-- attempted murder. >> it is a disturbing story. >> it has also been a challenging story the reason being there are long-standing laws in place protecting juveniles. the lack of information about child the suspects allegedly involved in violent crime is what is concerning community members and parents. they ask who is protecting us? i was shocked, scared, and devastated. he was mumbling he was stabbed and could not stop the bleeding. those words are from a family of a 15-year-old boy who was violently stabbed on a bus near the square of the afternoon the margin 13. talk on camera, they answer my questions via text. as we have an abc 7 news employee read. >> it was shocking and devastating to hear he was stabbed without provoking anyone. >> and the suspect is only 12 years old.

the photo is of a knife which i part of the police investigation. the suspect threw it in bushes. the 15-year-old nearly lost his life. >> i felt like i was having a heart attack. feeling helpless for not being able to be there. >> documents show the 12-year-old was apprehended later. and charged with the murder. on march 6, the boy was named with police documents in a suspect of another alleged dabbing during a robbery near japan town. documents also revealed this -- he was previously -- arrested with a robbery involving a firearm. >> i am worried every day i did not know what was going to happen. parents tell me as of the week after the bus stepping they had yet to be informed by the school. the boy was charge for attempted murder. clinics nobody told us anything i heard it for my child.

clicks the school don't say nothing. >> they don't give out that information that much. >> nobody told is anything i heard it from my child. >> >> they don't give out that information that much. >> they contacted the school about the alleged situation in these crimes. a person responded saying they could not talk pacifically about the case but the school has protocols in place to assure the updates to families to support the schools when an incident involves a particular school community. the information blackout is not from the school district it also extends to the juvenile justice system which is all about privacy. they would not confirm that the boy was in custody because of privacy. they could not confirm their involvement in the case citing

state laws that restrict information about juvenile cases to anyone other than relevant artese in the legal matter. i sat down w district attorney brooke jennings who also could not get the specifics about the 12-year-old case because -- 12-year-old case because of privacy. but i did ask about the crimes. >> with our youth it is different. we have to make a determination on somebody for them to remain out of the home. it is a different process. >> anthony brass has extensive experience with juvenile cases but he is not familiar with this stabbing incident. he says juvenile criminal justice system is challenging and it needs to work. >> we are popularizing crime and the cultural shift is to in the name of compassion remove accountability. that is a dangerous road to walk. they are experiencing and they are exposed to more mature

behaviors earlier. it really -- i fear for them because they do not have the emotional maturity to moderate themselves. >> when i asked dia about the frustrations shared by brass and the number of parents i spoke with she said there is a need for change. >> you are right what is going on is not enough. that is why we are in these situations. there is more we can do and i am optimistic that if we come together in a way that is more innovative we will get there and i think again there has to be a balance between having consequence, even in my home with my kids, there has to be a consequence, but understanding you have to exercise compassion to make sure that you help children mature properly and appropriately. >> is a 15-year-old's family continues to grapple with what happened they focus on recovery. >> he is taking it day by day but we are thankful he is recovering. >> they also asked for a change

to the juvenile justice system that is clearly broken. >> there must be better solutions from the ground up because this could be anyone's child or family member. >> i spent a good amount of time speaking to the 15-year-old stabbing victim's family they are also in a challenging position because they are trying to balance the issue of their own privacy for safety reasons while at the same time they really want to and understand the importance of telling their story. at one point they told me one story would not necessarily change the laws in san francisco or the state but they want to do what they can to help. it is a sticky situation for all parties involved. dan: let's move to another story you will only see on seven. a woman left battered and bruised after being run down on the sidewalk by someone on a scooter. the writer took off and has not been caught. we explained what the victim wants to see happen now. >> the collision happened

quickly. as we slowed the video down you see how the pedestrian is struck and dragged a few feet hitting a wooden barrier. jennifer conrad is the pedestrian hit by the scooter on february 18 as she is leaving this restaurant on king street across from the ballpark. >> i was coming from my restaurant to the car on the sidewalk and i saw a scooter coming fast so i had a second to run and i moved back. i felt with the i contact he did not care the look on his -- the eye contact he is not care his look was get out of my way. >> she said immediately following the collision he was confused and could not speak. when she asked him for his information she said he took off. >> he left people were like a don't leave. he bolted. he laughed and i said give me your information and he tried to -- he left and i said give me your information and more people try to get him to comment and

though he left. >> this is not the first time i've done a story on people on scooters not abiding by the rules. the state of california states that it is illegal to ride a scooter on the sidewalk. in fact the scooter rental companies have it printed on each scooter. no sidewalk writing. we found a few of them continue to break the law. police are still investigating the accident they say scooter writers are at fault in 55% of crashes. the majority involve a motor vehicle. only one in 10 collisions involve a pedestrian. she went to file a police report a few days after her accident she had bruises on her arms and feet and suffered a broken wrist. >> i did not take the scooter i love the scooter but do not be rude respect everybody. >> abc7news. >> now to the north bay a harrowing ordeal for a family.

