people at the heart of the matter. 38-year-old efren valdamro. tuesday he strangered her during a high-speed chase to richmond where he was killed by chp officers. they were chasing him because of what they believe he did at a house in hercules, tran, where he lived on and off. the body of 73-year-old ricardo was found there. his 35-year-old son was missing. he's still missing. police are learning more about the suspect but are far from having all the answers. >> someone you can describe as an 8:00 to 5:00, working lifestyle person. someone who had relationships with people and generally borrowed money and availed himself to the use of their vehicles and things like that. >> we always knew there was something about him. but, you know, he loved him so we loved him.

>> the family of tran believe that valdamro, that she had broken up with valdamro and as a result he was very upset about the whole thing. another story has developed where the salas brothers was involved with tran. they're still looking for the body of frederick salas today and they're going to continue until they find him alive ideally but as time goes by they don't think there's a great deal of chance on that. two more bodies found in vallejo along with other things which makes the story bizarre. i'll tell you, eric has more on that. vallejo police are saying they are not saying who the suspect in these other killings are. eric, you have more on that. live in hercules, terry mcsweeney, abc 7 news. >> terry, we do have more. an autopsy will be performed on the bodies of the two women found murdered in the vallejo home. investigators are trying to figure out how efren is tied to the death. the victims are two friends, 63-year-old rita allen and

60-year-old carol smart. neighbors say for the past decade she lived on and off to the home where the two were found. adding to the confusion, allen's husband, charles rittenhouse continued to live in the house after reporting his wife missing sunday. he possessed a cache of highly explosive materials in the home. investigators are trying to determine if he played a role in the women's death. they're still actively looking for people they believe helped a gang member shoot a police officer. charged with attempted murder in last week's shooting of officer todd young in oakland. they believe he had a lot of help trying to flee to mexico after the shooting. >> anyone who came in contact with barrientos, we are charging him with a crime. anyone who assisted him, housed him, tried to take care of him, we will prosecute them to the

fullest. i want that message out loud and clear. >> another trying to sneak barrientos across the mexican border is an accessory to attempted murder of officer young. another blood drive is being held today for him from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at fremont city hall. last night people came together to raise money for the officer and his family. here's lisa amin gulezian. >> they're buying raffle tickets, drinks and sports memorabilia all to help fremont police officer todd young. young was shot and wounded while serving a search warrant in oakland. >> still in serious condition. still improving. he still has a long road ahead of him. >> young remains at oakland's highland hospital where he'll undergo several more surgeries this week. authorities said if they hadn't rushed young to highland so quickly, he may have bled to

death. and so the blood drives for todd young continue. this is young's alma mater, santa clara high school. several more are planned throughout the bay area which is why those here wanted to help in a different way. >> we're just trying to raise money, 100% of everything that we make is going to him and his family. >> officer young was shot friday but by sunday just two days later, the owner of this bar who was also a redwood city dispatcher started organizing this event. >> starbucks, local wine distributors and athletes donated thousands of dollars worth of items for free because they all know the money will be needed. >> from what i've been told, it's not looking good so he may have to change his entire lifestyle. the way he drives, his house. he may have to do things if he's in a wheelchair. >> tony morale list worked with officer young for two years. >> he's a fun guy. he can make it back, i'm sure

mentally he'll rebound as well. >> meantime barrientos, the man accused of shooting young, is awaiting extradition from mexico. >> it's 5:06. muni operators are trying to stop plans to restore service cuts that are scheduled to return this weekend. the board of supervisors voted to restore more than half of the 10% cuts plus the transport workers union say muni did not properly meet with drivers about scheduling changes that include bringing back more late-night runs. muni approved an injunction to stop it this weekend. muni and the city attorney are working on filing a legal response to block the request. republican gubernatorial candidate meg whitman will find out if she has to take off the campaign trail. she reports to the courthouse in redwood city for possible jury duty. if she is chosen for a jury, she

prefer service cuts or fare increases starting next year. in june caltrain officials approved a budget with a shortfall. that will be with service reduction, fare increases or both. so far rider feedback has indicated a preference for fare increases over service cuts. private sector employment in august fell for the first time in seven months. 10,000 private sector jobs were lost last month. most economists predicted a gain of 15,000. in san francisco a new report from the labor of statistics found 260,000 temporary worker jobs were added in the u.s. over the past year. the report says temps are an important indicator of the overall job market. >> the changes in temp employment perceive changes in the broader job market. in other words, when temps begin to add or lose jobs, the overall job market in the past has

