[ all chuckle ] i love you. a day of massive disruption on bay area roads by pro-palestinian protesters. tonight turning into confrontations with police. the most intense we've seen all day will be right now. >> we're tracking the day of action from ripping down fences outside tesla to stopping traffic on 8-80 in oakland and trapping drivers for hours on the golden gate bridge. >> i'm feeling pretty frustrated. >> we just want to get to home or work. everybody just mad. >> plus, a pastor deeply involved in the south bay community now charged with sexually assaulting a child.

allegations of years of abuse. and tonight, one of the pastor's own children is speaking only to abc seven and an emotional night for a stanford star, cameron brink, heading to the wnba. >> and her first congratulate comes straight from steph curry's mom. >> this is just such a nerve wracking environment, but we work so hard for this. >> a lot to get to tonight. all on abc seven news at 11. >> always live abc seven news starts right now, and we begin tonight with the protests across the bay area, the last one wrapping up just hours ago with police firing pepper balls. >> good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. now these gatherings were not massive in attendance, but they had a huge impact. the chp arrested 38 people tied to the first round of protests. this morning. protesters targeted three spots the golden gate bridge and a one location in each direction of 8-80 in oakland. >> frustrated drivers ended up trapped for hours as chp worked

to break up the demonstrations. protesters went to extremes to make sure it lasted as long as possible, linking themselves to cars through tubes and chaining themselves to barrels filled with concrete. it took jackhammers to free them. >> 12 hours after the protests, first started, another group gathered outside the tesla factory in fremont. that's where abc seven news reporter tim jones is tonight, wrapping up this disruptive, disruptive day of action. >> tense moments at a pro-palestinian protest outside the tesla factory in fremont monday night. protesters being fired at with pepper balls after they tore down police fencing set up around the facility. >> this tesla factory is one of the most productive factories in the state, and so in this area, we wanted to target a big center of production and really cause an impact. >> the night's protest, one of several that happened around the bay area monday, earlier in the day, protesters also shutting down the golden gate bridge as well as parts of 8-80. all of

the demonstrations, a part of the so-called a15 day of protest, symbolically happening on april 15th or tax day and meant to cause economic disruption to those protesters believe are helping fund the israel-hamas war. >> a lot of these companies are just thinking about their profits and uh- unless unless they're affected, they need pressure. >> monday night's protesters initially met at the warm springs bart station before marching down to the tesla plant less than a mile away. while the first protested on the side of one of the factory's entrances. they then walked around the site where those tense moments occurred. after meeting police outside the gates of tesla monday night, protesters eventually decided to call it quits and head back home. in addition to causing economic disruption, protesters say they want the u.s. government to stop sending money and arms to israel , many of them telling us they're sick of politicians not listening to them. >> i don't think there's anything i can say to biden that would make him listen, he's a terrible man. and, i will not be voting for him. >> and even though many have

been out in the streets for over six months now, the protesters say they're not stopping any time soon. >> but we will come out in the numbers to make sure that we are heard in fremont. >> tim johns abc seven news. >> it doesn't appear anyone was arrested at that protest in fremont. >> yeah, the chp says that dozens of people arrested in the morning protests could face charges, including unlawful assembly, resisting arrest and false imprisonment, attempting to block or shut down a freeway or a state highway to protest is unlawful, it's dangerous, and it prevents motorists from safely reaching their destinations. it's similar to nearly five months ago, when 80 people were arrested for a protest shutting down the bay bridge. president biden was in san francisco for the apec summit. at the time. those protesters took a deal to avoid prosecution, ordered to pay restitution and complete community service. >> it will be up to the district attorneys in san francisco and alameda county to decide whether today's protesters are charged. >> this was a day of coordinated

protests across the country, from wall street to major airports. protesters blocked the main roads into chicago o'hare and seattle's airport, forcing passengers and pilots to walk to the terminal. dozens of people were arrested in a number of cities. our abc seven mornings team was all over this story today, bringing you the hours of live coverage as the protests unfolded. drivers stuck on the golden gate bridge streamed abc seven on their phones for news while they waited. you can live stream us on abc seven news.com or on the abc seven bay area app . >> a former youth pastor well known in san jose, is facing multiple sex crime charges. police say the alleged abuse went on for years, starting when the victim was only eight years old. tonight, only on seven. the suspect's family is responding. abc seven news reporter j.r stone has their message. you're looking at images from the web page of brett bymaster, a former san jose youth pastor who is now in jail.

>> bymaster is charged with multiple sex crimes against a minor under the age of 14. >> i'm shocked because again, they always were a bible based uh- talkers. >> neighbors reacting to court documents that charge bymaster with six counts of a lewd or lascivious act on a child by force, violence, duress, menace and fear. bymaster was a former youth pastor at river church community. he also founded the healing grove health center. his wife came to his defense when i spoke with her monday night. >> brett is a kind and honest man who has dedicated his life to helping others. this outrageous accusation against my husband are patently false. he is absolutely innocent. i have faith that the truth will ultimately prevail. >> one of bymaster sons, matthew, adopted from sudan 16 years ago, is also defending his father, saying people are coming after him because of the good work he does for the poor.

