starts right now. >> good evening, i'm dionne lim and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. the dinner party hosts say the social gathering at their home was no place for the students political agenda. >> those gaza supporters say efforts to silence them ended in assault. >> abc seven news reporter tara campbell was at the dean's home tonight, where he held another social gathering for the students. >> yeah, dion and dan, we were actually at the dean's house tonight outside his house in oakland, and i was able to briefly speak with him. he didn't want to go on camera telling me that his statement that he posted today speaks for itself. we also spoke with a few students as they arrived. tonight's dinner did seem to go off as planned, where millions of muslims around the world fast . not only a protest getting heated tuesday evening at the home of the dean of uc berkeley's law school. okay you don't have to get aggressive. >> please leave our house. you are guests at our house. >> erwin chemerinsky and his

wife, law professor catherine fisk, hosting their annual dinner for students as muslim students, we refuse to break our fast on the blood of palestinian people. >> the uc has committed sending $2 billion to weapons manufacturers with what they use . >> and we're just giving fisk seem trying to take the microphone from the student, who is also the president of a group called berkeley law students for justice in palestine. >> you are not welcome. >> okay. you can call the police. >> no, you can call the police. >> i'm giving up. please stop touching her. >> in a statement, the student group saying this is a first amendment right, accusing fisk of assault. fisk's assault was a symbol of the deeper islamophobia anti-palestinian racism and religious discrimination that runs rampant within the university of california administration. uc berkeley's chancellor, responding to the incident in a statement, saying in part, while our support for free speech is unwavering, we cannot condone using a social occasion at a person's private residence as a

platform for protest. the dean in a statement wednesday also responding, saying in part, i am enormously sad that we have students who are so rude as to come into my home, in my backyard and use this social occasion for their political agenda. he goes on to say they asked the student to leave several times, as seen here. >> just please leave. if you don't want to be here, leave my house. >> students do not have a first amendment right to come to someone else's home, transform their dinner party into a political event. >> nico perino is a vp at the foundation for individual rights and expression. >> there is this misperception that a lot of students have across the country right now that taking over someone else's event, disrupting their event is an exercise of first amendment rights. and that's just wrong. you don't have the right to come to someone else's event and take it over. >> now, in his statement today, the law school dean also said he had recently been subject of

anti-semitic fliers posted in campus buildings and that security would be present for the last two dinners. dan and dion, why not? >> interesting story. all right. thanks very much, tara. >> well, getting your car towed can be a pain, but how about getting towed while you're driving? it's an alarming ordeal. one east bay couple experienced while running errands in san francisco. i spoke to them in a story you'll see only on seven. what the are you doing? that's the sentiment from the man who witnessed what happened to joanne and her husband. as they drove through downtown san francisco tuesday morning. >> we're at a stoplight and we're just minding our own business. >> while the couple were stopped along bush and montgomery, they thought the yellow specialty towing truck was moving toward a nearby waymo autonomous vehicle, but soon realized it was getting too close for comfort. >> he came from the side. he started doing the reverse, and all the lights came on. that's when we were like, okay, something is really wrong, and his lever came down. >> the tow truck makes several attempts to hook on to their 2017 toyota corolla. when the

light turns green, the waymo next to them drives off. but joanne, who requested we only use her first name, realized as her husband who's driving, is stuck in front of this black sedan. and we were freaking out. >> the first instinct was to make sure that we get away. >> fortunately, the black car backs up and joanne's husband is able to drive away. you can see the tow truck give chase, joanne says for several blocks. >> it's definitely really scary. >> we reached out to specialty towing via email and phone, but did not hear back. the company, along with two others, were charged by city attorney david chiu this past february for fraud and illegally towing parked cars. they're now prohibited from bidding or receiving city contracts. joanne and her husband tell me they were eventually able to lose the tow truck and drove back home to the east bay. they maintain they didn't do anything wrong and are still perplexed as to why they were targeted. >> full disclaimer i definitely paid off my car. there's no like, you know, late payments or anything. i paid my registration

