amid growing concern that iran is planning to attack israel in retaliation for the bombing of its consulate in damascus, syria, earlier this month. good evening. thank you for joining us. >> i'm dan ashley and i'm dionne lim. tensions are escalating in the middle east as the world braces for what's expected to be a direct and unprecedented attack by iran on israel. >> now, this comes as the us military moves additional assets to the region in the hope of deterring iran from a large scale attack, as well as bolstering protection for us forces already in the area. >> we are certainly mindful of a very public and what we consider to be a very credible threat made by iran in terms of, potential, attacks, on israel, and that we are in constant communication with our israeli counterparts, about making sure the, that they can defend themselves against those kinds of attacks. but we're watching this very, very, very closely. >> we are devoted to the defense of israel. we will support israel. we will defend help

defend israel, and iran will not succeed. >> one of the biggest concerns, of course, is that any attack from iran will spark a larger regional war involving not just israel and iran, but also syria and lebanon. several countries, including the us, have issued new travel guidelines for government employees headed to israel. >> now, this comes with a backdrop of concern about a rise in anti-jewish sentiment. today the anti-defamation league released its first ever report card on campus anti-semitism, giving stanford an f and cal a d. 85 schools nationwide were reviewed. 12 others, along with stanford, received an f, including harvard and princeton. the two schools that received an a were brandeis in massachusetts and elon university in north carolina. the adl says the report card assesses jewish life on campus as well as policies and actions related to combating anti-semitism and protecting jewish students. >> a stand in solidarity today

against a growing number of anti-muslim hate incidents across the country. it happened at a san francisco mosque that was vandalized during the ramadan holy month. as abc seven news reporter anser hassan tells us, the man accused of that crime pled not guilty in court today. >> surveillance video from masjid al-tawhid in san francisco captures a man smashing the mosque's windows last week, during the muslim holy month of ramadan. >> you see the mosque being in at its at its fullest during the month of ramadan. >> imam mohammed al ghazali leads daily prayer services at the mosque. he was joined by city and faith leaders ahead of its weekly friday congregational prayers. the show of solidarity amid an increase in reported anti-muslim hate incidents across the country. >> we realized that we had to do something today on behalf of the muslim community in san francisco, as well as on behalf of masjid al-tawhid, imam al-ghazali says he confronted the suspect when he allegedly targeted the mosque for a third time on april 10th. >> the same day he was arrested.

>> some racist remarks, which i told him, like, you know, these are not justifiable causes for you to come and vandalize our property and cause, you know, our, our people to be unsafe. >> that suspect is 35 year old robert gray. in court on friday, he pled not guilty to charges of felony vandalism with special allegations of a hate crime and ordered held without bail. his lawyer believes the mosque attack did not constitute a hate crime. >> there are some statements made, but nothing that appears to be kind of ethnic or religious, animus at all. >> but it is brazen and it is bold, and you're going to just keep coming over and over again, we're very thankful for the partnership with the mosque. >> assistant chief david lazar says in response to the attack, sfpd officers were stationed in front of mosques across the city. the last week of ramadan. he has a message for the community. >> we don't want, mosques or places of worship or churches to just see incidents and not think about calling us. we want them to report everything going on

that's really important to us. >> imam al-ghazali says the mosque is being vigilant. he adds, with the show of community support, they now know they're not alone. >> we hope peace and blessings do are spread across all communities, and we hope that such incidences do not impact anybody in san francisco. >> anser hassan abc seven news. >> a brush fire is sending out a lot of dark smoke into antioch and other communities in east east contra costa county. it's burning on kimball island that's located about 600 yards north of antioch and the san joaquin river. firefighters are letting the fire burn itself out. since there are no structures on the island. nothing in danger. kimball island is a wetland area that's been uninhabited for nearly a quarter century. >> caltrans is continuing repair work on a section of highway one between carmel and big sur. you might remember part of the road collapsed two weeks ago near rocky creek bridge, and now caltrans says it should finish initial repairs to stabilize the edge of the road by memorial

day. for now, though, cars are getting through on convoys after this initial work is done, a temporary signaling system will be installed to allow one way traffic through the area. well it has been such a beautiful week of weather. >> hope you got a chance to enjoy it. we are getting ready for some rain to turn. meteorologist sandyha patel is here with that sandy. >> yeah, and dan, we're going to be noticing those changes if you haven't already. it is much cooler today. take a look at a live picture from our emeryville camera. a beautiful view as we look across the bay of those clouds gathering. level one storm is on the way and those clouds are in advance of the storm. so let's go hour by hour late tonight, some wet weather moves in by midnight. you're already getting the rain in the north bay across the bay area. we're going to start to notice that mixed precipitation, higher peaks. tomorrow morning we'll be looking at snow. it's going to be a little bit on the breezy to gusty side, with the scattered showers continuing well into the afternoon. so tomorrow it's a one rain. brief downpours, gusty winds, chance of thunder and hail and snow on our higher

