outpouring of anger. the streets of cairo are once again a war zone. we're overlooking tahrir square, just down the street from where we are is the u.s. embassy. we can see the security forces who are meant to be guarding the embassy, firing tear gas at the protesters, trying to push them back. but the crowd is going nowhere. they are digging in and getting ready for a fight. many thousands anticipating to take part in a million man march. a call to protest by the muslim brotherhood. police in riot gear launching tear gas canisters into the sea of violent protesters. it's now the fourth day of anti-american demonstrations, fueled by an amateur film called "innocence of muslims." many here say the movie is blasphemous, denigrating the prophet muhammad. >> do not come here. >> reporter: what is your message to america? >> my message is to stop. stop disrespecting us. >> reporter: back in the u.s., police and reporters surrounded the california home of the man who allegedly produced the controversial film. police tell abc news, nakoula basseley nakoula, a 55-year-old egyptian christian, used the assumed name sam bacile to make

and promote the movie. nakoula apparently told police he wrote the movie while serving time in federal prison last year on charges of bank fraud. this morning, after seeing the violence his film has sparked, he tells abc news, he now fears for his life. following an investigation into the killings at the u.s. embassy in benghazi, there are reports that four people have been arrested. the libyan prime minister has said, expect more arrests. george? >> we'll keep an eye on it. thanks very much. we're going to turn to the big economic news here at home. that could affect your money. ben bernanke announcing dramatic new moves to pump up the economy. bianna golodryga with more on that. start out by explaining what the fed is doing. >> reporter: the fed announced an aggressive program to buy back about $40 billion of mortgage-backed securities every single month. what does that mean? you saw huge response in the stock market. your 401(k) is going to bounce

up from that. you'll feel like you have more money in your pocket and you'll spend more money. businesses will do the same. interest rates remain low, near zero, through 2015. that will inspire people to go out and buy homes. anything to retrigger the economy for both. >> and investing, as well. when i spoke to mitt romney, he's been critical of ben bernanke. he won't reappoint him if he is elected president. he says this won't work. and the fed has tried this stimulus before. what is different this time? >> reporter: they tried this twice before. this is an open-ended project right now. they're determined to bring the unemployment rate down. he's been sober about this, ben bernanke. he said it's going to be above 7.5% by 2014. there are risks, too. a lot of people are saving money right now. they're not being rewarded for that, especially the elderly who rely on their savings accounts. some people warn of the risk of inflation. the fed says they don't see any signs of inflation for the next few years. in my interview with mitt romney, we cover a lot of other ground, including how he's

preparing for the crucial debates with president obama, what he thinks of new polls that have him falling behind. and whether he regrets the first comments he made after this week's violence in egypt and libya. romney accused the obama administration for showing, quote, sympathy for the protesters. romney said the president was displaying a shoot first, aim later attitude. and that's where we began. >> i thought the statement was inappropriate. and pointed that out. now, our attention is focused on the loss of life and the tragedy of having a remarkable ambassador and diplomatic members had their lives taken. >> you said the statement showed a tendency to sympathize for those who waged the attacks. where do you see it shows sympathy? it was done before the attacks happened. >> the statement stayed on the website for 14, 15 hours. the statement was reiterated after they had breached the sovereignty of the embassy. >> coupled with a condemnation

of the attacks, though. >> even after the killing in libya. and by the way, what i said was exactly the same thing conclusion the white house reached, which was that the statement was inappropriate. that's why they backed away from it, as well. >> no direct response when the president says you shoot first and aim later? >> well, this is politics. i'm not going to worry about the campaign. >> reporter: but as the campaign heads for the home stretch, romney facing criticism not just from president obama, but from conservative allies, too. with some questioning why he's not doing better in this bad economy. >> the republican party cannot win in this environment. it has to get out of politics. >> if you can't beat barack obama with this record, then shut down the party. >> reporter: a new batch of polls highlights those concerns. romney trailing in swing states like florida, ohio and virginia. what do you say to the hand-wringing? >> beating an incumbent is never easy. the president exudes an air of friendliness and likability. which is endearing. but at the same time, people recognize he's not done the job they expected him to do.

