search a pittsburgh landfill for the possible fifth victim in a string of murders involving a hercules man shot and killed earlier this week by chp officers. they're looking for the body of frederick salas. his father was murdered last week and the primary suspect in that case valadamoro was shot and killed last week. more information about the confrontation that may have started the rampage. >> he walked from the fight with a black eye. he told police one of his girlfriend's tenants ricardo salas woke him up and started punching him. the police officer wrote in his report, "i saw ricardo on top of valdamoro lying face down on the floor. valdamoro was completely naked. the son joined in in the fight. but both father and said it was valdamoro who attacked. the officers summarized their

side of the story like this. when valdamoro got out of bed, he attacked ricardo by punching him in the face several times. ricardo told me he had to defend himself so he fought back. he went to valdamoro's room to confront him about a letter valdamoro had written ricardo to stay out of valdamoro's relationship with girlfriend cindy tran. in the letter, valdamoro called ricardo a liar and a back-stabber. valdamoro claimed to be the victim in this fight but friends of cindy tran portray him as intimidating." >> the very last time i saw her alive was when he was in there and just like cowered over her. >> perhaps his rage from the fight continued to build and motivated him to kill. one week after the confrontation, ricardo salas was found beaten to death inside the hercules home. police blame efren valdamoro. they also think he strangled cindy tran. they don't know if he did anything to frederick salas but

they have their suspicions. he is missing. his coworkers are worried. >> they're very sad. everybody is so sad. they don't know what happened. as i told you that i'm praying for his recovery, you know, somebody or whatever. i hope that we will find him. >> the police report is too much to handle for the resident living near the hercules home where the fight and murder took place. >> extremely shocking, alarming and scary. >> she tells us she is so very afraid especially since one man is still missing. police may be closing in on his whereabouts. their investigation is now taking them to the landfill. in hercules, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> this afternoon the husband of the one of the victims is scheduled to be rained in solano county superior court on charges of possessing chemicals and explosives including radioactive material.

charles rittenhouse was found living in the vallejo home where they found the bodies of smart and allen. both were long-time acquaintances. for the last 15 years charles rittenhouse worked in fairfield. he said the items came from his job but investigators checked and that's not true. among those items may be depleted uranium. >> the atf located a container labeled depleted geranium. they're not sure what the item is until it's analyzed. they can't confirm that's what it was. >> depleted uranium has a number of industrial uses. police won't speculate what rittenhouse planned to do with it. meantime a memorial service will be held at the salon where the suspect's girlfriend tran worked. she was found strangled to death by officers in richmond.

this morning the man accused of shooting a fremont police officer is in the alameda county jail. 20-year-old andrew barrientos was flown back to the bay area yesterday from san diego where he was caught near the mexican border saturday night. he's charged with the attempted murder of officer todd young as he was serving a warrant last friday. young is improving but he's still in serious but stable condition. this afternoon the 23-year-old man arrested with barrientos at the mexican border is scheduled to be arraigned in an oakland courtroom. on the peninsula federal aviation officials will begin their investigation what called a small plane crash that killed three people in redwood shores. it went shortly after takeoff and crashed into a lagoon. one of the victims was a businessman and world war ii veteran. lisa amin gulezian has more. >> the shock is hard to hide for those standing near the redwood shores lagoon. three people died after a twin engine beach craft queen plane

came screaming out of the sky and crashed. >> we felt it shake when we came over. i'm sorry, it was pretty close. >> when he was at that height, angle of attack, i thought he needs to level out. when he did the rollover, i thought that's it, it's over. i reached for my phone and called 9-1-1. >> before help could arrive, kayakers, fishermen, even strangers on the shore rushed into the water. >> three people on the shore jumped in and swam as close as they could. there was a lot of gas, fuel around so they couldn't get up close to it. >> the plane belonged to 92-year-old report boreman. he and the pilot are still inside the plane. their bodies can't be removed until the mtsb arrives but the body of a female passenger was recovered. >> he was a b-17 pilot during the war. >> boreman had two passions in life, flying and the steel

