presented the award for best picture. what a moment that was% in keys costar, ghhee yeoh made irst asian actress ever to win in the 95 year history of the oscars. for all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight. this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. this is proof. but dreams dream big and dreams do come true. and ladies , don't let anybody tell you you are ever past your prime. what moment and another moment here, ruth carter became the first black woman ever to win two oscars in any categories after she won for costume design, and that was incredible. this right here another historic first. not too not, too became the first song from an indian film to be nominated and eventually to win an oscar. it was also my favorite performance of the

eulture, the dance moves the costumes all amazing, just some of the highlights that we saw on stage, but backstage was an entirely different story, our friend and abc news entertainment reporter jason nathan said, was there at the dolby to take it all in. jason you were saying that what we fell in love with key speech on stage? he did even more impressive things backstage. tell us what you saw. it was really amazing when he came backstage, and he and michelle yeoh and brendan fraser everybody was great, but he hui quan, who has come through so much to come to this point is life a thing that he never thought would happen because after his initial success in hollywood, he just the phone was not ringing even when this film was made everything everywhere all at once came out a year ago. yesterday it premiered the south by southwest film festival told

us that he did not have health insurance in the first couple of years of the pandemic. that's how bad things were for him. it wasn't things were bad, you know, 20 years ago, 15 years ago, he was not working in the health insurance, and today he is an oscar winner, which is just it's amazing. he could not believe it. we could not believe it and everybody was rooting for him all season. incredible and then we justsaw there. jamie lee cheering for him from her seat. she was kind of a surprise of the night. i think a lot of us were maybe expecting a win from angela bassett. what was jamie lee like backstage? she was she was emotional. she was cursing up a storm. she was she was. she was not family friendly as she often is, but she was very, very appreciative as well . talking about her parents, you know, of course, she comes from hollywood royalty. during one of the questions she was asked about being a nipple baby, which he proudly wears. she has been in hollywood for a long time. but this has never happened for her. she's never gotten to this
12:35 am
level of success, and she thanked everybody who supported her all these years and other genre films. she has done all the horror films. she's done the comedies she's done to get to this point. she almost couldn't believe she was at this point in this point in her career as well. amazing hey, you look fantastic. by the way, jason. thank you for all your incredible work there. a busy night in hollywood back to you now. andrew and rhiannon busy night in love to hear jamie lee curtis was cursing all of us. alright but we don't we do here because we're going to have more from hollywood in this half hour right now, though we want to get to our other big story of the morning. it is the government's new emergency measures meant to stop a potential banking crisis. they followed the shutdown. click on valley bank and the takeover of another regional bank signature of new york. the fed announcing overnight the clients that both of those banks will have access to all of their funds. when the branches open later today, not just the $250,000 that is already ensured by the f d i c i think that

without this, there could have been some serious runs on other banks because there would have been a lot of confidence throughout the whole system. now, people who have you know more than $250,000 in bank accounts don't have to worry about that anymore. by the way, treasury secretary janet yellen says the new program is not a bailout because the funds come from a pool of money that is paid into by wall street, she says it is different than the taxpayer funded bank bailouts of 2008. president biden is expected to speak on the banking issue later this morning. the white house is about to green light, a major oil drilling project on federal land. the willow development will be approved today, however, it will be smaller than originally planned, using three federally owned sites in alaska instead of five. the news follows sunday's move by the biden administration to declare the arctic ocean off limits to us oil and gas leasing next to the dangerous flooding

that's happening in california, and more rain is on the way. thousands are already out of their homes as a new storm system closes in this morning. millions in california are bracing for a new round of storms as floodwaters inundate neighborhoods we arelooking at expanding evacuation orders. authorities in monterey county now expanding evacuation orders after the salinas river began to overflow flooding towns along its banks. this is a very important evacuation order because it encompasses a large amount of residential structures. dramatic video shows the rescued by helicopter of a man stranded after floodwaters washed away his car. hours earlier, a levee breach on the nearby baharu river forced residents to flee more than 3000 in monterey county have now been evacuated. first responders navigating the streets, searching for people stranded and submerged vehicles were up

hollywood's elite without ever being mean. hosting the oscars is an impossible task. but this was definitely jimmy's best. go at the gig. i think we were just saying he did a really good job, toeing the line and keeping things moving, which everybody needs during a night like this. i like what you said he is funny without being mean a little bit of a safe choice when you think of other comedians, but i think that's the right call. he did such a great job. some of the pics i had to win where austin butler, cate blanchett and angela bassett. they all lost and that is why we turn to will for our oscar. did jenny lee curtis surprised you? did you think angela bassett was going to get me jamie lee was the biggest surprise of the night. no doubt. yeah. well thank you. thanks, guys. much more from will and we'll go back. live to hollywood coming up in this half hour. don't go anywhere. okay our other big story this morning. the new emergency measures just put in place to avoid yet another bank collapse. stock futures were up overnight , signaling signaling confidence in the federal program, but are more banks about to fail. experts say no. this morning.
1:07 am
the government is deploying emergency measures to stop a potential banking crisis, including the takeover of another regional bank, signature bank of new york, just two days after regulators shut down silicon valley bank, the second largest bank failure in u. s history, i think that without this, there could have been some because there would have been a loss of confidence. throughout the whole system, the federal reserve last night announced clients at both banks will get access to all their funds. when branches open today, not just the $250,000 insured by the f d i, c. treasury secretary janet yellen insists this is not a bailout because the funds are coming from a pool of money paid into by wall street different than the taxpayer funded bailouts of 2008. this is not a bailout. this is. change of policy. yes, but to the f d i c s funding. does not come from taxpayers that comes from the

banks. the big banks. all the turmoil began last wednesday when silicon valley bank, a large lender in the tech industry, tried to sell assets to boost its balance sheet that panicked investors and customers race to withdraw their money. after seeing the news on social media, it's a confidence game and social media can destroy confidence very quickly. twitter was just a blaze with concerns about what was going on here, and that creates a wildfire situation. senator bernie sanders blames silicon valley bank's collect caps on successful republican efforts in recent years to relax regulations o small and medium sized banks. as for signature bank, the reason for its collapse remained unclear. overnight. many of signatures clients are in cryptocurrency. over the weekend. the uncertainty spread to another regional bank first republic because of its similar profile to silicon valley. many customers concerned trying to figure out if this is the best place to hold our money, but overnight, first republic said it secured funding from jpmorgan chase and the federal reserve. in the meantime, experts say,

the emergency program announced by the fed should be enough to calm financial markets and prevent a domino effect cases different. i don't think this is anything like 2008. i don't think we have to worry about that. we don't have contagion in the financial system itself. president biden says he's pleased the solution was reached to help silicon valley and signature banks. but he called the bank's problems a mess and promised to hold people responsible. parts of california are now trying to dry out after extensive flooding. look at this video. one of the hardest hit areas right now is monterey county that is south of san francisco. alevi there was breached and thousands of people were told to evacuate. since then, first responders and the national guard have been searching for those who might have been stranded and submerged vehicles. one man was hoisted into a helicopter after his car was washed away by a swollen river thee. more rain is expected in northern california today, and flood watches are posted for most of the state as
