you're watg you're watching pictures coming in from the north carolina coast, as arthur, the first named storm of the hurricane season, makes its way up the east coast. >> packing wind up to 100 miles per hour. hurricane arthur upgraded overnight to a category 2 storm. forced the evacuation of thousand of vacationers and residents from north carolina's outer banks. but arthur is expected to weaken after it passes over the tar heel state. the deepening va hospital scandal is growing with news another veteran has died waiting for treatment inside a hospital. a veteran who collapsed at albuquerque veteran affairs hospital cafeteria just 500 yards from the emergency room. he died while waiting a half hour for an ambulance. witnesses say it appeared he was suffering a heart attack. hospital administrators say workers did follow policy by calling 911. next to a very different call for help. a mother and son trapped in their car after driving into a sinkhole. and just when they thought it

couldn't get any worse, it did. abc's alex perez has the story. >> reporter: it happened in seconds before juanita and her 15-year-old son, benjamin, could react, the road swallowing their car with them in it. you can hear the panic as she frantically dialed 911. >> hello? >> yes, please help! >> reporter: juanita and benjamin were out delivering newspapers just before 4:00 a.m. tuesday, driving down a dark road in rural illinois when their ford taurus tumbled into the broad sinkhole. the road had given way after epic rains in june, double the average for the region. mother and son were trapped. benjamin was hurt. then a bad situation got worse. a pickup truck literally drives over them. >> oh, my god, no! another car! >> okay, what just happened? >> i don't know. another car just hit. >> reporter: that pickup driver turns around. >> no, no. i just drove right over top of you? >> yes, you drove right over me.

this is "world news now." >> good morning on this independence day. i'm tahman bradley. >> and i'm reena ninan on this incredibly busy holiday. a lot of people want to know how this hurricane is going to affect their plans for the fourth. >> a lot of people have to change plans. i count cities in five states where they've modified big celebrations they were going to have. >> and we know that hurricane arthur is blowing ashore overnight after hearing of thousands of vacationers and ruining festivities up and down the east coast. >> the first hurricane of the year made landfall around cape lookout near the southern end of the north carolina outer banks. abc's matt gutman is getting drenched in the atlantic beach, where the winds are hitting 100 miles an hour. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, guys. coastal carolina is being pummeled and has been pummeled over the past several hours now. arthur a category 2, seeing sometimes gusts up to or over 100 miles an hour here. lots of rain coming down, too, 4 inches. but the problem right now for

lots of folks, power. i want you to see those dancing lights above me. they've been out for the past couple of hours. lots down there also out. we saw transformers explode right before us. that's how fierce this storm has been here, and it's caught a lot of people off guard. takes a couple of days to order an evacuation. nobody really thought the storm would come this far westward, but it has, making landfall much more closer to the north carolina interior than expected. we know that tens of thousands of people are without power now. probably by morning this fast-moving storm will be out of here. crews will start working on restoring power. but the major issue is going to be water, building up already. it started over the past couple of hours, but we're really starting to see levels rise. you can see it across the street. a lot of the roads in the coastal communities in the carolinas are going to be impassable, making it tough for people to try to get out of here if they want to.

tahman, reena? >> matt gutman braving the elements this morning. thank you. arthur has also spawned what's believed to be a tornado tearing through rose hill, north carolina. >> in fact, several homes in major damage. one man's ceiling collapsing as he got his kids out of the way. as the hurricane approached we spoke with dorothy killingsworth, from dare county emergency management about the preparations. >> early-morning hours are going to be the most difficult time. you know, the storm is here. the conditions are going to worsen. and everyone needs to be advised, until this storm is past us tomorrow morning at daybreak, the best thing to do is to stay indoors. plans are in place. d.o.t. has staged equipment. we'll have assessment teams out as soon as it's possible for them to get out. so, everything's in place to do what we need to do once the storm passes. >> dorothy killingsworth from

dare county emergency management. now let's turn to where arthur's predicted path is going. >> with so many july 4th plans up in the air right now, let's get the latest from accuweather's molly cochran. molly? >> thanks, reena and tahman. on thursday night, hurricane arthur reached category 2 strength with maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour. for the fourth of july, we still will experience heavy rainfall and gusty winds along the north carolina coast, also rough surf and strong rip currents going to exist from massachusetts down to new jersey, also including delaware and maryland. now, if you're headed out on friday night, perhaps to enjoy the fireworks show in atlanta, we will experience dry conditions, also in new york city. reena and tahman, back to you. >> all right, molly, thank you. we cannot emphasize enough, the people in the carolinas need to be careful. eastern carolina is bracing for a potential storm surge up to 3 feet. it's a very dangerous situation out there this morning. >> and moving up to virginia, reports of potential tornadoes around the virginia area, and you know, there was one air

