an issue about cops, there are over 100 million incidents across the country with cops and people interactions, they have a couple incidents, my problem here is we have -- charles: have to leave it, there bo. my heart goes out to them. lou: here's lou and donald trump next. good evening, everybody, i'm lou dobbs, the benghazi select committee and star witness hillary clinton clashing on capitol hill, and didn't take long for the expected fireworks to go off in the hearing room. the former secretary of state defended her actions before, during and after the benghazi terror attacks. but one of the most compelling moments came when we all learned for the first time that then secretary clinton sent an e-mail to her daughter. on september 11th, 2012, the day of the benghazi attack and in the e-mail to chelsea, mrs. clinton asserted straightforwardly that an al

qaeda-like terrorist group was responsible for the attack. however that's not what she told american people. it's not what the obama administration told the american people, and we'll have the full report for you tonight. also joining us, donald trump, closing in on 100 days at the top of the polls in the republican race for the presidential nomination. over all of that time, the republican establishment and most of the media elites and his opponents of course have been trying to diminish trump, dismissing him. scoffing at him, trying to mock him now. that he's led in the polls for three months there are reports the gop establishment means to destroy his campaign to destroy his candidacy with a barrage of attack ads and negative campaigns. donald trump, our special guest here tonight, coming up in just a few moments. first breaking news, congressman paul ryan has officially jumped into the race for speaker, ryan saying in a statement that he wants to show

the country what a commonsense, conservative agenda looks like. tonight we'll talk with one of the congressmen who is still far from sold on the idea of a house speaker who gets a conservative grade of f. congressman tim holscamp, among our guests. the congressional hearing that took up the entire day on capitol hill. mike emanuel with our report. >> reporter: lou, while hillary clinton has spoken publicly about benghazi before. this time her e-mail provided a useful tool for help with asking her questions. >> i was the one who asked chris to go to libya as our envoy. >> reporter: three years after the benghazi attack former secretary of state and current presidential candidate hillary clinton testified before the select committee looking into the incident which ended with the death of ambassador chris stevens and three other americans. republican chairman trey gowdy says the focus was on the americans killed and not on campaign politics.

>> there are people frankly in both parties who have suggested this investigation is about you. let me assure you it is not. this investigation is about four people who were killed representing our country on foreign soil. >> reporter: clinton's democratic allies including ranking member elijah cummings suggested this is a waste of time and money. >> the select committee has spent 17 months and $4.7 million of taxpayer money. >> reporter: ohio republican jim jordan used clinton's own e-mail to foreign dignitaries to show she didn't believe the obama administration narrative, an internet video was to blame for benghazi. >> you can tell the truth like you did with your family, like you did with the libyan president, like you did with the egyptian prime minister, tell them it's a terrorist attack. you picked a video narrative. >> reporter: clinton said nobody feels worse about benghazi than she does. >> i've lost more sleep than

all of you put together. i have been racking my brain about what more could have been done? >> reporter: as for stevens, clinton said he was aware libya was a dangerous assignment. >> chris stevens understood that diplomats must operate in many places where our soldiers do not. in fact, he volunteered for just those assignments. >> reporter: republicans note stevens made hundreds of requests for more security in 2012, but clinton said she didn't micromanage people handling those matters. >> those requests and issues related to security were rightly handled by the security professionals in the department. i did not see them. i did not approve them. i did not deny them. >> reporter: indiana republican susan brooks suggested clinton and team took eye off libya in the months before the attack. >> in this pile if 2011, i see daily updates. sometime hourly updates.

from your staff about benghazi and chris stevens. when you look at this pile in 2012, i only see a handful of e-mails to you from your senior staff about benghazi. >> reporter: clinton acknowledged stevens didn't have her personal e-mail address but lawmakers have hundreds of her friend sidney blumenthal's electronic messages, that led to sparks flying between the chairman and the panel's top democrat. >> why is it you only want mr. blumenthal's transcript released. >> i'd like to have all of them released. >> the survivors? you want that released? >> reporter: e-mails and memos got her attention and security requests from her ambassador in libya, she says never made it to her desk, lou? lou: mike, thank you very much, mike emanuel. mrs. clinton is, despite it all, expected to be her party's presidential nominee, and as it stands she will be. her republican opponent in all likelihood will be the man who has dominated the gop polls and

