5:06 am
of, potholes. >> part of the process is we're going to be grinding and repaving. caltrans says a 21 mile stretch of 37 from solano to sonoma counties is getting new asphalt. >> they say it's a challenging job on a two lane road. >> having a 55 hour closure allows our crews to stage safely . we be able to work on, like you said, that limited space and maneuver. so, it's very beneficial for us to be able to do so. and that is the limition this weekend. >> the closure from 9 p.m. friday to 5 a.m. monday will impact westbound lanes of 37 from vallejo to sears point. caltrans suggests detours through wine country. >> it is going to be a long detour, so please plan ahead with plenty of time. >> ramsgate winery in the sonoma valley posting this message to visitors on its instagram page about the 37 construction, you do not want to miss the sonoma speed tour. >> april 19th through the 21st sonoma raceway, hosting this muscle car event. >> over the weekend, ticket holders have been notified about
5:07 am

5:08 am
punishment. governor gavin newsom and san francisco mayor london breed are among the california leaders, asking the supreme court to give them more freedom to clear encampments. advocates like jennifer friedenbach says sweeps will not solve the problem. >> we don't want to see cities using police and uh- using criminalization and jail as a way to punish homeless people for being homeless. >> the supreme court's decision is expected by the end of june. a big change is coming to the annual 420 celebration at golden gate park today. the san francisco rec and parks department is holding a field day with volleyball and kickball tournaments instead of the usual hippie hill event. it was canceled because of financial constraint. that likely won't stop people who still want to celebrate cannabis culture. >> i think it's an opportunity for to get back to the noncommercial roots of enjoyment of cannabis, and i hope that
5:09 am
many people come out who might not have come to a big commercial sponsored event and make a day of it and have a picnic with their families and pass around a couple joints here on hippie hill in anticipation of the crowds, the psychedelic church of ambrosia is teaming up with nonprofits to send safety staff portable toilets and a medical tent to the park. >> all right, lisa, how's it looking outside? >> all right. well, pretty good so far. we are on the cool side with the low clouds and fog temperatures in the low 50s here in san francisco. it was just 61 yesterday. the winds are going to kick up throughout the afternoon in the city along the coast. but we'll still manage some very comfortable highs from the 60s to even upper 70s across the bay. stay tuned to have the forecast for the warmest days of the week. and then the cool down coming up lisa, thank you. >> also ahead, a rare saturday vote happening in the house today. the controversial bill that could jeopardize speaker mike johnson's position. plus san francisco is getting giant pandas. the timeline for the

welcome back. here's a live look from our emeryville camera, looking towards the city light traffic this morning. it's 511. today will be the last run for bart's legacy trains. the cars that have been running since bart first opened its doors to passengers back in 1972. the transit agency is holding a celebration at macarthur station in oakland with food, activities as well as a bart merchandise pop up. this marks the end of the transition to bart's so-called fleet of the future. those more modern cars have been phased in now. there are now more than 700 of them. as for the legacy cars, at least three of them are headed to a museum in suisun city. across the bay area. several cities have been added to the state's pro housing designation. governor newsom announced that berkeley, pinole, richmond and fairfield are
5:13 am
joining 42 other cities honored mo housing development. theage list includes a total o16 bay area cities. the designation comes with financial incentives and other resources to lp speed housing production. the state is also fang a major housing shortage and has set a goal for 2.5 million new homes by 2030. a new exhibit at the asian art museum in san francisco features artwork never seen before in the u.s. the exhibit is called phoenix kingdoms. it has more than 100 ancient chinese artwork, including elaborate bronze vessels, lacquerware, and textiles from 2000 years ago, all created at the dawn of china's bronze age. they were made by two mysterious kingdoms in the yangtze river valley before they were conquered by china's first emperor. among the treasures is the world's first refrigerator, the world's first ice box, made of bronzes. >> imagine people in china 2500
5:14 am
years ago drinking chilled wine. >> many of the pieces in the exhibit have never been on display before, even in china. phoenix kingdoms runs until july 22nd at the asian art museum. also happening today in the north bay, a free family event at the novato library. it's called spring fiesta. organizers say there will be music, dancing, ice cream and tacos. the learning bus will also be there. everyone is invited. the event goes from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the novato library on novato boulevard. a unique partnership between the presidio trust and the california academy of sciences is bringing a lost part of the bay area natural environment back to life. it's a melding of science and conservation that's about to take flight. abc seven news anchor dan ashley has the details. >> and if you look through that, you can see the wings. not many butterflies get the celebrity treatment, but then again, this bunch is about to make history.