poor air quality in the east bay, also the santa clara valley and not so bad in the south bay and the north bay. so another hot day today inland. not as warm at the coast and a cooling trend getting underway a little today, mainly over the weekend. two tropical storm, fiona and gascon are weakening. not a threat to land but you heard about hurricane earl, 145 mph winds that strengthened overnight, tracking to the storm to the north and east and it will weaken but we have hurricane warnings in effect from the outer banks of north carolina and tropical storm force winds will be expected through long island and cape cod. we're looking at this to hug the coast of the eastern seaboard by tonight. you can see the gail force winds here off virginia and we will be looking at some very strong winds, a couple inches of rain throughout new york city. temperatures today then a little cooler downtown. we're out of the 80s. 78 san francisco. look for 85 in oakland.

hercules. this ties up the entire east bay here but they believe that it was a relationship gone bad that kicked off the chain of events. that could explain two of the killings. the other two, they really don't know. let's start by taking a look at a picture of the suspect. this is 38-year-old efren valdamro. he was killed in richmond on tuesday night after a high-speed chase that went across four counties. she was found strangled in his car. he kidnapped her early in the day. we've gotta go back to saturday in hercules to a house owned by tran where valdamro lived on and off. they found the body of 73 ricardo and his son frederick missing then, still missing now. some say valdamro suspected one of them was dating tran and that's why they fought. >> whether that's actually founded or not, it did not appear in our investigation but

that did seem to be the issue. >> being an acquaintance, it does not bode well for having a long life. >> today hercules police are going to continue their search for frederick salas but hope is definitely running out that they're going to be finding him alive. they're looking in places where a body might be stashed. according to the tran family, valdamro had been dumped by transom time ago. he wanted to keep the relationship going, she wanted to get back with the father of they are three children. now, again, two other bodies found in vallejo, explosives found there, too. eric has that part of the story. terry mcsweeney, abc 7 news. >> terry, thank you. the other two victims terry mentioned in vallejo will be autopsied in hopes of determining a specific cause of death. the victims are friends, a 63-year-old and a 60-year-old. neighbors say for the past decade valdamro lived off and on

at the home where the two were found. that home was owned by allen and her husband 72-year-old charles rittenhouse. they're not sure what the relationship with the homeowners was but say police visited the home on several occasions and had reports that he fought with them, stole money and disturbed the neighborhood. risenhouse lived in the home after reporting his wife missing on sunday. >> what i can say is that when he was confronted, we believe he may have been involved. he did not react in the way we feel a normal person would react. >> rittenhouse was arrested yesterday morning and is being held at the solano county jail for explosive material including c-4 and dynamite. investigators are still trying to determine whether he played a role in the deaths of the two women. a group of republican lawmakers is asking governor schwarzenegger to appeal a federal ruling that struck down proposition 8. 27 members of the assembly's

republican caucus have sent him a letter saying it's up to the governor to defend the right of voters who passed the ban on same sex marriage. a federal judge in san francisco overturned the measure as unconstitutional last month. the state has until september 11th to challenge the ruling but schwarzenegger and brown say the judge's ruling should be implemented right away. later this morning the state public utilities commission is set to release the results of a long-awaited investigation into pg&e's controversial smart meters. many consumers complain their utility bills shot way up after smart meters were installed. the puc retained a firm to test the meters and has been looking into the device for the past five months. a consumer group said no matter the result, there should be a moratorium on smart meters because of the continuing doubts about the new technology. >> when you have thousands of consumers saying wait a minute, i don't like it, i don't trust it and i'm not benefiting from

welcome back. a new report finds bart's planned airport connector would cost dramatically more than originally projected a decade ago. the examiner reports the project would cost $484 million and serve only 4300 passengers a year. originally it was projected to cost $130 million and transport 13,000 passengers a year. the report was researched by an oregon-based transportation firm hired by translink which has strongly opposed the project from the coliseum station to the oakland international airport. it would replace the airbart buses. the directors reaffirmed their commitment to the project. some law enforcement experts are questioning the use of a taser on a 64-year-old marin county man who has a heart condition. this video from a camera mounted on the devise of peter mcfarlane as he's confronted by sheriffs