it looks as though the nomination is his to lose. tonight we're joined by none other than donald trump, and donald, good to talk with you. you've got to be feeling pretty good where the polls have you, and your prospects right now? >> well, i do, lou, we'll see what happens. certainly we have a long road to go. it's just -- in a way it's just beginning, we've had over 100 days as number one in all of the national polls and had good ones come out over the last couple of days. we'll see. it's still a long road. lou: you continue to surprise nearly all of the savants, the ones honest enough to say you've surprised them. one of the surprises is you have cut remarkably your negatives in poll after poll, a fete that not even some of your most ardent supporters thought you could accomplish, is it because you've tempered your language somewhat? >> that could be. i know one of the pollsters

said it was a record-setting cut. that's a good one. you don't hear that too often. but it was record setting. i think i'm a nice person, like to be a nice person, perhaps i've tempered a little bit. went to an ivy league person, i'm supposed to be a smart person, should i be able to temper it, if i have to. we're in this position. you know my whole concept and theme is make america great again, and people, it's been resonating with everybody. amazingly we have tremendous turnouts, in iowa last night, and new hampshire two days ago, we were in south carolina, all over, and we're getting tremendous record turnouts and people want to see good things happen for our country, lou. lou: as you acknowledge, modestly, it is early days and a long ways to go toward the nomination, but byron york on the broadcast, and wrote an article on a report focusing on the gop establishment and i

don't think it's loathing is too strong a word is loathing of your candidacy and they're intent to throw everything, including the sink, kitchen or otherwise, at you, with negative ads, negative campaigns, attack ads, what's your reaction? >> well, i guess that's the world of politics, that's probably what they do. i've been involved in politics for a long time. that generally is what they do. i will hit back very, very hard. a lot of this money that comes in has come in with all different groups, including lobbyists and special interests. it is not the candidates' money, the lobbyists won't be able to deal with me like a politician. politicians are basically puppets for the lobbyists, that's one of the reasons the county is in such trouble. we'll see what happens. we will hit hard, that i can tell you, lou. lou: talk about a few developments among them. paul ryan saying he's ready to be speaker, now that the conservative wing of the republican party is apparently acquiesced to his demands.

your thoughts about him and his prospects and whether if you were to be elected, whether he would be a man you would enjoy working with, or would it be a problem? >> no, i think he can be worked with absolutely. sounds like it's now something he wants and sounds like the conservative groups within -- that everybody said was going to they're coming at the line. time they choose somebody and i think it's going to be him. sounds to me like they're coalesing and going to choose paul ryan, who's a very nice pfrnlt i know him a little bit, not very well. i wish he was stronger on the situation with the whole illegal immigration, but perhaps he'll get stronger as time goes by. lou: it would be interesting to see persuasive politics working in washington, d.c. where the two of you might, for example, discuss illegal immigration, open borders and the trans-pacific partnership, the free trade agreement that you've criticized considerably.

>> i'm very strongly against that, and he's in favor of it. but that's a big difference, too. that doesn't mean we can't change minds. lou: there you go. it would be nice to see somebody change a mind in washington, d.c. >> it doesn't happen anymore. it used to happen. tip o'neill and ronald reagan, used to happen. doesn't happen anymore, but it will happen again. lou: and hillary clinton on capitol hill, your likely opponent should you win the nomination. your thoughts? >> well, i watched a little bit today, i'm very, very busy doing a lot of different things but found it interesting. we'll have to see how it comes out. republicans are saying great victory. the democrats are saying great victory. are you shocked to hear both of these? i'm watching the republicans saying it was great day for republicans and all of the things that came out, and things did come out. at the same time, the democrats thought they did well. we'll have to -- i'll be watching you and watching

others and we'll determine, you'll help me, you'll help everybody make up their minds, lou. lou: we report, you decide, donald, as you well know. carl icahn setting up the super pac. i know it's totally unrelated but he's an enthusiastic supporter of yours, i would think you are somewhat delighted by his enthusiasm backed up with his money. >> well, i like that it does it. he's a brilliant guy, a great guy, he's a good man, he loves the country and definitely got money to do it. he's doing the super pac, i don't know what he's doing with it, but i'm sure what he said, what he says is going to be something people take note of. he's a respected, as you know very well, you've covered him for a long time. he's a respected businessman. i think what he says will have a lot of weight. lou: and one of the world's great straight talkers. >> he is indeed, is he not? lou: absolutely. donald, appreciate your time.

