stories out to you. great reporting my friend. but he is right. the longer these benefits continue, whatever you make of them they're preventing these restaurants from having enough people to deal with the improvement that is real and going on. here comes "the five". >> jesse: i'm jesse waters and greg gut f*eld and others. 5:00 in new york city and this is "the five". the day after the derek chauvin verdict t. former minneapolis officer found guilty for the death of george floyd. now the conversation has turned to police reform. liberals aren't satisfied with the verdict yesterday and are still making calls to abolish the police. earlier today attorney general merrick garland announced a d.o.j. investigation into the
2:01 pm
minneapolis police department practices. democratic congresswoman debbie dingell offering a voice of reason as to how the country could move forward. take a listen. >> okay, we've got a problem in this country but we've got to stop taking paint brushes and painting everybody and letting ourselves be falsely pitted. we need racial justice and we need public safety. >> jesse: i think you would agree. that sounds fair to me. the point she was trying to make not all officers are racist. not all blacks are criminals. that is something, you know, that has divided this country over the last couple years. how do you see her comments? >> juan: i this i the congresswoman is exactly right, jesse. i think that there is a real common ground between good policing and racial justice.
2:02 pm
and i think that debbie dingell has hit just the right note for everyone. i think for many people the thought is oh, the chauvin verdict is the end of the story. i think it is an opportunity to start a conversation about good policing. i think that's why you see the justice department saying they'll look at the pattern and practice of how the minneapolis police department was being operated. and again the hope is that we're not talking about defunding. we are talking about real practical steps that everybody can get behind and say this will make us safer. that's the goal of policing is pof safer communities. i think the chauvin case did expose what people -- black people specifically had been saying for a long time. that there are instances of police abuse and we saw it on the videotape. that helped to change the conversation so that everyone can see and say i believe my eyes. i just asked people look at the
2:03 pm
tape, look at it for yourself and say what i saw was an abuse of power. i saw a man get killed. so now it's a matter of all of us opening our eyes to what people have been saying for years. the statistics clearly show in terms of i think the thousand people killed by police every year, over the last 15 years, only about 100 police officers have been charged with a crime in any of those instances. and only 35 have ever been convicted. most of them not convicted of murder, but of negligence, manslaughter, lesser charges. so now we have a chance to say well, you know what? we need to talk about this because it is not good to have a whole segment of the population feeling that the police are there not to protect them but in fact to harass or abuse them. so i think at this point it is a good point to start the
2:04 pm
conversation. let's do it honestly and let's not fall into stereotypes and tropes. >> jesse: i agree. why don't we start that conversation, dana, with some practical examples. there was a situation in ohio last night where 911 call went out. a black teenage girl was about to stab another teenager to death. had the knife like this, wielding the knife, about to stab her to death. wouldn't listen to commands from the officer. white officer responds, shoots the teenager and ends up saving the other teenager's life and that media -- that is framed by the media totally recklessly as again white officer shoots black teenager. that's the headline. i just think you can't have an honest conversation as we all want to if you are just going to irresponsibly depict every officer as a killer. when if you read the paragraph below the headline it is a lie.
2:05 pm
>> dana: right. there has been a lot of coverage on this and more to come because i don't know if you saw, jesse, but lebron james decided to posted a picture of the officer and said you are next #accountability. and he has since deleted the tweet but up for quite a long time. what did you mean by that? i thought that yesterday we were talking about the importance of the integrity of jury trials and believing in that institution. in addition, what you had in the chauvin trial, which was a big difference and some of the things juan is talking about in terms of other encounters, you had video. what did you have in columbus? you had video. so it could be that video will at some point you look at the evidence and it will be presented in front of the jury and video these people to say as the prosecution said you can believe your own eyes. that might then work against a police officer. but then you have a situation
2:06 pm
like in columbus. i think the police department was very smart to release that video right away. because it also could be a video could show us the entire situation. the split second decision, the situation where another young girl's life was in danger at the hands of another. so all of that could happen. the point of debbie dingell, i think she could be a real leader on this and she is trying. if you remember, though, a year ago when they were running for president and vice president, biden and harris were basically saying that doing nothing in terms of legislation was better than doing something. that is when they used the filibuster to go after tim scott's bill. now perhaps going forward in the spirit of -- that we can all feel today maybe there is a way to revisit that. as i understand it tim scott says they're close on a compromise. they are seeking a path forward. i think we should always hopefully have an open mind and say what they have to say and
2:07 pm
get something done this time. >> jesse: i don't know if we will get something done, dagen. the president told the american people last night the black americans are scared to death when they go to the grocery store. i'm not black and maybe i have no idea. could be true. doesn't sound true. i just feel like when you say something like that, i just don't see it. >> the rhetoric coming out of the white house from biden and co is very troubling and jen psaki said about the shooting in columbus. she said she suggested on this explicitly sad it was an illegitimate racist shooting. here is what she said. she was a child. we're thinking of her friends and family and the communities that are hurting and grieving her loss. we know that police violence
2:08 pm
disimportant are portion naturally impacts black and latino communities and black women and girls and black men and boys experience higher rates of police violence. it wasn't about a young woman's life being saved. it wasn't about a young woman with a knife in her hand. horrific as it is, the language that is being used by this white house is driving racial divisions even further. and the fact that debbie dingell would have to come out and say what she did shows how far gone this nation is. it is upside down, backwards and broken where the fact that you have to come out and say that we need the police. the police protect us. we need law enforcement. you know, some days ago or years ago it would have been a reasonable and rational thing to say but now it is instead taken as something incendiary and inflammatory.
2:09 pm
>> jesse: you reflect on some of the things you've seen and heard. >> greg: just in the last couple of minutes the debate isn't dividing the country. the media narrative is dividing the country. no one is divided over the chauvin verdict. do you know anybody that said that was wrong, i'm really angry? the media cannot take yes for an answer. because once they do, then they no longer have this issue to beat america's head with. so you keep hearing about systemic racism from joe biden who has been an integral part of this system for 50 years. if he believes in systemic racism as he said last night as a stain on america he was there leaving the stain for five decades. before you throw the whole country under the bus as a bunch of redneck racists you have to throw yourself under the bus too. you were right there. you were one of the most powerful people in the country. you could have done something
2:10 pm
and you did do some things that were considered racist. you went to a funeral of a kkk dragon. don't talk to us about systemic racism. this is the real problem here. i can't believe this but we're actually creating our own anti-american propaganda. this systemic racist narrative is so destructive that it is actually identical to what china says about us. as recently as in anchorage, alaska. what we're doing, we're doing our enemies work. we are on a path to destruction that is of our own doing. we are doing it to ourselves and it is the opposite of aounfication. it is destruction. the bottom line here is the way the media and democrats have reacted is proof that even if the justice system worked that can't be proof at all because if you say that it undermines the narrative that we are an irreversibly racist company. it will keep happening again
2:11 pm
and again and again as you saw with the white house did with the ohio case last night. where that officer might have saved a black girl's life who was being stabbed. what's interestingly enough was not in a lot of the headlines when you read about it. we're in dangerous times here. let's not pretend for a minute that everybody suddenly is ready to have a conversation because the -- people were trying to have this conversation for years. the statistics are obviously being ignored by one side. tens of millions of police stops resulting in maybe four dozen tragic disgusting unarmed men and women being shot. the majority of them non-black. we don't talk about that. that doesn't fit the narrative, right? >> jesse: we're having a good conversation on "the five". i can tell you that. it's true. >> greg: i'm on my meds that's
