about what happened and the serious damage done below. good evening. thanks for joining us. >> i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. the passengers on this united airlines flight 35 had a long flight ahead of them going to osaka, japan. but just as you saw in that video, within moments they had a sudden change of plans. >> yeah, we'll show you from the air. the plane took off from runway 28, right. or 28 are earlier today. >> and as it gained altitude, the tire fell off over the employee parking lot, hitting several cars before bouncing into the neighboring hertz rental car lot. the good news? >> thankfully, no one was hurt. but the tires on these boeing seven seven sevens can weigh up to 265 pounds. their huge tires they are. >> let's go out live to abc seven news reporter j.r. stone. he's been at sfo all night hearing more about this scene down below. j.r. >> well, ama, at first some of the passengers thought we were joking when we told them what we were covering here at sfo. then some of those passengers saying, first there was the door

incident on alaska airlines flight. then you had a wing incident, then now a tire incident, both on united airlines flights. there is concern among passengers tonight that this speed and the velocity that it was coming down, it would have crushed somebody like a grape. eyewitness gary glass is describing this. the tire from a united flight that fell off the plane after taking off at sfo, seen here in this video recorded by carly planes on youtube. glass was driving near the rental car facility and just 50ft away as you watch the tire hit nearby vehicles, i look up and it's a tire spinning at a rapid speed spinning, and it bounced in the staff parking lot and it bounced onto a car at a small white compact car and i thought that it was just going to crush that car and stay there. >> but it actually bounced again. really high tire still spinning. and then it landed on a red tesla and completely totaled and crushed the red tesla. >> multiple cars were damaged,

but no one hurt. >> i've never seen anything like that. i was in shock for about 15 20 minutes. >> the plane that was initially headed to japan rerouted to lax where it landed safely. no one there was hurt, but those in the bay, just a bit taken back after what happened. >> i knew it was a plane tire right away because they're huge right? they're like the size of an entire wheel, well of a car. but when it hit that tesla, like, i just remember the glass and the metal, the metal crunch and the shadow of the glass was just really loud. >> yeah, it's certainly good news that no one was hurt in this case. now, as to how that tire came off, that is under investigation by the faa. united airlines did say in a statement, quote, they will work with customers as well as the owners of the damaged vehicles in sfo to ensure their needs are addressed. live at sfo, jr stone abc seven news okay jr thank you. >> what a story. we're bringing

you live breaking news updates all afternoon as this story was developing a stay on top of the news where you live with the abc seven news bay area app. and be sure to turn on the push notifications so we can keep you up to date as we watch crews roll off with the wheel of the plane, we wondered how uncommon of a sight this is. >> abc news aviation analyst john nance says incidents like this are rare. he explained the situation on our 3:00 pm program getting answers, six tires on each side on the main struts of this 777, boeing seven, seven, seven. >> and there are times when mechanically something in the interface of the tire and the strut uh- interact and it either overheated or something was wrong and broke off. but again, it's a very unusual situation. >> nance says the loss of a single tire will not have any impact on the ability to land the plane. they are able to drop fuel to lighten the aircraft's balance. but, nance adds pilots will focus even harder to create a soft as soft of a landing as

possible. now, despite some very scary recent high profile incidents, the numbers still show. flying is by far the safest form of transportation. plane crashes remain extremely rare. mit research shows about 40% of airline passengers have experienced fear at one time or another while flying. however every year about 265 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash driving to the airport than in one mid-flight. the research shows a person is far more likely to die from poisoning on the job, or even by electrocution. >> let's move now to tonight's state of the union address and president biden's chance to appeal directly to voters going into the november election against donald trump. mr. biden taking on reproductive rights, immigration reform and israel's war against hamas. abc news reporter perry russom has that, and the republican response. >> mr. speaker, the president of the united states, president biden, on his biggest platform,

unveiling his plan to take on some of the biggest issues at home and abroad. >> the president calling for immigration reform as his border security bill stalls in the republican controlled house. >> this bill would save lives and also give me and any new president, new emergency authority temporarily shut down the border when the number of migrants at the border is overwhelming. >> sitting with the first lady, kate cox, she was denied an abortion in texas under the state's strict ban. >> if you, the american people, send me a congress that supports the right to choose, i promise you i will restore roe v wade as the law of the land again, biden announcing an emergency military mission to build a port in gaza, delivering food, water, medicine and shelter. the leadership of israel. i say this humanitarian assistance cannot be a secondary consideration or a bargaining chip. protecting and saving innocent lives has to be a priority, a senior administration official telling abc news. >> it will take weeks to plan and execute, and it will be

lawmakers to pass the bill that would send aid to ukraine, and the president with a direct message to vladimir putin, saying, we will not walk away. perry russom, abc news, washington. >> we talked with abc seven news insider phil matier afterward. he called this one of the most political state of the union addresses he has ever heard. >> the content was appeared to be something that you would hear, possibly from a candidate at a convention kicking off the campaign. and that's what i think we saw tonight. he these are the issues he wants to run on immigration reform by his package that the republicans haven't passed women's rights, which is going to be on the ballot on key states, pharmacy, big pharma, reducing things for the middle class, things for the working class. >> as far as what lies ahead for the president after tonight, phil says while he may have delivered with the speech, he has a lot of work to do. >> it is a tough road for incumbents right now, whether

you're mayor of san francisco or president of the united states, it is a tough time. people do not feel good about what's going on around them and how they're being hit economically. and you can say that you've created jobs and done all of those things. he is yet to connect, and he has to connect with democrats first and then move from there. and this was the first step in that, yes, he was powerful. at least his lungs were. he stayed on script next week. something else could happen. a speech is a speech only as good as it goes on. >> and we are less than eight months away from the general election. >> two more body blows to downtown san francisco tonight. the north face, which got its start in the city's north beach neighborhood in 1964, is closing its store in union square later this month. >> that's right. and just hours later, the chronicle reports zara is closing its union square store on post street as well. >> now, these announcements come just a week after macy's confirmed the closing of its flagship store in union square. since the start of 2023, more than three dozen downtown san