of the freedom caucus but not throwing his support behind congressman ryan just yet. joining us is congressman tim huelskamp, a member of the freedom caucus and serves on the veterans affairs and small business committees. great to have you with us. >> lou, my pleasure. lou: i have to say the freedom caucus supports him but doesn't endorse him. that's kind of fine language, isn't it? >> well, it is, and it was a minority that chose not to devote for chairman ryan supporting him for speaker, we have a threshold of 80%, couldn't reach that. we had 80% threshold we reached on daniel webster, i'm supporting daniel, but paul ryan issued a letter tonight that could have been written by daniel webster talked about being more inclusive. the difference between daniel and paul ryan as speaker he delivered on that already. on the floor of the house, and the speaker daniel webster has

a great ring to it in history, what will have to happen in the future if paul ryan wants to be successful if and when he gets the vote, he has to deliver on what webster promised to be inclusive and bottom up and have the approval rating, two speakers essentially john boehner and his lieutenant, they didn't get the job or lost the job, it's been history in the making but now we'll have the role test the water what happens as we go forward. lou: paul ryan, as i will tell you i've been somewhat critical, perhaps more than somewhat critical, i oppose his views on open borders, amnesty. the trans-pacific partnership, the free trade deal that makes no sense on any level except to the folks on k street and the u.s. chamber of commerce and the business roundtable. so there's some uphill work here, i like him saying he's

going to show everybody what a commonsense conservative agenda looks like. if he means what he says, and man is that a big if, a big word in your town. then it might get interesting as you're suggesting here. >> i think he means what he says but you still have a bunch of other republicans, many of them being engaged in retribution and going after people for years now, and i felt it, as have other conservatives, but when he says he's more inclusive. not about what you say but what you do. paul did make the promise for the next year and a half there wouldn't be any immigration bill, might be border security but the amnesty bill is not coming to the floor. we have the promise. he also requested we would make rules changes that would get rid of this historical motion to vacate the speaker, that is not going to happen. we did not agree to do that. lou: he could still theoretically be fired? he drives a hard bargain. i kind of like that. donald trump said he thinks

he's a nice guy. he must have been teaching him about the art of the deal. that's good trading. >> he made some demands. i'm hoping we have a speaker that goes to the white house and make demands to the president. we've had no demands, speaker john boehner demanded the conservatives to do what the president wanted to do. enough of that. lou: you won't have -- actually said it at a time when he lost an election, you're not going to have richard nixon to kick around anymore, and you in the house won't have john boehner to kick around anymore, congressman, i'm sorry, you get the last word. >> i was going to say, this is historic, two speakers gone in two weeks. establishment was ruling. i think they have a candidate they think they can work with, but the proof's in the putting. see what the changes are. paul ryan is going to introduce those and no more retribution, you need to fill back in of the

after the attack on our consulate in benghazi. you'll hear susan rice on sunday talk shows five days after the attacks. president obama two weeks later as he spoke in front of the u.n. general assembly. first secretary clinton, only three days after the terrorist attack pushing the false internet video narrative in front of the bodies of our four dead americans. at the transfer ceremony at andrews air force base. >> we've seen rage and violence directed at american embassies over an awful internet video that we had nothing to do with. >> it was a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired in cairo, as a consequence of the video. >> that is what we saw play out in the last two weeks is a crude and disgusting video sparked outrage throughout the muslim world. lou: those three people

representing the united states government. congressman jim jordan today hammered the former secretary on that very narrative. >> an e-mail you sent to your family. here's what you said. at 11:00 that night, approximately one hour after you told the american people, you say to your family, two officer were killed today in benghazi by an al qaeda-like group, and most significantly, the next day within 24 hours, you had a conversation with the egyptian prime minister. you told him this. we know the attack in libya had nothing to do with the film. it was a planned attack, not a protest. let me read that one more time. we know, not we think, not it might be. we know the attack in libya had nothing to do with the film, it was a planned attack, it was a protest. you knew the truth but that's not what the american people got. and again, the american people want to know why?

why didn't you tell the american people exactly what you told the egyptian prime minister? >> i think if you look at the statement they made, i clearly said that it was an attack. >> calling it an attack is like saying the sky is blue. of course it was an attack! >> there was a lot of conflicting information. lou: their words. president's. those of susan rice and then those of secretary clinton, all understanding exactly what they were doing. spinning up a false narrative in the waning days of a presidential campaign, one that might have been lost had all the president's men and women not closed ranks around the truth and then advanced an outright lie to the american people. that's what we learned today. our quotation of the evening, this one from george armstrong custer. yes, that custer, who said this of narratives and truth. in his

>> never a recommendation from any intelligence official in our government, from any official in the state department or from any other person with knowledge of our presence in benghazi to shut down benghazi, even after the two attacks that the compound suffered. >> reporter: this classified cable obtained by fox news shows it was an emergency meeting in benghazi three weeks before the 2012 attack, state department and cia personnel discussed suspending operation and moving state department personnel in with the cia where the security was high. it was suggested -- mrs. clinton also gave the impression today that the u.s. operation in benghazi was temporary.

