until the storm has passed and the roads have cleared out. it can get slick. liz: now at 6:00, snow in california. where we will see the most rain and where road conditions will be the most dangerous for drivers. good morning, everybody. it is march 5. let's get straight to the weather center. >> this is a level and a pretty strong cold front. we have showers. live doppler 7 picking up all of that. we saw anywhere from a third of an inch to a half inch of rain. you can see the mix there scattered showers in the north bay. back through hayward, showers. heavier along highway 82. and as we look at the south bay, this is where the front is

moving through, morgan hill, gilroy. and all of that snow from mount hamilton. the wintry mix continues level 1 system of showers, breezy, thunderstorm at most levels. as we look at the wind with the reins, they have been breezy. not too bad. you can see the camera shaking though. we have showers in the forecast with that wintry mix. near 50 today. the shadow -- be scattered. we will talk about changes for the weekend in a few minutes. liz: new video shows gravel falling down and covering roads, cars, and trees. this is in grizzly point overnight. the roads look icy, as you can see. officials have been warning drivers to be extra careful on the roads as the storm moves

through the bay area. take a look at this, lightning strikes in san francisco as people drive through the rain. this was from highway 100 one in san francisco. more rain is expected today. flooding could get worse. be prepared if you are planning to drive. take a look at this in north bay. more snow from the level 1 storm this weekend. it came down again on highway 29 near calistoga. that's a lot of snow. it began around 10:00 yesterday morning and continued for a couple of hours. >> i have never really seen anything like it. i mean, i've heard snow like this happening up here before, but that is way up at the peak. i have never seen snow this low in elevation. liz: caltrans began clearing the highway once the snow started falling. highway 29 got hit hard during

-- last week during the storm and had to close for several days. in the sierra, the roads are also a mess right now because of the snow. interstate 80 is shut down again westbound at the state line and eastbound at colfax. the road conditions a really bad there. it has been an epic season for the mountains with even more snow to come. as abc 7 news anser hassan tells us, it may be great for skiers and snowboarders, but there are all kinds of hazards. anser: there has been so much snow coming down in the sierra nevada, caltrans is struggling to keep the roads clear. >> these past few torn -- storms have really been taking a toll on the roads. currently, the i-80 is still closed. anser: justin collins is a meteorologist at the national weather service in reno. he says the sierra nevada is expected to get pounded by snow. saturday was hit hard, but the heaviest snow is yet to come. mostly overnight. >> multiple feet for the sierra, 38 inches in the canyon, a foot and a half in truckee. anser: accumulated snowfall is

over 500 inches, compared to the median average of 360 inches over the past 30 years. more storms in march could keep the snowpack on pace to break the record set in the winter of 1982-1983. justin: at least in the central sierra, it is 196% of normal for this date unusual snow depth and snow amounts for the sierra this season. anser: temperatures appear to be colder than usual, which keep the snow from melting, often to the delight of skiers and snowboarders. but heavy snow created whiteout conditions, which has created icy roads and low visibility, already causing crashes and spinouts. collins says this weekend may not be a good time to travel.

>> i would say stay home and don't travel until you -- unless you have to. wait until the storm has passed and the roads get cleared out. because it can get slick. anser: another reason to stay home, the threat of avalanches, which has already been posted for parts of the sierra from now until monday. anser hassan, abc 7 news. liz: in southern california, people are being told not to head to big bear ski resorts, even though they are open. most roads are closed following recent snowfall. many residents are digging themselves out. the snow has made big bear lake hard to reach, and that is leaving many grocery store shelves empty, gas stations out of fuel. this has left residents wondering if they can even support tourists. >> we don't have supplies for locals, let alone the people who are coming up here for a vacation. liz: there is no clear timetable as to when roads and the highways in the san bernardino mountains will reopen for business. you can keep track of weather conditions as the storms move through the bay area and access

the same live doppler 7 our weather team uses. that is available on demand on the abc 7 bay area app. new this morning, a man was killed after a car hit him while he was riding his bike on the freeway in san jose. the crash happened last night on northbound 101 near east rakell -- brock out road around 9:00 p.m. as authorities arrived on the scene, they did close two lanes for couple of hours, but those lanes did reopen around 11:00 last night. in the east bay, a car is covered in bullet holes after a robbery and chase that started in pleasant hill yesterday. police say two suspects robbed a verizon store. officers found them in concord and said when they tried to get them to stop, the suspect had an officer with their car. that officer then opened fire, hitting the car, and it took off. while that was happening, the second suspect got away. officers eventually caught up with the car, ending the chase in bay point. oakland families of homicide victims and anti-violence groups are calling for a former police chief leronne armstrong be rehired. abc 7 news lena howland has more.

