1:10 pm
or it seems everybody drives, hey christina. x hi eric. it's interesting hundreds of thousands of people catch l.a. buses and trains every day. apparently in addition to the violence the homelessness crisis is also impacting writers. one bus driver describes l.a. public transit system as a homeless shelter on wheels. we went to awarded the video we are about to show is graphic. there are bus stops near downtown los angeles and full of trash, using needles and tents. we witness people openly doing drugs are the bus stops. this video recorded by passenger shows a man getting beaten on the train the incident happened last november and is just one example the 24% increase in violent crime on la's public transit system. in january alone wondering when batteries were reported, 43 aggravated assaults and 28 robberies if you train passengers shared their disturbing stories with me.

one couple hit head on by a suspected drunken driver says it took two and half hours for police to respond. looks so about after the fourth or fifth call to 911 the lady that answered flat out told me there's just not enough police to respond to this incident. >> let's bring in jennifer from cleats the combined a law enforcement associations of texas. jennifer thank you so much for being here. i also want to mention that couple had two young kids in the car. their daughter end up needing medical attention a little bit later on. this just really speaks to the larger problem out there with the lack of resources in law enforcement, jennifer. >> yes it does. things have come to a head in austin, texas. we have been doing with woke elected officials for several years now. we have a city council defined the police department $150 million that simply cannot
1:14 pm
be restored and have things go back to normal. they shut down our police academy and hired a critical race theory team to committed update curriculum along with others. again, all this causing mass resignations across the department for several years. year-over-year. as i stated this is all coming to a head. we also have district attorney a source funded district attorney who refuses to prosecute crime but is laser focused on prosecuting police officers within travis county in the austin police department. again, hurting our retention efforts and our recruiting efforts. this is the service you are seeing now the gentleman that just spoke. >> those who remain on the fourth said they are doing the best they can for the austin police department did give a statement to fox and friends saying quote due to the incidents and calls that our officers attend we may not have enough officers to be at every
1:15 pm
call once i came in. our officers and they were when operas work every day to handle the high-volume of calls who may receive the city and apd's work at innovative ways to address this issue including an intensified and targeted recruitment campaign to fill vacancies. but, to the point you're just making the environment right now is really not helpful in terms of recruiting. x know it is not at all. we are unable to recruit officers. more importantly i would say we are unable to retain the experienced officers that we have in the department. they are resigning in mass numbers. we have homicide detectives who are being placed back on patrol. we simply do not have the resources to investigate crime. as you can see we do not have the resources to respond to crime at this point. >> you mentioned the retirements here let's put some of those numbers. you can see what has happened
1:16 pm
over the last few years. it's pretty striking to see the numbers here. for 2021 at 116 retirements followed by 97 the following year. this year, 77 retirements are plans. this is becoming an impossible situation. not just in austin, texas though. this is happening all over the country cities are facing this time and again i do not have enough officers on the beat. they do not have enough people come into the recruitment situation to become officers in progress exactly as i stated these woke policies and initiatives to prosecute police officers is not helping the situation. we also have an austin city council just voted down a police contract. a bit under police contract for decades. that is going to only exacerbate the problem with mass resignations that will continue throughout this year. the austin police department officially goes out of contract here in a few days on march 31.
1:17 pm
we will see what that means in terms of additional resignations that will continue throughout 2023 and beyond for a sourcing the result, jennifer, thank you so much for your time today. >> thank you, appreciate it. support new reaction from washington after u.s. forces were targeted by iranian backed militants in sierra. so how should president biden counter the growing threats from tehran? we will ask doctor rebecca grant on that as "fox news live" continues on this sunday. energy in just two weeks. uhhhh... here, i'll take that.