>> there was not an active plan for a consulate in benghazi at any point during this period. that is not what the compound in benghazi was. it was a temporary facility placed there to help us make a determination as to what we would need going forward in benghazi. >> reporter: ambassador stevens deputy greg hicks testified under oath shortly after the attack, but a specific conversation he had with stevens about mrs. clinton's plan. >> did i tell the accountability review board that secretary clinton wanted the post made permanent, ambassador pickering was surprised, he looked both ways to the members of the board saying this is the seventh floor know about this? . >> reporter: the seventh floor is short hand for the executive suite at the state department where mrs. clinton's office was.

service work schedules. how about performance? how about standards? anyway. joining us fox news national security analyst k.t. mcfarland who like the rest of suswatching the benghazi select committee hearings throughout the day. first, what was new that you found compelling about it? >> a couple things. one i think it did put to rest the argument she's old and her health issues. she may be in her late 60s, this has been an endurance race for her. in the fifth, sixth hour she's doing okay. lou: the compelling news is that mrs. clinton has remarkable stamina for a woman of her age. >> secondly, though, she lied. lou: well, i think i would have reversed those headlines, but k.t., this is your moment. what did she lie about? >> she lied, there is evidence that within hours of the benghazi attack she told her

family, she told the egyptian foreign minister it was a terrorist attack, an al qaeda-like attack and went to the american people and lied. lou: i never heard she sent an e-mail perhaps because the e-mails were only recently procured or received, had told chelsea it was a terrorist attack, had you? it was a stunning moment. >> and the e-mails came to the committee a day ago, there was nothing that could have been leaked before this, it was stunning. she was -- she knew what it was. why didn't she tell the american people, and more seriously, the families of the fallen? she said it was a youtube video. lou: there were families of the fallen in attendance. >> absolutely. lou: before those -- the bodies of those four americans, she and the president lied to the american people, and it is that straightforward, and to have the ability to do that is to me

-- i just can't comprehend it. >> i think it's chilling that she was able to look at those families and lie to them, for political reasons. lou: and today in the hearing too, insists in some sort of abstract philosophical level that the video played perhaps a tangential part, it's very sad indeed. in fact, benghazi still is not resolved, though. benghazi we still don't understand, i want to compliment chairman trey gowdy and certainly congressman pompeo, the list goes on, but jim jordan nailed it when he went through the list of to whom she had expressed definitive knowledge that it was a terrorist attack and in the waning hours of that attack and after the attack itself. that's remarkable. >> really i found that quite chilling she could know what it was and turn around and look at

lou: president obama today as promised veto annual defense spending bill, using a white house photo op to do it he objected to an additional 38 billion in spending for overseas military contingencies. >> the bill makes it more

difficult for him to close gitmo. joining us now, former army vice chief of staff, general jack keane. great to see you. your thoughts? >> does not make sense over 38 billion given what is happening, that soldier pay -- initiative by senator mccain. and senate armed service committee. ha we need beyond the authorization bill is a budget approving a defense budget, they use continuing resolutions for 7 years you can't plan based to that. that is lost on a lot of people, this gets in budgetary process and details of that are confusing, is sad commentary on what is going on in washington. lou: i got a kick out of -- not many moments of levity but one.

when the former secretary of state, hillary clinton, started lamenting the fact that house had not produced a budget over the course of time creating great problems for state department, all the while, the president for whom she worked did not produce a budget throughout his entire term in office. it was -- extraordinary the games that are played in that room. but your reaction to the hearing itself? >> i think it you were scored fact that we have major policy failure in libya. not helping them with security, to put down the radical militants, that was a terrible decision that the president, he admitted that second please, a huge operational failure dispute all of thein incidents it took

place in 2012 we failed to protect this consulate. it really is no excuse for that. lou: there seemed to be an effort on the part of clinton to sell the idea it was the temporary, therefore she should not be held responsible or the obama administration for lack of security. and then question is, one that i did not hear anyone ask. what was the cia doing in benghazi with that annex with that level of staffing, a separate question? >> well, the cia has been reported it was trying to get the hands on gadhafi's weapons after he was deposed. antiaircraft weapons and

chemical weapons, i think that was a clandestine mission with a reason for being there. but the security they had at that base is what we should have had at bee leaguered --ly leaguered consulate, we have a area like libya, and an embassy and a consulate like that, that became a high-threat area in 2012. we had a couple other, kabul, and afghanistan and baghdad and iraq, we defended those, that is what should have taken place in libya. lou: general jack keane thank you. >> good talking to you. lou: time for a look on the our on-line poll results. saying house republicans will bow down to paul ryan, he said what not necessary, that is it join us tomorrow, good night