peaks. the snow levels will range between three 30,000 and 4000ft. look at the changes already underway. double digit drop in napa, concord, santa rosa, san jose, even livermore as we look at the winds there, gusty as well. 35 miles an hour in oakland, 32 in san jose. i'll be back to let you know if this storm is going to hang around for the second half of your weekend, or if it will move out and give you a chance to get outside. diane. all right, sounds good. >> sandhya. thank you. in the north bay, the search for a missing swimmer has come to a sad ending on the russian river. the body of the teen was recovered this afternoon, one day after he was last seen swimming with a friend near steelhead beach, just north of forestville. here's abc seven news reporter cornell bernard. >> friends and family and brothers and sisters. it's a tough day. >> first responders sharing sadness of a water rescue on the russian river, which became a recovery mission. >> very sad ending. this is never what we want. in the end,

the sonoma county sheriff's department says the body of a teenage boy was pulled from the russian river friday afternoon. >> the search for him began late thursday after a911 call. the two teens got into trouble while swimming. >> one of the teens made it out of the water and the other did not. >> the surviving teen was sent to the hospital. dive teams from napa and sacramento counties were called in to assist using sonar technology to search under the water, believed to be 7 to 10ft deep. >> why exactly they were out at the river is unclear at this point. my understanding is there were there was a group and there were adults with them. >> after winter rains, the russian river is now running high, fast and cold. and as we move into summer months, first responders say safety needs to be everyone's priority. >> every year we're called out to rescues here on the river carron, hancock from sonoma county fire district warns everyone to be careful if you're unfamiliar with the river or not. confident in your swimming abilities, please wear a life jacket out here and always have

a partner out here with you. someone on shore in case you need assistance. >> deputies say the teen was not from sonoma county. fire. >> all of our fire agencies, we do everything we can for a different result in the north bay. >> cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> one man is dead. more than a dozen others injured after a stolen 18 wheeler was driven into a building today. this was the scene at the texas department of public safety in brenham. that's about 90 miles from austin. the driver, who's 42 years old, was arrested. police say he was. the crash may have been deliberate. authorities say the man was told he wasn't able to renew his commercial driver's license yesterday. they say he returned to the office today and plowed the big red tractor trailer right into the building. >> this is a sad day for dps and for all the people that were involved. uh- all the customers that we had in our building today. uh- for today's incident, other counties, authorities are still investigating at the scene . >> coming up, a south bay

sdsu's public library authorities say the suspect is a sophomore at the university. he was taken to santa clara county jail and charged with four counts of arson. both arson attacks happened in the men's bathrooms at the martin luther king junior public library. the first fire was set on easter, then another on monday. the suspect was being held on $400,000 bail. >> a business in downtown san jose is struggling after its third major break in this year. the latest involve their safe being stolen and now the owners are demanding that the city make some changes. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey

explains how the city says it hopes to curb crime downtown. >> since 2017, guildhouse has been an entertainment destination for gamers in downtown san jose, but it's also been a hot spot for crime. eight break ins total three this year, and the latest has founder kevin wick at a breaking point. >> it's a bigger problem than it should be, and the reason we're talking about it now, in the past, we've always kept it under wraps. and, that wasn't working. >> and the event on march 26th was different. just after closing down for the night, owners say burglars cut a hole through the back door of the guild house. surveillance footage captured them stealing their safe. co-owner david faria says the thieves evaded security put in place after previous break ins, including a motion sensor on the door that was cut open. the sensor is it gets out here. >> it doesn't get directly under the door. they were under it and they went straight through our storage room into our office. >> every time we've had a break in, we've increased our cameras. we've increased our, closing

