his image once beloved, a charismatic superstar. 1 of the most popular figures in america in the seventies. he used to run through the hertz counter area and the airport, in movies and and in norma's superstar. sent, that reputation forever changed by what would be called the trial of the century. the brutal murders of nicole simpson his former wife, and her friend who she came back with to her home that night. 's death bringing back memories of those he mercilessly slaughtered. according to the simple decision not the criminal decision. and of course the bronco chaise. he was supposed to turn himself in that day, and an unbelievable twist as he took off and the police chased him through the streets in a slow chaise for hours. 95 million americans watched

every moment. if you watched it, you remember exactly where you were when this was going on. then in steps the dream team. johnnie cochran and the defence team robert kardashian as well. this famous moment johnny cochran told the world if the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit. and the neighbour kalin who lived in the guest house at o'jays property marcia clark who tried to bring a guilty verdict for the state in this case as everybody watched it, grade much every day and every night when you got home in the evening in 1995. then, the buildup. when the verdict came in pack everything in america stopped as everybody watched to find out what would happen to oj. >> we the jury find the defendant not guilty of the

crime of murder in violation of penal code 187 a. >> look at the shop on robert kardashian's faced in that image. it's 1 of the most indelible images of all of this, and no 1 ever went to jail. for what happened to nicole simpson and ron goldman. o.j. simpson was later found guilty in a civil decision, and was supposed to be $33.5 million to the brown family. attorney lee otero covered the trial closely almost 30 years ago. he knew the family, a new oj. goes back and tells us what he knows about that time in a moment. first, a senior national correspondent takes us all back to the story that riveted the nation. hello william. >> it's an amazing rate? about all those iconic moments. he remember o.j. simpson

seemingly had at all. he has a wealth, the family and a smile that would light up movie and tv screens across the country. all of that came crashing down when he was accused of killing his ex-wife and as you said her friend. it's been 30 years since those murders happen, not far from where we are. simpson as a wanted man led the police on a car chase some people called it the most famous ride since paul revere. he eventually surrounded -- surrendered. it was doug's the trial of the century he was acquitted, a verdict many americans to this day disagree with. >> to the family of the beautiful nicole brown simpson may we always cherish her memories. she was a beacon of light that burned bright, may we never forget her. >> that was just moments ago. simpson would spend a good part of the next 30 years in

courtrooms or prison cells are in the civil trial he was found liable and the wrongful death of nicole simpson and ron goldman and ordered paid 30 million. the victims families have seen almost nunavut since his nfl pension was considered off-limits by a judge. police arrested him in 2009 in las vegas for his role in an armed robbery and kidnapping attempt to reclaim some sports memorabilia. he serves 9 years behind bars as parole in 2017. he lived his final years in las vegas where he would turn up at a casino, restaurant or golf course. he had that charisma right people treated him like a celebrity. he also shared his thoughts on twitter posting short videos. in the past 2 months he think some people who are concerned about his health and also use the opportunity to make a production on super bowl sunday. >> nfl. i see it 24 to 20 when for the 49ers f.

>> let's not hope i am basing that on the quality of the players on the football field. >> of course he was terribly wrong. but in the video, you know, martha even with his body riddled with cancer you can see the personality come through, love him or hate him you had to at least appreciate his ability to step through the screen, that the age of 76. back to you. >> martha: thank you very much william p. joining me now a civil rights attorney and fox news contributor lee otero who covered the o.j. simpson murder trial throughout. he knew simpson and his family. leo, you know, that video was not shot long ago, what went through your mind this morning? we were in our morning meeting when this news broke. you know, it differently stops you in your tracks and takes you back. what was your reaction? >> i was shocked. was preparing to do the falconer focus and all the sudden iphone

