diplomacy seems to be working the news from san francisco mayor london breed about pandas returning to san francisco. it's happening. the pandas are coming. good morning. on this friday, april 19th. >> yes. before we get to drew with weather, we want to check in with amanda for a traffic alert. yeah, definitely. >> in the east bay, commuters there be aware there is a sig alert in pleasanton impacting traffic this morning. it's a solo car crash on southbound 680 before castlewood drive. emergency crews are on scene and they're planning to reopen at six this morning. drew, let's check in with you. >> yeah. thanks, amanda. get ready for a cooler day today. we'll see. temperatures more in the 60s and 70s instead of the 70s and 80s like we had for the past couple of days. a live look outside from the exploratorium camera. we are dealing with some cloud cover this morning. we'll have partly to mostly cloudy skies early on, giving way to brighter conditions as we head throughout the afternoon. temperatures currently were mainly in the 40s and 50s, 48 in san rafael this morning, 48 in danville are at 55 in hayward

and napa, coming in at 50 degrees. so we take a look at the day planner today. it's partly sunny early on here, and then we'll find brighter skies. our marine layer is overhead. currently we have a little bit of coastal drizzle this morning. and then you could see by 4 p.m. it is a cooler afternoon by about 5 or 7 degrees compared to yesterday. we'll be in the upper 50s along the coast, 60s around the bay shoreline inland will stay in the mid 70s instead of the low 80s like the past couple of days. so a cooler high of 63 in the city will go to 67. in oakland, 76 in san jose, 74 in santa rosa, hit about 75 in concord. we'll preview that weekend forecast in seven minutes. reggie. >> thank you. drew. developing news out of the middle east. overnight, israel carried out a strike on iran. that military move is in retaliation for iran's direct attack on israel last weekend, when it launched more than 300 drone missiles. a man is at the live desk. what do we know? this morning, reg, at least one missile struck a facility inside iran early this morning, local time. >> there have been no reports of

casualties or the exact nature of this facility. however, iranian media is reporting it hit a city in central iran about 200 miles from tehran. iranian media also reports at least one explosion where the missile landed. that location is known to have heavy military equipment and personnel on the site. commercial airliners have since been diverted from the area. >> there is an international airfield in that area. there are military or air force bases in that area, as well as possible iranian nuclear assets, as well. >> the retaliation comes five days after iran launched that unprecedented historic load of missiles, drones and ballistic missiles against israel. israeli forces say 99% of them were knocked out of the sky. now, that attack was in retaliation from an israeli strike that killed some top generals in syria. the white house urged israel to show restraint and said overnight it got last minute information about the attack. there's no word on how

after 26 year old mario gonzalez died in custody. >> alameda police officers are facing charges. >> we thought that it was important to inform the public about this very important case, alameda county district attorney pamela price pledged to reexamine the case when she first took office. eric mckinley, james fisher and cameron lee leahy have each been charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter, price reversing the decision of her predecessor, nancy o'malley, who cleared the officers of any criminal wrongdoing. >> she signed off on a final report two years ago, stating in part, we conclude that the officer's decision to detain and arrest mr. gonzalez and their subsequent use of force was objectively reasonable, considering the agency's policies. the totality of the circumstances, and the officer's stated rationale. district attorney price declined to confirm whether new evidence was brought in to review, and made clear she was walled off as she described from the case.

>> i will not be participating and have not participated in the ultimate decision about the case, and i'm very proud that my public accountability unit, which i created in january of 2023, has been able to independently assess the evidence and come to a decision about this case. >> investigators concluding, based off a second autopsy, that gonzalez died of asphyxiation. while the initial report years ago pointed to toxic effects of methamphetamine and morbid obesity, among the causes of his death will they get justice? >> no. justice. is mario coming home. >> kat brooks is the executive director of the anti police terror project and believes the officers should be facing heavier charges. it's really hard to get a cop charged, let alone convicted, in this state or any other state around the country. >> this is very much far from over. all madam d.a. can do is charge. now it's up to a judge and a jury at this time. >> one of the three involved officers is no longer employed by the city of alameda, while

the other two have been placed on administrative leave. if convicted, they face up to four years in state prison and are expected to be in court in may. tara campbell, abc seven news and there are new developments related to the antioch police texting scandal that broke last year. >> one of the sergeants named in the fbi investigation is going to be returning to work. sergeant rick hoffman was put on paid leave last year. documents from the fbi and the contra costa county district attorney's office show hoffman on a series of text chains that used racist, misogynistic and homophobic language and memes. >> if you sent a message, received a message, laughed at a message. if you didn't report these messages, we don't need you in antioch, abc7 news has learned that investigation was conducted, which cleared hoffman to return to work. >> that could include a demotion in rank. details of the investigation have not been made public. >> san francisco is getting