uh- registration. >> she's planning to file a police report soon and is sharing their story to raise awareness for other drivers. >> be more like careful when they're driving around as well as like just making sure that if something kicks in or like if something doesn't look right, make sure you do your best to protect yourself. >> that's good advice. now, this video has been going viral on social media. thousands of people stunned by the truck driver's actions. we'll be sure to let you know if we hear anything back from specialty towing. we sure will. >> it is stunning. well, tomorrow's south bay leaders will warn the public about the invasion of a dangerous type of mosquito. santa clara county vector control officials say the mosquito has been found in east san jose after being eradicated in the county in 2022. they call the species aggressive. it's known to carry diseases like dengue and yellow fever. the county is asking residents to check their properties for standing water. that's where they breed uh. they can really multiply quickly, so check for

standing water. >> should landlords be able to refuse to rent to tenants with pets? a state lawmaker has put in motion an effort to ban property owners from refusing to rent to people with pets. tonight we take a deep dive into this effort. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez explains exactly how the bill could change rental laws. >> a bill that would limit landlords from denying housing to pet owners is making its way through the legislature. >> it's hard enough to find a place for us, let alone include that dog moms and cat dad's say it hasn't been easy navigating the rental market. >> somebody took a picture of me with him walking, and they call the office. >> martha rodriguez lives at a mobile home park and says she had to make her dog, marley, an emotional support animal to avoid trouble. >> they told me, no, they don't take pets. i have a business in the area, so i just offered, you know, financially or what kind of money is going to make them

say yes, you can bring the dog into the house and live here. >> assemblyman matt haney, who authored the bill, says 70% of california renters have pets, but only 30% of available rentals accept them in san francisco, only 21% of rentals on the market allow pets. >> landlords simply need to have a reasonable rationale for whatever limitations and restrictions that they're providing for. if you've got a brand new building, you can't just say no dogs or cats allowed. that's not reasonable property owners and associations are expressing concerns about the bill. >> what we're looking for is at least some consideration that there is a cost, and that currently under our security deposit law, the tenant can use that one month security to pay for the rent on the way out the door. that leaves us nothing for repairs to the unit. >> pini says the bill is about trying to strike a balance. it's not forcing every landlord to take a pet. he's currently in

negotiations to amend parts of the bill. maybe they can have a little bit more on the pet deposit to protect against damage. >> if it means that we get rid of the pet rent. this week, the bill passed out of the assembly judiciary committee and moves forward to the floor in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> tomorrow, the port of oakland will make a decision about a controversial plan to rename the oakland airport. the proposal is to change it to san francisco bay. oakland international airport. the goal is to attract more travelers and new airlines to oakland. however, the city of san francisco, its airport and city leaders have opposed this idea, calling it confusing. in fact, they hate the idea so much the city attorney has threatened to sue for trademark infringement. oakland airport officials say they've considered renaming the airport since 2013. >> all right, to the weather now. and we had above average temperatures today. we did really nice outside. >> will the sunny skies and summerlike warmth continue tomorrow? abc seven news meteorologist sandyha patel has

your 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandra. >> yeah, and dan and dion, since you guys loved it so much, we're going to keep it going for one more day. let me show you a live picture right now from our tam cam. there are some hints of fog out there. it is not everywhere. parts of the coastline dealing with the fog as we look at live doppler seven right now we also have some high clouds up above, but look at the visibility right now. half moon bay down to three miles. tomorrow morning at seven, you're going to have to deal with some areas of fog temperatures 40s and 50s, mainly sunny by noontime, those numbers rising at 4 p.m. it's going to be warm inland with low 80s once again, 60s coast side and then breezy and cooler by 7 p.m. we do have some major changes coming. i'll be back with a closer look in just a few minutes. diane. >> all right, sandhya. thank you. a rally supporting a bill that strengthens existing california gun laws was held in san francisco today. gun safety advocates gathered on the steps of city hall urging an appeals court to uphold senate bill two. it's all in response to a lawsuit filed by gun lobbying

groups to overturn the legislation. sb two requires people to be law abiding. citizens have strong training, and be at least 21 years old to access a gun permit. it also prohibits weapons in sensitive public spaces. mayor london breed joined advocates to demand guns remain out of places like parks, churches and schools. >> there's no way you want to see somebody walking through our playgrounds where our kids play with a gun. >> governor newsom signed sb two into law to counteract the supreme court's decision to roll back concealed carry weapons laws across the country. >> if you use uber, you'll want to know that the ride share service has added new safety options to its app. they include pin verification, giving riders the option to get a four digit code to make sure they're getting into the right car. a ride check lets a passenger know if a driver goes off course. there's also a new feature that can record the audio of your trip on your phone. in addition, riders can share their trip