force base in north carolina that actually moved some aircraft to ohio out of fear of storm damage. >> this was just a horribly timed storm because businesses have a lot of tourists this time of year, and so, they will be affected by this. >> stay with abc news as we cover hurricane arthur. look for more live updates from accuweather and the carolina coast later on "america this morning." wild weather also slamming arizona as monsoon season ramps up. an enormous dust storm moved across the phoenix area last night, temporarily grounding all flights and creating dangerously low visibility. 3,000-foot-tall hibbon blew in from the south, blew in by 45-mile-an-hour winds. and severe storms in virginia left a house in flames. lightning struck a tree over this home in roanoke, causing a huge branch to fall through the roof. a fire broke out on the top floor, sending smoke and flames shooting into the air. one person was inside at the

time but got out safely. one person has been killed and four others injured when fireworks being prepared for a fourth of july celebration exploded near a central texas high school. all the victims were members of the local kiwanis club, which has been in charge of the fireworks for nearly 25 years. a federal investigation has been launched. now to an amazing rescue of a hiker stranded some 5,000 feet up on the side of a cliff. when the guy called for help, he was told it might take hours. he said he couldn't hold on that long, and that's when a helicopter crew sprang into action. one secure is lowered down to the stranded hiker. he's strapped and then they both were pulled up to safety. amazing! well, two people have been killed after an overpass collapsed in a world cup host city in brazil. two trucks, a commuter bus and a car were trapped in the accident. the collapse took place on a main road that was being expanded for the world cup. a project that was not completed in time for the event. more than two years ago, the

luxury cruise liner "costa concordia" crashed into a reef and capsized off the coast of italy, killing 32 people. now for the first time, we're getting an inside look at that doomed ship that's been frozen in time. >> reporter: divers taking us on an eerie tour into the doomed "costa concordia," capturing haunting images of the disaster frozen in time. here winding up a case of stairs inside the vessel, then a reception area as it was left when passengers fled for their lives. finally, emerging from the water into the huge central atrium of the ship, murals still prominent on the walls. [ screaming ] it's been more than two years since the luxury liner slammed into a rock in shallow waters. within minutes, she started flooding and tilting. the ship is twice the size of the "titanic," and over the last year, we saw how they began hauling the ship up. we've been watching them slowly raise this hulk of a ship, which

weighs at least 100,000 tons, and we're beginning to see results. later this month, the vessel will be floated to a nearby port and scrapped, but these lingering images of the tragedy at sea. lama hasan, abc news, pretoria, south africa. the sheriff's office in alexandria, virginia, says it has increased jail security with the arrival of a libyan militant charged in the benghazi terror attacks. ahmad abu khattala was booked last month, held without bond. he faces a conspiracy charge, accusing him of participating in the september 2012 attacks that killed four americans. today's holiday can be a difficult one for military veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. experts say the loud noises created by fireworks trigger a very emotional response from veterans that may have experienced difficulties in combat. they say it's often fireworks going off at random as opposed to organized and scheduled displays that are the worst.

and residents from coastal north carolina. after passing over the state, arthur is expected to weaken as it moves up the east coast towards new england. well, a colorado teenager is behind bars this morning, accused by federal authorities of trying to help islamic extremists overseas. >> investigators say what started as a romantic relationship online blossomed into full-blown terrorism. abc's brandi hitt has the latest. >> reporter: after falling in love with an isis fighter online, federal authorities say 19-year-old shannon connelly, seen in this facebook photo, tried to help al qaeda-inspired radicals in syria. in newly unsealed documents, the fbi claims connolly, a certified nurse's aide, built a relationship with an islamic extremist through skype and believes jihad is the only answer to correct the wrongs against the muslim world. her smiling appearance also changed according to connolly's former classmates and neighbors.

