conversation happening this week that could change the team's next steps. good morning and happy easter sunday. it is march 31st. i'm stephanie sierra. lisa is here. and full disclosure, we did not plan this. >> yeah, it's a little silly. i or cute i don't know. >> yeah. we're, you know, feeling very easter today. >> yes that's right happy easter. yes. it's going to be a nice day today. we will hold on to some clouds throughout the morning hours. and as we look at live doppler seven right now the activity is in southern california and we are underneath partly to mostly cloudy skies. 43 in fremont, with 49 in oakland and some upper 40s in the north bay. but compared to 24 hours ago, 3 to 5 degrees cooler from hayward to half moon bay. and a look outside that's mount tam there with all the clouds and partly sunny to partly cloudy to start out. we'll be in the low 60s by the afternoon. a mix of clouds and sun. not quite done with the rain yet, though. upper elevations north bay, east bay hills and the eastern santa clara hills could see some

news faithful across the bay area attended easter services. >> san francisco's grace cathedral started its easter vigil in darkness with the bishop lighting a fire to symbolize the resurrection, grace cathedral service today starts at 8 a.m. travel is picking up as people at airports or on the road, as people arrive to their easter and spring break destinations. you're looking at a live picture now from sfo this morning. the busy travel also comes as we get closer to the total solar eclipse. abc news reporter chuck sivertsen has more on the busiest days expected in the skies. reporter to my right, airports across the country have been filled with large crowds as travelers hit the sky to reach their easter or spring break destinations. >> on thursday, tsa says it screened 2.7 million passengers the most, so far this year and the largest number since the winter holiday season last year. in addition to large crowds, there have been some other

issues affecting airline passengers on friday, a united flight from tel aviv to newark was forced to make an emergency landing in orange county, new york, due to severe turbulence, and they said the flight was pretty rough coming in to newark. >> but we had multiple ambulances here from new windsor and multiple surrounding agencies. >> in a statement, united saying one passenger deplane due to a medical incident and a few other customers were seen by medical personnel for possible motion sickness, the high travel volume is expected to continue as thousands travel to cities in the path of the upcoming total eclipse of the sun, the faa says. the busiest day next week will be thursday, april 4th, with more than 50,000 flights set to take off, so you can expect some limited parking, even delays at airports right along the eclipse path from texas to maine. for those choosing to drive to their destinations, they're going to find higher prices at the pump, according to the faa, the national average for a gallon of gas is now 353, about $0.24 more than just one month ago, and

about $0.10 higher than last year. chuck sivertsen, abc news, new york. >> president joe biden proclaimed today, march 31st, as transgender day of visibility. the occasion is usually marked on this day each year, but that decision has now been criticized by some republicans because today is also easter. a christian holiday. in a statement, former president donald trump called the move appalling and insulting. transgender day of visibility began i 2009 as a day to celebrate transgender people and recognize the discrimination they may face. biden issues a proclamation march 31st every year. developing news now at least two people died after a small plane crashed. as it was trying to land at the truckee airport. yet saturday, it's not clear how many people were on board. witnesses reported seeing a fireball at the time of the crash, and emergency crews quickly put out the flames. power lines came crashing down, but thankfully no one on the

ground was hurt. the crash site is blocked off in the airport, is closed until 7 a.m. today we're learning more about a story we first told you on abc seven mornings a san francisco community wants answers after multiple fires broke out at two separate places on the same block within 24 hours. saint john the evangelist episcopal church was damaged early friday morning by a suspicious fire. now, the other fire happened saturday morning at a residential building on 15th and weiss streets. abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke to people worried an arsonist may be targeting their neighborhood. >> flames ripped through mission district apartment buildings early saturday morning, injuring two people and displacing ten more. the fire, about a block away from saint john evangelist episcopal church, where about 24 hours earlier, another fire forced it to shut the doors of its daytime shelter. >> we were worried that it was the church again, that someone had come back and wanted to

