headlines coming out of disney upfront comedy, music, drama. >> we have it all covered. >> good morning. welcome to wednesday, may 15th. yes. >> we're going to start check of our forecast with drew. >> yes. happy to have you sitting next to me again. >> thank you friend i miss you back. >> here's a live look outside our east bay hills camera showing you that sun is up here. we do have our morning stratus clouds with us, so we begin the day with overcast skies and numerous cities. the lone exception inland. we do have mainly clear skies, so we'll take a look at temperatures. right now we are running a few degrees warmer compared to this time yesterday, so you can see from livermore to half moon bay to fremont, we're starting out in the 50s. it's a similar story in the north bay as well. the lone exception parts of lake county quite warm right now, clearly coming in with a temperature of 67 degrees. we'll break the forecast down by regions today along the coast we get that afternoon peeks of sunshine here. but temperatures thanks to onshore flow keeping us mainly in the 50s the next 24 hours around the bay shoreline. we begin today with those clouds. we get that sunshine

breaking out in the afternoon. we'll have those temperatures mild in the low 70s in most areas, with that marine layer rolling on back here later on this evening. and inland, we're starting out with clear skies that'll get temperatures warm into the low and mid 80s in the afternoon. let's see how that commute is going with amanda. good morning. good morning drew. >> our overall map showing that the commute is clear in a lot of parts of the bay area, except for in the east bay. and that's because of the sigalert that we're following. this is on westbound 80 in oakland. if you're heading into the city, you'll notice that the grand avenue offramp is shut down because of a big rig crash. drivers will notice that big rig on its side. there is no estimated time of reopening, so keep that in mind as you make your way into san francisco. back to the desk. >> thank you. amanda. new this morning a project to build more housing for farmworkers in half moon bay is moving forward. the decision coming early this morning after hours of debate. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joining us live with the final vote and gloria, many, including governor newsom, say this project is a long time

coming. >> they do kumasi, but the project was controversial. it was initially approved by the city council, but it stalled with the planning commission. the governor among those pushing for it to move forward, the meeting going on until after midnight, with a half moon bay planning commission approving the project 4 to 1 supporters to bring the housing project for farmworkers packed the planning commission meeting in half moon bay yesterday. the plan is to build a five story, 40 unit building there where a house at 555 kelly avenue now sits. the push comes after last year's mass shooting, the deadliest in san mateo county's history. seven farmworkers on two farms were killed and the tragedy exposed their poor living conditions. tuesday marked the third hours long meeting that the commission discussed and questioned the project, and among the planning commission's concerns, the size of the building, parking and that's not all. >> so i'd like to understand what the meaning of local means. is it city of half moon bay

boundaries for the farms related to the city of half moon bay boundaries? or does local mean all the farms along the coast side? >> i've gone through a mix of emotions, everything from, you know, hope and just worry >> that is the executive director of the nonprofit. alas one of the applicants that's heading up that project on thursday, governor gavin newsom threatened potential legal action against the half moon bay planning commission, calling for a delay to vote egregious. and that site would be a mix of housing for senior farmworkers. it would also include a resource center live in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thanks, gloria. developing news the biden administration is moving forward with a new weapons deal with israel. this is worth more than $1 billion. amanda. just last week, the u.s. paused a shipment of large bombs to the region. >> now, reggie and critics say this move undermines president joe biden's message of holding israel accountable. >> some are accusing the white

house of sending mixed messages. you may remember last week, the white house announced it paused a single shipment of 2,000 pound bombs. there were fears they would be used in israel's invasion in rafah, leaders with the united nations are appalled by the idf's escalation in southern gaza. >> these developments are further impeding humanitarian access and worsening an already dire situation. at the same time, hamas goes on firing rockets indiscriminately. civilians must be respected and protected at all times. >> according to the un, about 450,000 palestinians have been displaced, un officials say. inland, rafah is now like a ghost town. more aid is on the way for people still sheltering in gaza. the pentagon says the gaza pier that brings in aid by the sea will be open in the coming days. back to you, kumasi. >> thank you. amanda. this morning, 20 u.s. doctors, including two from the bay area, are trapped in gaza. abc seven spoke with the family of one of

