five this morning, israel forces on alert. here's a live look from there. now in israel, and as tensions are very high after iran unleashed hundreds of drones and missiles towards israel, world leaders now trying to avoid a serious escalation in the middle east. good morning. i'm stephanie sierra. the attack is considered a retaliatory strike against israel for the bombing of iran's embassy in syria. abc news reporter perry russom is in washington, and he has more on the u.s. response and the developments overnight. it appears we're having some technical difficulties. we will get you that information shortly, perry was reporting to us earlier that the shelter in place at the us embassy has been lifted, but the situation remains complex here. it is

>> israel says it stopped 99% of the more than 300 drones and missiles launched by iran. us officials confirming american forces shot down about 70 of them. a us official telling abc news iran's targets were three israeli military bases, including one housing fighter jets. >> together with our allies and partners, we are operating at a at we're operating at full force to defend the state of israel and the people of israel. >> president biden, cutting his weekend trip to delaware short, returning to the white house yesterday afternoon to meet with his national security team. biden, speaking with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu late last night, saying afterward, i condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms. >> the president understands the prime minister uh- runs a government for a sovereign state of israel, and that they'll decide whether and how they're going to respond to what iran did last night. >> the us military has been

increasing its presence in the middle east, bringing in additional troops, ships and aircraft to protect assets already in the region. the question now turns to if and how israel will respond. >> the air power, the capability of the israeli air force is far beyond anything that the iranians have. and the israeli air force can own the airspace over iran. so between that and the ships at sea, the israelis have a lot of options in how they retaliate. >> and president biden says he wants to meet with the leaders from the group of seven later today. he says he wants a diplomatic response to what he calls iran's brazen attack. >> stephanie perry, what do we know about this g7 meeting? >> yeah, so the g7 is a group of seven countries of advanced economies all across the world, is being run by the italian prime minister. they should be meeting in the next few hours. but we do know that they are that they are pushing for this diplomatic response in response to is iran? >> yeah, a lot to keep track of. perry, thank you for your

reporting. now new this morning, iranian airports have suspended flights until tomorrow morning. israel on the other hand, says its airspace is reopening today. the country closed the airspace and canceled flights after iran's overnight strikes. flights into israel were also disrupted. united airlines also canceled multiple flights yesterday, including a flight from newark to tel aviv was the scene outside the british embassy in tehran. a group of hardliners celebrated the missile and drone strikes against israel, many of them waving iranian flags. some carried signs that said, quote, we are ready to be sent to war. now we're hearing about the impact of the global conflict here in the bay area. tara campbell spoke with local families about how they're feeling and what they expect. >> iranian airstrikes intercepted in the skies of jerusalem, tehran saturday

app to get the latest breaking news alerts and live stream updates now to your sunday forecast. meteorologist francis dinglasan is here and francis, not as much rain today. >> yeah. in fact, just a few spotty showers. i could say you could almost put the umbrella away, but you want to have it handy. here's a look at the center of this storm, and you can see it is moving through the bay area right now. it's also just getting much more disorganized. and we'll continue to see some possible light spotty showers here and there. right now most of the bay area is dry. some showers, some light, very light showers just south of cloverdale and also south of pescadero. so on our exclusive storm impact scale, it's still a level one for today. the spotty showers will continue mainly through through the morning hours. slight chance of thunderstorms, and even a little bit of snow on the highest peaks. notice in the next few hours it really starts to wind down by lunchtime. almost dry, but we won't rule out a shower here and there in

the afternoon. and then i'll talk about a warm up if you like the 80s, it's heading our way. >> stephanie francis, thank you. new this morning, two san francisco county jails are locked down because of a series of inmate attacks on deputies and staff. now, the sheriff's office is demanding help from the california national guard. amid these safety concerns and a staffing shortage, the lockdown affects county jail number two here in san francisco and county jail number three in san bruno. that means community and parent child visits are canceled through tomorrow. seven staff members were injured in attacks starting on march 29th. now, the sheriff's office told our media partners that the san francisco standard, in part, quote, we are actively investigating these incidents to ascertain their root causes and any potential correlations between the string of attacks. we're also following new developments in the case of a former sonoma county politician accused of sexual assault. multiple women are moving forward with civil action

against former windsor mayor dominic foppoli. that follows a recent decision by california's attorney general to not file criminal charges against him. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has these details from santa rosa. >> we will not be silenced. we are not going to stop the fight. >> seven women claiming they were sexually assaulted by former windsor mayor dominic foppoli holding a news conference with their attorneys outside the sonoma county civil and family courthouse. the accusers say they're disappointed by last month's decision by attorney general rob bonta not to file criminal charges against foppoli due to lack of evidence in the case. >> we are shocked that even with the large number of women from all over the globe who have come forward, that this is still not considered enough for a criminal criminal conviction, these women trusted in the police department and the attorney general's office to do their job prosecuting these crimes. >> and unfortunately, the

