starts right now. >> and we begin tonight with that massive shakeup in the world of women's basketball. stanford legend tara vanderveer, the winningest coach in ncaa aa history, is retiring 45 years of winning, mentoring young women and becoming the standard bearer for college coaches. >> a remarkable legacy ending tonight. good evening. i'm dionne lim, and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. we want to go right to abc seven sports director larry bill with the latest on this true icon and legend leaving the court. >> absolutely kind of came out of the blue. but the more you think about it, it really makes sense. long before caitlin clark and uconn's dominance, tara vanderveer had the program in all of college basketball at stanford. and tonight the school announced that tara is retiring after 45 years of coaching, 38 of them with the cardinal. vanderveer won national championships with stanford in 1990, 1992 and just a few years ago. back in 2021. we're basically talking about basketball royalty here. tara,

at age 70, leaves as the all time winningest coach in college hoops history. male or female, with 1216 victories, just 271 losses. among those expressing their admiration tonight, warriors head coach steve kerr. >> i love tara. she's amazing, and we've connected quite a bit in the bay, she's come to our practices. i've seen her down on their campus, i have so much respect and admiration for her. and, my initial reaction is, i'm thrilled for her. she can go water ski, and she loves to water ski. i know, so congrats on an amazing career. >> tara led team usa to a gold medal at the olympics in 1996. she's guided many of her players to the wnba. now there is a succession plan in place. longtime assistant kate pay is in talks to take over as stanford's new head coach. as to why now, the world of college sports is changing rapidly, and stanford has some unique

challenges in terms of recruiting players. we'll get into that later on in sports. but as steve kerr said, she can water ski to her heart's content now. good for her. >> yeah. you know, it's an interesting time because women's basketball is really taking off in a whole new way. yeah, and she's leaving the stage. but she certainly well, you know what? >> she built the foundation upon which others have succeeded. yeah. >> all right, larry, thank you. all right, all right. >> our coverage of tara vanderveer's retirement and record career continues ahead in sports, as larry mentioned. and tomorrow we'll have her remarks on abc seven news.com and the abc seven bay area app only on seven. >> tonight, for the fourth time in a year, a well-known oakland donut shop is robbed. security camera video shows thieves, one of them armed with a golf club, ripping out the cash register. abc seven news reporter j.r stone talked to those at the colonial donuts and city leaders about what they're doing to help fight crime. >> this is surveillance video of a recent robbery at the colonial donuts lakeshore location in oakland. and no, we have not

shown it to you before, but we have shown you this past robbery there. and this second pass robbery and this third. i think one of the assailants also, brought in a golf club, and i'm not sure what he was intending to do with it to cause intimidation or cause harm, but. >> yeah, so this would be the fourth time we got robbed within not even a one year span. >> ping yamamoto runs colonial donuts. her family has owned the business for 40 plus years. she says since the robbery started, they have installed a service window that is cashless and used instead of the front door during overnight hours. but this happened at 6 a.m. during a shift change. >> we got customers telling us like, can you please stay open? we really need you. you're you know, you're such a important institution in oakland. but it's hard. i won't lie, being a small business owner in oakland right now is very, very tough. >> some in the community are

angry. seneca scott took part in a rally outside colonial donuts last december, and says more officers are needed on oakland streets. >> when we walk outside of our houses every day, people are not feeling safe. our businesses absolutely will continue to close if they don't get immediate support. >> oakland district two council member nikki fortunato bass says she is actively working with police, business owners and community members on public safety measures. police have even told her that some of these strategies are leading to crime reductions. >> we have increased community policing in our business areas with foot patrol, so there are now crime reduction teams. we are in the process of identifying a location on grand avenue to start, where there would be a police resource office. >> while that would likely be on grand avenue, it would be in close proximity to where this latest fourth robbery happened at colonial donuts in oakland. j.r. stone, abc seven news your