those doctors, doctor hayley shock. sheikholeslami is a family physician from sutter health in san carlos. she entered through gaza through the rafah crossing back in april for a two week medical mission. her family says she's now unable to exit into egypt and come back home. she has a husband and two grown daughters here in the bay area. >> i know her daughters have been really struggling. it's in the past few weeks, you know, going through all of this. >> the council on american islamic relations says there's at least one more doctor from the bay area who is also trapped there, along with three from southern california. we won't stop till numbers get strong. in the bay area pro palestinian protesters tried to block the entrance of google's i o developers conference in mountain view. protesters are demanding the tech giant end its so-called project nimbus, which is an ai surveillance software

that protesters allege is being used by the israeli government to target civilians. we reached out to google for comment. we have yet to hear back. >> people have been protesting on college campuses across the state say they are headed for uc merced today. they plan to protest outside a uc regents meeting that will include some people who were at uc berkeley for weeks camping that encampment has now been cleared out. the university says it reached an agreement to expedite what it calls a new, quote, social responsible investment strategy. now uc regents say they have no plans to sell assets despite protesters demands. yesterday, the regents revealed the university system has $32 billion invested in companies that make weapons or otherwise support israel. >> it's very complicated, some of them are time commitments that we've made, and the students need to understand that. but we i think we need to do a better job at communicating that.

>> at least one committee member said the board should consider protesters demands when looking at future investments. >> today, protesters at san francisco state planned to give more details about an agreement they say they've reached with university leadership. the encampment there has been up for more than two weeks now, and according to organizers of the encampment, the university has agreed to divest from weapons manufacturers and other similar groups in the future. in the south bay, a new encampment formed on the san jose state campus on monday. this one is located near the statue of tommie smith and john carlos, who famously protested during a medal ceremony at the 1968 summer olympics. the school has warned students that they need to take the tents down or face sanctions. >> the family of a man who died after he was forcibly restrained by antioch police in 2020, has reached a settlement with the department. the antioch city council approved a $7.5 million payment last night, according to a spokesperson for the family's attorney, angelo quinto's family

says he was having a mental health episode when officers responded to his home. during the interaction, officers knelt on his neck and he later died. the da did not file criminal charges against the officers involved. the family and antioch mayor planned to hold a news conference today to speak about this settlement. the fbi and department of homeland security are putting out a warning regarding pride events next month. they say foreign terrorist groups like isis could make them a target. federal agencies believe that the threat is being compounded by the contentious political environment here in the u.s. abc seven news reporter tim johns talked to sf pride leaders. >> it's one of the most lively celebrations in the bay area. every june, our region comes alive with the sights and sounds of pride. >> we want to celebrate that people in san francisco live authentic lives and that we can love who we love. >> but ahead of this year's celebrations comes a new public service announcement from the fbi and department of homeland

security. in it, a warning that foreign terrorist organizations like isis could target pride events around the country. cameron pollan works with the fbi's branch here in san francisco. >> the public service announcement is definitely something new. this year, the fbi says. >> as of now, there are no immediate, credible threats here in the bay area. however, they are advising people to take precautions. reporter beyond the fbi's warnings, san francisco pride executive director suzanne ford says sadly, threats against pride events are nothing new. >> our organization for many, many years has worked with state, local, federal law enforcement agencies and other appropriate agencies to make sure our communities safe. >> the fbi's psa has also gotten the attention of groups like equality california, the lgbtq nonprofit says they want everyone to be comfortable celebrating pride. this year. >> i go with a friend, let people know you're attending pride. have a meetup spot, have an exit plan. know a checkpoint around the area because with pride kicking off in just a few

this is so interesting. a new study shows nightlife is helping fuel san francisco's economic recovery following the pandemic. university of toronto researchers looked at cell phone data from various downtowns across the country. in san francisco, it shows activity during work hours hit 56% of pre-pandemic levels, but now look at after hours activity. it jumped to 94% of pre-pandemic numbers. mayor london breed recently proposed making a portion of downtown the state's first entertainment zone, which basically means you can drink in the streets. banking on nightlife to boost the economy. interesting time now is 614 developing news concerns this morning of racism and bigotry, anti-black harassment within the san francisco unified school

district. with only a few weeks left before school ends this year, amanda, one community leader, wants the district to take action. >> reggie aqui reverend amos brown with the naacp is calling on san francisco unified to hold people who commit racist acts against students accountable. during a rally ahead of last night's board meeting, doctor brown recounted several racist incidents against black students. a young girl also spoke about an incident where she was targeted at school. >> there was this fourth grader i wanted to play with her really badly because she was like really popular and she said, sorry, me, i can't play with you because of your skin color. >> my god. >> the group went inside and briefly interrupted the district's meeting. the superintendent put out this statement. it reads in part. quote sf usd takes reports of racism very seriously, and we encourage anyone who was a victim or witnesses such behavior to report it to a trusted adult at school. when we

