the trip. and the governor says he's come up with a way to help women in arizona get abortions here in california, air and ferry service between san francisco and sausalito is suspended indefinitely. the pier problem that's left the boats docked. this early edition of abc seven news starts right now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> it's a business trip. that could mean an economic boost for san francisco. the mayor just back from china, talks agenda and accomplishments, including bringing pandas to the city. hi there. thanks for joining us for this early edition of abc seven news. due to american idol, i'm dionne lim. her agenda was lengthy and hopes were high for san francisco mayor. london breeds trip to china. so how did it go? abc seven news reporter cornell bernard was there as the mayor returned this afternoon. he's live for us right now from sfo with the highlights from her trip and details on panda watch.

cornell. >> yeah, you guessed it, dion. you know, the mayor has returned to san francisco just a few hours ago, causing pandemonium. i guess you would have to say here at the airport. she did make some economic strides in china. but of course, the real news bringing china and bringing pandas and signing a deal to bring those animals to san francisco zoo. >> it's definitely great to be home mayor. >> london breed back in san francisco with news about her weeklong trip to china. >> we were truly successful in our trip. we had numerous meetings with government officials, with airlines, and with business leaders. we held a business forum of people who have interest in not only doing business in san francisco, but investing in san francisco. >> but breed said the highlight of the trip had nothing to do with business. just check out her luggage and of course, what everyone is truly excited about. pandas mayor breed signing an agreement with chinese wildlife officials to bring pandas to the

san francisco zoo as soon as early next year. >> we expect a pair of pandas and they are hopefully anticipated to come as soon as we're able to raise the resources, do all the permitting, we are prepared to receive them so that when they do come to san francisco, they're environment, their food, their support will allow for them to be healthy and to thrive. >> millions of dollars in private donations need to be raised to build an enclosure for the pandas at the zoo. the last time pandas were in san francisco was the 1980s. thousands lined up to see them. mayor breed making this visit to see pandas in china up close, she says it was a next level experience. >> i had a chance to go to the shanghai wildlife park, and it was the first time i actually saw a panda in person, and it was was amazing. it was amazing

to see them walk, to eat, to sit up, to pick up things with their hands and. >> yeah, the mayor says still a lot of details to be worked out and a lot of money to be raised before those pandas actually do come to san francisco as early as perhaps january or february of next year. mayor says she also met with the head of several airlines in china to help secure more flights between san francisco and chinese routes. more to come on that. we're live at san francisco international, cornell, bernard, abc seven news. >> it is indeed a start. all right, cornell, many thanks to you. governor gavin newsom said today he'll introduce a bill intended to make abortion more available as an option to women in arizona. he announced on msnbc's inside with jen psaki that the proposal would offer arizona abortion providers an expedited way to get a california license to perform the procedure for their patients. newsom plans to introduce that bill this week if

it passes. newsom hopes it would take 5 to 10 days for arizona providers to get approved in california. newsom's move is in response to the arizona supreme court's recent decision to uphold an 1864 law that criminalizes abortion unless a woman's life is at risk. developing news praise today for speaker mike johnson amid calls for some lawmakers in washington to oust him for allowing votes on a $95 billion foreign aid package, johnson succeeded in getting that bill passed yesterday. now, hardline republicans are threatening to force a vote to remove him as house leader. on abc news this week, texas republican michael mccaul said johnson showed courage while south bay congressman ro khanna says he would vote to support johnson if republicans tried to remove him. >> i'm a progressive democrat, and i think you would have a few progressive democrats doing that, and i disagree with speaker johnson on many issues and have been very critical of

him. but he did the right thing here, and he deserves to keep his job. >> georgia republican congresswoman marjorie taylor greene has proposed, but not yet acted, on, a motion to vacate the speakership over his support of the foreign aid bills and in particular, the nearly $61 billion in aid to ukraine. opening statements in former president donald trump's hush money trial are set to begin tomorrow. a 12 person jury has been sworn in and seated. they'll have to decide if trump is guilty of falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments to adult film actress stormy daniels. trump has pleaded not guilty and has been outspoken about the case. this is the first time a former us president has been tried in a criminal case. also tomorrow, the supreme court will consider the biggest case on homelessness in more than 40 years. the court will hear arguments on whether people can be punished for sleeping outdoors. the town of grants pass, oregon, is suing for the right to ticket people who sleep on the street when

they have nowhere else to go. appeals courts say that is cruel and unusual punishment. california leaders want more freedom to clear encampments, but homeless advocates say sweeps won't solve the problem. the supreme court decision is expected by the end of june. the latest now on a story we've been following all weekend, a 21 mile stretch of a north bay highway is expected to be back open by 4 a.m. highway 37 from vallejo to sears point has been shut down since friday night. for a repaving project, you can see the detour there highlighted in green on the map on your right. caltrans says the roadwork is on schedule almost 5000 tons of asphalt and over 300 trucks were part of this weekend's project. all of it caused significant traffic delays yesterday in wine country. caltrans says the worst backup was at 2 p.m. yesterday. repavement work is scheduled to continue over the next four weekends. detours are posted. the sausalito pier remains