criminal justice system failed. these women. >> popolo resigned from office three years ago after multiple women came forward with sexual assault allegations. the scandal rocking the small wine country community. >> this has been so hard, reality tv personality farrah abraham says foppoli drugged and sexually assaulted her in florida in 2021. next time you're offered wine or anything to drink, think about the sexual predator that may be behind the bottle. protect yourself. >> other women recorded statements of their trauma. i fight with myself and i look stupid. >> i must have spent to let him hurt me for so long. did you assault any of these women? >> absolutely not. >> people telling us last month the encounters were consensual. in a new statement, he said in part, there needs to be consequences to crying wolf and attempts to ruin the lives of innocent people. based on coordinating false stories about an individual, the truth will eventually come out. after

today, i am seriously considering filing a lawsuit against these false accusers for slander and defamation. foppoli now lives in italy and says he's engaged to be married this summer. he's considering a return to sonoma county politics in 2025. >> we're dealing with the arrogance and the narcissism of somebody who thinks he's the victim. >> attorneys say a civil lawsuit against foppoli is now moving forward in sonoma county. cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> in the north bay, seven people, including one child, are now safe after they were rescued from an overturned boat in tomales bay. marin county firefighters say they were clinging to this boat as it capsized around three yesterday afternoon. all of the victims were taken to the hospital with minor injuries because of cold exposure. federal, regional and local agencies all helped with this rescue. as we head to break, let's check in with francis. how's it looking out there? >> it is starting to look a lot better. in fact, we're seeing some breaks in the cloud cover as we show you live shot of the bay bridge. so some sunshine

your full forecast coming up. new details about the impact of closing. one of the only trauma centers in the south bay regional medical center in san jose plans to close its trauma services in august. the hospital says it's not getting enough patients. a new report by santa clara county's medical services agency says the closure will mean longer wait times for ambulances, especially north and east of regional medical center. that's because ambulances will have to travel farther to drop patients off. two trauma centers will remain in the south bay after this closure in the east bay. now, multiple drivers crashed into two fire trucks in separate incidents. firefighters in walnut creek say a driver smashed into a fire engine, blocking off the scene of an earlier accident. it happened on 680 near olympic boulevard around ten yesterday morning. four firefighters went to the hospital to be evaluated. contra costa fire says the people in the car that hit the truck are in critical condition. this rning the same thing happened again on 680 between fremont and

sunol. firefight there say two different drivers smashed into their fire engine. one of the drivers was hurt, but thankfully the firefighters are okay. school leaders in oakland are under pressure from budget problems and strike threats. this week they took a step to solve those issues, but it could mean consolidating and closing certain schools. the oakland unified school board voted to set up metrics to help figure out which schools to shut down the guidelines are supposed to make sure closures don't hurt vulnerable students. usd is in negotiations with several unions and wants to give raises. they can't do that without budget cuts, though, and consolidating schools could free up some money. >> there is a lack of teachers across the district, so our principals are having to do 2 to 3 times the amount of work to get to keep our schools running and keep our keep our students learning. >> this morning, usd is not

expected to share a list of potential campus closures until the fall. state lawmakers have introduced a bill that could challenge ticketmaster. oakland assembly member buffy wicks introduced the measure, which would allow multiple companies to sell the first official tickets. currently, ticketmaster is the only primary seller. the goal is to have more ticket buying options that could possibly push lower ticket prices. other companies, like stubhub and seatgeek typically get resale tickets. >> ticketmaster controls 80% of the primary ticket sales in the united states. this lack of competition, or otherwise known as a monopoly, hurts consumers >> officials say ticket prices have gone up 140% since live nation and ticketmaster merged in 2010. ticket master responded in a statement, saying in part, quote, we support reforms to improve ticketing, but ab 2808 will not do that. it will instead undermine the efforts of

artists, sports teams and primary ticketing companies to minimize ticket scalping. well, if you couldn't tell superbloom season is here and boy is it beautiful. poppies are popping up all along the east bay, along with some lavender. there are several good places to see wildflowers, and that includes table mountain near chico, sugarloaf state park in sonoma county, and skyline ridge preserve on the peninsula. experts say it won't rival last year's super bloom, but it will be pretty spectacular. and that's thanks to a lot of rain we've been having. we have more of that rain coming today, thankfully, not as much as yesterday. so if you have plans to get outside and enjoy the weather, there will be some breaks. people can do that. yeah lots of breaks today. >> in fact, most of the showers will be missing your neighborhood. and i'll show you that with the forecast animation. so pollen is high though for trees. and if you

