closure in san mateo and hercules. all the details and a look at friday morning road work coming up. >> good friday morning. thank you for joining us. i'm eric thomas. kristen is off today. topping our news, the latest twist in a bizarre multiple murder case will take police to a pittsburgh landfill later today. they will look for evidence in the disappearance of a hercules man whose father and three other people were murdered. terry mcsweeney is live in hercules. terry, all these crimes lead back to one man. >> lead back to one man indeed. police from here in hercules heading to a landfill in pittsburgh to search for the body of frederick salas missing since saturday. the 35-year-old salas was last seen at his house in hercules, a house where murder suspect 38 efren valdamoro, he lived there on and off. last saturday they found the father's body, rick salas.

they fought the week before. one officer wrote i saw ricardo on tap of valdamoro lying face down on the floor. valdamoro was completely naked. it may have been over 46 cindy tran, valdamoro's girlfriend who he killed tuesday in richmond before chp officers killed him. frederick salas coworkers are hoping for closure. >> they're very sad. everybody's so sad. they don't know what happened. i told you that i'm praying for his recovery. somebody or whatever, i hope that we will find him. >> police have also found two bodies in vallejo in a house tied to valdamoro. it focuses on the crimes in hercules and police know they have their first homicide of the year already with the discovery of kick salas' body last saturday and today they're going to pittsburgh to search that landfill. they do believe they're going to

be finding a body. certainly not looking at places where they might find him alive, looking for the body of frederick salas. terry mcsweeney. >> thank you very much. this afternoon the husband of one of the victims is scheduled to be arraigned in solano county superior court on charges of chemicals and explosives including radioactive material. he was found living in the home where police found the bodies of mart and allen. both were long-term acquaintance of valdamoro. for the past 16 years charles rittenhouse has worked as an engineer in fairfield. he told authorities the items came from his job but investigators say they checked and that's not true. depleted uranium may be among those items. federal investigators will begin their investigation this morning into what caused a small plane to crash into redwood shores lagoon killing all three people on board. officials say the twin engine beach craft queen had just taken off from san carlos airport for

a short flight to san march teen. the plane belonged to 92-year-old businessman and world war ii veteran. officials say he and the pilot are still inside the plane and can't be removed until the ntsb arrives today. the body of a female passenger was recovered. the livermore mother charged with having sex with two boys under the age of 15 is due back in court today to enter a plea. 42-year-old christine hubs was arrested last month. she delayed entering a plea during two court appearances. faces 67 felony charges, accused of having sex with the boys over a two-year period. classes should resume as normal today at two east bay high schools after a disturbing incident. newark police officers spent three hours at bay bridge point high after someone reported seeing a student pass a gun to another. police locked down the campus and students were escorted out a few at a time with their hands up.

there was a brief lockdown at kennedy high with a possible connection. police found no weapons at either school. danville three 12th grade schools are recovering after becoming sick from brownies laced with marijuana. the girls told officials boys gave them some sort of chocolate before class. school officials say they are investigating the incident. a san francisco woman was elated to learn her dog had been found seven years after it disappeared. she got word thanks to the microchip implanted in her pet named little girl. but before she could get to the vet's office he had given the dog away. more on her tale of frustration. >> little girl was my little girl. she was part of the family. >> mary was crushed when her dog was stolen seven years ago and elated when just nine days ago she got a call in the middle of the night that her dog had been found. >> your little girl has been found. you need to go pick her up at

the emergency vet hospital. >> she rushed to the veterinarian clinic where the dog had been scanned and a microchip found but by the time she got there the dog was gone, given back to the couple that brought it in. >> they were still wanting to keep the dog and felt it was their dog. >> the manager of the clinic said he called the peninsula humane society and was told anyone who finds a dog and keeps it 30 days without anyone claiming it, the dog is pretty much theirs. >> again, it's not a law. it's what most shelters use as a general rule of thumb. >> the clinic's manager said he heard the same thing from the san mateo police. >> because the people had the dog more than 30 days, under the law it was their dog. >> does that make sense to you? >> it doesn't make sense to me but i'm bound to abide by it. >> when mary got to the clinic with the dog's license and papers and police report from seven years ago, none of that mattered. >> my dog had been given to the person that brought the dog in.

