deputies, as well as the mental and physical toll of being understaffed. >> now, all of this comes as the mayor calls for drastic 10% budget cuts to all departments. >> abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn has more give you a flavor of what it is to be in our jail system. sheriff paul miyamoto addresses the san francisco board of supervisors about the recent violence at the jails and the growing inmate population over the course of a year, we've seen about a 36% increase in april, san francisco's main jail and its facility in san bruno were put on lockdown while authorities investigated recent inmate attacks on deputies. the sheriff says deputies suffered broken bones, eye injuries and bite wounds. mayor london breed is asking all city departments to consider a 10% spending cut for the next fiscal year, but sheriff miyamoto says his department is already critically short staffed, with vacancies for 195 sworn deputies. >> we've made continuous efforts to hire. >> some deputies say they are mentally and physically

exhausted and fights, drug use and assaults on staff have increased. >> i think the sheriff needs to prioritize increasing staffing because that's what prevents the lockdowns. that's what reduces and deters fights. prisoner on prisoner fights. that's what prevents our deputies from being attacked. >> i would agree with the sheriff's department that they don't necessarily need to provide the same level of reductions as the police department. most certainly the police department's budget is overbloated, and there are things that we need to do around public safety that don't just involve law enforcement. >> the mayor wasn't available for comment, but her office says that public safety remains a top priority for the mayor in this next budget cycle, and more details will be shared when the budget is ready at the end of the month in san francisco, suzanne phan, abc seven news. two people are in custody after a robbery that resulted in a chase and crash in san francisco . take a look at the aftermath in the richmond district. police say the suspects robbed a woman

near 26th and balboa street and got away in a car. officers gave chase, but it ended because of safety concerns. however, the suspects got into a crash at cabrillo street and eighth avenue and slammed into a house. neighbors then sprang into action. >> i wanted to make sure was everybody okay at the time we weren't suspecting that there was any kind of nefarious action. jump two and got to about the corner here, and they saw two kids jump out and they ran in opposite directions. i gave minimal chase to the one kid, because i, seemed that he had a weapon on him. so i turned around and i felt it was more important to see if the woman in the blue mini was okay. >> witnesses say officers tracked down the suspects a short time later. >> an urgent call tonight for the city of san francisco to do more to address the overdose crisis. doctors and public health experts were among those who gathered outside the city morgue today to remember the 3026 lives lost to overdoses in the city since january 2020, speakers say the deaths

highlight the failures in public policy related to substance abuse. >> it highlights that we are not listening to our public, to our policy experts, our doctors and we're not following the accepted uh- 2022 overdose plan that 2022 overdose plan called for increased access to treatment, social support and improved community conditions in which drug users drug use rather occurs. >> the public health department issued a statement saying the loss of any lives from drug use is unacceptable, adding that its quote, making strides in the implementation of the overdose prevention plan and working aggressively to make treatment for substance use disorders more accessible in san francisco, governor newsom says solving the mental health and homelessness crisis deserves a sense of urgency and accountability. >> today, he announced the state is fast tracking funding to new and existing projects. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey explains when cities and counties will see the help so

many desperately need. >> proposition one represents a commitment from the state to expand services to help the most vulnerable and their families. mental health services like those offered here at the cordilleras mental health center in redwood city. they've made a major difference in serving lee's son. >> i wish every county had available for mentally ill clients what this county has available. >> governor gavin newsom hopes that will be the case very soon. during a visit to this mental health center tuesday, newsom saw the benefits prop one can offer many more across the state and to get that help to those who need it most in order to curb the mental health and homelessness crisis, the state will be funding projects like this much sooner than originally thought. a two year process. >> we are collapsing this just approved bond. the first $3.3 billion will be going out in july, and newsom says the state wants to approve funding requests fast because the crisis needs a sense of urgency. >> the governor announced a new

website as well. mental health ca.gov, a one stop source for people in need of support and information about the state's behavioral health transformation. five years ago, the state had no strategy for mental health. now, with so much available to counties and cities, newsom wants to see accountability and progress. >> it's time to do your job. it's time to get things done. you ask for these reforms. we've provided them. now it's time to deliver. >> like newsom says, san mateo county has already ahead of the curve when it comes to homelessness solutions and mental health resources. county executive mike kelly says san mateo will now become one of the first to get care court up and running by july 1st part of a commitment to reimagine how california handles the mental health system and to the families of those with mental health issues. >> i want you to know help is on the way. >> governor newsom hopes the commitment here accelerates efforts in other counties to get things done and help the most. people in san mateo county dustin dorsey, abc seven news. >> to alameda county now, where

