we had our own short chase overnight, ending with a car crashed into a garage. elizabeth: good morning everyone and welcome back it's monday, october 26. i'm elizabeth klinge. eric: i'm eric hanson. metinka: if you like yesterday, you are going to love today. grab a jacket if you are getting an early start. temperatures in the 30's and 40's across the state. holding at 46 in des moines. a few clouds will work into the area later today that it is going to be comfortable, with highs in the low to mid 60's. tomorrow it will be significantly more cold. showers and thunderstorms in your tuesday forecast. eric: breaking news overnight, a chase ends with a car crashing into a garage. it all came to an end at 2nd and

ovid in des moines, just north of north high school. it all started unfolding around 10:00 last night. police say the driver of the stolen car hit a utility pole before going right through the garage hitting another car inside. two people had to be taken to the hospital because of the crash. we don't know how they're doing this morning. after a foot chase, the driver is now in police custody. neal clearly heard it all, as it crashed into his yard. >> i was awake, i was up, no problem, what's this? it was more shocking to see someone run and to see a policeman chase. the yard is a mess, there's bottles, there's all sort of stuff from that garage, nails all over my backyard, i'm not going anywhere tomorrow. eric: the crash knocked out power around the home. mid-american is still working to restore the power. elizabeth: our other big story this morning -- one teenager is in serious condition this morning after he and a friend were shot by a complete stranger. it all started with a fight at an ankeny mcdonald's.

when police arrived at. saturday night, they say they encountered two men with gunshot wounds. justin phongsavanh and nickolas culver, both 18-years-old. police say the shooting stemmed from an argument in the restaurant. >> it kind of makes me feel kind of unsafe that shootings happen right here in my neighborhood. elizabeth: the suspect, 36-year-old gabriel coco, turned himself in 30 minutes after the shooting. he's been charged with two counts of willful injury. the investigation is still ongoing. eric: a developing story overnight. a whale watching boat sinks off the canadian coast. shaina humphries is following this for us. what happened here, shaina? shaina: canadian authorities are confirming that 5 people are dead, after the boat sank off of canada's west coast. 27 people were on the boat went it went down, and one person is still missing this morning. the vessel made a mayday call late sunday afternoon on what was a clear and sunny day. this happened near the tourist community of tofino, a popular destination for whale watchers near british columbia. back here in the us, there are new charges against the driver accused of plowing into a crowd of people at oklahoma state

university's homecoming parade. 25-year-old adacia chambers is expected to appear in court today. she's facing four counts of second-degree murder. three adults and a 2-year-old boy died in saturday's crash. nearly 50 other people were injured. police suspect that chambers was driving under the influence, but her attorney says she has a mental illness. and the strike is a verdict, at least for now. -- averted, at least for now. the united auto workers union and gm have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract. the new contract effects about 53,000 employees. the uaw had set a deadline of midnight, to either reach a new agreement or walk off the job. the uaw says local union leaders will meet in detroit on wednesday to vote on the agreement. if they approve it, union members will then vote. elizabeth: the time is now 6:04, and let's check in with metinka. metinka: right now, starting off with cool temperatures, clear

46 degrees in des moines, 37 in ames and 39 in creston. it will be a few degrees warmer today, kind of like sunday with highs in the mid-60's. you will notice an increase in clouds but no rain in your monday forecast. eric: it was a very busy weekend full of politics in iowa. hillary clinton, bernie sanders and martin o'malley all rallied democrats at the jefferson jackson dinner saturday. each candidate made their case to the party faithful. clinton talked about building on obama's progress. sanders thinks he has a good shot at winning iowa. and o'malley is hoping for similar results. ms. clinton: i don't think president obama gets the credit he deserves for rescuing our economy from falling into a great depression.

mr. sanders: we were about 3% in the polls, we had no money, we had no political organization. well, in the last six months, things have changed. mr. o'malley: i've learned how to be a very effective leader. i've learned how to get things done. i'm clear about my principles . i know where i stand. eric: o'malley is hoping to build momentum. he's still in the single digits in the latest quinnipiac poll with 4% support from iowans . clinton leads sanders 51 to 40%. elizabeth: vice president joe biden is also speaking out for the first time since he decided against running for the white house. biden told "60 minutes" he worried about dealing with his son's recent death while on the campaign trail. mr. biden: what i struggled with was whether or not we could emotional, i could emotional handle this in away that i thought of bo it wasn't a