good morning on this fourth of july. i'm tahman bradley. >> and i'm reena ninan. here are some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." hurricane arthur is battering the north carolina outer banks this morning after blowing ashore with 100-mile-an-hour winds. late last night, it's slowly moving northeast, unleashing tornadoes and flooding rain along the way. we're taking you live to the coast in just a minute. a blinding dust storm descended on the phoenix area last night, grounding flights at the city's main airport and making conditions hazardous for drivers. this huge wall of dust blew in from the south, fueled by 45-mile-an-hour winds. facebook's apology for a psychological study that manipulated users' emotions. is it enough? a privacy group wants the fed to impose sanctions on the social network. and the top contestants have

weighed in ahead of today's annual hot dog eating contest in coney island, new york. joey chestnut is seeking his eighth straight title, and sonya "the black widow" thomas is going for her third consecutive win. those are some of the top stories on this independence day, friday, july 4th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> well, we want to get right to arthur, which is taking aim at north carolina and the outer banks and several states up and down the eastern seaboard. it made landfall as a category 2 hurricane, battering the area. >> arthur came ashore in the outer banks, and just after 11:00 p.m. is when it struck, and fourth of july plans are being scraped as it moves up the coast. abc's kirk hopkins begins our coverage live from nags head. good morning to you, kirk. >> reporter: good morning to you, reena and tahman. i have to tell you, conditions have really deteriorated out

here. the wind is really a major factor, so we have a wind gauge. i'm going to give you an idea of just what the winds are like by using this right now, and taking a look, it says it's about 33-34, but i have to tell you, the wind gusts are much more powerful than that. it's very difficult to stand here and speak with you now. now, because of those conditions, county officials here have restricted access to the outer banks. sinister skies, rising tides, and whipping winds are heralding the approach of arthur. for many beach-goers, the hurricane means a short end to the long holiday weekend. >> i think it messes up the holiday for everyone. >> reporter: already, arthur is drenching parts of north carolina, wreaking havoc on the roads and making escape difficult for those fleeing his path. the hurricane is already claiming vacations as casualties. >> we had planned to go on a fishing trip today, and unfortunately, our trip was canceled at 5:00 a.m. this morning due to the weather. >> reporter: arthur's eye made

landfall near cape lookout after 11:00 p.m. eastern time. it's still a category 2 hurricane with winds around 100 miles per hour. evacuations are under way along north carolina's outer banks. residents and tourists gassed up and shoved off. >> we're packing up to head to safer grounds and hope that they call us back. >> reporter: for those planning to ride out the heavy weather, officials have somber advice. >> if you encounter high water, turn around. there's a very simple mantra there that don't drown, turn around. >> reporter: and back out here live, i can tell you, it's very difficult to continue standing here where i remain overlooking the ocean. if you're familiar with the nags head area, we're not too far away from the nags head fishing pier, and i can see out at the atlantic ocean. i can tell you that high surf is very much an issue here as well as tidal flooding. as you may remember just four years ago, hurricane irene washed away an entire highway.

so, that is still very much a concern. live in nags head, north carolina, kirk hopkins for abc news. tahman and reena, back to you. >> kirk, the image of your live shot is amazing. i hope you can hear us. i'm wondering about tornado warnings up and down the north carolina and virginia coast. what are you hearing about that? >> reporter: well, you know, as soon as arthur made landfall shortly after 11:00 last night, there were tornado warnings up and down the coast of north carolina as well as power outages. at last check, duke energy in north carolina said it had more than 21,000 customers that were without power. >> well, kirk, we know that 102-mile-per-hour winds have been reported in cape lookout. you mentioned one of the main highways there where you are. were people able to get on the roads and to get to safety? are there still a lot of people there this morning? >> reporter: you know, for most of the day, the roads -- there was a lot of really strong

traffic on the roadways here around the outer banks. and in fact, we spotted it outside our hotel. and the traffic volumes continued for most of the day. so, it appears that a lot of people were leaving, even when we were checking in and out of different hotels here. we saw that people were trying to get out of town. but at the same time, there were a lot of people that remained, and a curfew is in place until 6:00 this morning. >> and you've been in that position, kirk, all evening. do you get a sense that the worst is over? does it feel like it's really picking up right now? >> reporter: it really, really is, especially the wind gusts, very strong, especially in the last few minutes when we've been talking with you. >> all right. abc's kirk hawkins reporting live in nags head this morning. please be safe to you and your team and all those folks out there. >> incredible image there of kirk. a cold front and ocean temperatures could be steering hurricane arthur to its next move. >> yeah, for the forecast, let's turn to accuweather's molly cochran. molly, good morning. >> thanks, reena and tahman.