happening this moment, the board of supervisors is holding a special meeting in which they will likely vote to set a date for a recall election of alameda county district attorney pamela price, who has been quite embattled lately. abc seven news reporter anser hassan is live with the story tonight. unser >> dan. good evening. the meeting got underway about an hour ago, less than an hour ago. they're getting ready for public comment, which may take a while since there's a long list of speakers on both sides. what the board can do tonight is set a vote to on the special election could happen as early as august 13th. a special election would cost between 15 and $20 million of taxpayer money. or they can combine the recall election with november's general election. the group safe or save alameda county for everyone is leading the recall effort. one of its main issues is their claim that da price, who's only been in office for less than a year and a half, has not been tough on crime. >> unfortunately, her ideology is actually the driving force and, you know, having all these

serious crimes happening against many of our citizens, our seniors, our children, impacting directly to many, many working families, people are suffering. >> those who support da price point out that the recall campaign often rely on just oakland crime statistics, which do not represent what is happening in all of alameda county, including cities like fremont, dublin or livermore. they're concerned about the millions of dollars needed for this special election, which brings a lot of concern where they will find a $20 million necessary for the standalone election. >> and i think alameda county residents should be concerned that this will directly impact services for us all. >> now, the burke county voters, registrar of voters told the board that they are recommending that they combine the two elections because they need time to ramp up for a special election. i want to add, we did

reach out to the alameda county district attorney's office. they did not return requests for comment. we'll keep you updated once the decision is made. reporting live on. >> all right. unser. thank you so much. a bay area man accused of sexually assaulting a college student. and later sending her a message on social media that read, quote, so i raped you was taken into custody in france. investigators say ian cleary sneaked into the woman's dorm room at gettysburg college in 2013 and attacked her while she texted friends for help. pennsylvania authorities issued a warrant for the saratoga native in 2021. cleary is awaiting extradition. >> coming up, we're monitoring the situation at the university of san francisco, where pro-palestinian protesters were given a 3 p.m. deadline to end their demonstration, but so far the students have not moved. plus doctors from the bay area trapped in gaza. >> we'll hear from their families and the effort to get them home safely. abc sev

what's happening. area of low pressure off the southern california coast is keeping the activity over the sierra going. we've had thunderstorms this afternoon, but this area of high pressure is going to nudge in. and as it does tomorrow, temperatures are going to rise just a little bit. here's a closer view. just south of tahoe we are seeing those thunderstorms. they are being accompanied by rain fortunately, which is a good thing. now we are looking at the marine layer right near the coast. it's already started to push across parts of the bay thanks to the onshore winds right now gusting to 36 at oakland. so do expect this as you're looking from our sfo camera to make its move 57 in the city right now oakland you're at 60 degrees our warmest spots today only making it up into the low 80s. so far 73 in san jose. here's a live view from santa cruz camera where we're seeing gray skies and temperatures in the 60s for petaluma and napa. 70s though santa rosa, fairfield and concord coast to 80 degrees in livermore, hitting 80 right now. a live view from emeryville camera you can see san francisco

kind of shrouded in some fog tonight. coastal fog spreads tomorrow a little warmer bay and inland and the rest of the week we are talking about breezy conditions with a gradual cooling trend tonight. if you do want to step out, maybe run some errands this evening around 620. still pretty mild inland with the sun shining in the 70s but 50s coast side. so depending on where you are, you're going to need a jacket. if you're near the coastline later on tonight, you will notice a pretty good push of the marine air heading into 11 p.m. and those temperatures falling tomorrow morning. we start out with gray skies, even some spotty drizzle. certainly possible by noontime. the sun's out away from the coast and those temperatures are rising by the 4:00 hour. we're already seeing those 80s inland 50s along the coast. your morning temperatures 40s and 50s . watch out. there may be some damp areas due to some drizzle tomorrow afternoon. a beautiful day, especially for those fog lovers who enjoyed this fog that surround around this time of year. we're looking at 50s coast side. if you love the sunshine,

just head inland low to mid 80s there. the accuweather seven day forecast. we're going to bump up the temperatures for a day. after that, those temperatures will be sliding a few degrees each and every day. so it's not going to be a big change, but just a gradual cooling trend taking us into the weekend. ama and dan lovely weather overall for this time of year though. >> okay thank you sandhya. >> matthew mcconaughey is going to star in a film about the deadliest wildfire in california's history. that's the camp fire. the movie is being shot in new mexico and is being produced by jamie lee curtis. it's based on some of the stories from the book paradise one town's struggle to survive an american wildfire. the film, called the lost bus, will focus on a bus driver and a teacher who helped steer a bus full of children to safety. 85 people died in the 2018 wildfire that tore through paradise in butte county. >> still ahead, a new trader joe's location is opening soon in san francisco.