giant pandas. the mayor has been in talks with china for months now about bringing these animals to the city, and now it looks like it's finally happening. abc seven news reporter ryan curry joining us live in the studio. ryan, when will they get here? what are their names? what do they like to do? what do they like to eat? we want to know it all, ryan. >> we don't know those answers quite yet. i'm sure we'll learn more in the coming weeks. but mayor breed has been asking for this for months, and it looks like her persistence has paid off. she first brought this up during apec back in november. chinese president xi jinping indicated the animals could make an appearance in california. giant pandas are considered sacred in china, so sharing them with other countries is a big deal. they call it panda diplomacy, the zoo ceo told us back in february. the last time pandas were in san francisco was back in 1984, and it was the most crowded the zoo has ever been. back in february, china announced san diego will be getting pandas, but bri did not give up. she recently. she recently has been in china and

last night made this announcement. >> i have some really exciting news. we have some cute, cuddly black and white beauties coming to our city. ladies and gentlemen, welcome pandas to san francisco show the highest attendance we have ever had on thanksgiving in the history of the zoo. >> even though they were just here for three months, we were over a million visitors. >> now, this won't be cheap. our media partners at the sf standard says the zoo will have to renovate a current facility that will cost around $4 million, followed by 20 million for a new exhibit. the mayor hopes it will be a big boost to the economy and to tourism. just like it did 40 years ago. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> guys, that is really fun news. thanks ryan. now to the hotly contested name change of the airport in oakland. the san francisco bay oakland international airport, the city of san francisco is now officially suing the port of oakland over that name. san francisco city attorney david

chu says the name switch will confuse travelers and infringes on sfo's trademark. >> we are concerned about how oakland is trying to intentionally divert traffic from sfo to itself, if that will create economic harm for us. it's unfair and it infringes on our long standing trademark rights. >> the port responded to the suit saying, quote, sfo cannot lay claim to the geographically descriptive terms san francisco, let alone claim exclusive rights to the san francisco bay. a final vote on the name change is scheduled for next month. >> time now approaching 510 on our friday and we are anticipating a cooler afternoon today. part of the reason why is that we do have our marine layer back this morning. it's banked up right along our coast and it's around the bay shoreline in spots right now, and even some coastal drizzle is not out of the question. san jose right now is reporting clear skies out there as we take a look at the

morning commute. just be aware that we will have overcast skies and a lot of cities early on. but that marine layer, it breaks down pretty fast. between about eight and 9 a.m. we'll see sunshine reappearing and we'll have those temperatures slowly warming today. not as fast as the days past, only into the upper 50s by 10 a.m. by 11 a.m. we have some spots in the low 60s. so here's future weather. let's go hour by hour. that jacket you take with you this morning, you'll keep it on longer than yesterday or the day before, because still, at 10 a.m, we're mainly in the upper 50s and a lot of spots heading into the afternoon. we will see an area wide cooldown. it's noticeable around the bay shoreline where instead of the 70s, most of us are staying in the 60s for daytime highs. but our warmest areas away from the coast. we'll go into the low and mid 70s and friday night plans. we will have our marine layer pushing back in from the coastline, so we do cool off pretty quickly. this afternoon. looking at highs around the state today, the coast will remain cool, staying in the 60s from la to santa barbara and

a.m. those two lanes i'm talking about, let's send it back to the desk. thank you. amanda. >> abc seven news is following the story of accusations against a rising political star in san francisco. now, the san francisco police department is weighing in on tuesday. our media partner, the san francisco standard, released an explosive report revealing the stories of several women who have made a slew of allegations against john jacobo. jacobo was the director of the powerful housing nonprofit taco taco. he's since resigned. the standard says the allegations date back several years and come from at least four women, including three who filed police reports. sfpd says they are actively working on the cases. >> it does such a disservice to say that we aren't investigating cases like this or we delayed. that's absolutely couldn't be further from the truth. >> captain o'brien there with sfpd, says she is in charge of

the unit investigating and she wants survivors to know she reads every single police report. >> new developments with governor newsom's plan to clear out. death row at san quentin prison and convert it into a rehabilitation center. some of the condemned have already been relocated, and one of the prisons is in chino in southern california. the chino mayor says she's concerned after learning 26 prisoners are transferred there. she knows prison sits in the middle of town and there is a school park and businesses near it. >> oh gosh, these prisoners are the worst of the worst. i mean, they have committed murder, they have committed rape, they have committed atrocities that you wouldn't even want to know about . >> last month, when abc seven news visited san quentin for a tour of the prison, we learned about the effort to reform those who are on death row. one prison official says the program has been around for about two years, and so far it's worked. >> we have several, programs here that have a 0% recidivism