francisco retailers have closed or announced plans to close. san francisco mayor london breed held her state of the city address today on that news, she touted though a few of her election day wins from tuesday. one is over measure e, a proposition she put on the ballot. >> we will be installing new public safety cameras in high crime areas, deploying drones for auto theft, car break ins and other crimes. san francisco is not wearing the shackles of your negativity any longer. >> you can read much more about her policy plans for the city, including a new 30 by 30 initiative for downtown. that story is on our front page. abc7 news.com. >> in the east bay, there's a new group going around berkeley with the mission to protect cal students on campus. it's an idea from a group of students, parents and community members. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez has more on how they work and why they feel it's needed. >> parents are stepping in to make a saferer uc berkeley. cal

parents hired their own private security group called safe bears. >> oh, it feels good. and i appreciate it. >> helping people safe bears formed out of concerns that there weren't enough measures or resources to keep students safe. >> you know, sometimes cal students, it's easy for them to assume that the risks they face every day in berkeley are just part of normal life, but it's not. >> starting this week, six safety ambassadors wearing bright yellow jackets will patrol different areas, either on foot or by bike. from 630 in the evening to 3 a.m. every night. >> they all have california guard cards, which means they've undergone criminal background checks with the california department of justice as well as the fbi. they are not carrying any kind of defensive gear. they don't carry pepper spray or batons or handcuffs. >> the safety ambassadors don't step foot on university campus property, just on public roads and sidewalks around the university, where students live

and here in the us we have ten democrats and ten republicans to introduce a bill that would prohibit tiktok from operating in the united states. house lawmakers announced the bill, and today, the legislation easily made it out of the house energy and commerce committee unopposed, tiktok sent out pop up messages urging people to speak up to prevent a shutdown, and users responded by flooding congressional offices with phone calls. >> pressure campaigns on that tiktok put in place today, where they forced a pop up on the app and also told a lie that we were we were forcing an outright ban,

which this bill is not, proves the danger. they sort of prove the entire point. >> the bill calls for the chinese company bytedance limited to divest tiktok and other applications. it controls within 180 days of enactment of the bill, or those apps will be prohibited in the united states. >> on to the oscars and the countdown to hollywood's biggest night. the producers of this year's awards are revealing their plans to amp up the emotion during the acting categories. five notable former winners will be on stage as each winner is announced. >> yeah, now this was done before and now they're bringing it back. sandy kenyon with our abc news sister station, has more on the people who pick those winners in the first place. >> the movies we honor tonight have real power. >> the decisions about which movies to recognize depend on a powerful few. the members of the motion picture academy. and because this award is so prestigious, the members of this jury consider their choices very

show you the forecast. it is going to be award winning 688 degrees, mainly sunny and mild almond, and it is just going to be nice outside as people line up. and here's live view. equally gorgeous is the view from sutro tower. looking at the golden gate bridge, the skies are clear and tomorrow morning it's a cool start. at 7 a.m. temperatures will be in the 40s, bright and sunny at noontime, and we're going to warm it up for you compared to today in the low to upper 60s, with those temperatures dropping off at 7 p.m, you know, with the warmth this time of year comes the pollen count. some of us are suffering. if you are suffering, it may be due to the tree pollen which is running high. juniper, alder and poplar grasses are moderate. weeds and molds are low to nonexistent. high pressure brought us milder weather today. if you didn't notice it after that morning, fog that cleared away certainly will notice it tomorrow with that ridge in place. but that system will come in over the weekend and will bring us some wet weather right now on live doppler seven all is quiet. your

temperatures are in the 40s and the 50s as you check out the view from pier 39. it's a lovely one, as tomorrow. sunny and milder weather this weekend. cooler periods of rain mid to late next week. we are talking about spring like warmth with temperatures soaring into the 70s. not quite there yet. tomorrow morning still that winter chill, 30s and 40s under clear skies. you'll get good radiational cooling. but tomorrow afternoon get outside, enjoy the sun because it is going to be beautiful. south bay, 68, san jose and gilroy on the peninsula. you'll need the sunscreen. 65 san mateo, 60, and half moon bay, downtown san francisco 62 degrees. looking at the north bay, mid 60s from san rafael to santa rosa, 65 in napa and the east bay, also in oakland. 65 fremont head inland and this is really going to feel a little more like spring than winter. 65 in walnut creek, 67 in fairfield, 66 livermore. all right. just as you get used to that idea, saturday cools off, clouds up, and here comes a

narrow frontal band. so 8 a.m. it's in the north bay. that front still holds together. at 11 a.m. you're looking at wet weather, and then it starts to break apart. early in the afternoon. the showers and the inland east bay and the south bay won't amount to a whole lot, but just have your umbrellas handy for the first half of your saturday as we are expecting some rain. rainfall estimates for saturday, anywhere from a few hundredths of an inch in the south and inland east bay all the way to 2/10 of an inch in ukiah. now looking at your sunday, the next system comes in late afternoon evening. it is going to bring more snow to the sierra. certainly lingers into monday morning. and then here comes a second storm that one will bring us widespread rain on tuesday, with more sierra snow. and then look what happens. big ridge of high pressure builds in. and that's what's going to bring us the warmth as we head towards thursday. accuweather seven day forecast. we've got warmth tomorrow. it's going to feel nice. scattered showers, level one saturday. it's a one uh- afternoon evening. sunday is when we're expecting rain. don't
