news starts right now. a wet start to the weekend. >> we've seen rain, mudslides, trees toppling over, even a tornado and a fire. and that's just the beginning. it's a blizzard in the sierra creating dangerous conditions. >> tonight, the winds are ripping through the mountains and the snow is piling up. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. we're starting here in the weather center because it has been a very busy friday. yes. >> and we have seen just about everything today. we're not done yet. no >> absolutely not. this is a historic storm for the sierra nevada. and here in the bay area

tracking thunderstorms. dan and anna, let me show you live doppler seven. because those thunderstorms that started up this afternoon are far from done . as we take a look, as at live doppler seven, you will see exactly where we are tracking those strong thunderstorms right now. moving across parts of santa clara county, tracking this next cell heading towards morgan hill at 1123. it is accompanied by so winand hail as well. on the peninsula, we are seeing downpours in burlingame, california, drive across highway 101 into the east bay. walnut boulevard, walnut creek downpours as well. so really, here's the deal. as we look, rain has been heavy enough that an urban and small stream flood advisory issued from parts of san francisco county all the way down towards the santa clara county, as they are going to continue to see some minor flooding issues up around lake and mendocino counties in the hills. it is cold enough for snow. sfo winds gusting to 40 miles an hour right now, and the wind advisory remains up until 10 a.m. tomorrow. gusts to 55

miles an hour. it is dumping in the mountains. just look at this. blizzard conditions in the sierra nevada chain controls and road closures. as you can see, the snow is just piling up over 150 mile an hour wind gusts already reported over some of the ridge tops. a blizzard warning until 10 a.m. sunday. this is unprecedented 12ft or more over the highest peaks. extremely dangerous to impossible travel. i've never seen 12ft or more in a short amount of time. this is a level two storm with the cold, unstable air continuing to move in. we're going to keep the thunderstorms in the forecast along with the downpour hours, and look at what happens by morning. we have got snow showers showing up over some of our local peaks. another push of energy tomorrow evening i'll be back with a full look at the forecast for your weekend, which does include snow. dan. >> okay, sandy, thanks a lot. four people were injured when a tree fell onto a car in san francisco. the fire department says it happened at golden gate avenue at laguna street in the

western edition. all four people were taken to the hospital, but the extent of their injuries is not clear. multiple lanes were closed while crews cleared out that big tree in the south bay, a section of state route nine is closed because of a mudslide. >> debris on the road is diverting traffic away from the area between sanborn road and redwood gulch road. caltrans will work to clear the roads. it's unclear when it will will reopen because weather conditions could cause more debris to wash onto the highway. let's take a look at the current power outages in the bay area. this is from p-g-and-e's. there was one in rohnert park that the utility says was impacting more than 5000 customers, but it looks like crews have made progress in restoring electricity there. >> and this storm system triggered some really wild weather today in the central valley, a well-defined funnel cloud was spotted in madera county this afternoon, and it did come into contact with the ground, making it a tornado. we've not heard whether it caused any damage in mendocino county, a lightning strike sparked a fire that caused extensive damage to a post

office in leggett. a photo shows the aftermath with the glowing orange ball with a post office stood. it was closed at the time and no one was hurt. >> right now, a huge blizzard is slamming the tahoe area, creating near impossible travel conditions. 80 is closed in both directions near the nevada state line because of spinouts. chain controls are required if you're traveling on 50. the national weather service issued a blizzard warning, which remains in effect through sunday. >> now, the warning went out for people to avoid going up to the sierra because of these incredibly dangerous weather conditions. for those who are already up there, really all they can do at this point is hunker down and ride out the storm. abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke with a couple of people who are doing exactly that tonight. >> the wind comes up. it's about 30 knots. just about a whiteout. >> it's expected to be a record setting snowstorm, and people living in the sierra were busy friday evening trying to keep ahead of it all day long. >> we've heard the hum of snow blowers. it's just been going,