learn of a concern, we take immediate steps to investigate, educate, assign consequence depending on the outcomes of the investigation and work to repair the harm. using restorative practices. in the superintendent's statement, he linked a host of resources on the topic for staff and families there aimed to address and understand racism and anti-blackness. back to you at the desk kumasi. >> thank you amanda. >> new developments in the rush to get highway one back open near big sur. the governor's office says the road will finally reopen this week. a month and a half after storms eroded that southbound lane. you remember part of the highway. it crumbled into the ocean back in march. it cut off the route between carmel and big sur. well, after weeks of work by caltrans, crews say it will now be ready for drivers starting at 630 friday morning. if you're heading out of town for the memorial day weekend, get ready for crowded roads and airports. triple a projects nearly 44 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home, just under the all time record set in

camera, you know, do you take this woman? no, no, i don't actually i don't really like her anymore. i don't like her like that. don't you can still be friends, though. >> here's a live look outside our walnut creek camera. we are seeing some breaks in the cloud cover inland for sunshine pretty quickly this morning, but around the bay shoreline and certainly along the coast, it is very cloudy out there. but speaking of that sun, it's now rising before 6 a.m. it occurred at 559 this morning and it will stay that way through mid-july. the days are getting longer. we're getting more daylight. as we head towards the summer solstice, you will find that sun rising earlier and earlier over the next couple of weeks, highs. we have a wide range of temperatures. we have that typical spread. we see in may where the coast is cool in the upper 50s. for half moon bay downtown. a little bit warmer today compared to yesterday in the mid 60s, but it's warmer in oakland, hitting 70 for a daytime high. and those numbers jump as you head inland. walnut creek in the low 80s. antioch a high of 84 degrees later on this afternoon. here's a look at your

weather, wellness today. air quality is good to moderate pollen levels, particularly grass, and tree pollen is still high in that uv index is an eight out of an 11. here's the forecast as we break it down throughout the regions inland. we're in the low to mid 80s with lots of sunshine today around the bay shoreline. we have clouds right now giving way to brighter conditions with those numbers in the upper 60s and lower 70s by the afternoon. but along the coast we stay pretty cloudy and temperatures are cool in the 50s that onshore flow will pick up a bit. here's that wind coming off that cool ocean water strongest over the city and through the delta. we'll find those winds close to 20 to 25mph at times highs. today we'll keep the coastline cool in the 50s and 60s. heading inland will go into the 70s and 80s, but lakeport and ukiah quite hot today in the low 90s to oracle park tonight. game three. the dodgers very similar to yesterday and the day before. temperatures slowly cooling through the 50s by the ninth inning. overnight tonight we'll have those temperatures bottoming out in the 40s and the

a thousand homes this week. it will impact people who have safe co-insurance, a subsidiary of liberty mutual. the chronicle obtained filings with the california department of insurance. it shows rates could rise an average of 10.5. safeco blames inflation on and increase lost costs. a spokesperson tells the newspaper the hike takes effect this friday, though affected policyholders will not see it until their next renewal date. >> tesla has announced another major round of layoffs hitting the bay area. state records show. the company is cutting 600 positions between facilities in fremont and offices in palo alto, and that's on top of the

more than 20 more than 2700 jobs that it slashed just a few weeks back. tesla is reducing its overall workforce by 10. the latest round of layoffs starts june 20th. another store is set to leave the san francisco center. american eagle is planning to close its mall location in july. last year, the retailer sued the former owners of the mall, claiming they allowed crime to escalate. american eagle will close permanently july 12th. >> amid all the store closings we've been reporting on throughout the city, one neighborhood is welcoming a new grocery store. it's a trader joe's. it's opening this friday at laguna and fulton and hayes valley. more than 70 crew members will be hired from surrounding neighborhoods. here's a peek at what it will look like. they are still taking job applications through the website trader joe's began in 1967, in la and has expanded to nearly 450 stores in 42 states. a united call to address the overdose crisis in san francisco next, at 630, how the public health department is now responding. >> and yesterday we showed you