problem. elizabeth: the vice president also said he would not have gotten into the race just to stop democratic front-runner hillary clinton. eric: on the republican side donald trump is reacting this , weekend to ben carson's surge in the polls. the des moines register poll shows 28% support for the retired neurosurgeon. and later this morning, we are going to go live to washington where nikole killion will tell us about a brand new gop poll. plus, new jersey governor chris christie is coming under-fire after appearing on the sunday shows but it's for something he did, not for something he said. elizabeth: we'll be watching today as jeb bush evaluates his campaign at a texas summit after cutting back on staff. former presidents george w bush and george h.w. bush are part of that summit. on friday, bush announced he was downsizing his headquarters by 50% and cutting back on payroll and travel amid sagging poll numbers. eric: this morning, fred hoiberg is reacting to the loss of a friend and former coach. elizabeth: still ahead, hear

and 40's. by noon time, it will be comfortable. plenty of sunshine followed by clouds on the increase this afternoon, but still temperatures will be comfortable . a little bit above average. have a light breeze from the south at seven. today is going to be the warmest day of the next eight and temperatures are trending downward. tomorrow is going to be significantly cooler than tomorrow, -- tomorrow is going to be significantly cooler than today, and into the weekend temps they can to climb slowly back into the 60's. elizabeth: halloween is less than a week away. hard to believe. and if you're still looking for ways to get into the spooky spirit you're in luck. eric: kcci's alyx sacks joins us from the sleepy hollow's haunted

scream park with a frightening inside look. what are you finding, yx? alyx: it is the largest halloween theme park in iowa, and one of the largest in the midwest. this is the freak show, one of their scariest attractions. we have nathaniel james with us this morning. he say this is for sure going to get you scared. tell us about the snow attraction. >> this is kind of a behind-the-scenes of a traveling carnival. we really wanted to bring out the areas you do not normally see. the rest of the attraction is behind that area. the really creepy part of it. alyx: on the scary scale, what is this, like an 11? >> this is pretty high up there. people do not like clowns.

alyx: what is it about this week leading up to halloween? people want to have fun, get scared and get ready of the night of the living dead. >> the closer we get to halloween, the more people want to be scared. everybody comes out screaming, running, and sometimes crying. alyx: and laughing. there are nine attractions, three are neo, but you guys are constantly adding. what do you have for the kids? >> the kids love being scared as much as the adult but we have some tamer attractions. a pumpkin attraction which has almost 500 pumpkins. we have a 3-d gallery. some very low-key, tama,e

alyx: one of the new attractions, black off the zombie paintball. eric: shaina is back with some good news about gas prices, shaina? shaina: the average price of gas has dropped 10 cents over the past two weeks. industry experts say prices have fallen 63 cents in the past 19 weeks. the price slide could end though, if crude costs stay close to what they currently are. across the us, the highest average price of regular gasoline is $2.87 per gallon in los angeles. the lowest is $1.85 in charleston, south carolina. a lot of nba fans apparently still want to be like mike. check out the line at nike's new michael jordan store in chicago, when it opened up over the weekend. the chicago sun-times reports some people waited in line for nearly seven hours. the store contains several levels with products dedicated to nike's jordan brand. it also pays homage to his six nba championship titles with the chicago bulls. elizabeth: the chicago bulls current head coach, fred hoiberg

is reacting to the death of a friend and former coach. eric: flip saunders, the minnesota timberwolves coach, president, and part owner, died sunday at the age of 60. the veteran coach was being treated for hodgkin lymphoma. just a few months ago he said doctors considered it very treatable and it was even curable. as a result, the news shocked many. the former iowa state coach played for saunders. >> he played a huge part in my life, everything from giving me a chance. he was a great mentor, leader, and a special person. that is the thing. if you ride home on a plane, win or lose, it was always talking until you come back and sitting down to see how you are feeling. there is not one person i think you could talk to like that.

