tv   The O Reilly Factor  FOX News  December 15, 2011 8:00pm-9:00pm EST

8:00 pm
this thursday, december 15th, 2011. i'm shepard smith. thanks for having us into your place tonight. must watch on fox tonight, the debate is just an hour away. suffer through o'reilly. >> bill: "the o'reilly factor" is on. tonight. [shouting] >> what's wrong. >> mr. gingrich, we are here to protest your speech today. >> bill: occupy protesters are protesting the political process. they don't want free speech. they want. >> >> bill: wait a minute, did glenn beck just call newt gingrich a big government progressive? i believe he did. beck will be here. and the big republic debate begins in about an hour. we will take you out to iowa and one of the panelist, megyn kelly, will be give us a

preview. >> bill: caution, you are about to enter the no spin zone, the factor begins right now. captions by closed captioning services >> bill: hi, i'm bill o'reilly. thanks for watching us tonight. interrupting freedom. that is the subject of this evening's talking points memo. as we reported, the occupy wall street radicals are not interested in the free exchange of ideas. they are totalitarians. it's their way or the highway and that, of course, is dangerous. newt gingrich appeared at the university of iowa and so did occupiers. >> i want to start by drawing two distinctions. [chanting] >> what's wrong? >> mr. gingrich, we are here to protest your speech today. >> we object to your arrogant attitude poor people. we cannot forget your
8:02 pm
continued vilification of poor people >> bill: don't you love that one loon yells a line and all the other lem mings repeat it. isn't that good? unbelievable. now, mr. gingrich isn't alone. president obama, governor christie of new jersey, karl rove have all recently been shouted down by these idiots. you have heard one condemnation of that from the far left? just one? i haven't the point here is that radicals are dangerous. we said it before, these occupiers are going to hurt somebody. they are also being used as poy people by some in the democratic party. recently nancy pelosi praised some of the occupiers despite the problems. don't be surprised to seat loons in the presidential campaign disrupting the

process. professional anarchists, they are not going to stop. they have no respect for freedom or due process. no respect for property or opposing points of view. the next time somebody praises the occupy movement, think about that. and that's the memo, now for the top story tonight, the polling among republic contenders is getting down right bizarre. just yesterday newt gingrich had a big lead in iowa according to an insider advantage poll. but today, a rasmussen poll taken in iowa says mitt romney is leading newt gingrich 23% to 20%. ron paul 18%. rick perry 10%. so what is going on? joining us now from washington radio talk show star and fox news analyst laura ingraham. do you know? i mean what this is crazy stuff is? whiplash i have to get this out of the way. entrade, remember we were talking about entrade. >> bill: it's the betting people. >> entrade shows romney up at
8:04 pm
62%, 63% and gingrich has fall an little bit. i have -- as we say in connecticut i have wicked whiplash over this stuff. you can't figure it out except, bill, you and i talked about this a couple of weeks ago. as soon as newt gingrich started to rise in the polls, you and i both predicted that the attacks would start, right? because all these figures from establishment media, some conservative web sites, and magazines like national review would begin to try to take him down. i think that's what's happened. this has hurt him in a number of polls and taken its toll. tonight is going to be very important. >> bill: most important point is in all of the polls iowa caucus goers, 60 percent said they could change their mind. they weren't locked into anybody. that's what makes the iowa caucus interesting. now, ron paul, he could do very well in iowa. everyone knows republic party is not going to nominate ron paul for president. it's not going to happen. he could do a lot of damage along the way and he could hurt either gingrich or
8:05 pm
romney. is he not really a factor in new hampshire. new hampshire is not embracing ron paul. >> third in new hampshire in the new suffolk university poll. romney lost some ground. >> bill: huntsman is third. i don't expect ron paul to do that well in new hampshire. do i expect him to do well in iowa. >> the interesting thing for tonight, i think, is to see if newt gingrich substantively starts to take on ron paul because, when you look at where the numbers are, today and, again, you are right, it's very difficult to figure it out. romney has not really gained a lot as far as support. but gingrich has lost some. so, a lot of ron paul -- a lot of gingrich's supporters in this most recent poll seemed to have flocked to ron paul. he has been running. >> bill: if you were advising mitt romney, you would say listen, governor, not mitt romney. >> gingrich. >> bill: if you were advising newt gingrich, you would say listen, mr. speaker, have you got to convince the paul people to come back to you or to leave him and vote for you
8:06 pm
because he is much more of a threat to you than romney in those precincts, right? >> i would because that's where the momentum seems to be going right now. that can change. ron paul has run some really effective ads. he is speaking to a segment of the republic party that, you know, sees the war in iraq ending. we don't even have iraqi officials showing up at the closing ceremony at the base there they're like we have got to be very careful about these foreign military adventures. he has attract add lot of interest recently. a lot of it is college kids and a lot of them are going to be home for breaks. we will see how many show up at the iowa caucuses. that's where newt gingrich has to look to regain some of that momentum that he might have lost. >> bill: okay, now, paul's commercials in iowa, you said they were effective. what's he zeroing in on, foreign affairs? is that what he is really playing the card on? >> basically that newt gingrich isn't the person he is portraying himself to be. that he has ideas that are far more progressive. i think people like -- are
8:07 pm
going to say that negative ads. >> bill: glenn beck is coming up behind you. beck is buying into the paul profile of gingrich that is he a progressive guy. do you think is he a progressive guy. >> no. i think gingrich has had some really goofy ideas. do i think that he should have been called zany by mitt romney yesterday? i mean, is that's as tough as he is going to get. move to the middle, move to the right on welfare reform. birth blueprint contract with america. didn't get much of it through. nevertheless, is he responsible for much of what has happened in positive ways for the conservative movement. >> bill: i don't think is he a progressive, is he a free thinker. coming down on the liberal side once in a while. i appreciate you mentioning the name bill clinton because i'm going to make an announcement right now. the president is going to be
8:08 pm
on the factor on tuesday. first time ever and we're going to have an extensive conversation about what he would do if he were president today. differently than what's being done. that should be interesting. because he has got a new book out. he has got to put americans back to work and all of that cool. all right. i don't know if it's going to be cool. i just hope it isn't zany, laura. >> no mad cap from you, o'reilly. >> bill: merry christmas to you, laura. >> merry christmas. >> bill: the beck meister will be here. megyn kelly out in iowa prepping for the big debate tonight. we will check in with her and we are coming right back.

