seven. good evening. thank you for joining us. >> i'm dan ashley and i'm dionne lim. that violent heist happened at one of oakland chinatown's oldest jewelry stores. the damage done is simply remarkable. but despite all of this, the store owner says their vow to keep it open is stronger than ever, and they're pledging to move forward in the wake of this crime. you know and terror that unfolded at fung jewelry in oakland's chinatown wednesday, just after noon. >> it happened so fast, is unlike anything the family owned business has ever experienced in their more than 40 years in operation. >> we've been robbed, you know, a few times before, but not at this level of brazen magnitude. >> eight individuals with, you know, two getaway cars and, you know, guns drawn. >> watch as tony and 69 year old mother diane ducks for cover and screams for help as those eight individuals smashed nearly every single case. with no security guard on duty at the time, her 76 year old husband comes

storming in, wielding a firearm, which scares the suspects away. >> if he didn't do that, then they would have just kept going. >> their american dream and the majority of the store at least like 85% 90% gone in less than a minute. >> my mom was, you know, devastated. my dad was broken. >> a devastating blow made worse after the family let their business insurance lapse due to rising premiums. >> her entire life's work savings gone in a few minutes. it is rough. you know, my mom is the leader of the pack, and she's been running the business as she suffers, i. i kind of suffer through the same pain. >> crime in the area is what prompted tony to become executive director of the oakland chinatown improvement council. despite what happened, he remains optimistic. >> i've seen tremendous progress, even though it doesn't feel like that in terms of cleaning and safety ambassadors. there's a lot more out there with the night patrols and we have our walking police officers during the pandemic. we did. >> but is he optimistic enough to stay in business?

achievements on and off the field, those were eclipsed by his 1995 trial in the killings of his ex-wife and her friend, which became a spectacle seen around the world. >> abc seven news reporter tara campbell is here now with a closer look at symptoms. simpson's remarkable life and legacy. >> yeah, dan oj simpson's family taking to social media today to say he passed away surrounded by his children and grandchildren, simpson died in las vegas. he'd been living there since 2017, when he was paroled after serving after serving nine years in a nevada prison for armed robbery. o.j. simpson, the san francisco native as popular as he was polarizing, has died. >> mr. simpson's life mirrored. the human predicament triumphs and tragedies. simpson's athleticism evident from a young age growing up in potrero hill, going on to an all-american football career at usc before spending 11 seasons in the nfl.

entitled action, find the defendant or or ethel james simpson, not guilty of the crime of murder. >> two years later, simpson was sued in civil court by the parents of nicole brown simpson and ron goldman and found liable for their deaths, his assets seized and ordered to pay $33.5 million in restitution to both families, but only ever paying a fraction. >> in many ways, he moved to florida to avoid having to pay these judgments, and it will be a question as to just what is left, if anything, to compensate the goldman family and nicole's family. >> stephen clark is a legal analyst and says the oj simpson trial was a watershed moment in america. >> the o.j. simpson case was at the intersection of many social issues in america. certainly you look at the issue of race relations and how that played potentially into this verdict, and also the issues of domestic violence and he says the o.j. simpson trial also took on the issue of affluence and the

justice system. >> the issue of wealth in america was also addressed. >> oj simpson had an incredible team of lawyers, and many people feel he got away with murder. >> now, members of simpson's defense team also became well known across america. during the trial. lead defense attorney johnnie cochran died in 2006, but his law firm today sharing their condolences, cochran was perhaps best famous for urging jurors to acquit after a pair of gloves seemed not to fit. simpson if it doesn't fit, you must acquit. that's right, as we all remember so well. >> yeah, and i just remember the tremendous world attention on this. and dan, you covered this trial. you covered the verdict. i cannot imagine what that must have been like. yeah, it was a surreal experience. >> i was there the last two weeks of the trial in october of 95, during the verdict, when it was read, and it was just an intense experience. it was in fact a circus. we have a little clip. the verdict in the simpson

case is finally in, but the jury is still out on how this so-called trial of the century will ultimately affect our perceptions about justice in america. dan ashley, channel seven morning news that report, of course, for the morning news for abc seven and, you know, during the final two weeks as it really intensified, there were hundreds of people every day outside the courthouse. and the day the verdict was coming in, hundreds, maybe thousands. and there was a tension in the air, diane, as people were curious as to what the reaction would be. guilty, not guilty and how people would respond. there was a bomb threat when i was there, and they kicked all the media out of the media compound across the street, but we didn't go. my photographer and i hid and kept reporting from behind the media compound during the bomb scare, and when the verdict was read, we were all a little stunned. we a lot of people expected it to be a hung jury, and maybe he would be tried again and when it was when the it was announced not guilty, we all paused for a moment to make sure we heard