and that he promised he would do. >> but you're falling further behind. why aren't you doing better? >> well, i am doing well. i'm virtually tied up in the polls. we're doing well in swing states. the outcome is decided by the people in the middle. and i believe as they look at who they believe can get this economy strong again and create jobs again and rising wages and take-home pay for middle income families, they're going to say i've got the best prospects for doing that and i'll get their nod. >> let's talk about iran. you've been critical of the president's policy. prime minister netanyahu has suggested he wants more clear, red lines from the united states. what's your red line with iran? >> my red line is iran may not have a nuclear weapon. iran is a nuclear nation, is unacceptable to the united states of america. >> president obama said exactly the same thing. he said it's unacceptable for iran to have a nuclear weapon. your red line is the same as his. >> i laid out what i would do to keep iran from reaching that red line. i said that crippling sanctions

needed to be put in place immediately. that combined with standing up with iranian dissidents. the president was silent when dissidents took to the streets of tehran, the president was silent. in addition, i think ahmadinejad should have been indicted for incitation to genocide. >> but your red line going forward is the same? >> yes, and recognize that when one says that it's unacceptable to the united states of america, that that means what it says. >> you mentioned president obama's likability. we had a poll question this week, asking who would you rather have dinner with. right now, president obama is beating you by about 19 points on that. try and convince people that they're wrong. bring us inside. what would dinner be like at the romney home? >> it would be chaotic. you'd have grandkids climbing all over you. probably some food would be thrown from one side of the table to the other by one of my grandkids. it would be a lot of fun. i can't tell people who would have more fun at whose table. but i think the american people

are looking for someone who has the capacity to help them get good jobs and more take-home pay. and i do. >> let's talk about the debates. >> hello. >> what have you learned as you studied about all this about president obama as a debater? what are you looking for? >> i think he's going to say a lot of things that aren't accurate. you know, i'd be tempted to go back to that wonderful line by ronald reagan, there you go again. but you can't use something that's been -- >> bill clinton used that about you at the democratic convention. >> as another president once said, there they go again. >> i didn't happen to see that. but i think the challenge that i'll have in the debate is that the president tends to, how shall i say it? say things that aren't true. and in attacking his opponents i've looked at prior debates. and in that kind of case, it's difficult to say, well, am i going to spend my time correcting things that aren't quite accurate? or am i going to spend my time talking about the things i want to talk about? and that's the challenge you always have. >> what do you do? >> well, that's a challenge you always have. and that's a judgment you make. >> do you have any rituals you use to get ready?

>> well, ann always gives me the advice, as i get ready to go up on the stage and offers a few words of encouragement. and i look to her when i'm in the debate. i look and see her. typically, her eyes are down. she's more nervous in the debates than i am. she says, i wish i could debate instead. she says, i wouldn't be as nervous. i look to her. and when she's smiling and confident, that gives me the boost i need. >> governor romney, thanks very much. >> thanks, george. >> big moment coming up on october 3rd. lots more on all this week's politics coming up on sunday on "this week." now, let's get the top stories with josh. >> we're going to begin with breaking news, on what's being called a major terrorist attack foiled overseas. authorities in kenya have arrested two people they say were in the final stages of planning an attack there with explosive device, weapons, and ammuniti ammunition. they are suspected to be working with an al qaeda group from

somalia, hoping to keep peacekeeping troops out of somalia, a hotbed of activity. pope benedict has just arrived in the middle east, for what is being called a pilgrimage of peace. alex marquardt is in beirut this morning with the latest. good morning to you, alex. >> reporter: good morning, josh. this is the pope's first trip to the middle east since the arab spring began. it could not come at a more important time. for starters, because of the bloody civil war raging just next door in syria. but also because of the protests at the american diplomatic posts across the region. it comes as christianity in the middle east is struggling. there's been an exodus by christians by the tens of thousands. leaving the countries that they have lived in for centuries. the pope will be bringing a message of peace, not just for the war in syria. but between muslims and christians during these very turbulent times. josh? >> alex, thank you for that. meanwhile, more than 30,000 people have been forced to evacuate because of a massive volcanic eruption in central

america. ash was two miles into the air and pushed lava 2,000 feet down those slopes, not far from a popular tourist area. thankfully, no injuries have been reported. here at home, it is not the same. a horrifying accident in las vegas. witnesses say that a car speeding out of control hit bottom, flew into the air, and plowed into a bus stop. four people were killed, eight seriously injured. the man behind the wheel now faces felony drunk driving charges. finally, you saw this at the top of the show. a wild scene inside an apple store in southern california. bandits driving that suv, plow right through the front windows. then, they smash and grab every iphone, ipad, ithing they can get their hands on. the problem, though, they then have to back out. as they got stuck in the isecurity gate. eventually, they rammed their way out. problem, they left their license