finish the job that they had started the night before, investigators now saying the church fire was set on purpose and they're looking for a suspect. we were lucky that the extent of our damage wasn't as bad as it could have been, but looking at our neighbor's building, it looks pretty bad. so i'm i don't know when those people will be able to go back. >> daylight exposing the damage from saturday's early morning fire. the building seemingly gutted. >> so initial reports told us that uh- vehicles on fire had spread to the building's. the flames had spread up the back of the buildings. these are what we consider uh- ordinary construction or wood frame buildings. these are older buildings. they catch on fire and spread very quickly. more than 100 firefighters battling to keep the blaze from engulfing nearby buildings, hitting too close to home for some. >> julian hatfield lives just three doors down. >> yeah, i mean two, two fires in the street and two nights is obviously alarming and yeah, not not a great not a great place to be staying at the moment. >> as for the cause of

saturday's fire, investigators are still trying to determine whether it was intentional. but the reverend says he wouldn't be surprised if the two are connected on the same block the same time, like setting the fire at almost exactly the same time. >> uh- and the night after. it seems like too much to be coincidence. >> tara campbell abc seven news new developments now in the effort to keep the a's in oakland, abc seven has learned the city will make an offer to extend the team's lease for up to five years. >> the a's lease at the coliseum expires at the end of this season, but its new stadium in las vegas won't be ready for another three years. the team is exploring a temporary home in sacramento or salt lake city, but oakland is trying to get them to stay. the offer sheet, obtained by abc seven news, shows the city is no longer asking the a's to change their name when they leave oakland or guarantee the city an mlb expansion team in the future. the city is set to meet with a's

go up to $20 an hour. it's a 25% jump from the state's current $16 minimum wage. the federal minimum wage continues to be just 7.25 an hour. some business owners are considering layoffs or closing locations to save on costs. others say they'll be forced to pass the cost on to you the next time you hit the drive through. >> now, 2024 has been a tough year to date. we have soft sales. we have declining traffic counts. so for a business owner, i mean that's the worst time to have to raise prices. but i see it as a necessity to, to, you know, comply with this law and then also stay in business. >> the minimum wage increase goes into effect april first. another massive lottery jackpot was on the line after someone hit the billion dollar mega millions on tuesday. it was powerball's turn with a drawing worth $935 million. and once

again, no one hit it. last night's numbers are 12, 13, 33, 50, 52 and the powerball is 23. the jackpot for the next drawing will be at least $975 million. and that drawing is tomorrow in the south bay a sellout crowd came out for the bay area's newest team, bay fc. it was the inaugural home game for the women's professional soccer team. abc7 news reporter anser hassan was there as things kicked off. >> reporter the goal to win the home opener. the first home game ever for bay fc. it was very good. >> it was really good. the second half, the other team was like attacking a lot. i think. so the ball was more on the on the other side. >> bfc was the first to score, but when the final whistle blew, the houston dash won 3 to 2 at paypal park in san jose. all the way from la. yeah the home game. >> yep i sure did. bought tickets like a month ago. >> lupita santoyo grew up

drinks and prizes. spring feels far away for those celebrating easter in the sierra nevada, but it's not stopping kids from their egg hunt. erin heft has more on the snowy holiday. >> springtime in the sierra shovels. working away. digging the city of truckee out of its white, icy shell, blanketed by crisp, fluffy sheets blooming out of winter. it can look a bit different in the mountains baseball fields under fresh fallen flakes, their backstops, domes of ice and yet happy for some springtime traditions go unscathed. >> happy easter rain shine or yeah, you guessed it, even snow. >> the easter bunny still makes it to town. but up here he comes with hot chocolate. >> we got hit with a dose of winter. >> we'll find all of these after the snow melts.

>> we hope. we're hoping for spring, but doesn't happen. and it's always snowing or raining on easter egg hunt day, so we get the real deal here >> eggs hidden for the little ones in town to find easter dresses traded in for tiny snow suits, and instead of painting eggs, decorating their little faces a tradition the weather can't bring down. not exactly your stereotypical picture of an easter egg hunt, but the memories made here are frozen in time, and the smiles on these snow babies are priceless >> a lot of fun. that was erin heft reporting. there is a winter storm warning in effect for the sierra right now. we'll take you to a live look here in lake tahoe from our camera at zephyr cove. you can see the snow really coming down. the snowpack is going to get more help from this latest storm.