5:15 am
>> turning the clock back nearly a century in san francisco's presidio, durrell capon is a senior research fellow at the california academy of sciences. he says the butterflies will replace a long lost species called the xerces blue, that went extinct in the 1940s. >> syracuse blue was a beautiful blue butterfly that was restricted to the dune habitat from fort funston to baker beach. >> that was before the west side of san francisco transformed from sand dunes to development, wiping out their habitat. but ecologist lou stringer says the presidio has spent decades restoring the native dunes around the former army post, including butterfly friendly plants like the edible deerweed. >> if we didn't have this habitat, we wouldn't have the plant and we wouldn't have the ability to bring back the species that was lost to san francisco. >> so with butterflies in tow, the team hit the trail. but they say the scientific part of the journey actually began much earlier in the sand dunes of
5:16 am
monterey. that's where biologists from the academy were able to identify the closest living relative to the extinct blue sources, combining sophisticated genetics with matching samples from their own collection. the results pointed to a species known as the silvery blue. >> in fact, we sequenced the complete genome of three different subtypes of the silvery blue butterflies so we could say which one was closer. just push it right in there and with a delicate touch, wildlife ecologist phoebe parker shams helped settle the presidio's newest residents into their adopted home. >> oh my gosh, look at it, look. oh, look at that already. it already jumped out, placing them underneath a protective net to let them get acclimated and even giving them a quick drop of gatorade for hydration. >> and they get a sense of this is good habitat. and then they stay, hopefully stay put, sort of get the way worked into the plant, hopefully lay some eggs, on those plants. >> for the presidio, it's the latest in a string of native reintroductions, ranging from
5:17 am
coyotes to pond turtles to the western fence lizard. and they believe partnering with the academy of sciences could offer new opportunities. >> absolutely. it's a place of experimentation and innovation around conservation in the 21st century, a living lab with a potential to bring native environments back to life in san francisco. >> dan ashley, abc seven news. >> the teams will also be using a citizen science platform called inaturalist. it also helps volunteers track those butterflies. pretty neat. well, national parks week kicks off today, and to celebrate entry fees to all national parks are waived for the day. many parks are already free, like the point reyes or the presidio, but others like yosemite, kings canyon and sequoia national parks are free for the entire day. other sites like muir woods , require a reservation, and alcatraz also requires a ferry ticket to get to the island. and yes, we can say it, no rain in
5:18 am
the forecast, at least for this weekend. lisa, i know you're tracking everything we need to know, but it feels good to finally say that. >> yes, i was telling you, i was in southern california where it poured, so didn't escape it down there either. it follows you? >> yeah, exactly. >> but we're definitely looking at some really nice weather over the weekend. it will get warmer if you like the warmer days. that's on sunday. holding on monday, but low clouds and fog to start off this morning. sun coming up at 627, sets at 750. that's 13 hours and 24 minutes of daylight. and look at live doppler seven, where all of california is pretty quiet right now. we have numbers in a narrow range from the upper 40s up in cloverdale. well, cloverdale, 5249, santa rosa, saint helena, sonoma. and then we've got those low 50s in oakland, 49 in fremont, though, and a look outside emeryville. they're mostly cloudy this morning. and as we go through the 8:00 hour, those clouds begin to peel back.
5:19 am
and then by 9:00, partly sunny over the weekend, we've got sunshine and spring warmth with the warmest day of the weekend will be tomorrow and even the entire week. even though we're going to hold on to that warmth on monday, we'll get some cooling along the coast for your monday, and then we'll look for temperatures to continue to drop off after we peak on sunday and monday, and some neighborhoods with perhaps even some rain showers, light rain showers by next friday. here's a look at the low clouds and the fog early this morning. then we're left with sunny conditions for your saturday afternoon. and then as high pressure builds, we have less in the way of that marine influence for your sunday. even at the coast. and the winds will be lighter. so as a result, the warmest day certainly will be tomorrow. here's a look at the winds that will continue to pick up throughout the day today, especially at the coast, 25 to 35 miles an hour and inside the bay. not too bad, but we'll call it breezy. about 10 to 15 miles an hour. and then this is a look at sunday how the winds will really be much lighter out there
5:20 am
. if you are headed to at&t park, we've got the diamondback in town with temperatures in the low 60s. and notice not a big warm up. we've got those breezy winds, but it will be bright out there with temperatures in around the mid 60s. by that ninth inning. as for your sunday, here come the red colors from the sacramento valley into the inland valleys, and that takes us up into the 80s. so certainly a warm afternoon, mid 70s for the bay shore. and looking at those 60s at the coast by monday, notice the warmth still holding inland. but typical of a cool down. we get that cooler breeze at the shoreline and then look at how dramatic it is for your tuesday. with temperatures a lot cooler out there and even below average as for your highs today, look for temperatures from the upper 60s. san mateo 72, in palo alto, look for those upper 70s, maybe a stray 80 degree temperature there inland. so a beautiful day. but it will take some time. just a couple of hours throughout the morning hours for
5:21 am
the clouds to scatter on out. 67 will make for a warmer day in san francisco and the accuweather seven day forecast. we've got a great start. then looking at a sunny afternoon, the warmth is really with us for your sunday. the coast will even come up a few degrees and then by monday we will still be warm inland. but you'll feel the breeze if you're here in the city and then the rest of the week looking cooler. and then by friday could bring in a few light showers. nothing like last weekend though i was going to say. >> there it is, we said not this weekend. yeah, but 80 for tomorrow? yeah. very warm. nice. thanks lisa. well, just ahead, bay area native huey lewis is putting his hit songs on the big stage and plenty of his star studded friends came out