>> bill: our pal glenn beck has harsh words for newt gingrich the other day saying the former speaker is a big government progressive. wow. beck joins us now from his lavish new york city studios. he is, of course, the author of the big new best seller "being george washington." so, gingrich a progressive? really? >> yes. he says the best president, the most effective president of the 20th century, every conservative would say that's ronald reagan. he says it's fdr. 14 different times we have him on tape saying it and explaining because is he a progressive in the good times and he knows how to get things done in the bad times. he was on my program,

questioned him extensively about teddy roosevelt. he started the progressive party. he says when it comes to -- when it comes to foreign policy, is he positively will sownian, woodrow wilson. >> to you woodrow wilson that's not good. this is a bad move. >> bill: you know teddy roosevelt progressive party is a lot different than the progressive party of today,. >> no it's not, bill. it's the other side of barack obama. >> bill: no, no, no. >> yes, it is. >> bill: if you look at the other side of teddy roosevelt. >> i'm not going to argue with you about -- >> bill: we have a gentleman disagreement. i believe teddy roosevelt progressive vision far different than it was today. they can read and research about beck. i'm right about lincoln and you are right about washington. to you, the image that newt gingrich, has, among many as an ardent conservative, small

government guy, wants to get everybody out of our way, that's a phony image, that's not the real newt. >> that's not just me that's the national review coming out and saying that today too. he was thrown out of congress by conservatives. he is -- he has all of the baggage but he doesn't actually do any of it. he doesn't believe in it he believes, he said to me on my show that he believes, you know, he doesn't believe in picking winners and losers, but you know what? you have got to do what you have got to do. the government should get into ecostuff with the green movement. that's crazy, bill. it's crazy. >> bill: he never says this stuff to me. basically he puts himself out on the factor as someone who wants much smaller government, who would cut taxes, who would cut a lot of the regulations the obama administration has put in. >> he is a regulation guy. he voted for the department of education. he is not a small government guy.
8:14 pm
>> bill: beck. back then the department of education wasn't what it is now. >> okay. bill. if you don't have the foresight to see what happens. >> bill: the foresight? >> exactly right. it's the same beef i had with mitt romney. romney said to me look, glen, what i brought in was romney care. who do you think you are? king? of course it's going to mutate. that's what happens to government. that's what they do. they expand it. >> bill: if you were an iowa caucus goer and you had to cast a ballot, how would you vote for? >> it would be between rick santorum and michele bachmann in the end it would be michele bachmann because tough choice. >> bill: you are with the congresswoman. you are not with ron paul. >> no. >> bill: looks like paul has taken some of gingrich's support. because of the attacks -- i don't consider your critique on gingrich an attack. you are not attacking him personally. >> i know spheric gingrich. has always been very nice to
8:15 pm
me. >> bill: you just disagree with him. >> we had a conversation on radio. we have disagreements. i think he would be an awful president. >> bill: but that opinion, your opinion and the opinion of other conservatives who don't like him for a variety of reasons has taken its toll as you saw the rasmussen poll today has romney now leading with no gain. romney support stays the same it's just that gingrich has come down and paul round up. michele bachmann ran into trouble because of some misstatements of fact, her view on gays was pretty harsh. that they could be changed and all of that. she run into a lot of social problems because, as you remember, she had a lot of momentum after the first debate and when perry got in t all went away. do you think that the congresswoman has made any mistakes that should be corrected before the vote? >> who hasn't made mistakes? i think she -- you know, i can't judge her. i think she probably has. look, i know that michelle is not a -- is not somebody who is going to regulate how we