you know, one after another. if you drive around, people are just clearing snow. >> randi davis is a former abc seven news photographer who now lives in truckee. you can see his grandson's fitting in a snowball fight behind him while the storm's already threatened to take out the power, had a very close call earlier where we started to lose power and luckily didn't. >> it, it came back, just flashed and came back. we'll see how that goes, though. as the night progresses, the winds come up and the snow gets heavier, and as the snow piles up, the family's prepping pizza for the generator ready to go. we're probably getting about two three inches an hour. probably it's coming in. >> and as the storm comes in, the black bears are coming out. >> they're coming out already. they don't care what the weather's like. they don't care that they're going to be a snowstorm. >> and bryant is the executive director of the bear league, a nonprofit working to keep lake tahoe's black bears safe.

>> people think as long as there's snow, the bears are going to stay in the hibernation and every year they're just shocked when they'll leave a cooler out inside and, um, they'll leave some food in their car and they'll say, well, i thought the bears were sleeping. >> reporter as for anne, she's ready to hunker down for at least a few days. >> well, i've been hearing that this is going to be the storm of the century, and it hasn't disappointed. >> she's lived in the area for more than 40 years. and says so far, this storm is topping them all. >> it's been blowing thing white outs, accumulating and it's, uh, it's pretty ferocious. >> tara campbell, abc seven news remarkable video coming out of the sierra. >> here's donner summit earlier this evening, traffic was at just a complete standstill. fierce winds and heavy snow making it really hard to see. we talked with some drivers, some of them saying they're pushing on through the snow. anyway i towed up on that summit for 15 years. >> stay home. don't go. we're

going to go until we can't go no more. >> and then we'll cab up, turn the heater on. when it blows over, we'll keep on trucking. >> pretty hearty. the chp is simply telling drivers just stay away. >> but yosemite national park is completely closed to the public because of the blizzard warning. all current and upcoming guests have been notified that the reservations were canceled. for those staying in the park's hotel were checked out this morning while guests are gone, employees who live in the park have access to extra resources like generators and warming shelters. the park may reopen on sunday if conditions get better and get the latest forecast and track the rain and snow anytime with our live doppler seven radar, just search abc seven bay area in your device's app store to download it now. >> we'll go back to the weather in a moment, but let's move on for the time being. in the east bay, the oakland police commission has submitted all four of its police chief candidates to mayor shengtao. she will now determine if someone in that group will be selected and offered a job. here are all four candidates one. a

former police chief in san leandro and the others are from out of state. during a public forum last night, each candidate shared what their initial plans would be for the city if selected for the job. mayor tao has publicly opposed how open the chief selection process has been in the meantime, the governor has a strategy for cleaning up oakland streets. today his office released a ten point action plan to support the city in making oakland safer and more beautiful. the plan includes installation of more security cameras around the city, improvements in trash pickup and landscaping, and assistance from the state in addressing homelessness. governor newsom has previously increased deployment of chp officers in oakland to help combat crime. >> waymo got the green light today to operate its self-driving cars on the peninsula and highways. california public utilities commission is allowing for an expansion into more cities in the bay area, as well as los angeles. abc seven news reporter ryan curry spoke with some in san mateo county who think this expansion is happening too fast.

>> you've probably seen them all over san francisco, white cars with sensors on top, maneuvering the city with no driver. now you'll see them in plenty of other bay area cities, 22 cities in the peninsula. >> uh- they can actually use the service. uh. so it's really a surprise to everybody. >> the state public utilities commission approved waymo's request to expand to the peninsula and los angeles. san jose state professor of engineering ahmed bonafe says this marks a major milestone in the industry. >> the technology is here to stay. it's just who will do it better and communicate better at this stage. >> according to the cpuc, waymo can collect fares and drive people from san francisco all the way down to palo alto. and they can go on freeways, too. but they can't go more than 65mph. however some in san mateo county feel this decision was rushed. >> i'm concerned that the technology is not ready for prime time, county supervisor david canepa worries more