company he founded 56 years ago. the fulfilled the already contaminated diamond channel. last week 48,000 gallons of sewage spilled into much of the lagoon, including the same area. >> it was our hope that we would have the lagoons opened up for recreational use again by the labor day weekend. >> and now that there's a plane in it? >> more than likely that will not happen. >> signs are up saying the lagoon is off limits. but still several tests need to be done to measure the new level of contamination. lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. >> time now 4:38. the city of san carlos is a step closer to getting rid of its police force. the city council voted last night to outsource police services to the san mateo county san francisco's department. the move will save the city about $2 million a year. under the agreement all san carlos police officers would become sheriff's deputies and without loss of pay or benefits. the san carlos police station

would become a sheriff's substation and the police chief would become a sheriff's department captain. the supervisor has to sign off on the deal. the labor department will release the latest unemployment figures. many economists feel the rate will increase to 9.6%. that would be the first increase in the national unemployment rate since april. it was 9.5% in july. analysts say growth will likely remain weak the rest of this year. it could go back to 10%ed by earl next year. time for a check on the forecast. it's a holiday weekend. >> we have poor air quality possible down in the south bay, the santa clara valley and up into the inland areas of the east bay, mainly the east bay valleys and some of the east bay hills. everywhere else you can see the sea breeze bringing cooler and -- well, cleaner air to the coast, the central bay and parts of the south bay. in the north bay they will be moderate. be careful in the east bay valleys and south bay.

we have heat but it's mainly the east bay valleys with mid to upper 90s once again. palo alto southward we have mid to upper 80s. san francisco 72, mitch mond 76. upper 80s north bay valleys but notice the clouds along the coast. temperatures here in the low to mid-60s. holiday forecast, spare the air again today. tomorrow temperatures will drop i'd say about 4 to 6 degrees across the board. we'll notice the biggest drop inland on sunday as we drop about another 6 degrees. we may see a little uptick on monday and some sunshine breaks through and a cooling trends will begin again on tuesday, wednesday and a lesser extent thursday. megan with the first look at traffic. >> good morning. cal tran hard at work on your commute. interstate 80 through the berkeley area. traffic moving nilesly here as you head westbound but you will find there is a full freeway closure in hercules eastbound 80. the ramp to eastbound 4 is

car at home. the board that considers compensation for state crime victims is advised to reject the claim of the mother of jaycee dugard. the board is recommending the courts handle the claim. dugard was kidnapped in south lake tahoe in 1991 when she was 11. dugard who is now 30 was held captive for nearly two decades by paroled rapist in his home in antioch until he was discovered last year. the state admitted parole agents did not properly support vise garrido and agreed to a settlement with dugard and his two daughters fathered by garrido. an independent study fines no accuracy problems with pg&e smart meters. thousands of consumers complained about high energy bills after installing the devices. the public utilities commission hired a consultant to test the meters. it criticized the way pg&e

wind and rain are lashing the north carolina coast this morning and storm warnings are in effect all the way up to maine. the storm is still powerful but has weakened to a category 2 storm. this is earl we're talking about. a live look at the north carolina coast right now. long island and new england are bracing for the impact of the storm with power crews on alert as far away as michigan. emily schmidt has more from north carolina. >> this is hurricane earl as it began to move past atlantic beach, north carolina. rough ocean water but not as bad as many expected. it's brushing the outer banks as a category 2 storm after people here spent days preparing for what was a category 4. officials evacuated 100,000 tourists from the outer banks and closed the roads behind them. even though earl is no longer a major hurricane, it could still polls plenty of problems up the eastern seaboard. >> just to be able to be mindful of what could be happening is

critical over the next 18 hours. >> take this seriously and be prepared but don't panic. >> the governor of massachusetts declared a state of emergency thursday. overnight president obama signed an emergency disaster declaration that clears the way for federal response there. it mirrors the response to earl in north carolina. >> we'll be staging commodities such as water, food as well as generators. >> fema set up a staging area in fort bragg bringing in flatbed trucks loaded with generators and enough supplies to feed 50,000 through the weekend. the eye is much less defined but people from north carolina to cape cod aren't quite ready to blink just yet. parts of the outer banks are reporting power outages this morning but here the rain's expected to move through by midday with clear skies by the end of the day. in atlantic beach, north carolina, emily schmidt, abc news. >> hurricane earl could

