celebrations well into the morning. >> from abc news in new york this is america this morning. >> good morning everyone i'm andrew dymburt and i'm rhiannon ally. >> we begin with a foiled plot to launch a terror attack on us soil. an idaho man is under arrest, accused of planning a suicide mission targeting local churches on behalf of isis. >> abc's christiane cordero joins us now with the chilling details. good morning. christiane >> andrew rhiannon, good morning to you. the fbi arrested the man on saturday before he could carry out his alleged plan. authorities say 18 year old alexander scott mercurio pledged his allegiance to isis. charging him with trying to provide support and resources to the terror group, mercurio is accused of planning to attack people attending churches in idaho, according to the charging documents, his attack plan involved using flame covered weapons, explosives, knives, a machete, a pipe and ultimately firearms. investigators believe

mercurio may have been motivated by the attack last month in russia, where an isis group took responsibility for killing 144 people at a concert hall complex near moscow. >> it's fairly common for copycat crime to occur where for would be suspects. see an attack, note that it's successful and then they start thinking that they can pull off something. maybe just as successful. typically when you look at these isis fighters, their goal is to go to a location and kill as many people as possible. he talked about using knives, fire and possibly weapons, if in fact he did launch, that had the possibility of harming a lot of people. >> mercurio is currently in custody awaiting his initial court appearance. he faces a maximum of 20 years in federal prison if convicted. rhiannon. >> christiane, thank you so much for that. now to the war in gaza

and word of a new deal on the table. sources say hamas is considering a proposal by cia director bill burns. it calls for the release of 40 hostages in exchange for an unknown number of palestinian prisoners and a six week ceasefire. and today, vice president kamala harris is sitting down with the families of american hostages held by hamas. the meeting comes as prime minister benjamin netanyahu just announced there is a date set for an israeli offensive in rafah, where more than a million palestinians have fled the fighting. >> former president trump is under fire after declining to voice support for a national abortion ban. his latest bid to delay his new york. hush money trial was just rejected, and the special counsel is calling on the supreme court to deliver a legal blow to trump's immunity claim. this morning, special counsel jack smith is now urging the supreme court to reject former president trump's claim that he's immune from prosecution in the 2020 federal election case. in a brief filed with the court, smith writing a bedrock principle of our constitutional order is that no

person is above the law, including the president. in a separate case, a new york appellate judge denied trump's last ditch attempt to delay his criminal trial, where he's accused of falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments to star stormy daniels. the judge released the questionnaire given to potential jurors, asking them if they ever attended a trump rally or belonged to a group such as qanon. the proud boys or antifa. opening statements are now tentatively set for next monday. trump denies daniels claim and has pleaded not guilty to all criminal charges. meanwhile, trump is facing backlash from both sides after releasing a new statement on abortion, saying the matter should be left up to individual states and whatever they decide must be the law of the land, in this case, the law of the state. abortion rights have won in all six states where it has been on the ballot, including in conservative states like kansas, kentucky and ohio. president biden, pointing out that 21 states have banned or severely limited access to abortion since roe was

overturned. >> donald trump just endorsed every single state ban on reproductive care nationwide. donald trump is the reason rose ended. >> some republicans are now criticizing trump for not endorsing a nationwide ban, including trump's former vice president mike pence called trump's statement a slap in the face to the anti-abortion voters who supported him in 2016 and 2020. trump says he supports exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother. he has not said if he also supports exceptions for the mother's health. >> president biden unveiled his latest effort to free up more americans who are bogged down by student debt. the plan, announced during a visit to wisconsin, includes debt cancellation for those who now owe more than they borrowed because of runaway interest, as biden seeks to energize young voters, he said the new round of forgiveness will impact 30 million people, while college degree still is a ticket to the middle class, that ticket is becoming much too expensive, much too expensive. >> so far, the administration

has canceled $144 billion in student loans for nearly 4 million americans. >> las vegas police say what started as a deposition during a custody dispute ended in a double murder suicide at a law office, investigator say ashley and dennis prince were shot to death by joe houston, an attorney and ashley's former father in law. police say houston then took his own life and prosecutors are defending their involuntary manslaughter case against alec baldwin for the shooting on the rust movie set. baldwin has pleaded not guilty for the death of a crew member who was shot when a gun held by baldwin went off. the actor has asked a judge to dismiss the case, but prosecutors say the case should go forward because baldwin missed concerns about the inexperience of the film's weapons supervisor. they also claim baldwin compromised safety on the set and had no control of his emotions, and lied to the media about what happened. >> now to michigan, where it's sentencing day for jennifer and james crumbley, the parents convicted of manslaughter after

their son committed a deadly school shooting. while the crumbleys trials were held separately, the court decided to sentence them on the same day. this morning, it is judgment day for jennifer james crumbley, the first parents in the u.s. found criminally responsible for a school shooting committed by their child guilty of involuntary manslaughter, guilty of involuntary manslaughter. their son, ethan crumbley, is serving a life sentence after he opened fire at oxford high school in michigan, killing four students in 2021. earlier this year, two separate juries in back to back trials found jennifer and james guilty of four counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection to the deaths of those students. prosecutors argued the crumbleys did nothing to secure the gun. ethan used and ignored signs of his declining mental health. >> they could have prevented this shooting and saved these kids lives. >> state sentencing guidelines recommend a maximum of about seven years in prison, but

prosecutors are recommending 10 to 15 years, saying both parents have shown a chilling lack of remorse. james crumbley is asking for time served, saying he was wrongly accused and now wrongly convicted. jennifer crumbley has asked to serve her sentence on house arrest at her lawyer's guest house. the two are expected to appear in court together today, when the judge will hear impact statements from the families of the four victims, many of whom appeared at the crumbleys criminal trials. >> we can put people on the moon , we can build skyscrapers. huge monuments like the hoover dam, and we can't keep ourselves skills our kids safe in schools. >> just hours before the shooting, the crumbleys were encouraged to take ethan home after a teacher found a drawing of a gun and violent messages on his math assignment, but they declined. >> the solar eclipse is being called the most viewed

, mac and cheese, it's one tasty week on gma back now with satellite images of the francis scott key bridge. >> they show the bow of the container ship that brought down the span. still stuck underneath some of the fallen sections. salvage crews have started removing some of the debris from the collapse. now to a woman in arizona accused of poisoning her husband's coffee, agreeing to plead guilty, prosecutors said. melody johnson was captured on hidden cameras putting bleach into the coffee maker used by her husband. attempted murder charges will be dropped now that johnson has pleaded guilty to lesser charges. prosecutors are recommending two years in prison. she will be sentenced next month. >> country singer morgan wallen

is free on bond as he faces felony charges in nashville. wallen was arrested early monday, charged with reckless endangerment after allegedly tossing a chair off the roof of a bar. police say it nearly hit officers who were standing on the street. his attorney says wallen is cooperating and he's due back in court next month. >> now to the economic warning from the man in charge of america's biggest bank. he says certain factors may continue to fuel high inflation and bring interest rates as high as 8. here's abc's lionel moise this morning. >> the leader of the nation's largest bank, jp morgan chase, is sounding the alarm that interest rates could soar beyond 8% in the coming years, despite recent figures showing inflation has been cooling in his annual letter to shareholders, jamie dimon said there has been too much emphasis on the short termism and not enough focus on long tum trends, writing huge fiscal spending, the trillions needed each year for the green economy, the remilitarization of
