good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us on this sunday, november 19. let's start with a look at the weather with our meteorologist. >> good morning, everyone. we're starting out with a bit more cloud cover. live doppler 7 showing you the clouds around the north bay. we are just as cold as yesterday. 36 in santa 50 in san francisco. 37 in san ramon. partly cloudy throughout the afternoon. a few more clouds. upper 50s at the coast.

we're looking at a little light rape rain to begin your workweek. >> thank you. breaking news. an inmate who escaped from a correctional center overnight is now in custody. state officials say this man disappeared. staff could not find him during an inmate count around 11:15 last night. vaca turned himself in to the police department about and hour ago. he was serving a 12-year sentence for armed robbery. the chp says a suspected drunk driver drove through a closed construction zone killing his father, seriously injuring his mother. in the past week, two suspected fatal dui crashes have ripped families apart in the north bay. one happened tuesday. the latest happened yesterday in a construction area near highway

101 and san antonio creek. we have the latest. >> reporter: this is what's left of the now mangles chrysler s convertible. the driver was a 29-year-old man. his father was in the passenger seat and his mother was in the back seat. no one was wearing a seat belt. though the construction signs on highway 101 are highly visible, the driver still ended up on a closed road. >> there was a 30 foot gap in the free way that has yet to be completed. the vehicle traveled off the paved portion and subsequently struck a bridge abutment wall. >> reporter: you can see part of the path the car took before crashing into the open gap and falling 15 feet. the 69-year-old passenger died immediately.

the man's wife and son were rushed to the hospital. >> the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. the driver has subsequently been placed under arrest. >> reporter: this is the secretary fatal suspected dui in less than a week. on tuesday, on highway 12, police arrested the driver of this pickup truck after they say he drove head on into a young mother. she and her 7-year-old were killed. >> impairment being a factor in this, we all know that impairment can affect your judgment. >> reporter: chp has upped patrols and has all available officers on the roads this holiday week. abc 7 news. three people are recovering after a car hit them. it happened last night on 15th street.

police say they are expected to be okay. deputies are searching for whoever shot and killed a man as he was trying to sell an item he had posted online. it happened around 1:00 yesterday afternoon at a parking lot. the 32-year-old victim was trying to sell an electronic device to another person when he was shot. deputies say the shooter managed to escape. the identity of the victim could be released later today. police encourage you if you are selling an item in an online classified ad to meet the buyer at a police station or request something called a civil standby which means having an officer supervise the transaction. some police stations around the bay area, including daily city and fremont have what is known as a safe exchange zone. that's a special area set up specifically for doing business with people you don't know. it's monitored by cameras and

with police officers nearby. san jose firefighters confirmed yet a third person has died from an apartment fire o south 9th street. the bay area news group report a 14-year-old girl and her 21-year-old brother, a student at san jose state university, died at the scene yesterday. their 48-year-old mother died at the hospital. her shus husband is in critical condition. more on what may have caused that fire. >> all i remember is hearing people screaming. also glass breaking. >> reporter: they woke to chaos saturday morning. the upstairs unit of the apartment next door was on fire. >> smoke coming o of the windows. there was a couple or whoever were at the far end trying to get out the window. >> the flames were just unbelievable. >> reporter: a family of four

lived in the unit all trapped by the smoke and flames. >> we went to a third alarm, almost 100 firefighters. >> reporter: a neighbor says the family was hard working and kind. >> i wish this could have been prevented. >> reporter: in the apartment, there's little left. fire officials believe the intense blaze started in the kitchen. a fire extinguisher still hangs unused outside the kitchen door. >> we heard no smoke detectors. >> reporter: firefighters investigating if spomoke detects were using. >> for whatever reason, these poor people were not woken in time to get out safely. >> reporter: these people say the owner had no comment for us. in san jose, abc 7 news. the fbi and california highway patrol carried out raids targeting several locations yesterday afternoon. according to the santa rosa press democrats, it appeared to

gather motorcyclismotorcyclists. witnesses told the press democrat several motorcyclists were detained. the fbi tells abc 7 nerves agents served federal warrants at several locations and the u.s. attorney will release more information tomorrow. the postal service is sorting through damaged mail after a mail truck cause fire friday. the fire department sent us these pictures. the mail carrier was not hurt. postal workers are trying to see how much of that mail that was inside can still be delivered. investigators say the fire was not started by any of that mail and the cause is now under investigation. a foster city man faced up to 30 years in prison if convicted of molesting a child in jamaica. the department of justice says 43-year-old douglas peacock molested a 6-year-old in the

pool at a resort in june. he is being returned to san francisco to face the charges. 52 immigrants who hail from 21 countries took the oath to become american citizens. the naturalization ceremony in san francisco drew a huge crowd of family, friends and supporters who cheered as they were sworn in. the group included employees of many bay area companies, including auto desk and sysco. all shared a desire to become u.s. citizens. >> there's a lot of feelings, you know. i take pride in this. it's a really special day for me. >> the daughter of a pioneering civil rights leader fred karamatsu delivered remarks during the naturalization ceremony. lisa telling us whether it's going to have a little bit of -- we're going to have rain or a dry thanksgiving. >>switching up.