crashes involving self-driving cars will happen. >> waymo asked for this expansion in january. in the middle of february, the cpuc issued a six month suspension of waymo's request so it could review it more. but on friday, they decided to greenlight their request. >> they fast tracked it. how can you say that? there's a suspension or there's a delay, or there's a pause and then you get right back to business. >> cities in san mateo county had been working on an implementation plan for when self-driving cars hit the road. well, very soon those waymo cars are going to be on streets such as el camino real, which is why tech experts say it's about making sure the infrastructure is as up to date as possible. >> they have to communicate and understand this technology, understand the safety, understand how they can help with more about the safety, you know, exchange information with the with the with the technology company. it's collaborate and collaboration that's going to make it work. >> collaboration about something from the future rapidly becoming the present. ryan curry, abc

the driver. i mean, look at this was miraculously saved as her 18 wheeler truck dangled about 70ft over the ohio river. it happened after an accident on the bridge involving two other vehicles. a firefighter was lowered down onto the cab. as you see there, hooked the woman onto his harness, and then the two were slowly hoisted back up. oh goodness, the harrowing rescue took about 40 minutes to pull off safely, but thankfully it was a safe rescue. >> how lucky is that? thank goodness. wow, that's like a scene out of a movie, huh? while california's primary election is this tuesday and there is just one ballot measure, the entire state will decide proposition one. it's pitched as a solution for mental health and substance abuse, and potentially the homeless crisis. reporter rob mcmillan with our sister station in los angeles, has a closer look at prop one. >> we've seen the images. we know the stories. homelessness, mental health issues and

substance abuse struggles are some of the biggest problems in california right now. enter prop one, an ambitious but expensive potential answer. we're going all in. >> this is a scale and scope unlike anything we've seen anywhere in the united states. >> governor gavin newsom touring abc recovery center in indio this morning, a facility that helps those with mental health and substance abuse problems. the governor, using the time to push prop one, which would authorize the state to spend more than $6 billion. newsom saying the biggest issue the number of beds back in the 1960s when this facility opened, there were more than 30,000 beds across the state. today that number is only 5500. is it any wonder that we're struggling to address the magnitude of this issue? >> we simply don't have the beds. >> newsom said if prop one is approved, the plan would be to add an additional 11,000 beds. he says the bonds would be paid

for out of the general fund is not a tax increase. >> this is a redirection of an existing tax that was established decades ago. >> but there are many who don't support prop one, some saying that yes, there is a problem, but simply throwing $6 billion at it isn't going to work. >> we can all acknowledge homelessness is a serious rising issue in the state of california, but prop one is built on the fallacy that money is the solution to the problem, which we know now. it's not. >> republican assemblyman bill lee, urging californians to vote no on prop one. >> i don't think throwing another $6 billion at the problem is going to make it better until we change our actual policies and we force people into treatment and help. >> rob mcmillan, abc seven news. >> next week, certain cvs and walgreens will begin filling prescriptions for one of two medication abortion pills both pharmacies received certification to sell mifepristone. in states where it's legal, those states include new york, pennsylvania,

massachusetts and here in california, it will be made available to more states on a rolling basis. however the supreme court is expected to decide whether to restrict access to the pill by july. the cdc says you no longer have to self-isolate for five days if you test positive for covid. the new guidance released today says if you get covid, you just need to stay home until you've been fever free without meds for at least 24 hours as your symptoms improve. but they still recommend taking precautions for five days, like masking. the guidance is similar to what california public health officials had recommended earlier this year. >> overseas, for a moment, the funeral for russian opposition leader alexei navalny was held in moscow this morning. more than 1000 supporters gathered outside a church to remember one of president vladimir putin's toughest challengers, navalny unexpectedly died two weeks ago while serving time in a russian prison. people chanted and cheered navalny's name as his casket was brought inside the church for a private service, according to a human rights group. monitoring this whole

