control. biden calling gun violence in the u.s. an international embarrassment. this morning, another mass shooting in america. police say an employee at this cabinet company in bryant, texas, shot and killed at least one person, wounding five others. >> he didn't say nothing. i asked already my co-worker. he said, he didn't say nothing. he just take it out and start doing it. he didn't say any word. >> reporter: the 27-year-old suspect also wounding a state trooper before being arrested. investigators have not released a motive. less than 24 hours earlier, a shooting rampage in south carolina ended with five people dead including a prominent local doctor, his wife and two grandchildren. a man working at the property also found dead. investigators identifying the gunman as former nfl player philip adams. they say he later died by suicide. >> intercepted by philip adams. >> reporter: adams spent five

injury-riddled seasons in the league suffering at least two concussions within a three-game period in 2012. reports say he may have at one time been a patient of the doctor. >> he's a good kid. he was a good kid, and i think the football messed him up. >> reporter: meanwhile in washington, president biden unveiling new measures thursday aimed at reducing gun violence. >> gun violence in this country is an epidemic, and it's an international embarrassment. >> reporter: the president using executive action to tighten regulations on so-called ghost guns, which are kits that allow people to legally build guns at home that can't be traced. biden also placing restrictions on stabilizing braces, which effectively turn pistols into short barrel rifles and encouraging states to enact red flag laws which allow authorities to remove firearms from people who are deemed a threat. >> enough prayers, time for some action. >> reporter: republicans calling the president's actions ill-conceived and misguided. texas governor greg abbott tweeting thursday just hours before the mass shooting in his

state saying, the president is, quote, threatening our second amendment rights. he just announced a new liberal power grab to take away our guns. we will not allow this in texas. after the shooting in bryant, texas, the governor saying, he promises, quote, any help needed to prosecute the suspect and said he's praying for the victims. and president biden is calling for the senate to pass more substantial gun control, but that's unlikely any time soon. there are several new developments in the sex scandal surrounding florida congressman matt gaetz. a close associate of gaetz is now expected to cut a plea deal. joel greenberg faces sex trafficking charges, and he could potentially serve as a witness against gaetz, who is under investigation for allegedly paying for sex and sleeping with a 17-year-old. and now "the daily beast" reports financial transactions show gaetz sent $900 to greenberg, and the next day greenberg reportedly sent that same amount of money to three young women.

now, abc news has not verified "the daily beast" report and there's no evidence as to what the money was for. but greenberg's lawyer claims gaetz should be worried. >> i'm sure matt gaetz is not feeling very comfortable today. but you've seen the number of stories and the emphasis in the last few days is on the matt gaetz/joel greenberg relationship, right? so i mean, wouldn't it be obvious to assume that he would be concerned? >> reporter: congressman adam kinzinger has now become the first republican in congress to call for gaetz to esign. we turn now to the pandemic and a new study finding which vaccine has the most side effects.

dating back 3,000 years including well preserved homes, tools and jewelry. we turn now to the urgent situation in the caribbean. thousands are now under evacuation orders with a volcano on the verge of erupting. here's abc's andrea fujii. >> reporter: this morning, cruise ships racing to help evacuate thousands of people before a volcano erupts on the caribbean island of st. vincent. >> look at that. >> reporter: officials saying an eruption is imminent. >> there is now in the country an evacuation order. >> reporter: ferries, boats all helping get people out. at least four cruise ships are now arriving. royal caribbean and celebrity sending help, and two ships from carnival are set to dock today. >> this is not a drill. this is an emergency. persons with children, those that are disabled, we're allowing you to board first. >> reporter: smoke is already billowing from the la soufriere volcano which last erupted in

1979. the prime minister ordering mandatory evacuations of about 16,000 people in designated red danger zones. st. vincent is the main island in the caribbean nation of st. vincent and the grenadines, about 1,500 miles from miami west of barbados and northeast of aruba and venezuela. >> all arrangements have now kick-started and the process begins. >> reporter: the pandemic is posing an extra challenge. >> keep your masks on. >> reporter: the prime minister warning people they should be vaccinated before entering a shelter or boarding a cruise ship. evacuated residents are expected to be taken to neighboring islands, or they can shelter on st. vincent outside the danger zones. faith, trevor. >> andrea, thank you. the state of florida is suing the biden administration demanding cruise ships be allowed to sail from the u.s. once again. cruises have been banned from american ports because of the pandemic.

welcome back. more americans are being 00 overwhelmed with spam phone calls or robocalls and lately call owners are being targeted. here's abc's erielle reshef. >> reporter: this morning, relentless robocalls. >> we recently noticed your car's extended warranty was going to expire. >> reporter: those unwanted calls the number one complaint to the fcc, an average of 200,000 annually, and right now the most popular category of robocalls, auto warranties. a lot of these seem to be focusing on auto warranties. why is that? >> there's public information out there about your cars that you own and people are driving more than ever as we come out of this pandemic. >> reporter: and the fcc is taking action making changes so operators can block robocalls. >> we're going to put in place new technologies that help authenticate our calls, and those new technologies will be in place in just a few months. >> reporter: but the fcc says there are some things you can do

now to stop most of the unwanted calls like downloading a call blocker. youmail is a free third party app that helps prevent spam calls. >> this says the volumes of the highest car warranty scam calls. >> reporter: using charts like this one youmail tracks the amount of robocalls happening at any given time but also the many fraudulent services being offered, which they say make up nearly half of all robocalls. erielle reshef, abc news, new york. o.j. simpson has settled a lawsuit he filed against a las vegas hotel. the suit claims simpson's reputation was damaged by hotel staff who claimed he was drunk and disruptive during a visit in 2017. simpson had just been released from prison. the terms of the settlement were not disclosed. and a surprise for customs agents at jfk airport in new york. a passenger coming from ghana had 22 giant african snails inside his luggage. the snails carry a parasite which causes meningitis in humans.

start stopping with nicorette checking the top stories, police have identified the man they say opened fire at a cabinet company in bryan, texas, killing one person and shooting six others, including a state trooper. they say the gunman is a 27-year-old who worked at the company. there is no word on a motive. the white house is expressing concern about tensions between russia and ukraine, especially moscow's military buildup along the border. ukraine's president visited the area thursday and accused russia of flexing its military muscles. police in northern ireland unleashed water cannons on protesters during street riots in belfast. protesters say they're frustrated over brexit trade restrictions and covid regulations. dozens of police officers have been injured. and they're counting the votes in alabama where amazon warehouse workers were deciding whether to unionize. early vote totals indicate most workers are rejecting the union.
