now a grocery store parking lot is a crime scene tonight after an apparent gun battle in the gas line. it was just a terrifying trip to the store for shoppers in napa county who ran for cover as bullets started to fly. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm dan ashley. three people are in the hospital tonight because of that shooting at the safeway in american canyon. that store is on american canyon road, just off highway 29. police told people to stay away from the area around 430 this afternoon as they searched for the shooters. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone talked with shoppers who were there two cars with bullet holes in them, one here and one

there. >> the safeway gas station in american canyon nearby. safeway shoppers describe what it sounded like. >> i don't know what is an automatic versus a semi-automatic, but i do know it was not like a boom boom. it was like a bada bada dada for about five to 10s. >> tiffany bernard says she heard between 16 and 20 shots. police say there were at least two shooters. when we were there, we saw this shell casing that one and a third. in fact, as we were looking at this candy scattered all over the place, we noticed six more shell casings on the ground in the distance. >> i saw somebody running away from the scene, but you can just tell like something had happened wrong. and i pulled out and i could see a few, like a body or maybe two people who looked like they were on the ground. i'm not sure what occurred. i just, i went home, i knew i needed to

get out of there. >> officers say three male shooting victims were taken to the hospital. their condition is unknown. two others have been detained and are being questioned. the safeway gas station, where police believe the shooting took place right over there, is still roped off with yellow crime scene tape. the safeway parking lot still roped off with that crime scene tape as well. at this point, police don't believe that any innocent bystanders were shot. officers won't say what led to this shooting, only this. >> at this time, there's no current threat to the community. certainly. >> good to hear after a scene that caused quite the commotion, i was a little shook up. >> i'm just now starting to relax and calm down. but it's just awful. >> j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> very scary night, as you can tell. now, tonight, caltrans crews are trying to figure out how to stabilize a crumbling stretch of highway one in monterey county before we get more rain. the highway is closed near the rocky creek bridge

between carmel and big sur, after part of the road collapsed during saturday's storm. more than 1000 visitors and residents ended up stranded this weekend. caltrans has been escorting drivers past the crumbling lane this week. they'll build concrete barriers along the center of the road to give drivers a more of a buffer. no timeline yet for a permanent repair. >> this is my really first time in this part of the california coast, this area, and i wanted to see it all. and now i'm not able to do that. >> caltrans is telling all visitors to stay away while they work to reopen the road. all state parks in big sur are closed until further notice. highway one has been battered by the rough weather. this rainy season. landslides have closed it down several times over the past five years. that includes last march, when the highway was closed for months, a closure at pole slide is still in effect with the highway they're scheduled to reopen soon. we'll keep tabs on that. crews even had to suspend repair work along highway one because of other

will be with us. you know it's not going to last. i'll have the details on when we see the big changes coming our way in a few minutes. dan okay. >> lisa. thanks a lot. in the east bay, there's a battle brewing over what to call the oakland airport. officials want to add san francisco bay to the airport's name. the plan announced last week is getting a lot of pushback. as you might expect, abc seven news reporter tim johns looks at why sfo says this name change won't fly. >> one of the bay area's major airports could soon be getting a rebrand. last week, officials with the port of oakland unveiling a plan to rename the city's airport to become san francisco bay oakland international airport. >> studies have shown that over half of international travelers and nearly a third of domestic travelers do not know where oakland lies in the san francisco bay area. >> oakland officials say they believe the potential name change would help would be travelers clearly identify the airport with the bay area, but the proposal has gotten swift pushback from many on the other side of the bay in san francisco

and at sfo airport. >> our concern, especially for international travelers, is that somebody may book a flight thinking that they're going to one location, and only when they land do they realize they're going to a completely different airport. >> sfo says while they understand oakland's desire to attract more travelers through its airport piggybacks on its name is not the way to do it. concerns also raised by travel industry analyst henry harteveldt. >> i'm not surprised because i think it does risk creating confusion in the marketplace, harteveldt says. >> for years, more and more airlines have been cutting flights in and out of oakland. >> if they incorporate san francisco into the name they believe it will help attract more customers and aid. oakland believes that will help attract more airlines. >> while the name change isn't yet official, there's also questions over whether travelers would fly into the east bay city even if they knew where it was. here at sfo, we talked to

several international travelers who tell us they'd be skeptical to fly into oakland airport. that includes mohammed jalal, who was visiting from libya. mohammed tells us if he ever comes back, he'd still choose to fly into sfo, saying with more options and easier access to the city, it remains his preferred choice. >> the best option when i booked the ticket, they tell me you can use sfo in san francisco airport . >> the port of oakland commissioners are set to consider the name change at their meeting on april 11th at sfo airport. tim johns abc seven news. >> all right, let's turn now to the abc seven news advancer at 11. it's our way of getting you ahead and on top of some of the big headlines you'll hear more about in the days to come. and we'll begin with a bridge collapse in baltimore and the messy battle now over who should be at fault. the owner and manager of the cargo ship that rammed into the francis scott key bridge are looking to limit their legal liability, according to a court petition today, two singapore based companies jointly filed to cap their

liability at roughly $43.6 million. the disaster could amount to more than $1 billion in total losses, which could make it one of the costliest catastrophe catastrophes of its kind ever. a total of six people are presumed dead from the incident. the port is still blocked up and officials are hoping to clear out a working shipping channel in the days and weeks to come. our next adventure tonight is a looming strike in the south bay. thousands of santa clara county nurses will walk off the job starting tomorrow morning, the union is starting a three day strike over issues of pay, workplace conditions, staffing and other issues. it's the first strike in the union's history. >> we're asking to be able to live in the community that we serve. we're asking to be able to have safe staffing for our nurses and our patients, and for asking for the county to not do things that undermine patient safety. >> the union is asking for 15% wage increase through october