complicate airline travel as earl twists towards the east coast. many larger airlines are allowing travelers to change flights with no penalty. the airlines include american, delta, jet blue, united and u.s. airways. flying could get a little dicey with hurricane force winds. you should check with each airline for specific information about rebooking your deadlines and you can always sch check flt delays at abc7news.com. winds are so powerful, it moved that camera over to where mike stands to give us the weather forecast. time for a look at the forecast. mike, what do we have in store. >> take a look at live doppler 7, show you what's going on over in north carolina where they're getting lashed, the outer banks out towards the northeast corner elizabeth city with the heavy rain. but thankfully as we talked about over the previous couple of days the bulk of the storm system would definitely move away or stay out to shore. so good news for those folks. all right.

let's talk about what is going on as far as outside here today. we do have a little fog starting to roll in, and that is cooling some temperatures. look at this. we're on the low to mid-50s around a lot of areas because of some of the fog that is starting to hang out near our neighborhoods. and, in fact, let's go ahead and take a look at our current temperatures. you can see that we're well cooler than we were yesterday at this time. temperatures are running in the 50s and the 60s. in fact, we have about 61 fremont, 62 san jose. down around the monterey bay, cloudy conditions, even fog, thick fog and temperatures in the low to mid-50s. all right. look at this. 13 degrees cooler in san francisco, 12 fremont. 6 in concord and oakland to 9 in novato. our highlight, going to be hot inland today with a spare the air day. the bay and the coast will feel that wind shift and that cooling sea breeze. it will cool everywhere as we look through the weekend.

let's check out our highs for today. we'll see that we're going to drop just a little bit down in the south bay. mid to upper 80s to near 90 in campbell. as we look on the peninsula, low to mid-80s elsewhere. mid-60s cloudy conditions. low to mid-70s sausalito with mid to upper 80s through the north bay valleys. mid to upper 70s richmond, berkeley, oakland. low to mid-80s the rest of the east bay shore. mid to upper 90s. low 90s around hollister, gilroy. 93 morgan hill and low to mid-70s most of the monterey bay. let's take a look at your accu-weather seven-day forecast. you can see how it will be cooler tomorrow and again on sunday. in fact, temperatures in most areas about 10 to 12 degrees cooler than today. you may see a little warming trend on mondays. the marine layer won't be nearly as thick as tomorrow and sunday but then it returns on tuesday and drops our temperatures about 6 degrees. we lose another 6 degrees on wednesday. i hope you have a great holiday

has been traced to a broken underground sewer line. airport workers traced the leak by snaking a video camera through a pipe installed in the 1980s. airport officials aren't sure if it ruptured on its own or damaged during the renovation. it's uncertain how long it will take to fix because it's hard to reach. how long will it cost to drive on the new expressway lanes. the lanes will run from pleasanton to milpitas. they'll be the first toll lanes in northern california. the price to use them will vary depending on traffic, as little as 30 cents when traffic is light to $6 or more during peak commute hours. striping begins next week and the lanes will open on september 20th. the coast guard says it has seen no oil in the water from an explosion and fire on a rig in the gulf of mexico that occurred about 90 miles off the coast of louisiana. 13 workers on the rig were forced to jump in the water to

escape flames. they were there two hours before being rescued. >> it wasn't a blowout. it doesn't appear to be a spill and it doesn't appear to be -- that's our priority, taking care of our people and facilities and environment. >> the rig's operator mariner energy says no drilling was taking place at the time. the explosion took place 200 miles east where the b.p. well blew up in april. in arizona one of the most painful openings to a political debate. here's jan brewer during her opening remarks. >> we have done everything that we could possibly do. >> governor brewer later described the moment on wednesday night as a brain freeze. she bolted from the question and answer session with reporters after they pressed her to explain her remarks that bodies had been found beheaded in the