voice, your vote. >> an unprecedented silicon valley congressional race just got wilder tonight. two people are asking for a recount of the primary results in that race, which ended in a tie. the requests came in just before the deadline tonight. former san jose mayor sam liccardo secured a spot in november's runoff to represent district 16. in the primary election, but it was a tie for second with assemblyman evan lowe and santa clara county supervisor joe simitian coming in with the exact same number of votes. really remarkable. all three will appear on november's ballot unless it's a recount ends up with different results. it's unclear tonight whether the people who asked for the recount have ties to any of the campaigns, but that could quite be likely. >> time now for an abc seven news at 11 deep dive on one of the biggest challenges facing our state. tackling homelessness is a critical part of building a better bay area. but a scathing new audit says california isn't tracking whether the billions

we're spending are actually paying off. the state spent more than $24 billion on homelessness over the last five years, but the audit says we aren't gathering data to figure out whether it's worked. the report singled out san jose for failing to track whether its programs are cost effective. this is more than a money problem, as well, the audit says. it's stopping us from finding better solutions is just validates everything that advocates have been saying for a long time. >> we've been saying, where's the responsibility? where's the accountability? and we were right. >> the lawmaker behind the audit hopes to create a framework for the state to collect better data . now, it's against that landscape that leaders in san jose approved two homelessness policies they say will require significant investments. the laws will force encampments away from schools and limit where rvs can be parked in the city. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez continues our deep dive on student safety is a priority. >> this is a big issue, and it's

going to require a big solution on educational park drive in east san jose, a row of rvs and large vehicles are parked right outside school gates. >> on tuesday, city council members unanimously passed three ordinances that limit rv parking and encampment. the mayor says the goal is to make schools safer while we are working to build basic, dignified shelters, safe parking sites and more affordable housing, they should not have to deal with those conditions right next to their school every day. >> it would create a 150 foot no encampment zone for tent encampments around schools and then gives the city the tow authority for oversize vehicles, whether or not they are lived in, if they pose a public safety risk right around schools, the city says they will pilot three specific schools regarding oversize vehicles. >> kipp collegiate is one of them. this will allow the city to scale and see how they will need to enforce at other

schools. >> this is not a parking issue, although i can see it as an easy cop out. >> some homeless advocates say these large vehicles are the only thing that keep people sheltered. >> the rv parking sites one are not big enough and they have too many barriers, and they're turning down people that are applying. >> the mayor and students from kipp san jose collegiate say the new policies are not meant to criminalize homelessness. alfredo hernandez, a senior and advocate for change at his school, said incidents of homeless trespassing on campus or altercations as students leave campus should not be tolerated. >> i've realized that this has become a norm for them where they're not even faced to this point, so i'm hopeful for the future. and i'm also hopeful that schools across san jose will be very secure and safe, because of this. >> in san jose. lauren martinez abc seven news. >> all right, let's turn to the weather now. a gorgeous spring day. >> wasn't it nice? abc seven news meteorologist sandyha patel

is here with a look at an even warmer day ahead in the 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandy, i know it's hard to believe, but temperatures are going to soar tomorrow into the 80s. >> dan and diane, i want to show you live picture right now. guess what is back? the fog. this is why it's also going to feel like summer. this is from sutro tower, san francisco under that fog layer and it is around near the coast where visibility on live doppler seven down to six miles in half moon bay. so watch out in the morning temperatures right now. most areas still in the 50s, 48.5 moon bay. as we look at the north bay 56 in calistoga. so still hanging on to some of that warmth, here's a look at the day planner tomorrow morning. morning fog. we're looking at 40s and 50s, temperatures rising by noontime into the 80s for the afternoon. this is where it's going to feel like summer 60s coast side and still warm inland at 7 p.m. don't get too used to it, because look at our rain chances. they're going up towards the end of the week and just in time for your weekend closer look at the timeline. coming right up. dan. >> okay, sandy, thanks very much