>> they're having their own company now and people are getting mad at them because they're doing good to community. >> san jose police say the now adult female was sexually assaulted multiple times by bymaster from the age of eight to the age of 13, and between the years of 2014 and 2018. previous allegations also surfaced about bymaster a few years ago, but no charges were filed until now. >> a man cannot go into a black kid like us, you know, so he didn't do nothing wrong. people are lying. they put them in his name to ruin his career because he's winning and he's a christian guy. >> but to say that you were abused sexually from the age of 8 to 13, that's that's a big allegation. >> yeah, that big allegation. but they're lying. you just lie, you know, because he was a youth pastor helping everybody. neighbors though, are concerned if portrayed as a quote unquote, you know, good christian man, officers are urging anyone who might have additional information in this case to come forward in san jose. >> j.r. stone abc seven news.

>> alameda county district attorney pamela price appears headed for a recall election this year. tonight the county registrar of voters announced there are enough valid signatures on a petition to force a recall vote in a statement, petition organizers say this shows overwhelming support for a change of leadership in the da's office. a lawyer for price tells abc seven news he was questioned. he has questions about whether the signature gatherers followed all of the rules the board of supervisors will take up setting an election date later this month >> new details tonight after another wild weekend of sideshows in oakland, police say they issued more than 50 citations and arrested three people after multiple sideshows shut down roads early yesterday morning. officers say people set fire, as you saw, to at least one car and fired guns into the air. police towed 21 cars across three different locations. opd

is sending out extra officers each weekend to try to break up these sideshows. tackling homelessness is a major challenge as we build a better bay area. san francisco just added dozens of new shelter beds in the form of small cabins. they're set up right next to the 16th street mission bart station. the city says 60 cabins will give unhoused people a private and comfortable place to stay, with resources to get them on to the path to long time housing. the cabins will be there for two years until the city can break ground on affordable housing. >> tesla is going to lay off 10% of its workforce. ceo elon musk notified employees this morning saying the company needed to reduce costs and increase productivity. tesla has been facing a slump in sales as competition in the electric vehicle market has increased and intensified. it's unclear exactly who within the company will be affected by the layoffs. tesla is expected to announce their quarterly profits next week. >> one of the bay area's best basketball players is headed to

los angeles with the second pick in the 2024 wnba draft. >> the los angeles sparks select cameron brink, stanford university former stanford star cameron brink is now a member of the wnba. >> l.a. sparks. they made brink the second pick of the draft earlier today. brink enters the pros after a decorated career at stanford. >> she shared a tearful moment at the draft with a familiar face to warriors fans. sonia curry, steph's mom, is also brink's godmother. >> that is all right. it is one of only five in the country, and tonight a major bay area women's prison is shutting down amid allegations of widespread abuse. >> a hollywood socialite goes to the state capitol fighting to make sure teens today have more protection, have protections that she never got. >> listen to this. a chemical too dangerous for paint thinner is still allowed in your coffee. we'll look at how california could change decaf. >> first to look at what's

federal bureau of prisons announced today it would close the women's prison in dublin. at least eight employees, including a former warden and chaplain, have been charged with sexually abusing inmates. a woman who served more than two years there says what happened inside was horrifying. >> the officers there that insulted us, they they basically see us in the showers, they open the curtains. >> the bureau of prisons says it tried to make changes in dublin, but those changes weren't working. last month, the fbi raided the prison, and a judge took the unprecedented step of appointing a special master to oversee the prison. >> this kind of abrupt closure really feels like a total evasion of accountability to survivors, incarcerated people and advocates. the women imprisoned there will now be moved to other facilities. >> there are about 50 civil rights lawsuits pending against fci dublin employees. >> president trump is expected back in court tomorrow. today he

became the first us president to stand trial in a criminal case. he's charged, as you know, with falsifying business records to conceal a hush money payment to adult film actress stormy daniels. daniels claims the two had an affair, which trump denies. the trial is expected to last about six weeks, and trump says he plans to testify. >> celebrity heiress paris hilton is calling on the california legislature to help protect youth placed in residential treatment facilities . hilton says she endured mental and physical abuse as a teen while at a treatment center. she now wants to help victims and bring attention to facilities accused of mistreating youth. proposed legislation would require state licensed facilities to report to parents and government officials when restraints and disciplinary measures are used on minors. >> my horror story is not unique. hundreds of thousands of youth experience solitary confinement and deadly physical restraints every year, yet their voices have been silenced and their pain ignored. >> the bill has bipartisan