best and expect the worst. this is what we got. we're hoping for sunshine out there today. here's a live look from our east bay hills. camera really paints the picture really well. this morning we have that low level stratus. our marine layer is here with us. that sunshine is up though. we'll get that sunshine breaking out throughout the morning and the afternoon is setting up to be quite lovely. temperatures right now across the board. we are widespread in the 50s 55 right now in san jose. good morning. we're down to 52, though in danville, 57 in palo alto. it's a similar story in the north bay, but areas like calistoga and clear lake a little bit warmer currently in the 60s. look at the forecast first along the coast. it's pretty cloudy today, very similar to the past couple of days. you dress in layers along the coast. we'll have those temperatures pretty much steadily staying in the 50s the next 24 hours. now around the bay shoreline. you need the jacket right now, but you can get rid of it this afternoon. very similar to yesterday where we get that sunshine back here later on today by 4 p.m, temperatures and a lot of areas around the bay shoreline in the low 70s inland, we have warm numbers. it's clear out there

announcing the conference today, the news conference the group backing price in the recall also supported that date. they said it will provide more time to inform voters, quote, with the facts. the announcement about the recall election comes amid a growing online feud between congressman eric swalwell and an ex account that's run by pamela price's campaign staff. swalwell is a former alameda county prosecutor who was hired by price's predecessor. now, he recently posted about the armed robbery of a mail carrier in dublin, saying current prosecutors are, quote, soft on crime. price's campaign responded, pointing out that mail carriers have faced robberies for a number of years and then accusing swalwell of only beginning to care after the first black woman was elected district attorney. >> no more cuts. that is the message from the san francisco sheriff. mayor london breed is asking all city departments to consider a 10% spending cut for the next fiscal year, but sheriff paul miyamoto says his department is already critically

short staffed, with vacancies for 195 sworn deputies. the sheriff went before the board of supervisors yesterday. he detailed injuries to his deputies and mental and physical toll because of their understaffing. there's also a growing inmate population. >> over the course of a year, we've seen about a 36% increase. we've made continuous efforts to hire. >> the mayor's office says public safety remains a top priority in this next budget cycle. more details will be shared when the budget is ready at the end of this month. an urgent call for the city of san francisco to do more to address the overdose crisis. >> yesterday, doctors and public health experts gathered outside the city morgue to remember the 3026 lives lost to overdoses in san francisco since january of 2020. speakers say the deaths highlight the failures in public policy related to substance abuse. >> it highlights that we are not listening to our public, to our policy experts, our doctors, and

we're not following the accepted uh- 2022 overdose plan. >> the 2022 overdose plan, called for increased access to treatment, social support and improved community conditions in which drug use occurs. the public health department issued a statement saying the loss of any lives from drug abuse drug use is unacceptable, adding that it, quote, making strides in the implementation of the overdose prevention plan and working aggressively to make treatment for substance use disorders more accessible in san francisco, a group of eight tiktok content creators filed a lawsuit against the federal government to block a potential ban of the app. >> the suit argues that the new law threatens free expression. tiktok is paying for the group's legal fees and has filed its own lawsuit. legislation passed last month bans a video app in the u.s. unless it gets sold in the next 12 months. this is in response to concerns tiktok's ties to china could expose americans personal information

to the chinese government. new trouble for boeing this morning. the justice department is accusing the company of violating the terms of a settlement deal. amanda, we're learning this is related to the company's 737 max. >> now, reggie, the settlement was made after two deadly crashes of 737 max passenger jets that happened back in 2018 and 2019. hundreds of people died in those incidents. the deal allowed for boeing to avoid criminal prosecution. in exchange, the company was required to follow a certain set of safety protocols and regulations. however, a new letter from the justice department claims the company failed to follow those guidelines. the doj now says boeing is subject to prosecution . >> boeing is one of the largest and most powerful companies in the united states. it supports tens of thousands of jobs across the country. it supplies our military with planes and different weapon systems. but on the flip side, the families who lost people in those two crashes, they want justice. >> the agency has not yet made a

a crash in oakland. westbound 88 is blocking the offramp of grand avenue. you can see some of these issues across the bay bridge. that's going to be the really big problem for people coming into the city this morning. you'll see that big rig on its side. let's get to that picture there. there is no estimated time of reopening. it will impact your approach to the bay bridge, and you could see impacts to the east shore freeway. nimitz freeway commuters take westbound 580 to get around it, but once you get past that mess, it's still slow into the city with stop and go traffic across the bridge this morning. so something to keep in mind. we'll keep our eye on it for you. >> thanks, amanda. and the south bay water regulators are proposing a new ordinance to ban camping along creeks and waterfronts in santa clara