live our lives. you want to live your life anyway you want to live your life. get the government out of -- get the government out of our business. >> bill: they are all saying that. there is every single -- with the exception possibly of huntsman. >> and gingrich. >> bill: no. >> did you listen to my radio program? i know you listen. >> bill: he is saying now he is going to shrink government, cut taxes, go for a balanced -- >> -- he was on my radio show like two weeks ago. he believes in -- >> bill: ban government on radio show. >> he believes in big government. >> bill: that's your interpretation. he didn't say it. you are intrintding interpreting that, beck, come on, you know that. >> did you see the show? >> bill: did i not. >> he was on the radio show. >> bill: how could i see it if it was on the radio show. >> i said are you telling me that you are a teddy vose velt progressive and he said the
8:17 pm
things that teddy vose velt did when he first got into office, those things have to be done. he specifically talked about. >> bill: i agree with that i think those monopolies were crazy back then. is that getting through? >> i will tell you, yeah. because right here is the candidate that knows -- is the embodiment of george washington, goodness, honesty and let me tell you something else. right here, this is the guy that could beat barack obama in the next election. right here. he is great at debates. is he clean, he has never taken any money. is he not doing anything with solyndra. >> bill: small government. >> pro-life. >> bill: if i can read expression are you paying that baby. >> no. is he wearing the blue tie and everything. i'm going to start calling him mr. president right here. this is the next george washington. baby george for president.