closed, so there is no ferry service to san francisco. so all of this after an issue requiring immediate attention, was discovered during a routine inspection on friday. today we spotted a large crane and a barge ready to do the work. a city council member says they can't do any work, though, until low tide that is just before five. meantime golden gate ferry service is suspended until the repairs can be made. the change confused visitors at the dock. >> i was originally planning to ride a ferry from san francisco to here and then back, so luckily we drove here. so yeah, i guess we're okay for now. >> busses are replacing the ferries. there's no word on when the pier will reopen, but city leaders are hoping ferry service will resume early this week. also happening today a grand opening for snowy valleys pricey public toilet. the initial $1.7 million cost shocked even the most skeptical san franciscans. it came down significantly, though, thanks to donations from

two out of state companies. the toilet bowl ceremony marks the new chapter in the bathroom saga . residents and visitors now have a place to go in snowy valley town square. >> you know, this made world news, so it was time to take back the narrative. and if people are making fun of us, we'll just make fun of us, too. >> okay, with that cupcake? as you see, there were toilet related treats for the occasion. those balloons uh- toilet tree for people to decorate. even rec and parks say they spent $300,000. all said and done, that leaves the city with 1.4 million for a similar project in bernal heights, an unusual sight had people staring today at an east bay beach. please keep distance. >> please keep distance. >> a dead whale washed ashore. what we know about the marine mammal and breathtaking moments captured by witnesses. flames consumed a car and witnesses

crowd of onlookers this morning. officials believe it's an adult young female gray whale that's estimated to be 40ft long. this is not the same whale that was recently discovered entangled in fishing net near daly city. >> this is the time of year where gray whales are heading back to alaska from mexico. so we have we expect to see, a gray whale or two on their transit back and sometimes they die. and when we see them on shore, we want to try and figure out why that's the best way to, advocate and conserve them. >> the coast guard and army corps of engineers will help tow the carcass to angel island state park to determine the cause of death, an illegal activity linked to the bay area appears to be spreading fast yeah, this isn't the bay area, though. this is what it sounded like on the streets of boston. the abc affiliate there is reporting this is the first

sideshow they've seen in the city. there were no injuries reported. and take a look at some really heart racing moments captured by a passer by in saint paul, minnesota. good samaritans and a state worker helped rescue a driver from a burning vehicle on an interstate last thursday. video of the drama is now making rounds on social media. wow! you can see how urgently everyone is moving the suv had drifted off the road, struck a light pole, then a guardrail, then catching fire. as the flames grow more intense, one man was able to break the suv's window, allowing the group to pull the driver out feet first. he was taken to the hospital for evaluation but was not hurt. san francisco celebrated earth day at a new venue in bayview hunters point. today. the new farm showcases native plants, edible plants and sustainable living. today marked a coming together to enjoy food, music and to inspire future generations. organizers are trying to raise environmental awareness with those groups,

summer like 65 degrees in san francisco right now, 71 oakland. we've got mid 70s at palo alto and hayward, 80 at san jose and 59 at half moon bay. bright blue sky for the most part out over the bay as you look down from mount tam 79 right now in santa rosa, 73 petaluma, napa 75. mid 80s or low to mid 80s at fairfield, concord and livermore and looking out over san francisco on this sunny day. these are our forecast headlines . we have one more day of this almost summer like warmth. then the middle of the week it'll be turning sharply cooler and by the end of the week we'll have a few clouds, a few more clouds coming into the picture, and a slight chance of some showers. here's the forecast animation taking us through the evening and overnight hours. notice a few high clouds passing through a wide area of clearing. then in the early wee morning hours, a few more high clouds. but we will start the day even with those high clouds. with bright skies that will give way to increasingly sunny skies later in the day. overnight, low temperatures under those high clouds will be mainly in the low

to mid 50s. it's going to be really mild overnight. no one dropping into the 40s tonight, a low of 57 in antioch, 56 at san jose. so very mild all around the bay area. and then again tomorrow. another warm day, maybe not quite so warm as today was, but we'll see low 80s for sure in our inland areas and mid to upper 70s around the bay shoreline. but look ahead. what happens tuesday? a 10 degrees or more drop in temperatures as that cooler pattern settles in. same thing on wednesday about the same range then even a little bit cooler on thursday. so changes are coming our way. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. breezy and cooler on tuesday. cooling continues on wednesday. we'll see clouds increasing then and on thursday. that chance of showers is on friday. at the moment it doesn't look like we're going to get much rain out of this system, but there could be at least some sprinkles. then it'll be sunnier and milder going into next weekend. >> with nearly the entire nl west starting slow out of the gate, the giants in great position to move up in the

we'll get a little perspective on that gray whale that washed up in alameda. the threats these marine mammals are facing, plus the best time to see the lyrid meteor shower and what else in the night sky could interfere with a good view. but finally, now, actor kevin bacon made it back to visit the iconic footloose film location in salt lake city, utah, before its demolition. the actor showed up at payson high school just in time for the final prom night, and the movie's 40th anniversary. look at him strutting in there. the school is set to relocate at the end of the school year. students tried to get him to make an appearance for more than a year. footloose starred bacon as a teen who moves to a small town that forbids dancing. bacon called the film and the school a big part of his life. how exciting for those kids it is.
