kingdom, bitcoin source of his riches. >> are you a millionaire? >> many times over. >> bitcoin. >> bitcoin. >> the digital currency you probably heard something about at this point. the stories about early investors striking it rich, hitting gold. remember the guys from the social network, the twins. >> this idea wereorth millions. >> they put $11 million in bit coin in 2013. now they're billionaires. ♪ rapper 50 cent who declared bankruptcy got his money after accepting bitcoin as payment for his 2014 album. current value today over $6 million. but what exactly is it? >> made up currency. >> have no idea. >> we have trouble with money in the world as the it is. >> reporter: bitcoin the world's most popular crypto currency, digital currency you could use like cash.

up like other currencies it isn't backed by a government keep it in a bank or carry it in your pocket. it exists solely on line. you can use it to get a hotel room on expedia, buy furniture on overstock or pay someone directly for a cup of coffee. bitcoin experienced a rise in value. when it first started pick up a single bitcoin less than a penny. last year that same bitcoin would hatch cost you almost $20,000. at one point. but it has been extremely volatile in terms of its price. leading some to question is it all just hype? >> i think it is a sort of get rich quick scheme. vast majority is hype. >> reporter: but the hype that led to wild price swings has not deterred the crypto die hards in san francisco. >> we are on our way to the crypto castle to meet up with jeremy. basically the king of crypto. i am going to buy $100 worth of bit coin.

today. hi, guys. here with "nightline," ax. back at the crypto castle, we meet a few crypto know mads. >> what got you into it? >> trying to find a way to send money back to china. and western union was charging 12.5% fees for transactions under $1,000 or something. i was making $15 an hour at the time. so, a 12% transact, fee on $1 'tis an hour worth of work for me after taxes. i was like, that sucks. >> reporter: what brought you you to the house? i ran out of usd, i needed a place. jeremy would let me pay in crypto. >> reporter: one problem with using bitcoin, the value fluctuates so wildly. >> nobody is going to buy a cup of coffee for $5 when the $5 could be worth $50 toechlt. >> reporter: consider at the crypto castle. one bitcoin $13,583 first thing

that morning. by end of the day the same bitcoin, $10,351. meaning, the rent could swing all most 25% in just a few hours. do you understand why people are skeptical of bitcoin? >> of course. how can you not be? it just looks like this speculative asset that isn't backed by anything. but then the more you learn about the history of money, the more you realize it's perfectly sound. look at the u.s. dollar. it's backed by our faith in the government to, to, act in our economic best interest. >> reporter: backed by our faith in the government that it is a sound government. and that there is an economy. >> yeah. >> reporter: and struck schur behind it. >> makes sense if you lift in the united states or the eu or china probably. but if you are in venezuela, the value of your dollar there, drops exponentially each and every day. bitsko bitcoin makes sense. >> some of the biggest believers

caution against betting it all. he made more than $1 million in bitcoin, wrote a piece advising against investing in it. >> you have $1,000. $5,000, not the best place to put your money. if you view it as speculative investment why. would you put your investment in something that isn't backed by anything. you need to have a conservative, belter investment strategy for the long term. >> reporter: do you not think there is a little chance we are in a bubble right now? >> it is possible to both be in a bubble and undervalued at the same time. depend on time. >> for jeremy heat of up in his castle he is confident there is a crypto future just beyond the horizon. >> in 2018 we'll see real world of deployments, blockchain technology, real estate, health care, in government. and i think at that point, this technology will become much more real to people. >> reporter: as for our buy-in. one month ago we bought $100 of bitcoin. now that $100 is worth $73.

>> remember when katherine bigelow won. i, i think it matters seeing, seeing it, and, hearing the names and, just it means so much to me to be nominated. >> ronan says watching gerwig behind the scenes was a lightbulb moment. i read you for the first time thought i could be a director too when you saw female director doing it? >> it wasn't until i watched greta speak about her experience and getting the film made how she sort of, crafted this, this style that, that she had developed that i kind of went, like, oh, she is a great director. she is not just an actor turned director. >> gerwig says she hopes to be an inspiration for aspiring female directors of all ages. >> women in their 40s, 50s, 60s i want them to go make their movies. make they had the it locked inside they haven't done it yet. >> is dad depressed? >> while lady bird senters around a mother daughter