disturbing details about harris and how he spent those final hours before his son died. here's abc's steve osunsami. >> reporter: he claims it was a tragic accident, but in a packed georgia courtroom, prosecutors argued that 33-year-old justin ross harris left his 22-month-old son to die in a hot car on purpose. cooper harris died of heat stroke june 18th after more than seven hours in his father's silver suv. harris says he forgot to drop his son off at daycare that morning, but police shared that they have surveillance video of harris and his son eating breakfast at a chick-fil-a restaurant down the road just moments before harris strapped him back into the car seat and drove less than a mile in to work. >> and after he got his laptop back -- now, did the defendant immediately get out of the car? >> he did not. >> reporter: the judge ordered him held without bond. the lead investigator says police have video of harris returning to the suv after lunch. and during the day, they say

harris was texting lewd pictures to women who are not his wife, including one who was 17. >> we believe the evidence has shown that this was intentional. >> reporter: they argue he wanted a child-free life and searched the internet on child heat stroke death, but his attorney says it was a mistake any parent could make, that harris is deaf in his right ear and might not have heard his son. >> chick-fil-a and his mind went elsewhere. >> reporter: harris is charged with murder and second-degree child cruelty. he's pleading not guilty. steve osunsami, abc news, marietta, georgia. in south africa, the murder trial of oscar pistorius has been adjourned until monday, but not before some confrontational testimony. a sports physician said yesterday that pistorius likely acted on a fight-or-flight impulse when he fired through a bathroom door, killing his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. the chief prosecutor argued that pistorius acted methodically that night, first finding his gun and removing it from a holster before opening fire. more legal wrangling in the

ongoing fight for the los angeles clippers. the attorneys for disgraced owner donald sterling filed a motion yesterday to move the case into federal court. they claim his medical privacy could be violated if the trial goes ahead on monday. the trial is supposed to determine if sterling should be declared incapacitated, clearing the way for sterling's estranged wife, shelly, to sell the team for $2 billion. a south florida jury member accused of derailing a trial because he was tweeting during the proceedings will not be punished. sebastian garrido claims he didn't understand the jury instructions, even though the judge specifically warned jury members not to discuss the trial in person or on social media. a major food recall was issued overnight involving chicken from a california producer. the usda says it found a direct link between a chicken breast found from foster farms to a strain of salmonella that's made hundreds of people sick. as a result, foster farms issued a recall for 170 different chicken products that came from

his fresno plant in march. the recall covers chicken sold in california, hawaii, washington, arizona, nevada, idaho, utah, oregon and alaska. topping our health headlines, there is new data on driving while drowsy. nearly 4% of drivers admit to falling asleep while behind the wheel just in the past month. past research indicates as many as 7,500 fatal crashes each year may involve a drowsy driver. and drivers who admit to driving while sleep-deprived are also more likely to not wear their seatbelts. now to the green bay, wisconsin, cop who's trying to improve relations with skateboarders one shift at a time. >> he's officer joel zewicky, and he's traded in a squad car for a skateboard. he's trolling parks and places where skateboarders ride. >> he says the bad blood between skaters and cops goes back decades, so he's doing what he can to make relations better. good going for him. >> yeah, nice to see an officer in the community trying to help

you're looking at the pictures coming in the past few hours from the north carolina coast, where winds from hurricane arthur have topped 102 miles an hour. >> yeah, those are live pictures. arthur was upgraded to a category 2 storm overnight with 100-mile-per-hour winds and heavy rains, but it is expected to weaken as it moves up the east coast towards new england. but along north carolina's outer banks, the time for evacuating is long past, and those who chose to weather it behind are hunkering down. >> the threat has had both residents and vacationers racing for cover. abc's david curley is in nags head, north carolina. >> reporter: as arthur moved up the carolina coast, the sign for some vacationers was clear -- evacuate. >> they said go, and you're going to go? >> yeah. >> might as well. >> reporter: this woman from new jersey rode out sandy but arthur has her packing up her vacation. >> we're packing up to head to safer grounds and hope they call

us back. >> reporter: only cape hatteras is on mandatory evacuation, so thousands of residents and vacationers have to decide, stay or go? >> we thought we might leave, like maybe later this afternoon. >> reporter: the beyers of ohio are keeping an eye on the tv, the forecast of the first hurricane of the season which is gaining strength. veterans know taping windows doesn't work, so shutters and plywood are going up, even this new tarp-like astroguard to try to protect windows from flying debris, which can do this to a house or business. and businesses here are worried. that their cash registers will be hit by the storm. >> this is traditionally the busiest week of the year. the timing's not good for anybody. >> reporter: back at that vacation home, the beyers have made a decision about leaving. at this point you're going to stay? >> i believe now, yes. yeah, i think we're going to ride it out. >> reporter: this really is the bull's eye for hurricane arthur, and it will be the earliest