eric: saunders coached for 35 years, most notably with the pistons and minnesota timberwolves. he had more than 1000 victories. elizabeth: good news for hawkeye fans. they are officially a top-ten team. the hawkeyes moved up two spotrs, from 12 to 10. it's iowa's first top 10 ranking since 2010, when they were ranked ninth. ohio state remains number one . baylor remains number two after beating iowa state on saturday 45-27. eric: we'll see if wall street can keep the gains going today. strong quarterly earnings from tech companies like microsoft and amazon pushed stocks higher friday. the dow gained 157 points. the nasdaq added 111. the new sign-up season for coverage under the affordable care act begins november first and consumers can start browsing on healthcare.gov this week. the upgraded website features a new calculator that estimates total costs based on expected medical needs. premiums are expected to go up in 2016. and the tax penalty for people

metinka: it was a beautiful weekend. today is going to be another beauty. we are starting off meeting the jackets. it is down to -- downright chilly. 36 in fort dodge, mid and lower 40's across the southern half of the state, that waking up to clear skies. up to the north, if you are traveling toward minneapolis, the rain is moving out of that area, heading towards green bay. more showers south dakota into nebraska. there is some tropical moisture to the south of st. louis that could affect our forecast for tomorrow. the system will stay up to the north, keeping the rain away for now but some of the remnants from patricia will be inching their way toward iowa. eastern iowa tomorrow could be facing some chances of showers and thundershowers tomorrow

afternoon. we will be left behind with quite a bit of wind and cooler temperatures for the rest of the week. rather jackets, it is 46. southeast wind at seven miles per hour. headed for a gorgeous afternoon, high of 67 degrees. the southeast breeze may increase just a little bit. tomorrow, we are going to need the enbrel a. it is going -- need the umbrella. it is going to be a cold rain. temperatures stay on the cool side all the way through the end of the week and into the weekend. do not let that rain chance on saturday and sunday where you too much. they look -- worry you too much. they look to be hit and miss.

live in washington with the latest from the trail. and nikole, there's quite a shakeup in the polls? nikole: the latest polls show donald trump and ben carson neck and neck in iowa, prompting both candidates to step up their rhetoric. right now donald trump is speaking at an event in new hampshire, speaking out a bit -- about that poll and others. he saw a new cbs news poll that has him tied at 27% with ben carson. this comes after a pair of polls last week found him trailing ben carson in the hawkeye state. trump questioned him over his religious beliefs. >> ben carson is a very-low energy person. actually, i think ben carson is lower energy than jeb, if you want to know the truth.

critics in terms of energy i'm not sure that there's anybody else running who's spent 18 or 20 hours intently operating on somebody. nikole: over on the democratic side hillary clinton and bernie sanders traded barbs at an iowa dinner. today is clinton's birthday. she's 68 and celebrated last night with a big bash in new york with musicians demi lovato and john legend. of course that is on top of katy perry in iowa this weekend. eric: back to the republicans new jersey governor chris christie is coming under-fire after appearing on the sunday shows over the weekend but it's , not for something he said but rather something he did. what happened? nikole: he was taking the train from d.c. to new jersey and he stepped into the quiet car, which you can probably figure out you need to be quiet. the new jersey governor was not so quiet, talking loudly in the car.

stolen car hit a utility pole before crashing into the garage. the driver then led police on a foot chase. the crash knocked out power in the neighborhood. eric: more big stories this morning, one teenager is in serious condition after being shot at an ankeny mcdonalds. >> i pulled up and i saw a kid getting bandaged sitting on the curb over on the end of the parking lot. i had to go see what was going on. eric: 18-year-olds justin phongsavanh and nickolas culver were found with gunshot wounds just after 10:00 saturday night. police say the shooting stemmed from an argument regarding poor behavior inside the restaurant. 36-year-old gabriel coco turned himself into polk county authorities and is charged with two counts of willful injury. culver has been released from the hospital. the investigating is ongoing. elizabeth: hundreds of people showed their support for an 11-year-old in eastern iowa. chase aeschliman of west union suffered a stroke from a football injury in august.

at a packed event, people wore matching purple shirts reading " hash tag team chase and we don't know how strong we are until being strong is our only choice. the fayette county sheriff's office put on a benefit lunch in his honor. after surgery and two and half months of therapy, he's slowly getting better. >> when this happened, you know, he's family, and the sheriff called us in and said we're going to do something for the family. we put together this benefit and called a meeting. >> since he's a young 11-year-old the brain does do magical things. elizabeth: chase will undergo another surgery soon. a family friend has set up a donation page for those who want to help chase. you can visit you-caring.com. shaina: right now, 5 people are