procedures, we've increased our locks. and it just is not helping. >> besides the loss of stolen goods, it cost to repair damage and beef up security. it's somewhere in the ballpark of $50,000. >> we're a small business. small businesses operate on very thin margins. this is just one more hit that, you know, we didn't want to take. >> theft has been a major problem in the sofa neighborhood. wick says. academic coffee, original joe's and touchstone climbing have all been burglarized this year. city leaders met with guildhouse owners friday in an attempt to tackle the problem. we're going to keep pushing hard to properly staff our police department. >> i'm going to continue to advocate for the rest of the system to hold people accountable, particularly when they are repeat offenders, as we've talked about before and we'll continue to lean into technology like the crime capture program after repeated attempts to stop the problem on their own. >> these owners hope anything can make a difference. >> not because we want to make it feel like san jose is not a safe place to have a business,

are getting a look at the proposed design before the city council votes on it next week. >> abc seven news reporter ryan curry has the story. for decades, this pool has served walnut creek. the olympic size clark swim center hosts a variety of swimming events, but some say its age is starting to show. >> this pool is an anchor of the community and to improve it, to rebuild it. it's 50 years old. they hold swim lessons here, lifeguard training and year round competitive swimming. >> but the current state of the pool limits what they can do. >> you can no longer teach a person how to dive into less

than five feet of water, and the current facility only has a single five foot lane, which means swim meets or any event that involves diving is a challenge. >> the city is planning to build a new one. this is the latest design the council will vote on next week. it contains a brand new, deeper olympic size pool, a smaller pool and a playground. they will build new offices and locker rooms, a project that could cost around $77 million. >> the priority for the aquatic foundation was to see that the needs of the community are met. >> mike heaney is head of the group that represents a lot of the programs using the pool. he says the city needs to build a new one, not just to replace the old one, but to also turn it into one of the top aquatic centers in the bay area. well there's a huge need for facilities that can host competition. >> there are few and far between believe it or not, most of the facilities in the bay area are older facilities. >> no one from the city was available to do an interview, but they did tell me this old pool has to go. they're spending

islands to be exact. tomorrow's forecast. oakland 100% chance it's going to be rainy. it's going to be breezy. 58 degrees honolulu 82 degrees. scattered showers. kona 30% chance of showers. kahului. you're looking at 85 degrees in lihue. 78 with a 50% chance that it's going to be wet out there. looking at live doppler seven, it's certainly going to be a wet, windy, and colder day as we head towards your saturday. here is the storm. it's a very large storm and a cold one for this time of year, so we're already seeing those clouds beginning to move in across many parts of the north bay along the coastline. we'll have to wait for the rain. it's not here yet. 50s and 60s on your temperatures. a beautiful view from our pier 39 camera tonight. clouds up late night rain tomorrow a wintry mix. thunderstorm chance and sunday. we're talking about scattered showers, but it's not going to be a complete washout for your weekend plans. level one storm coming in for tomorrow. expect brief downpours, gusty winds, chance

of thunder and hail and some snow over our highest peaks between 3 and 4000ft. so as we go hour by hour, the winds will definitely be coming up. it's going to be gusty as we head into tomorrow. and here's a look at the rain. so at 11 p.m. it's first coming into the north bay and then as we are sleeping and hopefully you're still sleeping as 6:00 tomorrow morning, it's going to be coming down. rainfall will be heavy at times. there will be some snow up around the interior portions of lake and mendocino counties. also, mount hamilton looking at snow and the santa cruz mountains may actually see a few snow showers as well. scattered showers are going to continue to well into the afternoon and evening. you might even hear a clap or two of thunder as we will see some downpours in the evening hours as well. sunday is just spotty showers most of the day. it's just going to be a mix of sun and clouds, so you have that opportunity to get outside and do any outdoor activities you have planned now. rainfall projections 1800s in ben lomond. so you're thinking or brentwood,

excuse me? you're thinking that's not a lot of rain. but then you look at coastal areas like half moon bay, ben lomond, santa rosa, over an inch of rain, snow over mount hamilton, santa cruz mountains looks like mount hamilton. and the interior areas of lake and mendocino counties. the higher elevations have the best likelihood of seeing the highest snow totals tomorrow morning. it's going to be a stormy start, 30s and 40s. it is also going to be cold, and it's going to be chillier than today. today we already saw the double digit drop in temperatures for some areas, along with the winds tomorrow afternoon, 40s to 60s. for your highs, the accuweather seven day forecast. most of you will fall in that 40s 50s range. other than san jose wintry mix and the chill tomorrow it's a level one, a one for sunday. but like i said sunday is your better day to get out. monday we begin the drying process and the warming gets underway. it really kicks into high gear midweek when you see those 70s and 80s around the bay and inland. 60s coast side. but we'll bring you the spring weather back again. okay just it's on pause. okay. diane and diane, i know you guys don't
