that. a woman was booked for possession of stolen property. part of the booking process includes a full body scan. when the woman saw the machine she sat on the floor and said she felt faint. the deputy suspected why she was trying to avoid the scanner. she admitted to possessing meth. the medical staff was able to remove a plastic bag containing 27 grams. authorities say that had the bag burst the amount of meth would have killed her. santa clara county is taking a different approach to placing children in the foster care system. abc 7 news was in san jose where officials announced a new program with the goal of placing more children with relatives instead of strangers. it's based after a program in los angeles where 84% of children are placed with relatives and they have better outcomes. a woman who was previously placed with her grandparents applauds the effort. >> whatever i need they're always there for me without a doubt. i'm very, very grateful for my grandparents for everything

>> reporter: hi, reggie. this is just a test. you will see these signs as you head from marin across the bridge over toward richmond. they're going to start testing these signs this morning. you'll start seeing them at 10:00 this morning. the green arrow means the right-hand shoulder is open to traffic. the red x means it is closed. they're opening the shoulder it try to ease congestion but it isn't opening until april, and it won't be open all the time. >> the lane is designed for use during peak periods only. we expect typically that will be from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. every day including saturdays and sundays. but we have flexibility thanks to the camera system, the communication wiring along the corridor to adjust those hours to respond to real-time demand. >> reporter: they want to keep that shoulder open when they can, so it's available for emergencies. officials will be testing all

configurations of these lights for the next few weeks, so get ready for that. they don't expect the lane to open to traffic until april. reporting live in san rafael, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. a suspected wrongway driver has been arrested after causing a major pileup in vallejo on westbound i-80 near magazine street. the chp says as many as four cars may have been involved in the crash. all lanes were closed for about 40 minutes while officers investigate. it's unclear how many people were injured. a dramatic end to a car chase in the east bay. richmond police posted the photos of a car that crashed in a home. two suspects are in custody. police say an officer in the iron triangle neighborhood trying to stop a dodge challenger which was reported stolen in a carjacking. the driver refused to follow orders, stepped on the gas, and that led police on a chase. the suspects eventually crashed in that house and then tried to make a run for it with the help

of witnesses and a k-9 unit, both were arrested. no one was hurt. east bay residents thrilled to watch hail come down for as long as it did. >> the hail came down for several minutes from oakland to hayward yesterday afternoon. look at the little girl in her unicorn headband. >> she was eating it. >> why not? as long as it's clean. five-second rule. there was enough left on the ground for people to pick it up and take a look. >> that he thought it was amazing. it's raining ice. it's raining ice, yeah. and then they thought it was going to be snow. >> all of a sudden it just started dropping from the sky, and i think we were thinking that maybe it was going to almost start to snow for a minute there because it seemed really cold. >> it was so cold that it did seem more like snow than hail. the wintry mix of surprises gave residents a day to remember. the wild scene in north concord yesterday. sheets of rain turning to hail before hitting the ground near

francisco will consider designating an italian american heritage day. some have been petitions for their own holiday ever since the city replaced columbus day with indigenous people's day. the board of supervisors will introduce new legislation to celebrate both indigenous people's day and italian american heritage day on the second monday in october. happening today sonoma county supervisors will get public input on the next steps in the fire recovery effort. they will be discussing a report from the state that is critical of the county's emergency response system. the report says the county wasn't up to the task of warning neighbors of the oncoming danger. it found procedures for using alert systems. the report says the emergency response system could have sent an amber-style alert but it didn't. 24 people died and more than 5,100 homes destroyed by the october wildfires. let's talk temperatures.