correctly. and then the crowd just erupted. it was it was an amazing scene. it felt strange to be there, but you knew you were watching something that the world was watching and it was history. >> yeah. to be witnessing it on the front lines. and then to have the responsibility of bringing it to the masses is pretty tremendous. yeah. >> it was a remarkable experience. i bet. all right. well, for more on oj simpson's life and death check out all of our stories and reporting on this at abc seven news.com. >> moving on now, a man has been arrested for allegedly vandalizing a mosque in san francisco. the district attorney says she intends to prosecute the case as a hate crime. surveillance video shows a man using a skateboard to smash six windows at the masjid al-tawhid in nob hill last thursday. we have blurred his face as he has not yet been formally charged. investigators say the man returned on tuesday attempting to smoke inside the local council on american-islamic relations. had this to say tonight. this arrest sends a clear message that hate driven behaviors will not be overlooked and serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges we face in

combating islamophobia. also new at 11, the search is on for a teenager who disappeared swimming in the russian river. today, the sonoma county sheriff's office says the teen was last seen near steelhead beach, north of forestville. the swimmer is believed to be 15 years old, according to the santa rosa press democrat investigators used divers and drones along with helicopters to search. a second teen, who was found was taken to the hospital, but there is no word on their condition. >> all right, let's turn now to the weather as we take a live look at our sutro tower camera. it's dry tonight, but changes are coming as we head into the weekend. >> yeah. to talk more about those changes, let's get to meteorologist sandhya patel for a look at the forecast. hi, sandhya. hi there. >> yeah, and diane and dan, we are expecting some major changes over the next couple of days. so let's take a look at another live picture from our mount tam cam as we look towards sutro tower, a sign of what's to come. the marine layer is regrouping. temperatures have dropped. it is running five degrees cooler from san jose to napa. as we check

out the wind. that's playing a role over the higher terrain is a little breezy. onshore winds 26. mount diablo temperatures right now have fallen there in the 50s and the 60s compared to 24 hours ago. and here's a look at your planner. mostly cloudy. we're going to start out with 40s, 50s, some fog, partly cloudy at noon and then much cooler day than today. no 80s tomorrow afternoon, 50s and 60s. here's a look at the storm that is on the way on live doppler seven. and as it comes in, you are going to notice that late tomorrow night some light showers develop. but it's really saturday that snow shows up on the peaks. wet weather at the lower elevations along with the wind and even a risk of thunderstorms forms. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast. i'll let you know if your weekend is a washout. dion >> all right, sandhya, many thanks. >> well, new developments. it's official. oakland international airport is moving ahead with a proposal to change its name to become the new name here. drumroll. the san francisco bay oakland international airport. here's a live look at the abc

seven oakland airport camera. the port of oakland's board of commissioners voted unanimously to approve the plan, which they say will improve geographic awareness and they hope, increase the number of travelers and airlines. that is, despite staunch opposition from san francisco international airport and san francisco city officials, sfo officials say the name change will lead to confusion, and san francisco city attorney has threatened to sue over trademark infringement. so we'll see what happens. >> now it's that viral video that got social media talking an attempted tow in the middle of traffic. now we're learning more about the company's history of problems. >> the cost of doing business forces the south bay brewery to go bust. what some say is leading to change in the beer industry as a whole. >> and california's case for reparations. we'll take you inside tonight's screening of our new eye opening i abc seven originals documentary. >> all that's ahead for you. but first, here's a look at what's coming up tonight on jimmy kimmel live! right after abc

car with two people inside while it sat at a red light. san francisco police are now looking into the incident, which we first told you about on abc seven news at 11 last night. the city attorney confirmed the towing company, specialty towing, is known to his office for violating state laws. prior to this incident. >> this company appears to be the same towing company that my office had previously moved to suspend an and to bar from receiving city contracts after viewing the video, city attorney chiu said. >> now, before this incident, the city received complaints from multiple victims who were allegedly scammed by specialty towing. the city then blocked specialty towing and other towing companies under the same ownership from working with the city on enforcing parking laws in the south bay, a well known brewery has closed, the owner blaming a lack of revenue. >> but as the beer industry changes, other breweries are vowing to adapt and keep pouring for their loyal customers. abc

seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez has the story now from san jose, california. >> after a six year run, camino brewing co is shutting down in san jose. >> a little overwhelmed, you know, to be completely honest, co-founder alan kornstein said the difficult decision came down to economics. >> they're not seeing the volume of customers they once did pre-pandemic. >> we've seen a big shift. you know, people don't come out the way that they used to come out, and our business has primarily been driven by, you know, our community uh, you know, and the taproom sales. anthony raggio with drakes brewing company and a member of the bay area brewers guild, wouldn't describe the beer industry as struggling, but it is changing. >> you have seltzer, you have cider, you have now nonalcoholic beer. these are all vying for the same space at foxtail fermentation project in downtown san jose. >> the owners hope to bring in more than just beer drinkers. they offer fermented or plant

based foods. in march, they posted a picture of their empty space on instagram and asked the question what could they do better? >> so we just want to open up the conversation and say, hey, like, you know what? what is it that will bring you to this area to come in for lunch? you know, during the day, you know, not just at night. >> bravo said he's grateful for all the feedback and support, but when you start seeing the dominoes fall from places like anchor to our neighbors like camino, you know, it's scary to think that, you know, everything that you put into a business to survive is isn't enough. you know, as long as everyone that's listening, like the city and the community and all that, then we can all work together to make this a really thriving place. >> back at camino brewing co, sunday was the last day it was open for service. co-founder cornstein hopes local brewers embrace his talented staff and the community will visit other local taprooms. >> we don't want any more great san jose brewers to suffer the same situation happen. so you know, please just, you know, come out, support your local

breweries in san jose. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> all right. let's go back and talk about the weekend weather forecast. will what we've enjoyed the last couple of days continue? >> yeah, i feel like we've been looking to this cool down for, i guess, since the beginning of the week. sandra. >> yes. and dan and dion, we are in for some big changes. so wintry weather is going to return to the bay area this upcoming weekend is going to get wet, chilly, windy, snow on our local peaks. so be ready. here's the storm system that is going to bring about the changes. as you will notice, it is still in the pacific. let's talk about la nina first, and then we'll talk about the storm. so the climate prediction center, a branch of noaa, issued this today. and basically cpc said that the sea surface temperatures near the equatorial pacific have been coming down so cooler than average beginning to develop. and we are expecting to transition to la nina. 85% chance of this happening. where you go from el nino to neutral between april and june, and a

60% chance that la nina will develop this june through august. now, la nina is typically follow strong el ninos. of course, the million dollar question is what kind of a winter will we have? we don't have the answer to that. we'll find out as we get closer. and depending on how that event develops, whether it's a weak moderate or a strong la nina. so stay tuned. sfo camera we do know one thing's for sure the marine layer is beginning to reform. we're going to see some patches of fog. not just near the coast as we look at live doppler seven, but the north bay as well. right now we have that fog in half moon bay, visibility down to four miles. your temperatures in the 50s and the 60s running cooler than where they were running lower, i should say, than earlier today. look at the temperatures. they were well above average 2 to 12 degrees inland. highs in the 80s 60s coast side. but i will say some areas began to cool. golden gate bridge cameras showing you a little bit of a murky view tomorrow. sharp drop in temperatures late tomorrow night. spotty showers arrive and on saturday we're talking rain. snow on the peaks and the chill.

so we'll go hour by hour tomorrow morning. watch out for the fog. 40s, 50s to start off the day. in the afternoon, the clouds will be on the increase. the temperatures are going to remain lower than where they were today. so it is going to be a noticeably cooler day. watch out once again, like i said, for the fog, 40s and 50s to start the day tomorrow afternoon, it's going to be 57.5 moon bay to 67 degrees in antioch 69, san jose, 64. in santa rosa, 62, in oakland. the wind is going to come up onshore breezes picking up tomorrow evening, 31 miles an hour there along the coast, you will notice the gusty winds for saturday as well. and really it is going to be a chillier one for your saturday. so we'll time this out for you tomorrow night. the showers are right near the coast. by 7 a.m. saturday we're getting snow over our higher peaks, rain at the lower elevations, scattered showers for most of your saturday. this is a good day to be inside and then sunday we'll continue to see bands of showers. there is a chance of thunder between saturday and sunday. rainfall
