>> alan: both b.a.r.t. and oakland police departments are promising thorough investigations after five of their officers opened fire on a man who they say rushed at them with a knife in each hand. john alston is at the police department with more tonight. >> reporter: oakland pd is taking the lead in this investigation after three of its officers and two b.a.r.t. officers opened fire. they're not the only ones asking questions. the saturday morning shooting in oakland will come under the scrutiny of the b.a.r.t. police review committee. >> from what i see they have acted properly. we do know we have also some community people that have observed it, and i think everybody is proper it seems.

>> reporter: officers shot and killed a man on 33rd avenue near east 16th street. >> see these cops and right after that i heard it. >> reporter: it started when the police got a 9-1-1 call that a man was carrying two knives. the b.a.r.t. police got there and they say the man bolted down the international boulevard. at 34-avenue the oakland officers tased him but he kept running. >> i saw this man walking backwards like this, saying, shoot me, shoot me, shoot me. and the police were out of here, none of the police say anything. they were just gathered together. >> reporter: the oakland pd trade the tasary second time but say the man charged at them with the knives. >> other officers on scene who were there to protect the officer with the taser, discharged their firearms, striking the instruct who fell

to the ground ground. >> reporter: this two days after a commission started. the new shooting investigation will have to play out. >> my desire would be we dent have to taser everyone. but everybody has to protect themselves. so, with that, that's all i can say. i want to make sure we look at the investigation and see the facts before i make such a statement. >> reporter: so, no final conclusions in -- and that investigation could take weeks. the civilian panel won't go into effect until january but this is the kind of investigation they're designed to investigate. >> alan: the fruitvale community has scheduled other community meeting for thursday at 6:30 p.m. at st. elizabeth elementary school in the cafeteria. >> the cap over the leaking oil

well in the gulf of mexico is still holding. engineers say it's showing no signs of leak and will monitor it for the next 24. hour their trying to understand puzzling pressure readings. >> reporter: there was no announcement no celebration. no here ray heard route the gulf. the 48 hour window on testing the well cap ended after been cautiously declared it not a failure. >> there's no evidence that we lack integrity in the well. >> reporter: the pressure, measured was low are than expected. some feared a leak in the well, but after testing and finding none, it's theorized that the pressure inside the well dropped considerably. >> the worst is over. the well is 100% closed in now. >> reporter: meeting with local fish issueman, the for said the oil may be stopped but this is far from over. >> this is only done for us when

berkeley. mouth found a wounded man slumped over the steering wheel of his car. they tried to revive the man for 15 minutes before pronouncing him dead at the scene. ticket detectives say he was shot two years ago over a, quote, perception of disrespect. a two-year-old girl is in the hospital after a car struck her and her father in danville this afternoon. it happened around 2:30 near danville boulevard. the highway patrol says the girl was riding in a trailer that was being pulled by her father's bicycle. paramedics rushed the girl to children's hospital in oakland where her condition is still unknown. america's new is national park opened today in concord. the port chicago naval magazine national memorial park.

commemorates an explosion that took place 66 years ago today. the blast killed 320 sailors, most of. the african-american. after that tragedy, 50 sailors were tried for refusing to work in what they considered an unsafe environment. future supreme court justice thurgood marshall represented them in court but the men were convicted of mutiny. they were given clemens say after serving two years in prison but never exonerated. >> a piece of art hanging in a lie library is creating a controversy. the work is called, more values. it shows a picture of a bible with a label reading, warning, may impair judgment. one local ground says it's antireligious and they wanted removed. >> the government can't do anything to overtly support religion. we all heard that a lot. but it also means that the government can't support things that are openly hostile to

religion. >> alan: the art sold yesterday for $500, but it's scheduled to remain on display until december. a judge allowed a controversial roundup to resume and 250 wild horses were removed from a nevada range. horse advocates tried to amount the -- halt the roundup after several horses died. but the bureau argued 500 horses could die because they were already starving and dieing in the brutal summer temperatures. the agency is in the process of removing 12,000 horses to bring their numbers down to what it considers an appropriate management level. east oakland hasn't had a national grocery outlet in more than 20 years. but that's about to change. kroger, the country's largees grocery retailer, is building two stores, one at 66th

>> alan: mexico's bloody drug wore has taken on a new dimension with the first car bombing launched by a drug cartel. three people died when the bomb went off. investigators say a street gang lured police to the scene by dressing a bound and wounded man in a police uniform and then calling in a report of an officer shot. once help arrived, the bomb went off. the dead include a doctor who rushed to the scene to help. a wildfire threatened former president reagan's ranch this afternoon. it broke out a quarter mile from his west coast white house. neighbors reacted quickly and put it out before it scorches ten acres. >> got the hose and started trying to do what we could do, and so it was scary. >> alan: heavy smoke billowed over the reagan ranch is which an historical center. investigators are still trying to figure out what started the

fire. nobody was hurt and the flames never threatened any structures. that fire burned while the rest of southern california baked. some people still got their morning workouts in before the temperatures reached triple digits north and east of los angeles. forecasters expect the rare high humid heat wave to last until monday. southern california edison blames the heat wave for knocking out power to 3700 homes today. president obama accused republicans of jeopardy daysing the economic recovery for their own political purposes. this comes after the g.o.p. started a web site that chronicles mr. obama's recreational activities under the heading of, play golf or save the gulf. the criticism focuses on pleasure trips by the president while unemployment remains high. oil washes ashore of the gulf of mexico and america fights two wars. the president fired back at senate republicans during his