in kabul, new delhi, and islamabad. 5 people are dead and one person is missing, after a tour boat capsized. 27 people were on it, whale-watching off the coast of british columbia. canadian coast guard crews worked throughout the night searching for the missing. 21 passengers were rescued. the boat is equipped with life jackets but passengers are not required to wear them. investigators are working now to figure out why it capsized. and more than 120 people were injured in a ferry crash in hong kong. the high-speed boat was traveling from macau to hong kong when it slammed into an object floating in the water. authorities say the hydrofoil hit an unidentified object off a small island. it was carrying 163 passengers and 11 crew members. the ferry lost power after the collision, but is not in any danger of sinking. the woman accused of driving a car into a crowd of people at a homecoming parade, will make her first court appearance today. adacia chambers was arrested on suspicion of driving while under

leading up to halloween, because we all want to get into that spirit. something that will get you a little scared for halloween. what this new attraction is is the black ops zombie paintball. we have nathaniel james with us from sleepy hollow to talk about this. this is a really fun new attraction. >> we have wanted to do a paintball attraction for years. this year is kind of the first time that technology has been available to do it the way we want. alyx: tell us a little bit about the experience. >> you go out on the bus. we kick on the superbright ultraviolet lights. everything glows. paintballs glow in the black lights so they look like tracer rounds. you should and everything that moves and everything that does not.

alyx: so you do not get hit by the paintballs so even kids can come and have fun. >> yes. perfect for the younger kids who do not necessarily want to go through one of the dark haunted houses. alyx: sleepy hollow has the largest halloween theme park in iowa. what are some of the new attractions? >> we have our freak show attraction, behind the scenes of a circus. alyx: if people want to come out, when do you guys open? >> we are opened wednesday through saturday. the two halloween we open at 7:00 every night. -- up to halloween, we open at 7:00 every night. alyx: definitely worth coming and checking out. elizabeth: if you want to be

shaina: we are less than a week before halloween so lots of kids will be out trick-or-treating. eric: we have 3 helpful apps that you can use to follow along with your trick-or-treaters. the first is track n treat download the app on your kid's device, or send one along with them. you enter your email address or phone number to get access to their location. and find out where they are in the neighborhood. elizabeth: if you're an iphone famiy, apple has its own location-tracking app. it's called find my friends. just add family members from within the app, and once they approve it, their locations will show up on the map. you can even set up location-based alerts to find out when they've safely arrived at a neighbor's house. and finally for android users, check out life360 family tracker. its similar to find my friends. once everyone has the app you can create a group for the entire family. and try to keep everybody safe. eric: it is fun that you want to

make sure your kids are going where they are supposed to be going. shaina: somebody sounded really good in des moines over the weekend. take a look. she was the big talk of the weekend. katy perry was here. the pop star was in des moines , showing her support for hillary clinton. thousands flocked to downtown des moines to hear her roar, perry was on stage for about 15 minutes. she sang 4 songs including mega hits roar and firework. elizabeth: the singer took over hillary clinton's instagram account on saturday while campaigning with her. she posted this photo of a gold potus necklace with the caption my birthday gift to fellow scorpio, hillary says it all. she also posted a few other photos a selfie with clinton as , well as a picture of her manicured nails sporting

eric: following several developing stories, the latest on a late night chase, next in news to go. breaking overnight, a chase ends with a car crashing into a garage. it all came to an end at 2nd and ovid in des moines. this all unfolded around 10:00 last night. police say the driver of the stolen car hit a utility pole before going right through the garage hitting another car inside. two people were taken to the hospital but we haven't been told how they're doing this morning. after a foot chase, the driver is now in police custody. elizabeth: one teenager is in serious condition this morning after he and a friend were shot by a complete stranger. it all started with a fight at an ankeny mcdonald's. when police arrived at. saturday night, they say they encountered two men with gunshot wounds, justin phongsavanh and nickolas culver, both 18-years-old. the suspect, 36-year-old gabriel coco, turned himself in 30

counts of willful injury. shaina: at least 12 students at a girls school were killed in an earthquake in afghanistan. canadian authorities confirming that 5 people are dead, after the boat sank off of canada's west coast. 27 people were on the boat went it went down, and one person is still missing this morning. this happened near the tourist community of tofino, a popular destination for whale watchers near british columbia. back here in the us, there are new charges against the driver accused of plowing into a crowd of people at oklahoma state university's homecoming parade. 25-year-old adacia chambers is expected to appear in court today. she's facing four counts of second-degree murder. three adults and a 2-year-old boy died in saturday's crash. nearly 50 other people were injured. elizabeth: we'll be watching today as jeb bush evaluates his campaign at a texas summit after cutting back on staff. former presidents george w bush and george h.w. bush are part of the summit.