lena: two and a half weeks after oakland mayor sheng thao fired police chief leronne armstrong, saying -- mayor thao: i have decided to separate chief leronne armstrong from the city without cause. >> bring him back. bring him back. lena: violence intervention organizations, nonprofits, and families that have lost loved ones to violence on the streets of oakland are pushing back. >> reinstate chief armstrong. because he cares about this community, he cares about us, he truly cares about us and our pain. who else cares like he does? lena: this comes as oakland police say they are investigating a string of violence, after they say four people were killed in four separate shootings last weekend alone, three of which happened on friday the 24th. >> february the 24th is called bloody friday. we lost several of our loved ones, so many shootings over the weekend. >> we have to stop these killings, we need somebody that

is in there that knows what he's doing. lena: armstrong was originally put on federally paid administrative leave when a federal monitor questioned his conduct against one of his sergeants. now organizers are pushing to hold a town hall with mayor sheng thao about the fallout. >> we are asking the mayor to be accountable for the things that she said she was going to do. you're going to take care of the community? here we are. lena: chief leronne armstrong was not there for saturday's rally, but he did release a statement, saying i thank them for their support of me and my policies as chief to get victims reduced violence and improve public safety in oakland. while the search for a new police chief is underway, armstrong's legal team already filed an official appeal to dispute this firing last week. in oakland, lena howland, abc 7 news. liz: in the south bay, officers are still going back and forth to the home of a san jose man who was accused of blowing up at least two pg&e transformers.

inside the home, investigators say they found explosive materials and an inactive drug lab used to make methamphetamine. 36-year-old peter karasev is in jail and faces nine different charges. he made his first court appearance on friday. officers that he will be at his home for a few more days as the investigation continues. students at montgomery high school in santa rosa are planning a walk out tomorrow. this comes as we learn police will be at the school when students returned following a deadly stabbing. the police chief issued a statement, saying he picked three police officers to welcome back students and staff to the school. last week, 16-year-old jaden pienta was killed in a stabbing at the school. officers arrested two students. chief john cregan will also say he will attend an upcoming -- also says he will attend an upcoming listening session scheduled for tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at the freeman event center in santa rosa. abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area, and a part of that is discussing the issues of reparations for

african americans in california. the california department of justice held a second public hearing in sacramento yesterday. this is an effort to study and develop reparation proposals for a bill enacted back in september 2020. people from across the state shared public comments on the historic treatment of african americans in the u.s. comments included generational impacts from slavery, equity, and other civil-rights issues. one bay area woman presented some ideas. >> california is supposed to be a sanctuary state and has never been one for us. we should be receiving land, cash, economic equality, resources, we need agency, we need restoration of hope in our communities. liz: the reparations task force said they will hold periodic public meetings. happening today, present biden will mark the 50th anniversary of bloody sunday in selma. protesters were marching across the edmund pettus bridge when they were attacked.

liz: welcome back. here is a live look from our east bay camera. former president trump the conservative political action conference, known as cpac, last night. a straw poll came out showing him as the clear choice for president. he received nearly 62% compared to the neck closest competitor, florida governor ron desantis. desantis got 20%.

cpac's top pick for vice president is kari lake, who ran for arizona governor. desantis also finished second in that straw poll. senator bernie sanders is promoting his new book, and he did so in the bay area. last night, people felt the bur as sanders stopped by the visitor center in san jose. visitors from as far away as fresno joined the presidential candidate for a book discussion for his "new york times" best seller, entitled "it's ok to be angry about capitalism." sanders explained the thought process that went into the publication. sen. sanders: we wanted an honest assessment of the reality of american life for tens of millions of people whose pain is very rarely discussed. liz: a literary foundation hosted the event, and each attendee received a free copy of the book. today the dazzling display of