live picture from our rooftop camera. a bit of the bay bridge in the backgrounds on the ferry building. it's a spare the air day. if you are working today -- remember, it's a holiday weekend so some people aren't. if you are working today, mass transit is a good idea because the air quality will not be very good. caltrain officials are warning their budget problems will get worse. it's projecting a $30 million deficit in the 2011-2012 fiscal year. they will talk about possible fare increases and service cuts as the agency tries to balance a $2.3 million deficit. the board of directors decided not to end weekend service as least for this year. the board is expected to approve a final budget plan in october. bay area travelers and travelers across the country are preparing to hit the road this labor day weekend as the summer travel season comes to a close. aaa predicts more than 4 million people in the state will travel 50 miles or more this weekend.

that's an 11% increase over a year ago. 3.5 million people will be going by car with gas prices down by 7 cents a gallon over the past month. most of the other half million travelers will fly. wall street could start the morning on a positive note. stock futures are up and most asian markets climbed overnight but the jobs report due out at 5:30 this morning is expected to determine the direction of trading. here's rob nelson, the "moneyscope" report. >> good morning. we begin your "moneyscope" report with the monthly unemployment report coming out this morning. economists predict the rate will go up slightly, however a number of americans filing for first-time jobless claims fell last week. retail sales were up in august. major chain stores say sales rose 3.3%. back-to-school shoppers gave retailers the biggest boost. the numbers show americans were either looking for the biggest bargains or are still waiting for them.

with mid-50s. our highlights. it's going to be hot inland today. we have one more spare the air day. and that would take over the east by valleys and the santa clara valley. the bay and the coast a little wind shift today. the cooling begins and it will cool everywhere. this wind will move inland over the weekend. let's take a look what's happening. you see the clouds gathering along the coast during the overnight hours pushing inland by 8:00. well, inland this case being the bay. then they're pulling right back to the coast by noon. so we should have sunshine just about everywhere with a few pockets developing at the coast but definitely keeping you cooler today at the 60s, 70s the bay, 80ss north bay and south bay and definitely 90s in the east bay valleys. 90s in the south, saratoga, camable, los gatos close at 89. the peninsula san mateo southward low to mid-80s. millbrae 78 degrees. mid-60s along the coast today. downtown at 72, south san

francisco 75. sausalito also 75. mid-60s along the north bay beaches with mainly cloudy conditions. mid to upper 80s in your inland valleys. may make it to 91 in sonoma. richmond, berkeley, oakland mid to upper 70s. low to mid-80s for everybody else. east bay valleys, upper 90s. monterey bay low to mid-70s with more cloud cover than even yesterday. low to mid-90s inland. temperatures around the bay tonight, we'll be low to mid-50s in the north bay. the a's in town to take on the angels. it's a fireworks night out at the coliseum. pretty comfortable with mid 70s dropping to mid-60s. your holiday weekend, see temperatures drop nearly 10 to 15 degrees by sunday. maybe a small warming trend monday as the marine layer goes away and a cooling trend tuesday and wednesday and temperatures could be mid-70s inland, mid-50s at the coast.

both governor schwarzenegger and attorney general jerry brown have refused to depend prop 8 in court. israeli and palestinian negotiators meet today to try to begin hammering out a framework for a permanent peace deal. the prime minister and mahmoud ahmadinejad came to the state department yesterday for their first direct peace talks in two years. the leaders pledged to work together but each outline concessions they require from the other. >> and i respect your people's desire for sovereignty. i'm convinced that it's possible to reconcile that desire with israel's need for security. >> we want the israeli government to look forward to its commitment and lift the embargo over the gaza strip. >> they will meet again in the middle east with an eye towards

forging an outline of a peace agreement. it is turning into the summer of gridlock in china. the latest massive traffic jam is about 90 miles northwest of beijing. it's estimated that 10,000 trucks are abacked up for 70 miles. apparently this is all due from trucks transporting coal from mines that just opened up. last week a 60 mile traffic jam lasted ten days. the government is planning to build another road but until then residents can expect more delays. alameda's fire chief is put on administrative leave. just ahead at 5:30, the gallon of gas that's gotten him in serious trouble. >> i'm terry mcsweeney live in hercules where investigators today are going to be going to pittsburgh to search a landfill for a fifth murder victim all tied to just one man. the story in a live report. >> and the government is just minutes away from releasing the august unemployment numbers. coming up, what they can tell us about the strength of the economic recovery. >> and remember that cool air