statewide, it is 105% of normal for this time of year. and the snowpack is vital, of course, to the state's water supply. two wet winters in a row has helped erase years of drought conditions and a similar story. of course, here in the bay area, with all the rain we've been getting. but today we get a break so those egg hunts won't be all muddy today. lisa, how's it looking? >> yeah, you know, it is going to be a little on the wet side with the dew, you know, this morning. but yes, we're getting a break the afternoon though, could see some showers upper elevations because the atmosphere still pretty unstable. so the north bay, east bay hills, while the rest of us are mainly dry. a lot like yesterday, though. boy, those storms really came into play late in the afternoon. so not as intense as your saturday afternoon, but you can see that lightning strike well to the south of us, even though the area of low pressure is well to the south, we still have that unstable, cool air aloft and that will initiate perhaps some activity later on today. so

there's a closer look of soggy central and southern california. right now it is in the 40s, upper 40s. so certainly cool out there. will settle into those low to mid 50s in the next couple of hours. if you're headed out early. and as we look at our highlights then for today, a mix of sun and clouds, that slight chance of a shower comes into play. or a thunderstorm throughout the later afternoon. we are sunny and warmer. high pressure builds in monday and tuesday and then looking at rain returning as early as thursday into friday. much cooler conditions. here's our high resolution hour by hour forecast. you can see the fog and low clouds at the coast, the north bay holding on to some cloud cover, and then we break out into mostly sunny skies. but you'll notice after about 2:00, we'll begin to see some of those cumulus clouds bubble up, and the possibility from the east bay, the diablo range into the north bay, the south bay could see a few showers. in addition

to that, we will be breezy. here's a look at the afternoon winds anywhere from 15 to 25 miles an hour. so certainly on the cooler side. but we're going to fix that as we get into the early part of the week. temperatures warming up on your monday. this is tuesday likely the warmest day of the week with highs in the mid 70s inland. look at the low 70s bay shore and then some 60 at the coast. we'll get that sea breeze, but then things get really breezy and much cooler as we get into wednesday. notice the cool down. we're much cooler into the low 60s upper 50s coast. and then here we go into thursday where temperatures struggling to get out of the 50s. this is when we'll see that trough swing on through. could see some showers as early as thursday night into friday. and at this point we can't promise a dry weekend. so enjoy the next couple of days if you like it. warmer and sunnier highs today in the low 60s for you in oakland, 64 in fremont,

and electric, and clorox. they're all headquartered in downtown oakland. in january. blue shield and kaiser told employees to stay on site and not to leave for lunch because of concerns about crime. clorox and blue shield offered employees security escorts to their car, bart, or a location within two blocks. now, the company's ceo are joining forces to make downtown oakland safer for their employees. our first obligation to our employees is to ensure that they are safe. the ceo and president of blue shield explains the three basic components of the new $10 million plan we're using off-duty oakland police officers to increase the feet on the street. >> security in the downtown oakland area. >> secondly, there will be an ambassador program that allows people to get escorts to and from work. >> finally, there's a shared transportation system that we

are setting up with mini busses where people can move, for example, from public transportation or get a ride from public transportation. >> like many other cities, oakland is dealing with budget cuts and challenges with hiring more officers. mayor shengtao says she is so grateful for the deep collaboration with our four largest employers during this time of change and opportunity in oakland, and see this as an example of strong public private partnership. the new program will be rolled out in the coming weeks. oakland councilwoman carol fife says she's optimistic about this plan from the four big companies. >> i am encouraged that the four largest employers in the city of oakland are coming together for creative solutions to make our downtown and uptown areas safer. they're investing and they're putting their money where their mouth is. they're not pulling out of oakland. so i am deeply, deeply appreciative of this effort. >> we are ultimately committed to the safety of our employees and to being a part of the solution to help oakland address this kind of post-covid

now abc seven mornings live. >> good morning everybody. thank you for being with us on this holiday weekend. lisa is here with more on your easter sunday forecast. >> yeah, it's starting out on the cool side and we don't have any rain we could get into some showers later on this afternoon. still cool, unstable air aloft, but for the most part we will be dry. 43 in danville, 52 in san francisco, santa rosa, sonoma.