need some of that allergy medication you might need some today, especially with the winds gusting so let's go and show you live doppler seven with satellite radar image. so we have some light rain falling far to our north north of santa rosa. and also on the lower part of the peninsula coast, you'll see some showers moving right now along highway one through davenport. and the santa cruz mountains have got the most rain earlier this morning for today in san francisco, as we show you a live view from sutro. temperature right now is 47 degrees oakland, 46. san jose is the only one at 50 degrees in half moon bay is warming up at 48 degrees. we're showing you a live view of the golden gate bridge. lots of cloud cover, but we're starting to see some breaks in the clouds and in the north bay. that's where we'll see some of the coolest numbers, like santa rosa is 44 right now, but we're also seeing some mid 40s through fairfield, concord and livermore. and the winds are coming from the northeast. so this land breeze is helping to

make things cooler this morning. they are gusting up to 23mph in half moon bay. also 21mph at sfo. so we are still dealing with some windy conditions. but check out this pretty shot. this one is from pier 39 today. what you'll need to deal with is some spotty showers. still windy, especially in during the morning hours, but then tomorrow will be dry and warmer. and then we have a warming trend. tuesday through thursday where some inland neighborhoods will hit the low 80s and around the bay. it's going to be really comfortable. temperatures above average. our futurecast model at 7:00 shows really quite a bit of dry spots here around the bay. some light showers in the north bay and possibly down towards gilroy and in the central valley. and you notice by lunchtime it really breaks up. we could just see a few spotty showers here and there throughout the afternoon. so many areas won't even get much rain from now through the rest of the day. in fact, zikr amounts of rain right around the

bay, maybe a little bit higher towards the north bay, and then also redwood city and then farther south towards the santa cruz mountains. highs today right near 60 degrees. so a little bit warmer compared to yesterday. and then overnight lows will be in the upper 40s. also a little bit milder compared to this morning. now i'm going to jump ahead to tuesday because what you'll see is temperatures start to jump up into the upper 70s for some inland areas, low 70s around the bay, and then check out the 80s on wednesday and even on thursday. some more low 80s for you. for some inland neighborhoods, here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so a storm level one with a few spotty showers left. partly cloudy tomorrow, and then check out that warm up tuesday, wednesday, thursday before we start to cool down a little bit, buttill comfortable for next

scale. so it's light today with spotty showers. there's still a slight chance of thunderstorms and even snow on the highest peaks because the system is colder. and you notice by 7:00 this morning, most of the rain to the north bay, but we really start to dry out by noon. >> stephanie francis, thank you. now to the latest on the conflict in the middle east following iran's retaliatory strikes on israel today. president joe biden will meet with g7 leaders to discuss a, quote, diplomatic response to yesterday's attack. he has made clear the u.s. will not participate in any offensive operations against iran. the u.s. embassy in jerusalem lifted its shelter in place order for u.s. government employees. today, it says the threat from iranian drones and missiles have diminished, but that could change. israel's military said 99% of the more than 300 projectiles fired were intercepted by israel and its partners. iran says it was in response to the deadly strike on the iranian consulate in syria

they claim israel carried out. israel did not confirm it carried out that attack on april 1st. this morning, we're hearing from two bay area scholars specializing in international relations. abc7 news reporter anser hassan has their perspective on this ongoing tension. >> iran's retaliatory attack on israel in response to the bombing of its embassy in syria was a restrained response, as professor lizette pool, they could have done something worse. >> i'm sure. i mean, they have a whole arsenal of stuff. they could have chosen another military response, but they chose something that was that did not put them in, put bodies in, in the mix pool teaches journalism at cal state east bay. >> she spent almost two decades reporting from the middle east for the associated press and the london times. israel hasn't claimed responsibility, but the pretext pool argues it's for iran's support of hezbollah. the april 1st embassy bombing killed

promise, which professor sashikumar says was a message for the iranian people. >> and by having a military response to that attack by israel, they are telling their people that they are defending their sovereignty and ensuring their security, she says. >> iran's response was calculated as to not invoke a military response from the united states, and made it very clear that this was the end of its military operation in dave, now basically forced israel to take the next step of escalation. >> if they choose to. >> still, israel is promising a response. sashikumar points out, this escalation could lead the middle east into something even bigger. >> if this current crisis is not handled very, deftly, this could lead to the development of a nuclear weapon by iran in self-defense, and then there would be nothing that would prevent israel from declaring openly that they have, nuclear weapons capability as well. and then you would have a openly

to remember. >> this week, the dean said the event was supposed to celebrate graduating students, and they're saddened. protesting students disrupt it for political purposes. happening tomorrow donald trump's hush money case opens with jury selection in he'll make history as the first former us president on criminal trial. trump was seen on the campaign trail this weekend ahead of tomorrow's jury selection, and the former president is accused of making hush money payments to adult film star stormy daniels ahead of the 2016 election. daniels claims she had an affair with trump, but he denies it. trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records. he also faces three other criminal trials coming up on this week. a full panel of legal experts break down what you need to know as the trial begins tomorrow. you can watch the full interview on this week with george stephanopoulos at eight this morning, right here on abc seven, a new poll shows president joe biden and the