information with a friend. the features are now available. >> california state workers are being ordered to report back to the office starting in mid-june. that's according to a memo from the state's cabinet secretary, anne patterson, that was shared with politico. there will be case by case exceptions allowed in that memo, patterson said in office, work enhances collaboration, cohesion and communication. since the pandemic, state agencies had been able to make their own remote work policies and exclusive invitation. >> to be sure, the bay area guests who are on the list for president biden's state dinner tonight in honor of japan's prime minister. >> what she's been able to accomplish is just, you know, no one has done it. >> it's remarkable. >> a former player of stanford, coach tara vanderveer shares her memories of college basketball's winningest coach as she retires from the game. >> we're on whale watch tonight. crews searching for an entangled whale off the bay area coast run into a complication. >> but first, here's a look at what's coming up tonight on

cook and kristi yamaguchi. tonight's dinner was covered in cherry blossoms to highlight japan's culture and to remind that a new year is always possible. biden's speech, heavily focused on the strong relationship between the united states and japan. >> it is the end of an era for women's college basketball coach tara vanderveer is retiring after 38 years with stanford university, and she has surely left her mark on the sport. she is the winningest coach in college basketball history with 1216 victories and three national titles. we spoke with one of her former players, who later competed against her as a coach. she told us more about her career and impact on women's sports. >> it's wonderful to be in the situation that she's in where she can go out on her own terms. she goes out, you know, at the top, and i'm very i'm happy for her more than anything. i think she has so much life ahead of her and she's touched so many of our lives and in so many just

winning the 2024 cif division two boys basketball championship . >> good for them. and congratulations. this was the boys team's first championship and the girls second. >> a search continues for an entangled gray whale off the coast of the peninsula. it was spotted tuesday morning with its tail caught in netting. the marine mammal center hopes to find and tag the whale sooner rather than later. and as they search, they're asking for the public's help as well. >> if they do see the whale, if they could report it to eight, seven, seven slosser whale or call channel 16 the us coast guard on your marine radio and stand by until trained responders show up. that is the best way to help this whale. >> now, the whale was initially spotted in late march off orange county, where partner organizations put a tracker and buoys on the animal to keep an eye on it until it was safe to remove the lines. unfortunately, though, the tracker stopped working so they had no idea

great it looks from this vantage point. temperatures today, 7 to 13 degrees above average. and with the high clouds tonight, we're holding in some of the heat from earlier in the day. temperatures are in the 50s and 60s. these look like high temperatures for you, but their currents seven degrees warmer in hayward compared to this time yesterday. up four in livermore, san jose and santa rosa. as we check out your high temperatures. it was 81 in napa. san jose got up to 82 in santa cruz, 80 in santa rosa and redwood city, 70 from san francisco to oakland to concord. now, don't get too used to this idea. livermore's average high is 68 degrees. tomorrow you're at 81. but notice the temperatures just taking a nosedive as we head towards your friday and saturday. and that's because this area of high pressure that's providing us with the warmth is going to start to move on. area of low pressure is developing. it's going to bring in a cold system that will impact our weekend plans. so right now on live doppler seven, we have not only

the patchy fog near the coast, but the higher clouds up above and the view from our east bay hills. camera you can see is just stunning. tomorrow the warmth holds inland for the end of the week, temperatures plunging and this upcoming weekend we are talking about chilly, wet and breezy conditions ahead tomorrow morning. 40s and 50s. to start the day. the fog will be limited to parts of the coast and the north bay. as we head towards the noontime hour. it's already really mild for most areas, except at the immediate coast. now, as we head towards early afternoon, we'll see some low 80s popping up. it is going to be a nice looking day with lots of sun. your temperatures in the morning, 40s and 50s. as i mentioned, the fog will be around the coast and parts of the north bay valley, so plan accordingly. might have a slower ride because of the visibility issues along the coast. south bay temperatures 81 in gilroy, los gatos, 80 in san jose, on the peninsula. you're looking at a nice day. san mateo and menlo park, low 70s, mountain view, 7460 degrees in half moon bay, san francisco 67 degrees. daly