a huge oak tree came crashing down trapping a woman at her son. let's go live to our reporter outside the house all day. >> hey, big cleanup operation happening on yolanda drive for sure. the family living inside of the house says they are lucky to be alive. as you can see, a tree fell into the house. it happened around 5:20 this morning evening it heavily damaged. it pretty much woke up the entire neighborhood and wrapped the family upstairs. -- trapped the family upstairs. >> it was a crack and then a loud boom. >> she will never forget the moment where this giant tree crashed into her home. >> the first thing i did was scream to my son who was trapped in his room. i was also trapped because the door got stuck. >> the family share these

pictures to show the incredible damage done to the home and luckily he was not hurt thankfully to quick thinking. >> i don't know how he lived the tree is on his bed. and he turned and jumped out of bed. >> mother and son were trapped on the second floor of the house. >> they threw ladders and got up and use chain and cut holes and got the people out. luckily everyone was safe and no one was injured. >> the oak nearly a century in their yard. >> part of it fell onto the neighbors property narrowly missing his house and car. >> when the trees get to be 100 years low -- fold they grow to be about a foot a year and stuff can happen. >> fire fighters a winter storms and record rainfall has brought down hundreds of trees in the area. >> with the wind and the power

ama: tonight we are hearing from people who witnessed a police chase who killed a mother of twins and injured those two children. we have a surveillance video it is graphic. you have a story. >> they don't care they never stopped chasing them. they need to stop chasing them and if the police had stopped chasing them then this would have never had happened. >> this woman who did not want to be identified is the cousin of the 31-year-old mother who was killed in the car crash. her twin six-year-old sons were severely injured. >> they need to stop chasing. when a car enters into a residential neighborhood they need to top facing the cars. >> the issue she is referring to happen thursday night. police was informed with -- of a stolen hurt -- suv headed toward hercules. they chased it after it exited i-80. the video shows the moment the suv hit this at the

intersection. >> it was the most horrifying thing i have seen in my life. it was terrible. >> tony was leaving his restaurant when he witnessed the crash. the scene unfolded in front of louis porter's house he was one of the first on scene. >> i heard a little boy yelling in the car so i ran straight to the car. there was no one even there yet. i just tried to hold the little boy. >> police say the two boys were taken to the hospital in oakland like the victims family. porter says this is not the first time he seen a police chase on parker avenue. >> wherever they can trace they want to run out this way. and it is dangerous. dangerous. >> their surveillance video shows the driver who police identify is 20-year-old ralph the third running from the scene. he was found at a nearby liquor store and arrested on several charges including vehicular manslaughter. the family and the hospital are not able to provide an update of

the two boys condition. hercules police are not available to comment on the police chase policy or residents concerned about the number of chases. >> the whole community is shook up. everybody is praying and hopefully the other child is safe. >> abc7news. >> alameda county district attorney pamela price is now commenting on a controversial case reported last night by i.t.. a day after price refused to answer questions, she said -- send -- said in an email that she is disappointed that they rejected a plea deal that she reached with a triple murder suspect alonzo homewood. price offered him a 15 year sentence for voluntary medical -- manslaughter instead of the 75 years to life he originally faced and an alleged murder for hire carjacking and robbery. the da statement also included praise for lockwood. saying we appreciate his effort to stop the violence.

the statement is not being received well by her own prosecutors who told our own reporter that she not show -- should not talk about a pending case particularly one that a jury is about to hear. they are working on a deep dive policies and the impact. she refuses to be interviewed for the report. >> there are hundreds of school district teachers staging a one-day strike. teachers rallied and walked picket lines. here at skyline high school included. they demanded 23% raise which would bring them close to the pay for teachers in california. the district is only offering three point 5% raise. they say classes went on as planned but the action cap students out of school -- action kept students out of school and access to instruction. dan: it makes you want to skip doesn't it? sunshine and no rain with the weather. >> i almost want to go to the beach but it is a little cool. >> a little cool for the beach

storms causing massive damage in the areas. abc 7 news reporter has the story. >> tall trees towering over el camino real are coming down with the help of a crew. on this friday, woodchips are frying -- flying on state route 82. the eucalyptus trees have been a major hazard. on march 14 several trees toppled over. stephanie infantino's home on edge drive was struck by a fallen tree and three nearby vehicles were crushed. >> this corner had three trees come down in addition to two other trees and a telephone pole. it caused devastation to people's homes, cars, and your misses for their lives. >> this is known as the city of trees. >> the city has i believe close to 17,000 trees citywide. at the eucalyptus tree has been around for over 100 years.