, lights that have been on the bay bridge for the past decade or so is coming to an end. the insulation goes dark tonight unless $11 million can be raised to replace many of the burnt out bulbs. abc 7 news reporter suzanne phan tells us about the massive fundraising campaign underway. suzanne: the bay bridge lights make the perfect backdrop for so many photographs. >> it is stunning. we really love it. >> the light installation has dazzled visitors and locals alike. >> it is a good representation of the beauty of the city. suzanne: but on sunday night, the lights will shut off. that is hard for many people to believe. >> i don't think we should lose these lights. it is too pretty. >> the bay bridge is a harsh environment for electronics. this is failing fast and needs to come down. suzanne: the plan is to take the lights down and replace them with better lights. davis says it will cost $11 million to bring the lights back for the next decade. the goal is to get 10

individuals to give $1 million each. >> we have a gentleman with the comb foundation, and they have given $1 million. suzanne: the last $1 million in donations will come from a crowdfunding campaign just launched at thebaylights360.org. so far, nearly $6 million have been raised. >> we need a few thunderbolts of love right now. if we get that, this project can come back. suzanne: ben davis says the new insulation will have leds, and -- twice as many leds, and that means the lights will be seen by people all across the bay. >> we are going to wrap the cables so that you can see it not only the city side, but around the bay carefully and , safely to drivers as they go across the bridge. suzanne: at the waterfront, patrons come for the oysters as well as the great view of the bay bridge lights. >> it is dazzling. it brings the city's lights -- brings the city to life across the bay. suzanne: the lights are switching off, but they will be

back once enough money is raised. >> we just have to tell the people to have hope, because that is what the bay lights are all about. it is about hope, and i think in this day right now, san francisco can use it. suzanne: in san francisco, suzanne phan, abc 7 news. liz: hopefully those can stay on and we will get them back soon. in the east bay, a celebration for the holy festival of colors kicked off in fremont. the event biggest festival in hinduism. abc 7 news was there to capture it all, and the rain did not stop the celebration. >> we try to make as much fun as possible, and even though the weather was not great during the first half of the day, i think the sunshine is making up for the festival. festival that celebrates love, fertility, and life, and the triumph of good over evil.

all right, lisa, let's get a check of the forecast. a break in the rain, but more on the way. lisa: there are scattered showers across the north bay. a cold front came through about 1:00 this morning. now it is pushing through the central coast bringing thunderstorms, hail, and lightning. over 100 lightning strikes overnight. we are looking at an active pattern through much of california not only today but for the next several days. we are sort of stuck in this unstable atmosphere with showers for the next several days. you can see all of the showers behind this system. this is well into the south bay. as we go in closer, you will notice that moderate and higher elevations are getting some sleet and snow all the way down through scotts valley and the santa cruz mountains.

more rainfall as the showers continue to the south. because of this cold air in place, we have the winter weather advisory for hamilton at 30 degrees. snow, anywhere from 2-10 inches up toward mount hamilton will accumulate with that. once again, not warming up very much in the highlighted areas. we are looking at levels lingering at about 25 hundred feet. in north bay, we can see a thunderstorm there today. here is a look at the six-hour rainfall totals overnight. we so basically a third to a half inch, and not done yet in the santa cruz mountains. we picked up some pretty good rain as we talked about yesterday. rain in the mid morning hours and then again overnight. breezy, cloudy, wet san francisco. temperatures in the mid 40's. certainly, it is slick out

there. there may be some airport delays, but overall, temperatures are pretty much a degree or two of from yesterday. showers, wintry weather today, the unsettled pattern continues through tomorrow and tuesday. perhaps supportive of a -- perhaps a bit of a break wednesday. the winter storm warning winding down through early tomorrow. here is a look today where the showers continue with a partly cloudy sky and slight chance of a thunderstorm below snow levels. sunday night, you can see the bayshore, davenport, some showers, and then more rain through early monday. it's not a lot, but it's enough that you may need your wipers. it will be damped out there and cold. upper elevations snow monday night. and moderate rain keeping us going through your tuesday. we are still cool and still have showers lined up on shore.