good morning. upper 40s, 48 in fairfield. and our 24 hour temperature change anywhere from 2 to 5 degrees cooler. so you might feel that heading out and let's go through the next few hours. so egg hunts and the easter bunny mid 40s in san ramon, 50 in oakland at 7:00. but as we get towards noon, we're still in the 50s. we've got fog at the coast, mostly sunny. here we are at 2:00, low to mid 60s, but then after 2:00 we could see a little activity in the upper elevavations of the east bay hills and the north bay, with a few isolated showers . so if you're hiking and biking, keep that in mind. otherwise, we're calling for a mainly dry easter. we'll talk about our warm up to begin the workweek in a few minutes. stephanie. >> lisa. thank you. new this morning, negotiations of a cease fire between hamas and israel are expected to resume today in cairo. this is according to the egyptian state run media. egypt and the united arab emirates are reportedly working together to bring both sides to the table. earlier this month, talks over

the release of hostages and a humanitarian pause were held in qatar. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu recently authorized a negotiation delegation to travel to egypt. back here at home, recovery work continues in baltimore after the dramatic bridge collapse. here is what it looks like right now. you can see the bridge there still in the water. crews brought in large cranes to pull out some of the wreckage to reopen the waterway for ships. abc news reporter chuck sivertsen has the newest message from the governor. >> the first sections of debris from the francis scott key bridge are now being removed. five days after that container ship lost power and collided with the bridge, sending concrete and metal plunging into the water. >> the north sections of the key bridge are going to be cut up and removed. this will eventually allow us to open up a temporary restricted channel that will help us to get more vessels in the water around the site of the collapse. >> the governor, acknowledging

appeared to be in good spirits. he was accompanied by his wife, queen camilla, and the appearance comes as the british royal family grapples with multiple illnesses and online speculation at the vatican. now pope francis presided over the easter mass. the 87 year old has canceled engagements over the past few weeks, though he has been recovering from a cold, bronchitis and the flu. although the pope pulled out of good friday service, he has been leading the holy week liturgies. at&t is notifying millions of its customers that their personal data has been found on the dark web. the company says the data included highly sensitive information like social security numbers, passcodes and addresses. the compromised data is from 2019 or earlier and does not appear to include financial information or call history. the discovery was made on a hacking forum nearly two weeks ago. still ahead on abc seven mornings, the giants walk back a controversial move.

still dark out. it's nice to see the lights looking down on the city. it is 537. now to the effort to reduce the city's homeless population and build a better bay area. san francisco's board of supervisors voted to expand a program that would help unhoused people leave for good by offering them bus tickets. abc seven news reporter lyanne melendez has this update. >> the concept of putting people on a bus to reunite with friends and family is not new. >> for less than a few hundred dollars, we give them a ticket. majority are from are from other

parts of california and again it's voluntary the program to help the unhoused find their way back home is and for decades has been called homeward bound. >> an abc seven news has been reporting on it since the early 2000. >> san francisco's department of human services has a program to encourage out of state transients to take a free trip home, but not many people want to go. >> san francisco supervisor and mayoral candidate asha safai proposed revising and rebrand the program after it moved from one city department to another, and its numbers went down. so you said there's nobody there hasn't been anybody to mind the program? >> absolutely. i mean, last year in hsa, only 12 people took advantage of homeward bound when in the past they were doing over a like 1800 to 1000 a year. >> the issue has now become a political hotbed. mark farrell, who is also running for mayor, posted, quote, mayor breed, let the program wither to a shell of its former self serving nearly

three times fewer people. but it's well known among nonprofits that the program was hit hard during covid. >> public transportation wasn't accessible. you know, we weren't able to put people on busses and get them to where they they wanted to go. >> also, during the pandemic, the homeless became more isolated and the use of fentanyl escalated dramatically. more people became highly addicted to a drug that, according to the centers for disease control and prevention, is 50 times more potent than heroin. what keeps you here in san francisco? >> i mean, i have habits that are, you know, easily more accessible out here. >> unfortunately, what is more accessible? >> uh- my substance use turin. >> ralea moved here from san luis obispo and admits his drug problem has kept him away from home. if you had the opportunity to go back home to a relative or parents, if you do have, would you take that opportunity or is