blew up because i got calls from all across the country about o.j. passing. it brought back all those memories articulated in the video segment you just played. i will tell you right now it was a time where everybody focused on the simpson trial 24/7 martha for that period of time it was the number 1 story. soap operas on regularly were cancelled because people saw a real soap opera in that courtroom. i will tell you right now there was -- or pluses and minuses. the worst thing is it divided the country by race. i will tell you right now o.j. simpson may have been acquitted in a court of law but he was found guilty in a court of public opinion as he relates to the death of nicole brown simpson and wrong goldman. >> martha: mike ai interviewed a goldman family over the years, when i look at that video of him talking about a football game, the only thing that goes through my mind is this and got to live

his life, you know, he was free. he went to prison for a while based on, you know, his attempt to get his souvenirs and his personal stuff back but, you know, you think about what was done. we will talk to dr michael auden on the scene about the vicious heinous nature of this crime. both individuals have their throats slashed. they were stabbed multiple times and no 1 ever spent a day in jail for their murderers. you know, 1 of the things that i really think was so potent about this process was it divided the nation unfortunately it became not just about whether or not he was guilty of the crime, it became about people getting to their corners about race, leo. >> you are 100% correct. la had just gone through the riots of the rodney king riots. there was this animosity and

distrust toward the police. and in that particular case, martha, the defence team pulled every angle they could to create reasonable doubt, 1 of the cards they played was you cannot trust the police. that was 1 of the cards along with numerous other strategies of attacking a prosecution case. the prosecution in my opinion put on a very weak case and that is why i thank the jury found an acquittal for simpson. liability case found liable for $33 million doesn't serve justice to the point of being acquitted. but i will say this, i knew the whole simpson family. his life was tortured after that verdict in 1 way or another because the life he lived before 1994, football celebrity and tv announcer, pitch man he lost it all. o.j. simpson had a lot of pride he lost that and i think his life was tortured over the next

30 years. >> martha: maybe there is some level of justice in that. when you look back what you think people don't really know or understand about what was going on behind the scenes leo? >> again when you look at his life prior to 1994, he did not have a close connection with the black community. the racecar came up and all of a sudden he gravitated and the strategy was that the black community rallied around him. i think that was to his advantage because when they tried to put on defence 1 of the most famous scenarios was when they visit the simpson home. they change the complexion of the house in order to give the jurors, they had minorities on it, that sen he had a relationship with the black community. >> martha: the prosecution objected when they brought the jury to the house because they had been in the house. they saw all these celebrity photos of o.j. with his white and black friends, all of his

life and what his life really looked like. they took those pictures all down and replace them with thanks they felt was going to make him or some pathetic to have black jury. it's an astonishing story -- and mostly black jury i should say, i'm trying to remember. >> it was not an all black jury but there were a large number of blocks on the jury. i will tell you right now again when you look at the totality of the case, you had the dream team. thank about it martha, you had the top expert michael auden dr henry lee, they had a power house and tells you 1 thing. juries of cases are not the same it depends how much money you have on 1 side versus the other. >> martha: so true. and they all dieied young deaths really. all of that dream team right they are all gone. robert kardashian, bailey, johnnie cochran all of them.

a heartbreaking turn in the effort to free some of the remaining hostages in gaza. hamas reportedly saying as part of these negotiations they may not have enough living captives to hold up there and of the cease-fire proposal. 7th attack or after when they were being held in captivity. joining me now are the parents of 1 of those being held. rachel goldberg and john. thank you so much, i don't know how you find the strength to talk about this as often as you do but i know it is because you want so much to have resolution and to have your son returned to you. when you hear this news, either 1 of you who have or would like to this about the difficulty hamas may have in meeting the number for this negotiation, what goes to your mind? what are you thinking? >> to be honest, there has been so much misinformation and dishonesty from the gecko from all sides that i don't know to trust that information. i don't know if that is more

gameplaying in this theatre that were all trapped in. i also think that when we are talking about what categories hamas and what the deal is encompassing, it is hard to figure out how many people would fit into that category. if hamas is saying they only want to release elderly, wounded women and children, maybe there aren't that many still alive tragically. but there are still many people still alive that don't fit into those categories. so it is hard to know what's truth and what's just fodder to create more anxiety and animosity and fear. >> marbach, rachel talks about