hurricane to hit north carolina in recorded history. david curley, abc news, nags head beach, north carolina. >> all right, thank you, david. this has been just devastating to tourism industry down there. further south in hilton head, they said it was going to be business as usual. we know before the storm hit, tourism officials had expected about 250,000 people to travel to the outer banks for the holiday weekend. obviously, those numbers will be down and people will not be out shopping and doing the things they otherwise would have done. tourism, just the worst time for this storm to come in. >> hatteras island we always know ends up getting hit, and there's a 50-mile stretch of highway, highway 12 that connects this island to the mainland. it's expected to get hit. when hurricane sandy came in, it actually put that bridge out of functioning for about two months. so, they're expecting sand and a lot of storm coverage, but we'll be right back with a lot more on this hurricane. be right back with a lot more on this hurricane.

people head back to their homes. as you know, this is a vacation rental community, especially during the summer months. a lot of people from out of town. a lot of people following those orders, and they are staying inside for the most part so far. >> kirk, we know about 250,000 people were expected to be there this weekend, holiday season. do we know when the coast might be clear? is it expected saturday or sunday to be better weather conditions? >> reporter: well, reena, at least according to that curfew, they're allowing people to return to the streets as early as 6:00 later this morning. so, it sounds like authorities are fairly confident that the hurricane and all of the weather conditions that come with it should be well out of the outer banks region by then. >> let's certainly hope so. thanks so much to abc's kirk hawkins reporting live from nags head. thanks so much. well, ocean temperatures and a cold front in the northeast could steer hurricane arthur into the hours ahead. >> yeah, let's get the latest from accuweather's molly

celebration to last night rather than tonight. but because of another storm hitting the region, the fireworks show was earlier than had been planned, and the kbobo pops were forced to cancel the traditional 1812 overture, and concert goers were told to leave immediately afterwards because of the severe weather. in the midwest, thousands watched the spectacular show above the skies of columbus, ohio. it's a tradition that's been going on for 34 years. people staked their spots hours before the show gets going. on this july 4th, another fast-moving wildfire is erupting in california, this one in the hills of eastern san diego county. flames tore across rugged terrain toward the historic mining town of julien, destroying two homes and threatening hundreds more. by nightfall, crews were able to manage the fire and stop it from spreading. holiday celebrations in julien have been canceled. and crews battling that stubborn fire in northern california's wine country are making progress.

enough to lift most of the mandatory evacuation orders. flames are moving uphill, consuming dry vegetation away from residential areas. full containment is expected next week. in middlebury, connecticut, flames have devoured an enormous mansion owned by motivational speaker larry janesky. about two dozen water tankers were brought in for the firefighting efforts. the house is a total loss, but everybody got out safely. and the suspect in california who gained fame because of his mug shot facing a serious charge. 30-year-old jeremy meeks was dubbed the sexiest felony when his mug shot went viral. he was indicted yesterday on a federal gun charge. if convicted, meeks could face up to ten years in prison. he's being held on more than $1 million bail. there's more fallout this morning over a facebook psychological study. a privacy group says the social network "purposely messed with people's minds" two years ago and should be held accountable.

the electronic privacy information center wants the federal trade commission to impose sanctions on facebook. facebook manipulated the news feeds of hundreds of thousands of users to see the effect on their moods. and we're seeing a ripple effect on the stock market from good economic news. the dow jones industrial average finally cracked the 17,000 barrier yesterday, thanks to an excellent unemployment report. most analysts think the bull market still has room to run and the record close on wall street is fueling overseas markets this morning. most of the asian exchanges are up. and here's a guy who has plenty of money to invest in stocks or anything else he wants. he's the winner of last month's huge powerball jackpot. 58-year-old roy cochran picked up his nearly $260 million check there in nashville yesterday. he is taking the lump sum payment, which means he gets just over $115 million after taxes. he says he plans to donate a lot of the money to charity. good for him. >> very nice. that brings us to a family