support. if it ultimately passes, many of its requirements would go into effect by 2026. all right. >> we'll move now to our abc seven news at 11 advancer with a look at the news you'll hear about in the coming days. first, the growing concern in the south bay about losing a critical health care resource. the trauma center at san jose's regional medical center is slated for closure. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey shows you how local leaders could decide to fight it in medical emergencies. >> every second counts. san jose city council members peter ortiz and domingo candelas know it personally. ortiz's mother's and candela's grandfather's lives were saved at regional medical center. if critical services close here in august, the council members worry about others in similar emergency need. >> without access to regional medical center, people like my mom would never have had a second chance. >> this closure signifies more than just the end of services. it represents a loss of hope and support for those who need it most. >> in february, regional medical

center announced the imminent closure of its level two trauma center, stemi services and other cardiac services. the center said they were just not being utilized enough to outweigh the cost of keeping them open. but santa clara county supervisor cindy chavez disagrees. >> we are here because this is an emergency. >> we rely on these services to protect lives and well-being of our community every day, and we're demanding that health care corporation of america and regional medical center maintain these critical services, and the board of supervisors aimed to take action. >> the emergency medical services agency studied the impact that closing these services will have on the community. chavez and her colleagues will hear this report and from residents of east san jose during a meeting tuesday. >> we want those community comments because we think it's very important to make the case to the state that they should step in. >> it wouldn't be the first time the board of supervisors stepped in during matters of public health. when san jose hospital closed down, the county bought saint louis and o'connor to help with the increase in demand. >> whenever one of these

institutions makes a change, it has huge impacts on the life and well-being of the community and forces the public sector for us to use public dollars because they don't think they're making enough money to provide the services that we think they should be providing. >> if the board votes to fight the closure tuesday, they'll take the concerns from ems and the community to the department of health services in san jose. dustin dawsey abc seven news our next dancer, organizers of the portola music festival, are hoping to bring it back for another year. >> tomorrow, san francisco officials will consider the application for this year's event. it comes as organizers are asking for input on how to make the festival less bothersome for neighbors. in years past, music from the event at pier 80 could be heard all the way across the bay in alameda. now, organizers have distributed a letter to alameda residents and city officials asking for feedback. >> our final advancer tonight is the debate at the state capitol about how decaf coffee is made. if you drink decaf, you'll want to know about this. a bill would

ban a chemical used by some companies to get the caffeine out of coffee, making it decaf. the epa has banned the chemical from industrial use and products like paint strippers. bill supporters say methylene chloride is a known carcinogen, and many people just don't know it's in their drink. over 70% of consumers that reach for decaffeinated coffee are pregnant women or people with health conditions. >> the national coffee association says the bill is unnecessary and there's no justification to ban this chemical in coffee production. >> if the bill gets passed, the ban could go into effect in early 2027. >> the cdc has received complaints from people in nine states claiming they've had harmful reactions to counterfeit botox. nine people have been hospitalized and four others had to be treated with a botulism antitoxin. many of the products being investigated are counterfeit or were administered in non-health care settings. so we're talking homes and spas or by an unlicensed or untrained individual, cdc says. before receiving an injection, check

going from 69 today in san jose to 77 degrees. here's what's going to bring us the warmth. it's this area of high pressure that is building in. and temperatures are going to go up. it is just going to be nice spring weather the next couple of days on live doppler seven. all is quiet at this hour. your temperatures in the 40s and the 50s. here's a look at what you can expect as we look at a view from our emeryville camera. looking at the bay bridge overnight tonight. areas of fog tomorrow, the warming trend continues. today's temperatures were up a few degrees, but because we had a lot of cloud cover this morning, we really didn't feel it this afternoon. midweek temperatures will be above average and you will certainly feel it if you didn't today. so your morning numbers will be in the 40s and 50s. patches of fog along the coast and also in the north bay as you go into the afternoon hours is just going to be pleasant weather, a mix of sun and high clouds, low 60s to the upper 70s around the region. now i do want to show you your afternoon highs for wednesday. we're going to bump you up into the 80s. you

will notice thursday we still have a few low to 80s far inland. and as you look at the accuweather seven day forecast, that warming trend will push those temperatures up into the upper 70s tomorrow. numbers will continue to climb low 80s summerlike weather wednesday, thursday inland 60s, coast side, 70s around the bay and a little bit cooler for your friday uh- going into the weekend. it is looking absolutely gorgeous. dan and ama will be right back

facility there. the company announced the closure today and its plans to lay off about 200 workers. the facility in fairfield has been listed as one of abbott's priority manufacturing plants. abbott says the reason for the closure is due to operational costs. it also coincides with the company discontinuing zoneperfect protein bars. >> the wnba is looking to expand from 12 to 16 teams over the next four years. the league is planning on launching its newest team here in the bay area next year. some cities in the running for future teams include philadelphia, portland, denver, toronto and nashville. this year's women's ncaa championship