the hostages do not have time so in my mind it is simple. bring home the hostages and we will deal with all the other tensions afterward. that must be the priority. >> martha: rachel do you think there is a chance that becomes the clear message from the leadership in israel that the people are the priority and we need to have them back before we can make any concession whatsoever? >> well the information we are getting is that this most recent round of talks in cairo with the 4 that are available to have the conversations that there is a deal on the table right now that the united states, israel, qatar and egypt have all agreed is a solid deal. it's a hard deal for israel and it's going to cost a lot but israel has leaned in so i do think they are ready to do them. that deal is now waiting

squarely on the table of hamas. it is their turn to show the world do they truly care about their suffering people. because this is their chance to stop their people, these thousands and thousands and thousands of innocent civilians caught in gaza, they can stop that now if they agree to this deal. this is their chance to prove, you know, this is the ticket, the proof is in the pudding. are you going to take the ticket or not? >> i hope that hirsch can see and feel the courage that you both exhibit every single day on his behalf and on behalf of all these hostages who need to be the priority. we had over 30 americans killed and still several americans held hostage, some of whom we know were killed and some of whom we hope and pray are alive and

democratic presidential candidates across recent history rate, the lowest number ever was for jimmy carter, 83% black support. and joe biden is well below that measure according to these new numbers. how do you read this? >> first and foremost this is music to my ears as a conservative of almost 2 decades. i know for a fact i even wrote a book on it cult ticket for granted how conservatism can win back americans. it stick in the community for granted for over 50 years. we've not seen any established policy to adjust the many issues that impact black americans, talking about it in the state of illinois for example 67 or 68 of the schools in the state, not 1 single student can do math at a proficient level. 32 schools in illinois, not 1

student can read at proficient levels. you think about the crime that's taken over and any number of issues the democratic party had failed and continue to fail the black unity on. so i think this is a really good wake-up call for everybody. our will also tell you this martha if it wasn't for donald trump who i think has been culturally vary comfortable with the black unity for decades they've been his friends. all these folks he is not normally with. if he wasn't the guy i don't think we'd see these numbers no matter who the republican is. >> martha: i want to play for you a biting campaign video because obviously they are well aware he is a 57% with black men and as i said the most recent low as jimmy carter 83% here is part of their effort to win the voters back. watch... >> as bad as it was, black americans felt that the most.

it's an interesting legacy that he left behind. a forensic pathologist testified as a defence witness for o.j. watch this... >> he wasn't quite sure how he cut himself and noticed he had been bleeding but didn't know how it came about. >> martha: we are now joined by dr biden, gaddafi with those you've covered some of the cases with us over the years but this was the first time i think most people became familiar with you. you were with o.j. on the day of the bronco chase. tell us how you ended up there and what you remember about that day. >> yes. i was called around midnight by bob shapiro who was o.j.'s attorney to come to visit the scene of death and possibly do a reautopsy. the body was released before an

autopsy could be done but the medical examiner's office give us all the materials that they had found in the days before. we met o.j. simpson at kardashian's house where he was awaiting being worn for his arrest from the district attorney. bob, the attorney, shapiro asked us to examine o.j. to take whatever evidence we might need that might be useful in the forensic examination. we examine it, took various material from o.j.'s body and the 1 thing that was very apparent to me as a physician was how depressed he was and the first contact we had with the police we told him he had to be put on suicide watch immediately when he was taken into custody.

be put on suicide watch. the police came and minutes after we examine him, he disappeared. he suddenly left in the bronco. the police initially thought we were complicit in his disappearance. when we were finally released about 2 hours later, larry king got a hold of me and went over the bronco chase with him. there was very much concern that he might hurt himself, whether it was because he felt guilty or he was just sad and very upset at the death of his ex-wife. >> martha: yes, it was a stunning afternoon. we all remember thinking that he wanted to take his own life at that time based on what he was saying and what we could hear.