♪ i'm terry mcsweeney live in hercules with the latest developments in a killing spree that spans three bay area cities. today investigators from hercules going to pittsburgh to search a landfill for a body. the story coming up in a live report. >> on the peninsula, federal aviation investigators will be back at the scene of a plane crash that killed three people. and the san carlos city council votes to disband its police department. the san mateo county sheriff's department will take over law enforcement duties in the city.

>> a live look from our roof cam this morning. we have clouds that are starting to build across the bay and along the coast. yesterday was the hottest day in the forecast. we'll show you who gets the cooling today and how far inland it will spread. it's a spare the air day for one more day. >> caltrain has issued a full freeway closure in san mateo and hercules. all the details coming up. >> it's a friday morning. 5:28. thank you so much for joining us. i'm eric thomas. kristen is off today. later today police will comb a pittsburgh landfill for clues for the aware abouts of a missing hercules man. his murder may be linked to four residents this week. terry mcsweeney is live in hercules and there's one man at the center of this bizarre murder case. >> yep. his name is efren valdamoro. he is already tied to four killings. and today investoigators from hercules are going to pittsburgh to search for a fifth victim.

that would be 35-year-old frederick salas. he has been missing since saturday, the same day police went to the home that salas and his father rick shared with valdamoro and found the body of 73-year-old rick salas. they suspected one of the salas' to be involved with his love interest, cindy tran. killed tuesday night before officers shot and killed him. friends of tran say they are at the vallejo salon where she worked. the relationship with valdamoro had gone from sweet to very sour. >> the very last time i saw her alive was when he was in there and he just like cowered over her as she worked. >> as you can tell, the problem with this case is almost everyone connected to it is dead including two women that lived in vallejo and knew valdamoro. the only person alive who may be able to tie it all together is

in jail right now on explosive charges. eric has more on that. live in hercules, terry mcsweeney, abc 7 news. >> thanks, terry. this afternoon the husband of one of the victims is scheduled to be arraigned in solano county superior court on charges of possessing chemicals and explosives at terry said including some radioactive material. charles rittenhouse was found living in the vallejo home where authorities found the bodies of smart and allen. both were long-term acquaintances of valdamoro. for the past 16 years charles worked as a chemical engineer if fairfield. he told authorities the items came from him job but investigators checked and that's not true. uranium may be among those items. >> the atf located a container that was labelled depleted geranium. they're not sure -- i spoke to them this morning. they're not sure what the item is until it's analyzed. they can't confirm or deny

that's what it was. >> depleted you're -- you are rain number has a number of industrial uses. a memberfall service will be held. tran was found strangled to death at valdamoro was shot and killed by police officers in richmond. 20-year-old andrew barrientos was flown back to the bay area yesterday from san diego where he was caught near the mexican border saturday night. he's charged with the attempted murder of todd young last friday. young is improving but remains in serious but stable condition. this afternoon the 23-year-old man arrested with barrientos at the mexican border is scheduled to be arraigned in an oakland courtroom as accessory to attempted murder charges. the city of san carlos is a step closer to getting rid of its police source.

the city council outsourced services to the san mateo county sheriff's department. it will save $2 million a year. all police officers would become sheriff's deputies and without losing bay or benefits. the san mateo board of supervisors has to sign off on the deal. on the peninsula this morning, federal officials will begin investigating what caused a small plane to crash into redwood shores lagoon killing all three on board. one was bob boreman, a bay area businessman and world war ii veteran. the twin engine beach craft queen has taken off for a short flight to san martin. kayakers, fishermen and people on the sharp rushed into the water to try to help. >> the three people on the shore jumped in and swam toward it. got as close as they could. there was gas, fuel so they couldn't get close to it. >> the bodies of boreman and the pilot are still inside the plane

