altamont pass. 101, san rafael from santa rosa, probl problem-free. a quiet ride across the bridge. no major problems on the peninsula right now. good morning everyone. i can tell you the 19-year-old man suspected in that deadly shooting at a shout florida high school is being questioned by authorities right now. nik lass cruz was booked into the sheriff's department hours ago. cruz is accused of murdering 17 people and critically hurting five others. abc news reporter maggie rulli is live with the latest. maggie? >> reporter: jessica, good morning. this is one of the deadliest mass shootings in u.s. history. now they're speaking with students to learn more about the shooter and find a possible

motive. >> overnight, police searched the home of suspected shooter nicholas cruz looking for any clues as to why hours earlier the 19-year-old opened fire inside his former high school. this video showing the terror inside the school. the sound of gunshots, too disturbing to prbroadcast. >> i heard the shot and i saw toot -- >> some students under desks, fearing for their lives. >> just like praying and crying. >> somebody down the hall was screaming, like help me, come save me. >> s.w.a.t. teams swarmed the school. >> he went from the third floor to the second floor. he may have a gas mask on now. >> in the chaos, the shooter walks right out with the other students escaping. he was later arrested with without incident. >> cruz was armed with an ar-15 rifle and wearing a gas mask.

school says he was expelled for disciplinary reasons. faculty had been warned to not let him on campus. >> reporter: the school here is closed through the rest of the week and the town has brought in grief counselors for the students starting this morning. maggie rulli, abc 7 news. reggie? maggie, thank you. it appears a hero during the shooting has died. according to the sun sentinel, the football coach protected a student by jumping between her and the gunman and pushing the student out of the line of fire. he was shot. there were conflicting reports his condition but the head football coach says his family was notified late last night that he had died. in addition to being an sis t t assistant coach, he had a role as a security guard. >> this is the 18th school shooting in 45 days. authorities say the weapon used was an ar-15 military-style

rifle. ar-15's have been used in vegas, newtown, connecticut, aurora, colorado and san bernardino. the rifle became legal when the assault weapons bans lapsed in 2004. we have posted this badge on our facebook page with caption, sending love. if you'd like to shar it to express your support with the victims in florida this morning, it is available to you. a school bus driver is under arrest accused of physically abusing a special needs second grader. police took 64-year-old kim clof son into custody yesterday. they say she grabbed a young girl at browns valley elementary school last week. the girl suffered abrasions from the assault and the district has now fired her. a high-profile stanford professor is not backing down despite opening a threatening letter laced with white powder. she's leading the attempt to recall the judge who sentenced brock turner. katie marzullo has more. >> i received a card that looked

at how much pollen is out there and what trees are producing it and the sharp change in the weather this weekend. frances, a couple new accidents? >> yes, mike. both involve big rigs. we'll head to westbound 80 approaching the core delia junction, there was a big rig accident. in the eastbound direction for those heading towards sacramento, sig-alert issued. a big rig, a jackknifed big rig blocks the right lane. it could be there for a while. here's interstate 80 for head lights heading westbound. so far it's looking good from hercules into san francisco. and here's the slow drive time. westbound 580, tracy to dublin is 35 minutes. a state senator on leave for sexual harassment allegations. why is he still introducing bills? smaller more o affordable living spaces near transit.

mendoza is not violating the terms of his leave. they say the bills were cleared with the secretary of the senate. mendoza has denied the allegations against him. new developments surrounding the state assembly member a leader of the me too movement. christina garcia was accused of sexual misconduct. now she's being removed as chair of the legislative women's caucus at the state capitol. two men accused her of improper sexual advances towards them. susan eggman will serve as interim chair. homeowners in the wildfire zone seem to be dealing with issue after issue. now a costly new problem. what to do with the thousands of burned trees getting in the way of rebuilding. wayne friedman found some answers. >> if a tree falls in the middle of a burned subdivision, does it make a sound? it does in sonoma county, also known as the land of high-speed

chains and flying wood chips. these, the last rites for dying dead trees. they number in the tens of thousands, maybe the hundreds of thousands. every burnt tree has a different story. but they share one element in common. they need to come down and be picked up. that gets complicated. >> no one really wants it. >> he's been a busy man lately. he runs a tree removal company. spent part of today in larkfield estates where most homeowners bear the burden of dealing with their burned trees. those homeowners include santa rosa's assistant fire marshal, paul loan that will who has three charred red woods in the remains of his backward. >> ultimately, it's my debris and my responsibility to remove. >> there are exceptions. if you own property with trees that have bright green paint or markings, you're in luck. those would be among the 11,000 trees that pg&e cut down. they're offering to remove the debris. >> we sent letters to 8800

customers who we thought had trees that qualify. >> how many people called you back? >> we have about 1200 logs to move or remove right now, as of now. the deadline is not until the 28th. meantime, at the end of the month, santa rosa will offer a program for its homeowners. free wood chipping and disposal in two locations. the only caveat, they'll need to get the trees there. >> we recognize the fact that it's not the perfect solution right now, but it's a step in the right direction. >> that is spoken like a man who not only works with policy, but is also living with it. in santa rosa, wayne friedman, abc 7 news. >> a lawmaker is proposing to fix the housing shortage by creating a new incentive for developers. the bill would reward the construction of small and more affordable apartments. the legislation would allow developers to calculate the number of units and fees by square footage.

if you're worried about allergies, you probably should be this time of the year. it's whether you take the medicine that really tips the scale, doesn't it? tree pollen will be moderate. weed pollen, grass pollen, mold spores low. the uv incompetent decdex will also. researchers can reverse alzheimer's in mice. a drug that cuts off a brain enzyme in mice was found to dissolve brain plaques connected with the disease. the drug could one day reverse the disease in humans as well. it remains to be seen whether the improvements in lab mice will translate to human beings. >> certainly hope so.

the san francisco skyline was a little more colorful last night. take a look at this. the developer of the sales force tower sells abc 7 news it was testing an art installation on top of the city's tallest building. jim campbell created this installation. it's going to feature images captured by cameras installed around the city. i saw this in person two nights ago. >> what did you think? >> caught my attention. i think it's going to look great. it definitely changes the night landscape for sure. fairfax police officers were dispatched to the post office after getting reports of kids skateboarding in the street. >> one officer took matters into his own hands. actually, his feet. >> whoa. yeah! >> look, officer has skills. surprising the skaters with that smooth kickflip. the officers moved the kids out of street before showing them up. >> that's pretty cool. want to talk about spare the air