plate in the process. >> oh. >> and wouldn't you know it? later when the driver went back to get it, returned to the scene of the crime, you see where i'm going with this. >> are you serious? >> i can't believe that. they went back for the license plate? >> they went back. i guess you don't see the police waiting. but, yeah. they went back. >> he went back for his warranty on the iphone. all right, josh. >> and a new charger. >> and the new charger. exactly. we're going to turn, now, to prince william and princess kate, the royal couple told this morning, just this morning, that a french magazine has published topless photos of the princess on a private vacation. that news coming right in the middle of their big overseas tour through asia. and they're in malaysia, a mostly muslim country where kate is appearing in public in veils. abc is not showing the nude photos of princess kate. but bob woodruff has the latest from kuala lumpur. bob?

>> reporter: good morning, elizabeth. this has been a successful trip for the duke and duchess. but overnight, the atmosphere has absolutely changed. and william and kate are furious. the royal couple learned about the shocking photos as they ate breakfast, just a short time prior to visiting a local mosque. the pictures are said to be taken at this secluded french estate, where william and kate spent four days prior to this tour. a palace source tells abc news, that at first, the couple simply felt saddened. but as the day wore on, the sadness turned to shock and anger. in a statement just hours ago, st. james palace called the invasion of privacy grotesque and unjustifiable. and said it was reminiscent of the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of diana. it is unthinkable, the statement said, that anyone should take such photographs, let alone publish them. it was 15 years ago that princess diana left a hotel in paris and sped away from paparazzi in hot pursuit. she was killed in a paris

tunnel. just after william and kate were engaged, the prince expressed his concerns about the paparazzi, and had given kate the chance to get out of the relationship if she thought the attention would overwhelm her. >> i wanted to give her the chance to see it and back out if she wanted to, before it all became too much. >> reporter: at the visit to the mosque, kate removed her shoes and wore a stylish head scarf. because of security concerns, this event was not part of the public schedule. what the people were not told about the couple's appearance at the mosque because of security issues, you can see they did know they were coming here to the park, the biggest crowd we've seen yet. as the couple greeted a crush of admirers, the smiles on their faces did nothing to hide their anguish. kate and william said late today they wanted to continue their focus on this tour on behalf of the queen. elizabeth? >> bob, thank you so much. we're going to turn to "gma's" legal analyst, dan abrams. dan, the photos are on the

newsstands this morning in france. what legal options does the palace really have as they consult their lawyers? >> remember, generally, they don't sue the media. they've had a policy of not suing the media. this is more egregious in a sense you're talking about a long lens, on vacation, and in france, where the privacy laws are very tough. the problem is, yeah. they're tough. except with what's the remedy? it's a fine. and a lot of these media organizations are happy to just pay that fine and have the picture because there's going to be, as you point out, no way to literally prevent the photos from making it to the newsstands and certainly not on the internet. >> that's why undoubtedly the magazine did not let the palace know a week ago, when they took the photos, that they had them. >> they would have had a hard time getting an injunction to prevent them from publishing it anyway. this tends to be after-the-fact punishment. >> the palace, in a statement this morning, invoked the memory of princess diana and said that

of the top of her new purr perfume. >> she was pressed like her perfume bottle? >> no, she wasn't. let's get to kelly rutherford. she is speaking out about the devastating custody ruling that sent her two american children overseas. her german ex-husband was expelled from the u.s. and barred from visiting this country. so, the judge ordered the children to move with him in france. we're going to speak with rutherford who did visit her children last week, in a moment. but first, linsey davis joins us with the very latest on this story. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, elizabeth. she's played in lots of dramas. but none with a story line that could have prepared her for this. kelly rutherford has been reduced to a visitor in her children's minds, all because of what some are calling one of the worst custody decisions ever. >> you're home early. >> reporter: on the hit show

"gossip girl," kelly rutherford plays the matriarch, a man hhatn mom with serious style. last month, a judge ruled her two, young kids, just 3 and 5 years old, must remain halfway around the world, with their father in france. a very distraught rutherford appeared on "the view" on thursday. >> the children are still in france? >> yeah. they're in france. i left them about a week ago. >> reporter: they've been visiting with her ex-husband over the summer. and when rutherford asked for a stay, which would have brought the children back, that stay was denied. giersch is a citizen of germany. and he can no longer enter the u.s. so, in order for them to have a 50/50 care taking split, the children must stay in france. and rutherford has to travel back and forth to see them.