you're watching pictures coming in from the north carolina coast, as arthur, the first named storm of the hurricane season, makes its way up the east coast. >> packing winds of up to 100 miles per hour, hurricane arthur upgraded overnight to a category 2 storm, forced the evacuation of thousands of vacationers and residents from north carolina's outer banks, but arthur is expected to weaken after it passes over the tar heel state. the deepening va hospital scandal is growing with news another veteran has died waiting for treatment inside a hospital. a veteran who collapsed at the albuquerque veteran affairs hospital cafeteria, just 500 yards from the emergency room. he died while waiting a half hour for an ambulance. witnesses say it appeared he was suffering a heart attack. hospital administrators say workers did follow policy by calling 911. next to a very different call for help, a mother and son trapped in their car after driving into a sinkhole. and just when they thought it

i want you to see those dancing lights above me. they've been out for the past couple of hours. lots down there also out. we saw transformers explode right before us. that's how fierce this storm has been here, and it's caught a lot of people off guard. takes a couple of days to order an evacuation. nobody really thought the storm would come this far westward, but it has, making landfall much more closer to the north carolina interior than expected. we know that tens of thousands of people are without power now. probably by morning this fast-moving storm will be out of here. crews will start working on restoring power. but the major issue is going to be water, building up already. it started over the past couple of hours, but we're really starting to see levels rise. you can see it across the street. a lot of the roads in the coastal communities in the carolinas are going to be impassable, making it tough for people to try to get out of here if they want to. tahman, reena?

force base in north carolina that actually moved some aircraft to ohio out of fear of storm damage. >> this was just a horribly timed storm because businesses have a lot of tourists this time of year, and so, they will be affected by this. >> stay with abc news as we cover hurricane arthur. look for more live updates from accuweather and the carolina coast later on "america this morning." wild weather also slamming arizona as monsoon season ramps up. an enormous dust storm moved across the phoenix area last night, temporarily grounding all flights and creating dangerously low visibility. 3,000-foot-tall haboob blew in from the south, fueled by a 45-mile-an-hour wind. and severe storms in virginia left a house in flames. lightning struck a tree over this home in roanoke, causing a huge branch to fall through the roof. a fire broke out on the top floor, sending smoke and flames shooting into the air. one person was inside at the time but got out safely.

one person has been killed and four others injured when fireworks being prepared for a fourth of july celebration exploded near a central texas high school. all the victims were members of the local kiwanis club, which has been in charge of the fireworks for nearly 25 years. a federal investigation has been launched. now to an amazing rescue of a hiker stranded some 5,000 feet up on the side of a cliff. when the guy called for help, he was told it might take hours. he said he couldn't hold on that long, and that's when a helicopter crew sprang into action. one rescuer is lowered down to the stranded hiker, he's strapped, and then they both were pulled up to safety. amazing! well, two people have been killed after an overpass collapsed in a world cup host city in brazil. two trucks, a commuter bus and a car were trapped in the accident. the collapse took place on a main road that was being expanded for the world cup, a project that was not completed in time for the event. more than two years ago, the luxury cruise liner "costa

concordia" crashed into a reef and capsized off the coast of italy, killing 32 people. now for the first time, we're getting an inside look at that doomed ship that's been frozen in time. here's abc's lama hasan. >> reporter: divers taking us on an eerie tour into the doomed "costa concordia," capturing haunting images of the disaster frozen in time. here winding up a case of stairs inside the vessel, then a reception area as it was left when passengers fled for their lives. finally, emerging from the water into the huge central atrium of the ship, murals still prominent on the walls. [ screaming ] it's been more than two years since the luxury liner slammed into a rock in shallow waters. within minutes, she started flooding and tilting. the ship is twice the size of the "titanic," and over the last year, we saw how they began hauling the ship up. we've been watching them slowly raise this hulk of a ship, which

weighs at least 100,000 tons, and we're beginning to see results. later this month, the vessel will be floated to a nearby port and scrapped, but these lingering images of the tragedy at sea. lama hasan, abc news, pretoria, south africa. the sheriff's office in alexandria, virginia, says it has increased jail security with the arrival of a libyan militant charged in the benghazi terror attacks. ahmad abu khattala was booked into the jail last week. khattala is being held without bond. he faces a conspiracy charge, accusing him of participating in the september 2012 attacks that killed four americans. today's holiday can be a difficult one for military veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. experts say the loud noises created by fireworks trigger a very emotional response from veterans that may have experienced difficulties in combat. they say it's often fireworks going off at random as opposed to organized and scheduled displays that are the worst.
