiskey. i have never had an apple whiskey. can i have a taste? >> go for it. >> i love the way you use the spoon. that's like medicine to you. isn't it? i can smell it from here. >> good. all right. i'm looking forward to that. >> awesome. >> good luck, mate. >> thank you so much.