deputies and inside his home. they want to take him to the hospital because they think he could be suicidal. when he ignores their orders and says he's going to bed, the deputies and taz him three times. don cameron trains on the proper use of force. >> the officers should have tried hand techniques and if those were unsuccessesful and he started to pull away, then, yes, use the taser. but why go to the taser right away. >> mcfarlane is suing marin county. it takes charges of excessive force seriously but it's confident the deputies and will be vindicated when the facts are considered. moratorium on the use of composite bats. it is similar to the one of the national federation of baseball associations. a pitcher from marin county suffered injuries after being hit by a line drive off a

program. it goes directly to immigration authorities. san francisco has an ordinance which prohibits city workers from assisting immigration officials unless a felony charge is involved. the san francisco examiner reports that hennessey sent a letter to federal authorities asking to opt out of the program. some supervisors in santa clara county saying it should also opt out of the fingerprinting program. a new study says 23% of the nation's illegal immigrants live in california. a research center report estimates that 2.5 million immigrants lived in california in 2009. that's 7% of the state's population. however, the report says the number of undocumented residents actually dropped by 4% from 2008. overall the number of illegal immigrants in the u.s. in 2009 went down for the first time in 20 years. two men arrested as possible terror suspects are free this

morning. the men from yemen were aest ared monday after u.s. security officials became suspicious of their actions. there were concern they might be conducting a dry run for an airline attack. the luggage of one man included a cellphone taped to a bottle of pepto-bismol plus a knife and boxcutter. investigators now say there is no evidence linking them to a terror plot. the yemen embassy says the arrest highlighted ongoing misunderstanding of yemen and its citizens. residents are bracing for hurricane earl. social security checks have been mailed out early. the storm is expected to reach the north carolina coast later today. that's where emily is tracking the latest conditions. >> this is the eye of hurricane earl, an area of calm in the midst of a monster category 4 storm. it's threatening more of the east coast than any hurricane in 20 years. >> he's on the way. >> and that means people are on

their way out. >> they're gonna make us sit in this traffic. >> likely to overwash and be closed for several days. >> mandatory evacuations are spreading across north carolina. long lines of late summer tourists leaving with unexpected vacation memories. >> looking forward to a nice vacation and now our vacation's. earl-induced work is just beginning. boats pulled out of the water to safety. >> hurricane up the coast, we try to be prudent and make sure the boat doesn't get damaged. >> you never know what flying debris you're gonna get. >> we could see watches and warnings continue to move up the east coast. >> fema is already directing food and water north to cape cod hopping to get ahead of a storm that so far shows no signs of retreat. overnight president obama signed a disaster declaration for north carolina. officials know they only have a few more hours to get in place

this evening as the nights are longer. 50 half moon bay and we'll see that onshore flow return at the coast today. but since yesterday we are warmer cooling through the delta, a few degrees cooler. we are looking at another very warm day today, spare the air in our east bay valleys with poor air quality. the santa clara valley. so keep that in mind as you head out to exercise or walk the dog. not as warm today at the coast but some cooling there. but we're gonna have to wait another couple of days until we get the cooling inland. a real quick update here with things heating up in the tropics although tropical storm gascon and fiona continues to strengthen overnight and earl traveling up the seaboard up to 90 miles up from the center of the storm. so we'll be looking at some high seas and, in fact, the storm surge anywhere from 3 to 4 feet

along the coast of long island and even massachusetts today. so they're getting ready for that with some very high waves and some pretty good winds. 95 campbell, 90 redwood city today, pacifica a comfortable 70 degrees. 78 downtown south city checking in at 80 at about 3:00 today. 94 sonoma, 91 napa. maybe a couple degrees cooler in the north bay but warm in oakland, 85 for you inland valleys. 97 pleasanton and by the monterey bay, a comfortable 75 so cooling at our coast. gradual cooling throughout the rest of the work week and then by the weekend we are cooler than normal. that includes our holiday labor day. megan's got an update on an east bay crash. good morning. >> good morning. we are following this injury crash in concord. it's westbound highway 4 at willow pass. right now the past lane is blocked and emergency crews are on the scene. elsewhere as lisa said it's a spare the air day and you're encouraged to take mass transit.
