this is america this morning. >> a very good wednesday morning, everyone. i'm lionel moise. >> good morning, i'm alison kosik. andrew and rhiannon are off. we begin with a major earthquake hitting taiwan. yeah, it struck just as most people were heading to work. >> areas of southern taiwan have been the hardest hit, the quake also triggering tsunami waves. >> at least nine people are dead, but hundreds of people are injured or trapped. the deadly earthquake hit taiwan during the busy morning rush, suspending train service across the island of 23 million people. >> it started. it felt like it was up and down, shaking in the beginning. and then it started really like shaking side by side . >> the magnitude 7.4 quake was the strongest to hit taiwan in 25 years. violent shaking was felt in taipei, six hours from the epicenter. >> i was in the office at that time and people were holding on

to the doors because everything was falling off, and we wanted to get to the doorways in case something collapsed. >> books and other items flying off the shelves in this home. and this building in the city of hualien is now leaning on a 45 degree angle. the fire department says at least 26 buildings collapsed in the city, a popular destination for tourists on the island's east coast, about 11 miles from the epicenter. >> there have been, like rockslides, yes, in the mountainous regions. >> traffic was at a virtual standstill in some areas, with landslides and falling debris hitting tunnels and highways. the earthquake also triggered small tsunami waves measuring about one foot high, which hit the coast of japan. the tsunami did not cause any damage. the earthquake was also felt along china's coast. >> back in this country, the

other major story that we're following, a severe weather outbreak from the gulf coast to the ohio valley. ten people were injured when a possible tornado hit jeffersonville, indiana, just outside of louisville. the mayor, describing the damage there. >> he did some damage. i see some brick walls that have been knocked down, some roof roofs removed, but again, no structures can be replaced. and i think we're extremely lucky tonight. >> the storms also damaged buildings across the river in louisville, but no major injuries have been reported. the powerful wind did knock down though. this student at the university of kentucky. fortunately she is okay. just look at that video. several homes were also damaged in ohio and west virginia during severe storms yesterday. right now, the big threat is flooding and heavy wind in the northeast, and that could delay travel. today, a flood watch has been issued from virginia to new york. we'll take a closer look at the forecast in just a few minutes. we turn now to growing outrage over the israeli airstrike that killed seven aid workers in gaza,

including an american. >> president. biden is criticizing israel for not doing enough to protect civilians, but some critics want more action from the biden administration to hold israel responsible. abc's christiane cordero is here with details. christiane. good morning. >> good morning. alison. yeah. israel's military has apologized for the attack, calling it a grave mistake. but president biden says he's outraged. this morning, after an israeli airstrike in gaza killed the seven aid workers for the organization world central kitchen. president biden is criticizing israel, saying he is outraged and heartbroken by the aid workers deaths, adding this conflict has been one of the worst in recent memory in terms of how many aid workers have been killed. the group was traveling in a three vehicle convoy with two armored cars, world central kitchen says despite coordinating the route with israel's military, the group was hit while leaving a warehouse where they had just unloaded 100 tons of humanitarian aid. you can see the damage here a massive hole

in one vehicle, the world central kitchen logo visible on the roof. one victim, jacob flickinger, was a dual u.s. canadian citizen. >> these people are heroes. they run into the fire, not away from it. >> reports say israel believed a hamas operative was in the convoy, but sources say the strike was not on purpose, pointing to possible factors like the fog of war and fatigue. this is now the longest war in israel's history. prime minister benjamin netanyahu initially responded to the airstrike by saying, this kind of mistake happens during war. he later softened his approach while promising an investigation. meanwhile, here at home, new calls for the u.s. to pull back support for israel's military until the war in gaza ends. >> this world central kitchen, horror, is just one part of what the netanyahu war machine is doing. and in my view, the united states should not be giving another nickel, to israel

to continue this terrible war. >> israel also carried out an airstrike in syria monday, killing two iranian generals that strike carried out with precision. iran's consulate building was leveled while its main embassy next door remained intact. the pentagon, in a rare move, yesterday acknowledged israel's role in the attack while making it clear the u.s. had nothing to do with it. >> the u.s. did not conduct a strike in damascus. i would refer you to the israelis to speak to their strike. >> abc news selina wang pressed the white house on whether there's any red line that could result in changes to u.s. policy on military aid for israel. >> they're still under a viable threat of hamas. we're still going to make sure that they can defend themselves. and the 7th of october doesn't happen again. that doesn't mean that it's a free pass. you want us to hang some sort of condition over their neck? and what i'm telling you is that we continue to, to work with the israelis to make sure that they are as precise as as they can be. >> iran is vowing to retaliate for that attack on its consulate. now, as for the seven

aid workers, in addition to the american citizen, there were three british nationals, an australian and a polish national and a palestinian driver, allison. >> all right, christiane, thanks so much. in the race for president donald trump rallied with law enforcement officials in grand rapids, michigan. he emphasized the need for security on the southern border and highlighted the case of ruby garcia, a 25 year old michigan woman allegedly murdered by an undocumented immigrant. trump says he spoke with some of garcia's family. they had just his most contagious laughter. >> and when she walked into a room, she lit up that room. and i've heard that from so many people. i spoke to some of her family, but at least one member of ruby garcia's family denies that trump spoke to any members of her family. >> now to california and the search for answers. after sheriff's deputies were seen opening fire on a teenager they say was abducted by her own father. newly released video shows the fatal shooting of a

california teen back in 2022. 15 year old savannah graziano was allegedly kidnaped by her father. authorities issued an amber alert hours after they say her father murdered her mother a day later, san bernardino sheriff's deputy spotted her father's truck. >> there's a white pickup truck probably doing a hundred miles an hour east. >> 45 year-old anthony graziano leading them on a 70 mile pursuit. witnesses reporting shots were fired out of the driver and passenger sides of the truck. deputies then firing back. >> shots fired, shots fired. >> savannah got out of the truck wearing tactical gear and a helmet, dropping to the ground, then walking towards law enforcement on their command. non stop shooting her. >> he's in the car. stop! >> but that order to stop firing was not broadcast over the radio . savannah was shot and later died at the hospital. her father also killed. deputies say multiple weapons and ammo were found in the truck, but they say savannah was not armed and the

sheriff initially said savannah participated in that shooting. but they can no longer confirm that state authorities are investigating bird flu has halted production at the nation's largest producer of fresh eggs. >> roughly 2 million hens had to be destroyed at a facility near amarillo, texas. cal-maine foods says. bird flu was also detected at a michigan plant. dairy cows in texas, kansas and michigan have also reportedly been infected. officials insist there's no risk to the milk supply. >> nasa is now trying to confirm if this object is debris from the space station. it crashed into a home in naples, florida, crashing through two floors. we asked if nasa will pay for the repairs. it says it first needs to confirm if that object, which appears to be part of a battery, is indeed from the space station. >> time now for your wednesday weather. >> good morning. we're looking at the threat for severe

90,000. >> we're heading toward a increasingly cast system of those who can pay and those who can't. >> and this year, delays in financial aid notifications are posing an extra challenge for students trying to pick which school to attend in the fall. technical glitches with the more simplified free application for federal student aid or fafsa form have left millions of students in limbo, waiting to hear how much aid they'll receive. >> the fafsa form was not available all in october, as promised. instead end of december and at the end of december, it didn't work particularly well. there were a number of occurrences of crashing, and it needed to be revised for january. in response. >> some colleges are now pushing out deadlines for acceptance and enrollment deposits unclear of when this fafsa processing backlog will ease up. for now, experts say it's crucial for students and parents to keep the lines of communication open with schools in terms of what students can do at this time of