and can't be removed until later today. the body of a female passenger was recovered. dave capler was placed on administrative leave that he used gas pumps to fuel his person vehicles. the city manager did not give a reason for taking capler off duty but someone leaked this photograph of capler filling his bmw at a department pump last month. he's not popular with some firefighters who took a no confidence vote against capler last year. capler said he was allowed to use city gas under a verbal agreement with the former city manager. the labor department just released the latest unemployment figures. the august jobless rate increased to 9.6%. that's the first increase in the national jobless rate since april. companies added 67,000 jobs in the private sector. the jobless rate is up 9.5% in

july. growth will likely remain weak the rest of this year. they say the jobless rate could go back to 10% by early next year. almost 5:34. a holiday weekend. labor day weekend. let's find out what's going on weatherwise today and over the weekend from mike. already know it's a spare the air day. >> especially the santa clara valley and east bay valleys. spare the air because of poor air quality for your neighborhoods. the other big story we'll touch upon, the cooling trend. doesn't quite reach inland. only about 2 degrees cooler in concord today but 6 in oakland, 7 degrees cooler in san jose. redwood city and san francisco 11 degrees cooler than yesterday. about 12 hours, 54 minutes and 17 seconds of sunshine. it will take our temperatures in the mid to upper 50s in most neighborhoods, even 60 at palo alto and low to mid-60s in the east bay valleys, and it will kind of hold them at bay,

emily is live in atlantic beach, north carolina. what's going on right now? >> eric, good morning to you. it has become a beautiful day. sure didn't start off that way. by midnight winds were pounding here. the rain was coming down. surf so strong it came up to the bottom of that pier. now people are enjoying the day so relieved that right now the storm has not lived up to what we feared it would be. this is it hurricane earl as it began to move past atlantic beach, north carolina, overnight. gusting winds, rain and rough ocean water but not as bad as many expected. brushing the outer banks as a category 2 storm after people here spent days preparing for what was a category 4. >> north carolina dodged the bullet. and we are open and hoping for a tremendous labor day weekend. >> officials evacuated 100,000 tourists in the outer banks and

closed the roads behind them. even though earl is no longer a major hurricane, it could pose plenty of problems up the eastern seaboard. take this seriously and be prepared but don't panic. the governor of massachusetts declared a state of emergency thursday. overnight president obama signed an emergency disaster declaration that clears the way for federal response there. it mirrors the response to earl in north carolina. >> we'll be staging commodities such as water, food, as well as generators. >> fema set up a staging area at fort bragg bringing flatbed trucks loaded with generators and enough supplies to feed 50,000 people through the weekend. people from north carolina to cape cod aren't quite ready to blink just yet. there are thank you bridges that lead to the barrier island. both shut down last night because earl came in. now that earl has passed they

reject the claim by jaycee dugard. they're recommending the courts handle claimant. dugard was kidnapped when she was 11. she's now 30 and was held captive for two decades by paroled rapist in his home in antioch where she was discovered last year. they admit parole agents didn't properly supervise garrido. a route on the peninsula for california's high speed arail system. they will run along the caltrain line from san francisco to san jose to the pass. if it all sounds familiar, that's because the rail authority chose the same route in 2008 but a lawsuit filed by environmentalists in 2009 forced officials to start the route selection process all over again. an independent study finds no accuracy problems with pg&e's smart meters.

peak there. some of the clouds starting to gather, and that is the sea breeze that is returning and will bring us some cooler weather over the next 24 to 48 hours. yeah, that's time for the holiday weekend when we kind of officially put summer to rest. let's take a look at those temperatures. still running mid to upper 50s through the north bay valleys through san francisco, oakland, half moon bay. antioch 73 degrees. monterey bay, thick fog. visibility to a quarter mile in some areas and temperatures in the mid-50s. highlights, this is a spare the air day for the north -- excuse me, the south bay. santa clara valley and the east bay valley. that's where you'll find the poorest air quality. the bay and the coast, you get that wind shift off the ocean so cooling begins for you today and moves everywhere over the weekend. let's take a look how this is played out as far as cloud cover. the marine layer about 1,000 feet deep.