explo explore-a-torium. we enter the holiday period. thanksgiving just around the corner. what will the weather be like? lisa along shortly with a full accuweather forecast. closing arguments will begin tomorrow in the murder trial for the man accused of killing kate steinly. last week a judge ruled the jurors will be allowed to consider a first degree murder verdict as well as secretary degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. he is facing charges in the death of steinle in 2015. the defense calls her death a freak accident. happening today, family members who lost loved ones or have been injured in traffic crashes will march in san francisco. today is the third annual world day of remembrance for road traffic victims.

the goal, to call attention to those incidents. the memorial walk starts at 3:00 this afternoon at the 16th street bart station and ends at city hall where a vigil. a haloliday tradition took special significance last night. thousands of community members gathered for the fifth annual holiday lighting of sonoma plaza. many say the event was an opportunity for community members to come together and bond after last month's devastating wildfires. organizers also say they hope the lights will bring out of towners back to sonoma county. >> when you come in july, you come in october, you come in december, at any time of the year we're always welcoming. tonight, we showed that. >> 150,000 holiday lights were turned on at sonoma's historic town plaza. they are strung across eight acres and will be lit through the holidays. this is a story about selflessness, heroism and

bravery. last month, we today you about two napa men who made fire lines with bulldozers to keep the wildfire from spreading to the hidden hills community. we have more on how that neighborhood said thanks to those men. >> the strength and bravery that you showed. >> reporter: hidden hills is a close-knit neighborhood. but this saturday block party is not your usual one. it's a gathering of gratitude for two guys. >> it's a good feeling. >> reporter: in october, abc 7 news showed you the fire lines carved by bulldozers driven by eli and dan. they jumped into action and put dan's training from the marines into use. >> when dan and eli jumped on the bulldozer, it was incredible. it felt like we had a savior in our midst. >> we were the last line of defense. if it went past us, all the

houses were going to burn. >> reporter: neighbors wrote personal thank you notes, part of a celebration in true wine country style. everyone calls them heros. when you talk to them, you get the sense they're just two low-key nice guys. >> we didn't do it for this. we did it just to save the houses. we were running on adrenaline. >> reporter: the fire was moving closer to the neighborhood. many were evacuated. cal fire had limited resources to protect the homes. >> makes me realize how thankful. people do amazing things. it really makes a difference. >> we knew that we could make a difference if we worked together. that's what we did this whole time. standing and adjacent neighborhoods were left untouched. they are still getting adjusted to being so popular. >> you ride down the street all the time. now we know everyone. >> we're getting honked at.

>> thank you. santa rosa neighbors hosted a garage sale to benefit those who lost everything in the wildfires. everything for sale was free to fire victims. the organizer says she plans to hold another distribution event in april when she hopes more people who were forced out of their homes have new places to stay. >> a lot of people that have come today haven't found homes yet. they're trying to grab small things that -- blank eet, pillo that might help and maybe a room they're renting. >> an honor system was in place trusting those who took items were fire survivors. a san francisco institution has kicked off its annual turkey curbside donation drive. abc 7 was outside st. anthony's where you can drop off a turkey,

ham or gently used clothing. more than 600 turkeys were dropped off yesterday. they still need more. they expect to serve about 3,500 dinners on thanksgiving. >> it's very inspiring to work here and to see the generosity of the city come here to help their brothers and sisters who are less fortunate. >> you can drop off a donation today from 9:00 until 3:00 or between 9:00 and 4:00 monday through wednesday or 9:00 until 1:00 on thanksgiving day. st. anthony's is on golden gate avenue. the second harvest food bank needs thousands more turkeys to help families this thanksgiving. they have a goal of 24,000 turkeys to distribute to those in need. >> each month we feed about 257,000 people. today is a big part of that, especially for the upcoming thanksgiving holiday.

>> second harvest centers in san jose and san carlos are closed today. but you can donate tomorrow between 8:00 and 6:00. happening today, more than 9,000 runners will race through the streets of berkeley. the fifth annual berkeley half marathon. there are three races this morning. a half marathon, 10k and 5k race. there's still time to register. runners can sign up at the booth at berkeley high school at 6:00 this morning. the event is raising money for the berkeley public schools fund. good morning. we have a little bit of extra cloud cover around the bay. live doppler 7. we will widen the perspective. a little moisture offshore and a weak front moving in from the north. that will allow for rain to arrive just for some of you tomorrow morning. here is a live look outside where it's 50 downtown, 43 in oakland as well as mountain view in 40s.