former president are in a close race for the presidency, according to the new york times and siena college, 46% of voters say they support trump, 45% support biden. it's a tighter race than the last time the two outlets conducted a poll on both candidates. biden has a 38% approval rating, and at least 64% of voters say the country is headed in the wrong direction. we have new details now. oj simpson's body will be cremated tuesday in las vegas. sources say his brain will not be used for cte research after multiple requests from scientists. they wanted to study the x running backs brain to see if he suffered from the degenerative brain disease. it is typically found in football players who experienced concussions during their career. the late nfl star died wednesday after battling cancer. he was 76. still ahead this morning, the latest on what seems to be a never ending pothole problem for oakland. the

camera looking towards the bay. it's a going to be less today at 637. oakland has a major pothole problem. leaders say they have a paving plan, but many residents are skeptical, complaining that it's going at a snail's pace. abc seven news reporter lyanne melendez went to oakland to find out why it's taking so long. reporter blame it on the rain. >> in the meantime, city officials are asking oakland residents to have patience when filling those potholes. but really, how long can a city and its people put up with this nuisance? tell me what you see

every day. >> every day we see people come off the freeway. you're watching me. if you keep standing here long enough, you'll see the people swerving in and out. swerve over or they'll slow down, see? and it just every day. and if you're parked here, they will sideswipe your car. it has been many people who have had accidents here. >> we drove around oakland for two days, documenting what residents were experiencing. call them what you want. potholes, craters. some of these are too big to avoid. let's measure 22. wow. got too close to the road. >> i just got soaked. >> some neighbors have even spray painted around potholes to make sure drivers see them ahead of time. >> i just got my tire fixed because this street been messing up my tire.

>> we went to oakland's department of transportation. they're the ones coordinating the street repairs. they sent us to city hall, so we came to city hall to try to talk to a city council member and found this. the offices were closed on a wednesday. nobody is here. and of course, the city council members aren't here either. not everyone is back in person. they did leave their phone numbers though. next up, the mayor's office. except that it too was closed. wait, it says here we are away. so please ring the bell. what's going on in oakland? someone eventually came out and referred us to a press person who then sent us information on the status of oakland's five year paving plan work under the £0.05 continues to be behind schedule, primarily due to a slowdown in contract processing.

equipment challenges impacting in-house crews. council member noel gallo agreed to meet us outside city hall this past year. >> we did have a good number of vacancies and certainly i had to subcontract with even auto repair shops to make sure that our vehicles that fix the streets, are in operation. >> that's because the city's truck repair shop cannot handle the overwhelming demand. we were told that there are 20 employees currently working on 700 pieces of equipment. so what are we looking at here? >> we're looking at, you know, vehicles that need to be serviced so we can get them on the street for example, the city should have four designated city trucks that work exclusively to fill potholes. >> here's their status. one truck burnt in an accident. two are currently waiting to be repaired as parts are hard to find. that leaves oakland with only one working pothole truck,

francisco. no low clouds there right now where it's currently 47 degrees in oakland, 46 degrees. hayward's 48 san jose has been milder all morning, near 50 and half moon bay and san mateo, both at 48 degrees. right now, as we show you live shot of the golden gate bridge, we do see some gray skies over many parts of the north bay, and santa rosa is the coolest spot there. 44 degrees petaluma 45 and we're seeing lots of mid 50s and fairfield, concord also in livermore. and the winds are generally coming from the northeast. they are gusting up to 23mph in half moon bay and 21mph at sfo. also so they could be breezy the rest of the day. so here are the headlines this week as we show you this really pretty sunrise view from our roof camera. so we've got the orange sky there. so still some spotty showers with breezy conditions. but tomorrow we're drying out, partly cloudy and then even more sunshine and

warmer weather. tuesday through thursday. and i'll show you that also where we see lots of temperatures hit the 80s. so futurecast model shows at 8:00 some light rain in the north bay, and then by about lunchtime when the dubs game starts, you'll notice just cloud cover dry around the bay so these hit and miss showers will be mostly a miss for your area. in fact, maybe just a few hundredths of an inch in some spots in the north bay and not too much around the immediate bay and east bay. temperatures today will be warmer compared to yesterday. 5 to 10 degrees warmer and closer to average near 60 degrees for almost everyone. tonight they'll drop down generally into the upper 40s around the bay. low 40s for the north bay. and here's a look at the week ahead as ridge. this ridge builds. temperatures will warm up with more sunshine on tuesday. we'll see upper 70s for many neighborhoods and then check out wednesday. even san francisco will be in the low 70s inland areas in the low 80s like