rate. as far as the guys that are, transferring out. >> one of the reasons why the inmates can't stay at san quentin is because it does not have an electrified fence. the goal is to move all of them out of the prison by july. >> the construction company involved in a deadly trench collapse in san francisco is now facing a $371,000 fine. 25 year old javier romero died when that trench he was working in at divisadero and oak streets caved in last september. cal osha has just announced it's now cited darcy and hardie construction inc. the agency said the company didn't have a way for employees to get out in case of a collapse. they were apparently warned about this in a previous inspection. a lawsuit settled by bart is expected to bring sweeping changes for riders who have disabilities. the suit claimed the transit agency violated the americans with disabilities act. bart is going

to renovate dozens of station elevators and repair elevators and escalators that are out of service. it will also improve the cleanliness of stations and come up with an emergency preparedness plan. >> peninsula restaurant week kicks off today. dozens of restaurants showing off their best food in the fourth annual event. expect to find specials at nearly all of them. peninsula restaurant week runs through next saturday, and a new soul food restaurant is opening today in san francisco's fillmore district. >> minnie belle soul movement received funding from the dream keepers initiative, which is a program to help bring black owned businesses to the city. minnie bell's opens in the fillmore between o'farrell and eddy, and they also have a restaurant in emeryville. see, that's the chicken i got to try on wednesday. delicious >> did you try the mac and cheese? >> no. see, i had to keep going for the day, and i think that if i had had all of that, i might have been laid out. yes, yes,

keep it on pretty much all morning long. temperatures are going to be slow to warm today. looking at your weather wellness. air quality is good. tree pollen remains high. your uv index is a six out of an 11 that is high. so looking at highs across the region today not as warm as yesterday, the coast stays pretty cool today with limited sunshine, but away from the coast we'll have a marine layer break down, but 60s and 70s for daytime highs closer to where we should be for this time of the year. friday night plans early on we will have mainly clear skies giving way to that marine layer, returning closer to 9:10 p.m. but all in all, it's shaping up to be a nice friday night. if you have any plans overnight tonight we will have that coastal fog redeveloping some patchy cloud cover away from the coast. overnight lows in the 40s and low 50s. future tracker temperatures saturday we get a minor war, but a warming trend underway. 70s and 80s and a lot of cities. sunday will be the warmer of the two days, but both days expect a lot of sunshine

of opening is approximately 6 a.m. we know that there's gravel on the roadway and emergency crews are on scene. >> number seven starbucks trying to make its plastic cups more sustainable. the new cups are made with 20% less plastic, which amounts to keeping more than 13 million pounds of plastic out of landfills every year. the new cups debut in the u.s. and canada later this year. >> the company, hoping to build a new city in solano county, says the project could fill an economic gap. venture capitalists backed corporation california forever funded a study on solano counties economy. a former director from the state department of finance led that study. he says solano lags behind all other bay area counties in income and has higher poverty and unemployment rates. california forever's plan includes building a city near fairfield with homes for 400,000 people. the project will be on the county ballot in november. >> it is officially the off season for the warriors, and the team's future is uncertain. head

coach steve kerr and general manager mike dunleavy met with the media to wrap up the season. and the big question is, is whether the big three steph curry, klay thompson, draymond green are going to be playing together again. thompson is an unrestricted free agent. both kerr and dunleavy say they want him back. >> i think it's a mutual feeling , i mean, the guy's been here a long time. he means so much to the organization, you know, we really, really value him. and so there's nothing that would make me think that he wants to go somewhere else or we don't want him back. and for that reason, i'm hopeful we can make it happen. but, you know, it's a it's a deal. both sides got to be be good with it. we've got to be able to play them less. >> but in order to do that we've got to add more shooting to the roster. frankly. if we can add more shooting then and limit, you know, klay's minutes, i think he'll be much more effective in a season long. >> the warriors have missed the playoffs in three of the last