thing. more than 100 people across russia were detained for expressing defiance and calling navalny a true hero wife did not attend the service, as she is currently living outside of russia and faces the risk of being imprisoned if she returns. navalny was 47 years old. new at 11 reddit is firming up its plans to finally go public. the san francisco social media company is targeting a valuation of about six and a half dollars billion. that's far less than what it was worth three years ago. the wall street journal reports shares will be priced somewhere around 31 to $34. this is a highly anticipated ipo, and reddit is adding a few wrinkles, like allowing some of its users to buy shares. reddit will be listed on the new york stock exchange. >> jimmy kimmel is thinking ahead to his next big gig the oscars. this will be his fourth

live doppler seven right now. and you will notice that there is a cold upper level low that is sending all this cold unstable air in bringing the historic snow to the sierra. we've seen thunderstorms erupt here in the bay area and around the state right now on live doppler seven, you will notice a lightning strike near morgan hill, santa cruz mountains getting slammed right now. i'm going to y in closer to the morgan hill area. street level radar coming down pretty hard around uvas road. so this is something to watch out for. if you are going to be out and about hitting the roads. a 680 danville san ramon seeing some downpours. also seeing some steady rain from rohnert park to santa rosa right now, as we look to our north, the hills up around 1000ft in lake and mendocino counties, including cobb mountain, getting some snow. san francisco. so far over an inch of rain. 8000/400 in santa rosa, oakland, livermore, los gatos all about 4/10 of an inch. even if it was coming down 3000/800 of an inch. so far in

redwood city. speaking of coming down, it is piling up. blizzard conditions. this is a view from homewood tonight. the winds have been howling. if you do think about maybe wanting to go up there, don't do it this weekend. blizzard conditions continuing tomorrow. heavy snow, windy. it's too dangerous. brisk chance of snow monday and tuesday. the snow continues, but this will be your opportunity to get up there and enjoy the fresh powder as you look at the wider perspective here. snow across the northern california mountains, the sierra and certainly that wet weather continuing here in the bay area. a report of a tornado earlier today from our sister station kfsn, showing footage of the damage that was reported in madera county. tre were multiple reports initially as a funnel cloud. it was confirmed by the weather service. there was a tornado and they are going to be investigate doing so tomorrow. they should have a better idea as to what if it was an ef zero one, what level it was. all right. chain controls,

road closures in the sierra 190 mile an hour wind gusts has been reported tonight at palisades tahoe, just above 8000ft. that's pretty bad until 10 a.m. sunday. once again, blizzard warning 12ft or higher. it's extremely dangerous. i wouldn't go winter storm warning around lake and mendocino counties until 10 a.m. sunday, 5 to 10in above 1000ft. a few inches, even down to about 500ft. certainly as chilly enough 30s, 40s and 50s here locally not cold enough for the snow yet, but it will get there. winds are gusting to 53. oakland hills. as we take a look at the peak wind gusts. spring valley 64, sfo 53 las trampas in the east bay, 61 mile an hour wind gusts. they'll remain elevated, dropping off tomorrow morning and then breezy to gusty for tomorrow afternoon. here's a look at the headlines. overnight. wet. windy thunder. chance tomorrow. you're looking at a mix of showers and high elevation snow. and early next week our unsettled pattern will continue. so looking at the

storm impact scale overnight, it's a two downpours. at times gusts to 50. rough surf and that thunder chance remains with us. wave heights right now. 17 footers, high surf advisory until 4 p.m. tomorrow. up to 20 foot breakers. so watch out for that. the rain continues to come down. they will switch over to snow showers over mount hamilton . more snow up to the north and we'll continue to see this trend tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon and then tomorrow evening. here comes some more downpours at 6:00, so don't be surprised if you see another thunderstorm or two developing tomorrow. additional rainfall total anywhere from about a third of an inch in half moon bay to about over an inch and a half in ben lomond. your morning temperatures 30s 40s. there will be snow covered peaks here. locally it is winter. we are expecting this and tomorrow afternoon numbers will be in the 40s and 50s with that mix. wintry precip. accuweather seven day forecast. thunder chance continues level one tomorrow, sunday. you'll see more sun breaks. still some showers and