it was 39 last hour in half moon bay. almost as cold as yesterday. festive looking where we have numbers in the 30s again from santa rosa to napa and novato. fairfield at 33. 41 in concord. clear, no visibility issues here. light rain in the north bay tomorrow. warmer for the week ahead. we are looking at more rain friday into saturday. that's a big shopping day. as we look at the next seven days, notice the green on monday indicating a weak system. as these bars rise higher, the chance goes up as well. thursday -- i should say friday is the best bet of rain into saturday. we are going to talk about tomorrow, which is a one on our storm impact scale. most won't see anything. it's a north bay event. it will be cloudy and dry for the rest of us.

we have high clouds into tomorrow morning, look at the rain. some is even pushing further north of santa rosa. it's going to be hard to pick up much at all. as we look at our forecast accumulation, you will notice we have a couple hundredths. over a tenth in santa rosa. maybe just some mist and drizzle along the coast. could see a little mist and drizzle into the east bay. likely to be maybe a slippery commute tomorrow. perhaps slow going. as for today, we are looking at temperatures very comfortable, upper 50s san francisco. 61 in oakland. 62 in fremont. notice the cloutds from time to time. that will allow for slightly cooler temperatures. we should see low to mid 60s. tonight, warmer with the cloud cover. 40s and 50s, and the rain moving into the north bay by the morning commute. milder numbers with the clouds on the south end of the bay. download our acoup weather app.

you can time out the rain in your neighborhood. the seven-day forecast shows today mild, in the 60s. upper 50s coast side. tomorrow morning, rain in the north bay, clouds for the rest of us. by tuesday, the clouds linger. look at the temperatures. 70s tuesday and wednesday. bay side, inland, and thanksgiving looks dry except late in the north bay we could see a sprinkle. that leads us to a rainier looking friday and saturday. a lot of folks getting up and out early on friday. that could be messy. >> yeah. i don't do that think. a lot of people do. >> they still do. >> they will brave the rain. they don't care. thank you, lisa. just ahead, it's not often you hear good stories about getting pulled over by police. these officers weren't handing out tickets. it was something many could use around the holidays.

the north bay wildfire zone, victims are not only worried aboutry building their homes but rebuilding them to current city or county codes. that can cost serious cash. >> reporter: when all the homes in the fire zones are rebuilt, they will be constructed to modern day standards, which for many will mean there will be upgrades like extra electrical outlets, updating plumbing. most demand the upgrades. most insurance policies don't pay for them. amy bach heads up a consumer group. >> to you and me means i can replace my home. but to an insurance company, it means subject to the terms and conditions of the policy.

>> reporter: what are the terms and conditions? you are scaring me now. >> the terms and conditions of an insurance policy is typically that it will put you back in the same position that you were in before a loss. >> reporter: that means the insured has to consider not only what they have now but what may be required later. sounds tough but state farm agent jake stewart says there's a way to deal with these costs. >> this can add significantly to the cost to rebuild. those policies the way that this is covered in the insurance world is through an endorsement. >> reporter: it's an add-on to your insurance policy. this endorsement adds on the extra cost of rebuilding to current construction codes. jake tells me state farm is all over this. brad sherwood backs him up. he is a state farm customer. >> that's where my broker gets an a plus. she was the one that said, we're going to up your premium to make

sure we're covered for this. i said, wonderful. of course, at the time i didn't know what she was talking about. i'm glad -- i trusted her. >> reporter: that tells you why you need a good agent. >> you definitely need a good agent. >> reporter: how much does this cost? about $50, sometimes a lot less. oh, my god. oh, my god. god bless you. oh, my god, thank you very much. >> we're going to give you a turkey to you and your family to enjoy. >> that was a surprise for drivers in texas. they were pulled over by police officers. but instead of traffic tickets, they were given turkeys. the turkeys were donated by a local business. the effort was part of operation peacemaker, a non-profit created by officers who raise money and provide assistance to families who are facing financial difficulties.

film business. >> i watch a lot of movies. i would watch a movie twice now. >> that's exactly what movie pass is hoping for. because they are paying theaters full price for every ticket sold, they could lose a lot of money. they have two ways of making it back. one is to get so many customers back into the movies that theaters, film companies and vendors will begin to share their increased profits with them. the other is that when you sign up, you give movie pass information about yourself and your movie viewing habits. they sell that to movie companies. >> no one really knows who sees which film. as a result, studios have to spend tens of millions of dollars marketing films where they should know -- like netflix knows exactly who is interested in seeing those films. >> for many it's a small price to pay in order to pay such a small price. >> i think i'm going to invest in that. >> you come three or four typti,

francisco yesterday. it's an 80 foot tall set up in front of 555 california street. it will be covered in 196,000 lights. the ceremony is set for wednesday, november 29. it's a fund-raiser. proceeds will go to the all stars helping kids relief project to help bay area communities rebuild after the wildfires. this is the final day of the north bay endurance challenge. we have a live look. the west sidewalk will be closed for several races today. the first two races kick off at 8:00 this morning. the half >> closer to the bay, numbers are chilly. oakland, 43 degrees.