>> spectacular conditions coming our way saturday and sunday. what you'll notice today, though, is morning cloud cover and a cooler afternoon. our marine layer is overhead in a lot of spots, including sfo. this morning. the airport is reporting cloudy conditions right now and there is a little bit of drizzle along the coast to temperatures right now we're in the upper 40s and lower 50s in most locations, and as you take that jacket with you this morning, you'll likely keep it on for several more hours. compared to the past couple of days, because the warming is slow today, and that leads to a cooler afternoon. here's how the day shapes up. let's talk sky condition first. you'll have partly sunny skies early on as we burn off that marine layer, and then in the afternoon, brighter conditions do prevail. your sunrise here at 628 this morning. later on today, temperatures about 5 to 8 degrees cooler compared to yesterday. the coast in the 50s, the bay shoreline mainly in the 60s and inland will go into the 70s. so back to reality, so to speak. this is closer to where we should be for this time of the year. but we'll talk about

that weekend warm up in a few minutes. but let's check in with amanda. she's a traffic alert this morning, drew. >> traffic continues to be slow moving in the east bay. this is in pleasanton. a solo car crash before southbound 680 before castlewood drive. you can see traffic is stopped. not moving at all. two lanes are blocked and there is stopped traffic from stone ridge drive. the estimated time of reopening is approximately 6 a.m. there are reports of gravel on the roadway and emergency crews are on scene . it is now an hour delay. let's get back to the desk. >> thanks, amanda. developing this morning israel strikes back against iran, which is leading to more concern over the possibility of an all out war in the middle east. abc news reporter perry russom explains the latest escalation of violence in video posted online. >> these flashes in the sky show iran's air defense in action. a senior us official telling abc news. israeli missiles hit a site in iran and there were some loud sounds that were heard in the east of the city of isfahan.

>> and this was related to the air defense system triggered by the presence of three small drones that were present in that area. >> iranian state media reporting an explosion was heard in a city outside of isfahan, not far from a major military base and nuclear facility, adding the nuclear facility was not damaged. state media, seemingly downplaying the attack, reporting everything is back to normal. >> that seems to indicate that iran is seeking to step down off the ledge, minimize the impact of the attack, and perhaps walk back down the escalation escalation ladder. >> from here, it's time to michael. >> hours before the attack, israel's defense minister saying israel has the freedom of action to do what it wants after sunrise. video from isfahan shows life continuing our tom soufi burj in israel, it appears, appears at this stage that the iranian regime is trying to play this down and the israelis are not trying to own it.

traumatizing for myself, it's important to remember the reason why i went to, that dinner in the first place, which is to make a larger statement about the fact that the uc has invested over $2 billion into weapons, arms manufacture companies. and we are complicit in this. >> the dean who hosted the dinner is jewish. the university put out a statement the day after the incident supporting him around the world, students at the university of southern california protesting the decision that the school's valedictorian will not be speaking at graduation. >> university officials told the scholar that she would not be able to speak due to security concerns. some critics are upset about the students pro-palestinian views, which were shared online. some people say the links and content she shared on social media promote anti-semitism, but some students who disagree with her still believe that her voice should be heard. >> one of the gifted, most gifted girls i've ever met, this university is trying to silence her. i just think it's very

>> it's happening. giant pandas are coming to san francisco. the mayor secured a deal with china, and now the animals are heading to the city at some point. abc seven news reporter ryan curry is here with this very exciting news. so, ryan, the san francisco zoo is already getting ready to welcome them. >> yeah, that's right, reggie, we still have to wait until probably 2025. but mayor breed made the announcement last night. they will be coming to san francisco. she hopes it will be a big boost to the economy. the mayor has been in china recently. she has been trying to get pandas for a while. she brought the idea forward during apec in november, and chinese president xi jinping hinted at the possibility of them coming to san francisco. they are sacred animals in china, and sharing them is a way to increase relations with other countries. they call it panda diplomacy. the last time giant pandas were in san francisco was 1984, and the zoo says it was the most crowded it has ever been. in a story back in february, the zoo ceo told us they've been working for a decade to make this happen. and this past christmas, china told

is back, which is going to help usher in some cooler temperatures this afternoon. here's a look at your accuweather headlines. we will start out with morning clouds and a lot of areas, especially those cities close to the coast. drizzle. not out of the question underneath the marine layer this morning, but we'll get a lot of sunshine this afternoon. the weekend outlook is looking fantastic. sunshine a minor warmup. it's looking great both days saturday and sunday. then next week we will see a dramatic cooldown coming. and that does include additional cloud cover. by tuesday and wednesday of next week. temperatures this morning we're in the 40s and in the 50s right now. you'll need that jacket as you step outside on this friday, and you'll probably keep it on all morning because of the marine layer will be slow to warm over the next couple of hours, but highs today will stay in the 50s and 60s close to the coast thanks to that marine layer with us around the bay shoreline, mainly in the 60s and low 70s, so it is noticeably cooler today, and our warmest spots away from the coast will go into the mid 70s for daytime highs. looking at your beach, boat and surf forecast winds