2025. it rejected the latest county proposal of 13. according to our media partners. mercury news, a county executive says, quote, we are taking all necessary steps to safeguard patients, employees and visitors from the impacts of any possible strike activity. end quote. and our final abc seven news advancer at 11 is the big meeting tomorrow over the future of the a's in oakland. the city of oakland is set to meet with the team over extending the team's lease at the coliseum. it's because any new stadium in las vegas won't be ready for another three years at least, and it's forcing the a's to explore their temporary options. the current lease expires at the end of this season. abc seven news is learning the city will offer to extend the team's lease for up to five years. an offer sheet obtained by abc seven news shows the city is now no longer asking the a's to change their name when they leave oakland, or guarantee the city get an mlb expansion team in the future.

tonight an abc news exclusive a conversation with ftx founder and bay area native sam bankman-fried. he's answering questions from prison. last week, the former cryptocurrency entrepreneur and son of stanford professors was sentenced to 25 years in prison. it's in connection with the explosion of implosion, i should say, of ftx, a global cryptocurrency exchange which resulted in an $8 billion loss for its customers. bankman-fried said he's haunted every day by what was lost. he says, quote, i never thought that what i was doing was illegal, but i tried to hold myself to a high standard and i certainly didn't meet that standard. he also says that he does not believe he received a fair trial, writing, quote, a one sided media frenzy and the defense's inability to get in critical evidence infected the whole process. bankman-fried plans to appeal his conviction. new at 11, another chance to

very prevalent out there and kids are very smart. they're very tech savvy, much more than we are. and but their decision making capabilities are not the best. >> to me, it's not shocking because i think the teens are super tech savvy. so this is just one other arm of that right now. >> the school has not identified who may be behind the alleged generated photos or the number of possible victims last month, beverly hills unified school district expelled five eighth graders for their involvement in using ai to generate nude photos of classmates and sharing them with others. >> it's like evolving so fast, but yeah, i think my reaction is obviously concerned just because , you know, you see things like this happen to big stars like taylor swift. so if taylor swift can't even be protected from things like this, then what about our kids? >> in a statement, laguna beach unified school district says we are required by law to keep student discipline matters confidential to protect the privacy and well-being of our students in any situation that arises, the safety and security

and pulled his pilot's license. developing news on a controversial plan from the u.s. fish and wildlife service, the agency is proposing killing roughly half a million invasive barred owls in an effort to protect the native northern spotted owl from extinction. the proposal is to cull the barred owl population by 470,000 from california, washington state and oregon over the course of three decades. but animal rights activists are pushing back hard, calling this approach unsustainable and unrealistic. the last living survivor of the uss arizona, the battleship that sank during the attack on pearl harbor, has died. luke hunter was 102 years old. he passed away today at his home in grass valley, about an hour from sacramento, surrounded by his three children. cotter's daughter says he suffered congestive heart failure. more than 1000 sailors and marines died on the arizona in that attack that launched the u.s. into world war two. qatar was

standing on the ship's main deck as japanese bombs dropped and worked to put out fires. in the aftermath. imagine what he saw that day. well, building a better bay area is our mission here. every day at abc seven news and making our home a more affordable place to live is certainly one of the biggest challenges. tonight, we're highlighting a breakthrough nearly a decade in the making that's an affordable housing complex just for teachers struggling to afford san francisco rents. applications open tomorrow for spots in this 135 unit building, located in the sunset district, it's currently still under construction in the sunset it. to qualify a teacher's household income must be between 42,000 and $160,000 a year. this project has been in the works for quite some time. the city blamed delays on the pandemic and school district budget cuts, but the district hopes the housing will help the district retain more teachers. >> we've been struggling with

staffing and recruiting and retaining, and so it means so much to be able to have our educators have an option in the city where they can be close to our schools and focus on what's happening at school, rather than worrying about affordable housing. >> the apartments are set to open in the fall. san francisco unified wants to develop two more properties like this for educator housing. our next breakthrough tonight changes making a san francisco neighborhood safer for cyclists. officials have been tracking speeds for three months now on arguello boulevard in the presidio from the arguello gate through washington boulevard. now, thanks to new safety changes, signage, etc, the data shows about 85% of drivers are going 6 to 8mph slower. the improvements come almost a year after a driver hit and killed champion cyclist ethan boys on that stretch of arguello boulevard, so some progress there to get drivers to slow down our final building. a better bay area breakthrough is