>> her celebrity status hurt her. the judge feels she's the typical hollywood actress mom, who has plenty of money. and can basically jump on a plane at will and go visit her children in a foreign country. >> reporter: giersch released a statement through his lawyer, saying he was looking forward to co-parenting the children. and continuing contact with kelly. but rutherford plans to appeal. >> my little girl said, i want to come home, momma. i want to come back to new york. my son has been brainwashed that where he is so much better. he says momma, i love you so much. you're in my heart. >> how old is he? >> 5. he'll be 6 this month. >> reporter: fighting to bring her children back home. for now, her children have started school in france. meanwhile, rutherford has to stay here in new york, as "gossip girl" starts shooting this week. she has to keep working to pay her legal bills to keep fighting

to bring her children back. kelly rutherford joins us now, along with dan abrams. it was hard for you to watch that clip of yourself talking. >> it was. >> how were the kids when you saw them last week? >> they were happy to see me. i was happy to see them. you know, they're beautiful. >> how do you explain to them what's going on? i mean, i have kids around. my youngest is the age of your oldest son. how do you explain this? >> you know, i just do it in a way that they know they're loved. i say mommy loves you so much. mommy's in new york. she's working. i'm going to be here as much as i can be here. i think about you every day. i do skype with them every day. so, i sort of remind them and give them hugs and kisses through skype. you know, give each other a kiss and hug for momma. >> but with this judge's ruling, when are they supposed to come back to the united states? >> i have no idea. >> there isn't any date set? >> no.

>> no. >> indefinitely? >> the judge, i've used this phrase before. i think the judge served as a travel agent here. what's the easiest travel for the kids. easier for the kids to stay in france, rather than kelly to bring the kids to bermuda or canada or places he could visit with them. the problem is, to just look at it that way, to just say, it's easier for travel this way, leads to the conclusion, which is leading to your question. wait a second. now, the kids are never going to be coming back to the united states? and according to this ruling, there is nothing that would indicate that the kids can, should or will come back to the united states. >> kelly, had the children ever been in france before this? >> their entire lives they had lived in new york city. they were going to school here in new york city. they're american citizens. you're an american citizen. >> yes. >> you had joint custody? >> yes. >> or full custody?

>> i was the primary parent but joint custody. >> as the primary parent, you would have had them 60% to 70% of the time. >> correct. >> and now, it's turned on its head. they're living in a country they've never been in before. >> he's a german citizen. >> why is he living in france? >> kelly would know that better than i would, why he's living in france. >> i guess his mother's boyfriend has a home there. >> okay. your husband's visa was revoked in the united states. why? >> we don't know. nobody will -- i keep asking to get that information. and it's refused. he refuses to say why -- >> there has to be a reason. there's allegations of some sort of wrongdoing, right? >> you don't -- his lawyer has suggested that allegations alone get your visa revoked. that's not the way it works. allegations made. the state department has looked into things. and there's a lot of questions of how the state department started looking into this. there's questions about did the state department begin looking

at this first? or did a lawyer for kelly reach out to the state department when there were concerns about possible abduction. that investigation led to his visa being revoked. but regardless, the state department made a determination. not kelly's lawyers. not the judge. the state department decided, there's a reason that this guy should not have a visa to be in the united states. >> so, this judge has awarded, basically, full custody of your children, in a country they have never lived in before, they're not citizens of, your husband's not a citizen of. and you yourself was during the divorce, was afraid that he might abduct your children. >> i brought all this up. and it was brushed off like it was nothing. >> he now has to try to get back to the united states. it's so unlikely. one of the conditions, well, this is just temporary. don't worry. he's going to continue to try to get in the united states. and kelly has to try to help him.