taking u afternoon, picking up another 10th to 2/10, maybe half an inch in spot. through the next weekend, the temperature slowly go up, but that could be because of an atmospheric river. you weren't supposed to see that yet. not confident we are going to see a whole lot of rain, but confident we are not going to get out of this pattern anytime soon. in the accuweather 7-day forecast, may be a midweek break, but it is going to be cold in the morning and at the end of the week. resolution forecast models come in before we can really believe it. it's five days out. well, we will settle in for rain. that is what we have

liz: a new study on the mental health of young adults suggests recent college graduates are not emotionally ready for the workforce. abc 7 news amanda del castillo tells us why and what it might mean for our future working world. amanda: and pandemic divisiveness, and more, all impacting the professional lives of young adults who graduated in the last few years. >> because we have this mental health overlay now, anxiety, depression, suicidality, and substance abuse, it seems to be a lot harder, and the world is a harder place to enter into. so it is no surprise that people are going to struggle with this. amanda santa clara university : psychology professor dr.

recent survey that sampled around 1000 adults between 22 and 28 with at least a bachelors degree, uncovering most are emotionally unprepared to survive in the 9:00 to 5:00 workplace. among the key findings, more than half admitted to seeking help for emotional problems, including anxiety or depression noted experiencing burnout at least once a week. the survey also found 39% blamed their colleges for not teaching them workplace skills or emotional and behavioral standards. >> i don't think you can blame colleges for this, because students come to us already burnt out, stressed from high school and everything else. amanda: navigating coming during the covid-19 pandemic also kept many in their own homes, unable to hone in on real-world experiences. >> they are getting to the real world, the office environment where there's a lot of tension , with coworkers, an opportunity to get fired or get a demotion, and they are not ready for it. amanda: says the ceo of

the ice is hitting the window pretty hard, covering the road, and making it a really slick drive out there. good morning, everyone. thanks again for joining us. lisa, you are tracking all of this. that is grovel, right? we keep saying it is snowing, but it is graupel. lisa: there is snow saint helena as we look at live doppler 7. what an active scene. it continues as a strong line of storms moves through with thunderstorms overnight. and behind that front, look at all the showers from the north bay. on top of this, we are looking at cold weather staying with us. the winds have dialed back. that was a strong line of activity over the past six hours. right now 583 pleasanton, some showers. -- 580 showers. snow in the santa cruz mountains

and anywhere above 2000 feet, you can see that wintry mix. showers and breezy conditions, a slight chance of a thunderstorm and winds anywhere from 15-20 miles per hour. here is the plan throughout the day. cold temperatures, scattered showers, low snow levels, a level 1 system, the possibility of a thunderstorm remains well to the north, but we are still in this wet, unsettled pattern. we will talk about a similar scenario for your monday. liz: lisa, thank you. check this out, more graupel piling up on the cars last night. this is video from san francisco. we are waking up to a cold and wet sunday. people traveling back from lake tahoe are having a lot of trouble getting out of the area because of numerous closures and -- the fact -- that backed up traffic. the national weather service issued a winter storm warning for the greater lake tahoe area in effect until 4:00 a.m.

tomorrow. the weather service expects 10 inches to 14 inches of snow, with heavy winds blowing up to 95 miles an hour. right now, drivers are trying to beat the worst of the storm and get out of the area. >> get back into the traffic, you know, you have to head home. >> i considered not even coming at all, but, yeah, i definitely wanted to get on the road. liz: people who live in the sierra are bracing for more snow. some say they are avoiding leaving their homes for fear of getting stuck. deadly storms continue across the country, wreaking havoc for those caught in the impact. at least 12 people have died in states from severe weather that brought golf ball sized hail and tornadoes to the south. back here at home, people are preparing for more snow. abc 7 news reporter chuck sivertsen has details. chuck: people in 37 states feeling the effects of a fierce winter storm that brought heavy rain, damaging wind, and tornadoes. at least five people killed in kentucky alone. take a look at this video could

-- video. you can see the moment a wind -- the wind brings down a castle sign in bowling green, bending it in half and before it crashes onto a car. the governor saying there were hurricane force wind gusts, and you could feel the walls moving in. >> the biggest damage appears to be trees and power lines and the poles on powerline spirit when -- power lines. when it comes to power, this is going to be a multi-day event. chuck: more than one million people do not have power across the country. for some people in michigan, they only recently got their electricity back only to lose it again. >> we do not have a generator, and i just got a full fridge of groceries and a freezer of groceries because we were out for days, and now we have to throw away all of that food. chuck: more snow to southern california. people are stranded in the san bernardino mountains. abc's demarco morgan is there. demarco: people trying to dig their way out, with the help of neighbors and strangers pitching in to help.