. a group of state lawmakers today announced a package of bills aimed at decreasing retail crime. the package includes seven measures, and lawmakers expect to add about five more. one key component would expand tools for police to arrest people for shoplifting. the legislation would also add railroad police to fight cargo theft, and there are guidelines for keeping repeat offenders in custody. lawmakers did not say when they'll vote on these bills . >> a lawsuit seeking to block california's transgender sanctuary state law has been dismissed. the law provides legal protections to people who travel here for gender affirming care and protects medical staff as well. california attorney general rob bonta issued a statement following the ruling, saying in part, the court's decision is a major win for transgender children and their families across the u.s. amidst a growing assault on lgbtq plus rights. >> coming up, a whale tangled in fishing net, a scientists racing now to the bay area to help new details on how far this whale

of this whale for weeks and have been attempting to free it. visbeck says it was first spotted already tangled off the coast of orange county at the end of march. >> we were actually able to attach our satellite tag to it, in a couple of poly balls. and the reason that we do that is to actually slow the whale down and to bring it to the surface, visbeck says. >> when his team approached the whale to try and untangle it down south, it became aggressive and they had to stop. the idea behind the tracking device, he tells me, was to keep an eye on it as it swam further north on its way to feeding grounds in alaska. once the whale became more tired out, the team would try to untangle it again. but visbeck says the tracking device stopped working and they lost track of the whale until he was spotted tuesday. here near the bay area. >> it's really wrapped and caught on that tail and it's not going to be an easy task to get it off. >> after being sighted tuesday morning, news of the entangled whale spread online. researchers from the marine mammal center, noaa and other groups went out to try and gather more information on the situation.

san bruno resident tony corso saw it on a facebook group and went out and shot the drone video with others looking on. >> there was just a general consensus that this was horrible and this should not have happened. >> fishbach says he's hoping they'll know more in the coming days, about when might be the best time to approach the whale and try and get that gillnet off once again. in the meantime, he and his colleagues are asking for the public's help in keeping an eye on the whale and reporting any sightings of it in san francisco. tim johns abc seven news. >> officials are investigating what caused flaring at the chevron refinery in richmond earlier today. smoke started coming from the building just before 1:00 this afternoon. chevron says the flare was sulfur dioxide in the form of gas. that was being released in the air. the flaring was declared a level one, meaning it caused no public health threat. >> strong reaction tonight to the controversial ruling from the arizona state supreme court, furthering restrictions restricting abortions in the

state to an almost total ban. the court is upholding a ban that dates back to 1864, before arizona was even a state, the only exception for legal abortion. now is if it saves a mother's life. one arizona lawmaker responded, speaking about her own real life experience after a failed pregnancy. >> a couple of weeks ago, i had an abortion. somebody took care of me. somebody gave me a procedure so that i wouldn't have to experience another miscarriage. the pain, the mess, the discomfort. and now we're talking about whether or not we should put that doctor in jail. >> under the law, doctors who perform abortions could face up to five years in prison. new research from the cdc shows an alarming number of women between the ages of 50 and 74 are not getting potentially life saving mammograms, the study found. >> the more health related social needs a woman had, the less likely she was to get a

mammogram. health related social needs includes issues like having no food, a car or a job. about a third of socially vulnerable women miss their recommended mammogram. breast cancer kills more than 40,000 people each year in the united states. a beloved local ice cream company is in a sticky situation. >> a former employee is suing, saying humphry slocombe forced him to skip meals to make sure his ice cream deliveries didn't melt. >> the lawsuit claims the bay area ice cream chain denied delivery drivers over time and regularly interrupted meal breaks if workers got them at all. the plaintiff claims humphry slocombe pushed drivers to make deliveries as fast as possible, so the ice cream would not melt. >> he's asking the company to repay workers for the overtime he claims they never got. humphrey slocombe didn't get back to us with comment tonight. well, just ahead, everything is coming up. wildflowers in the bay area this week. super bloom season is here. poppies are