>> how do you get through this? >> you know, i'm hoping that somehow, someway, this will help change the way that the court makes their decisions. maybe that's why it's happening. >> it's hard for you. >> it is. i don't want to start crying again. i'm just thankful that everyone's taken an interest in it. that alan dershowitz has taken an interest in it. i hope people will continue to. i hope it will create change and get my kids home as soon as possible. >> we'll keep on top of it. and keep us posted on what happens with your legal battle, kelly. and good luck to you and your two babies. >> thank you. >> dan, thank you so much. let's check in with ginger zee and a look at the weather. she's in for sam champion. >> last of the 80s for a while. cold air coming in. boston, 66. not so much in l.a.

was it justified? or was it murder? prosecutors argue, the answer is right here. >> it is unjustified and unreasonable killing. >> reporter: in the video raul rodriguez recorded in the night he shot his neighbor, we see kelley danaher, hand on his heart. the video rodriguez thought would clear him. >> i brought my video camera because i really believed that if i had documentation of this, that we could take this to court. >> reporter: you also brought a handgun and a lot of ammo. >> yes. i had a concealed handgun license. and it was perfectly legal for me to carry that weapon. >> reporter: did you need to bring a handgun and ammo to that situation? >> i carried a firearm everywhere i went. >> reporter: rodriguez had a concealed weapon license.

and knew all about the stand your grand law, which allowed you to use deadly force if you were in fear for your life. >> i'm in fear for my life. >> no one had weapons. no one was menacing. no one was aggressive. there was no guns. no knives. not even words that justified anything he did. >> reporter: did hthey recover any weapons from the scene other than yours? >> i don't know. >> reporter: you know the answer. >> i don't know. >> reporter: you know the answer. they didn't find any. >> okay. i don't know. >> reporter: at the end rodriguez was found guilty of murder. kelley danaherst's widow is trying to keep them alive. the verdict is a victory for all of the neighbors. >> their children can enjoy being in that neighborhood like we did when we grew up.

gender and she brought her baby with her and breast fed the baby in class. claire shipman has the story. >> reporter: the first week of classes at american university. and assistant professor and busy single mom, adrienne pine woke up to a baby with a fever. with no emergency sitters on-hand, and not wanting to cancel her first lecture, she brought her infant to work. >> it wasn't the ideal option. but the fact that there was no ideal option. and it was the best of the options available to me. >> reporter: her baby, lee was fine at first. but then, she started to fuss. and pine did what she always does at home, on buses, at restaurants. breast fed her. and she continued with her class while she did it. >> people seemed largely charmed by the humanity that i think children can bring to a workplace environment, without necessarily detracting from the seriousness. >> reporter: then, she learned of this tweet from one of the students. sex, gender and culture professor, total feminist, walks

in with her baby. midway through class, breast-feeding time. when the school paper got wind of the story, the campus was buzzing. >> it's very distracting to a lot of the students. >> reporter: many were supportive. >> she let us know that she was about to do it. i wasn't too surprised. i think she handled it in a really, the most professional way she could. >> in a situation like this, which is unique. and she wasn't making a habit of it, we really need to cut her some slack. >> reporter: she's hoping at least her actions will spark, not just controversial, but a deeper discussion about how wrenching child care struggles can be, especially with people with no cushion. >> we set up child care so that not every single woman in the workplace is facing these issues of an individual. but rather, we're discussing them together. >> reporter: now, the university has pretty much stayed out of it.

scene. it was three years before they inspired the first-ever "gma" mosh pit. now, three albums coming out from this supergroup. called "uno," "dos," and tres." thanks for getting up extremely early. billie joe, this is what bands used to do. you had to do three albums in four months. where did you get the idea? >> basically, just started writing a bunch of songs. we had a handful of songs. instead of doing a double record, we had around 30 songs, we decided to keep going. we were having a good time with it. so, we're like, let's put out like a three-volume set. >> how are they going to be different? do you intend them to land differently? >> the first record is classic, green day sounding. it dates back to "kerpluk" or

dookie." and the next one is garagey. like a hot tub meets hell. and the third one is like a finale of the three. so, it's pretty -- to start off with writing a few songs and ending up becoming epic in the long run. >> and world tour starting in november. excited to get this music to the masses? >> yeah. playing theaters on the west coast. and then, it's off to the races after that. >> again, it was "american idiot," for which this band won a grammy. also, an incredible musical that's touring the globe. we want to hear from that. let's listen to "holiday," shall we? >> let's go. >> hey, hey. ♪ hear the sound of the falling rain ♪