chuck: sarah and jason brooks say they walked an hour and 20 minutes from their home to get food. >> the snow is so high on the banks that i can touch the power lines. chuck: in big bear, many of the roads are clear, but the roads to get up there are still blocked, essentially cutting the community off. >> it feels like it is the end of the world or something. chuck: store shelves are starting to empty, and some gas stations are closed. >> we are stuck up here the last two days, three days. chuck: the national guard helping to clear snow and rescue families trapped. chuck sivertsen, abc 7 news, new york. liz: a close call for a fedex driver in kentucky. moments after he dropped off a package, that huge tree came toppling down. it just missed him, and it landed on the home's porch. the driver, thankfully, was not hurt. a severe storm had rolled through the area earlier in the day. federal agents are investigating the death of a passenger on a plane after expenses severe

-- it experienced severe turbulence. according to the faa the plane took off from virginia to new -- from new hampshire to virginia on friday. after severe turbulence the , plane made an emergency medical landing in connecticut . there were five people on board including three passengers. the national transportation safety board is examining flight data and voice recordings to learn more about what happened. another train has derailed in springfield, ohio, just one month after the last train derailment spilled tons of waste in east palestine. around 20 cars derailed yesterday in clark county. right now, no reports of injuries or toxic spillage, but two of the tankers contain diesel exhaust fluid. coming up on "this week," ohio senator sherrod brown sits down with george stephanopoulos to discuss his bipartisan safety rail -- rail safety legislation. you can watch the full interview on "this week," at 8:00 right

here on abc 7. back here in the bay area, a fire station that have been closed for 12 years is back open this morning. the city and contra costa fire district held a celebration and open house at fire station 74 on pinole valley road. the station closed in 2011 because of budget cuts. it reopened with the help of funding from measure x that extended a county tax on utilities. still ahead on abc 7 mornings, preventing deaths on the roads. how the city of san jose is trying to take action after its deadliest year on the streets since 2022. -- in 2022. here is a live look outside this morning from our east bay camera. windy, foggy, and some rain drops. we will check in with lisa on when more rain is coming back later today.

here is a live look from our san mateo bridge camera. it does appear to be raining, making slick roads. take it slow if you are driving this morning. in the south bay, san jose city leaders are taking action to improve street safety after the deadliest year on city streets ever. the city council has approved a project along tully road, one of the most dangerous streets in the san jose area. abc 7 news reporter dustin dorsey shows us what the project will look like. dustin: safety is a basic necessity that everyone expects, but in the last few years in san jose, safety is not a given for residents driving, riding, biking, and especially walking the city streets. >> it can be dangerous, you know what i mean? you watch out for them as you want them to watch out for us. dustin: sadly, that does not always happen. more pedestrians died last year than any other year in san jose, and the overall traffic deaths

set an all-time high as well. leaders have had enough. >> it must be a priority. we cannot have 63 people die on our streets and not care. we need to care very much and make sure we reduce those numbers dramatically. dustin: the places that need special focus and care are the priority safety corridors in the city. >> 17 streets account for over half of our fatal injuries. tully is one of those streets. in the years between 2017 and their lives just along this one stretch of street. dustin: tully road safety improvement project is part of the solution. it will allow safer crosswalks and bike lanes, median islands, to allow for pedestrians to cross at their own pace ways to , narrow the streets, and even a brand-new traffic light at tully and brahms avenue. >> it will not only make a more pleasant place to become it will

annual tulip festival yesterday. this event celebrated international women's day. to honor that, san francisco's mayor was gifted with a bouquet named after her. community members also picked out their flowers and were able to create their own bouquet of tulips free of charge. there were 80,000 colorful tulips to choose from. and hundreds participated in the annual polar plunge in san francisco. this year included a 5k and 10k race. there were 400 participants who either ran, were part of it, or even jumped into the ocean. it raised money for the special olympics of california. money will go toward supporting children and adults with intellectual disabilities. always such an amazing event and i am always in awe of that. lisa: i thought i saw you there. liz: sure. i will be there to support, but getting into the water is where i draw the line. lisa: definitely.