8:21 pm
>> bill: factor follow up segment tonight, immigration both legal and illegal. new haven connecticut the mayor wants to give illegal aliens the right to vote if you can believe it here in new york city there are an estimated half million illegal residents causing all kinds of drama. here now new york city mayor michael bloomberg and rick schultz from the american enterprise institute. they are working on solutions to the immigration problem. new york city has a reputation and it may not be founded,
8:22 pm
being a sanctuary city for illegal aliens. >> it's an entry city. people from around the world want to come here. we have record population 8.4 million highest the -- biggest the city has ever been. this year we will have 50 million tourists come to new york city. a place people want to come. >> bill: with a half million illegal aliens you are not doing what arizona does or alabama does or other states where they are cracking down and saying look, we don't really want these people here, you are not doing that in new york city. >> part of the economy, everybody that's here undocumented should find a way to get documented. this country should be in control of its borders. this country should not be undocumented but it should be open to people around the world. without that we are not going to stay a super power, bill. >> bill: what do you say to people who say mr. mayor these people cheated. there is an immigration process they went around it. they broke our laws. you are rewarding them by allowing them to stay and take
8:23 pm
part in new york city's infrastructure which costs money. >> think how we got here 1986 we had big immigration reform and congress did what congress always does. they talk tough. >> bill: and did nothing. >> and did nothing. they pass laws but then they don't fund it so that you can enforce the laws so yes the 11 million is down to 10 now. they have gone home. almost nobody coming across the mexican border. it indicate people here illegally most of them oversay visas. they don't run through the desert. >> bill: doesn't matter how they get here. >> in fact, what's happened here is these people are part of our economy. you can't pick the crops without migrant workers who work -- take jobs others won't. >> bill: we are look for solutions too. i don't think bad behavior should be rewarded like giving them the vote in new haven. you wouldn't want to give them the vote. >> i feel strongly only citizens should vote.
8:24 pm
>> bill: now the solution, mr. schultz, seems to be to expand legal immigration. is that what you and the mayor are working on? do you want to expand legal immigration? >> yeah. that's right, bill. look, we have got christmas is right around the corner. the biggest christmas gift we could give the american economy is to open our doors to skilled immigrants from around the world they want to come here and learn and start businesses and hire americans. >> bill: how do you know they are skilled? is there a litmus test that you would impose. >> not a litmus test you would impose. going to good schools in home country or a lot of them coming here. going to best universities and colleges. the way our system is now, we are educating these folks here at great schools and then sending them back home and not letting them stay in the country. >> bill: need more skilled labor with unemployment rate at 9%. why do we need to import people to make it tougher to get a job. >> because we have looked at this. ai has a new study out that's looked at this.
8:25 pm
skilled immigrants net job creators in a big way. >> bill: you say they are entrepreneurial, they are going to start up businesses and hire americans, right? >> absolutely. that's part of it. >> bill: your study backs that up. >> absolutely. >> we have done similar studies. nic couldn't be right. every person that has a graduate degree in science and engineering that is here they generate 2.5 jobs for americans. if you want to have more jobs, we need more immigrants. it's plain and simple. >> bill: all right. i got into trouble a couple of years ago when there was a big fire in the bronx that killed a bunch of illegal aliens because they were living in a flop house like 30 of them. and the city knew that there was all kinds of violations in the flop house. but the city didn't do anything about it and didn't report the situation to ice and i said these people would be alive today if the city of new york had done its job and regulated this. that was a harsh assessment on my part but i believe it we are not doing the illegal
8:26 pm
immigrants a favor by looking the other way and letting them live in undergrowng ground situation but you disagree with me. >> number one, i don't know the situation that you are talking about. >> bill: you remember that big big fire. >> yeah there was a big fire. >> bill: a lot of people. >> a lot of people undergo tragedies all the time and how you link that. >> bill: people jammed into apartments. >> there are plenty of american citizens jammed into small apartments as well. >> bill: bill pick one. >> only because you want to make a difference. human life is human life. code violations going in. if the person renting the apartment is illegal you can report that person to ice if you so choose. >> if they are violating the zoning laws, can you report them to the city government and we will do something about it as well. >> bill: you didn't in that case. >> maybe we didn't in that case. but the bottom line is that has little to do with the fact that we need jobs in this country desperately. the ways to get jobs is to have people with great skills who are entrepreneurs come to this country and create the jobs.
8:27 pm
and if you look at the statistics, if you look at the percentage of new businesses that are started by entrepreneurs, much higher than those started by non--by americans who have been here for many generations. >> bill: that's true. certain industries like electronics and things like that dominated. >> i will give you a good idea. i was asked on television what do you do for the big cities in this country that have been hollowed out. industry has left or just disappeared. i said here is what you do because we don't have a lot of money to fix the problem. if you go and say to people around the world if you have skills, you can come, we will give you a visa to live in that city. you agree not to take any federal, state or city moneys live in that city for seven years. you figure out how to make a living. we will give you full citizenship at the end of seven years. >> bill: if you are good citizen. >> don't break the laws and take any federal money. >> bill: i'm not opposed to it. >> those people would create jobs. >> bill: as long as it's legal, i think you guys have something that the brains around the world could absolutely help this country.
8:28 pm
look at me. i'm irish and my people came here and look at this brain right here, mr. mayor. you can see it? >> i can see it, bill. [ laughter ] >> bill: all right, gentlemen. thanks, happy holidays. plenty more as the factor moves along this evening. why are so many american teenagers smoke pot? culture warriors on the case. out to santa -- iowa. megyn kelly will be joining us. pleasure they generate electricih lets me surf the web all day. guinea pig: row...row. took me 6 months to train each one, 8 months to get the guinea pig: row...row. little chubby one to yell row! guinea pig: row...row. that's kind of strange. guinea pig: row...row. such a simple word... row. anncr: there's an easier way to save. get online. go to geico.com. get a quote. 15 minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance.

in >> bill: new study says one in 15 are smoking pot. gresham carlson, more are smoking pot than drinking alcohol according to this study. >> yeah. >> why? >> because as a society we do not take marijuana use seriously like we have with this generation alcohol and
8:32 pm
smoking cigarettes. what do i mean by that? we have many states pushing for the legalization of marijuana. we have many states that allow medical marijuana and most importantly, we do not teach our kids that smoking marijuana is dangerous or addictive. >> bill: all right so socially acceptable substance, marijuana, the kids got the message, but, you know, alcohol is legal, and you get buzzed drinking alcohol. you get buzzed smoking pot. but pot is now cool. >> pot is also legal, medical marijuana is now legal in 16 states. >> right. >> bill: what we see in this study a s. a correlation between the states where it's prevalent. >> bill: and the medical marijuana states. >> and the perceived risk of consuming it has also dropped. >> bill: who was first one to say that? >> could it have been bill o'reilly? >> bill: i just want to explain to everybody. here is the deal. here is what they do. the drug addicts taking oxycontin hard cores go to the marijuana clinics i got headaches, apprehensive.
